Holy Eucharist Rite II 

March 10, 2019

10:00am

Welcome to the season of LENT What is the Great Litany? The Great Litany is an intercessory prayer including various petitions that are said or sung by the leader, with fixed responses by the congregation. It was used as early as the fifth century in Rome. It was led by a deacon, with the collects led by a bishop or priest. The Litany was the first English language rite prepared by Archbishop Thomas Cranmer. It was first published in 1544. Cranmer modified an earlier litany form by consolidating certain groups of petitions into single prayers with response. The Litany's use in church processions was ordered by Henry VIII when England was at war with Scotland and France. It was printed as an appendix to the eucharist in the 1549 BCP. The Litany was used in each of the three ordination rites of the 1550 ordinal, with a special petition and concluding collect. The 1552 BCP called for use of the Litany after the fixed collects of Morning Prayer on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The 1928 BCP allowed the Litany to be used after the fixed collects of Morning or Evening Prayer, or before the Eucharist, or separately. The 1928 BCP included a short Litany for Ordinations as an alternative to the Litany. The 1979 BCP titled the Litany "The Great Litany" (p. 148), distinguishing it from other litanies in the Prayer Book. The Great Litany may be said or sung. The officiant and people may kneel or stand, or it may be done in procession. The Great Litany may be done before the Eucharist, or after the collects of Morning or Evening Prayer, or separately. Because of its penitential tone, it is especially appropriate during Lent. We begin this morning with the Great Litany connecting us to our tradition and our ancestors and also to invite us into this holy season of Lent. We will stand as Lisa chants the prayers and we respond with the refrains listed below.

liturgy of the word

Opening Statement Celebrant: People:

Blessed is the Lord who forgives all our sins. God’s mercy endures forever.

Collect of the Day Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Let us pray. God our help, you have given your angels charge over us to guard us in all our ways: make known your presence with us throughout these forty days that we may find even in the wilderness your springs of living water, you that makes us whole. In Jesus’ name. Amen. (Please be seated for the Lessons.)

The First Lesson Reader:

Deuteronomy 26:1-11

A reading from Deuteronomy.

When you have come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and settle in it, you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his name. You shall go to the priest who is in office at that time, and say to him, "Today I declare to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us." When the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the Lord your God, you shall make this response before the Lord your God: "A wandering Aramean was my ancestor; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a great nation, mighty and populous. When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by imposing hard labor on us, we cried to the Lord, the God of our ancestors; the Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. The Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with a terrifying display of power, and with signs and wonders; and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O Lord, have given me." You shall set it down before the Lord your God and bow down before the Lord your God. Then you, together with the Levites and the aliens who reside among you, shall celebrate with all the bounty that the Lord your God has given to you and to your house.

Psalm

Psalm 91:2, 9-16

(A single voice will sing the first half of each verse, and the congregation is invited to join in singing the second half in bold.) 1

He who dwells in the shelter of the / Most High, * abides under the shadow of the / Almighty.

2 He

shall say to the LORD, "You are my refuge and my / stronghold, * my God in whom I / put my trust."

9

Because you have made the LORD your / refuge, * and the Most High your / habitation,

10

There shall no evil happen / to you, * neither shall any plague come near / your dwelling.

11

For he shall give his angels charge / over you, * to keep you in all / your ways.

12

They shall bear you in / their hands, * lest you dash your foot / against a stone.

13

You shall tread upon the lion and / adder; * you shall trample the young lion and the serpent / under your feet.

14

Because he is bound to me in love, therefore will I de- / liver him; * I will protect him, because he knows / my Name.

15

He shall call upon me, and I will / answer him; * I am with him in trouble; I will rescue him and bring him / to honor.

16

With long life will I satis- / fy him, * and show him my / salvation.

The second Lesson Reader:

Romans 10:8b-13

A reading from Romans.

"The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. The scripture says, "No one who believes in him will be put to shame." For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved."

The Gospel Celebrant: People:

Luke 4:1-13 The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

After his baptism, Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread." Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone.'" Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And the devil said to him, "To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours." Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.'" Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, 'He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,' and, 'On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.'" Jesus answered him, "It is said, 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'" When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time.

The Apostles’ Creed

The Book of Common Prayer pg. 53

(Please stand as you are able.) (What is the Apostle’s Creed and why are we reciting it during Lent? The Apostle’s Creed is an ancient formula of Christian belief in three sections concerning God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit- the three dimensions of the Divine that together shape and the fullness of eternal Love. Some attribute its authorship to the 12 apostles, while others suggest it dates from the late 4th century. Regardless of its origins, it considered an authentic expression of the apostolic faith connecting us deeply to our spiritual ancestors. In the ancient church the season of Lent was a time of preparation for baptism and this creed was memorized as part of that process. As a way to remember our own baptismal promises during this Lenten journey we will recite this affirmation of our faith during these 5 weeks.)

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Celebrant: Gracious God, in the fullness of time you sent Jesus the Christ to share our fragile humanity. Through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection you open the path from brokenness to health, from feat to trust, from pride and conceit to reverence for you. Rejected by a world that could not bear the Gospel of life, Jesus knew death was near. His head anointed for burial by an unknown woman, Jesus gathered together those who loved him. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it and gave it to his friends, saying, ‘Take and eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.’ After supper, Jesus took the cup of wine, gave you thanks, and said ‘Drink this all of you, this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.’ And now we gather at this table in response to his commandment, to share the bread and cup of Christ’s undying love, and the proclaim our faith.

People:

Christ has died. Christ has risen. Christ will come again.

Celebrant:

Breathe your Holy Spirit, the wisdom of the universe, upon these gifts that we bring to you: this bread, this cup, ourselves, our souls and bodies, that we may be signs of your love for all the world and ministers of your transforming purpose.

Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory is yours, Creator of all, and we bless your holy name for ever. AMEN. 12

Celebrant:

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Fraction & Invitation Celebrant: People: Celebrant:

Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore, let us keep the feast. The Gifts of God for the People of God. Holy food for holy people.

For some, church is as comfortable and familiar as a good pair of jeans, or like coming back to your childhood home (if it is one filled with good memories). For others, church might be like visiting a foreign country where you experience unfamiliar language or customs. And then, sadly, for some church has become equated with feelings of hurt, rejection, or shame. We get all of that and believe that church can be different.

We hold in real tension the beauty of our tradition with Jesus’ mandate to welcome all, no exceptions. And we get that if people are brave enough to walk through the doors of a big, Gothic-looking church in downtown Toledo, we’d better be serious about being progressive, inclusive and creative. We love our Episcopal tradition, but we love people from all walks of life even more. It is our hope and prayer that together we will navigate our way through each gathering, worship service, outreach activity, class, meal and social time with humility, grace and laughter. So thank you for being here today; for trusting the yearning that brought you through those ancient doors. May we all find our way into the heart of God’s love as we make room for each and all of us at the Table of love we set together week after week. And may you never forget you are loved,

In shop trainings and free tool kits will be provided by the Toledo Public Library.

One of Trinity's newest ministries, Open Table Toledo, officially gets underway this spring. The mission of OT is unlike anything else in our community. We exist to offer long-term, consistent, supportive relationships to youth who age out of Lucas County's foster care system. These 18+-year-old young adults are among the most invisible and at-risk people in our community. Removed from their families for their own safety and placed into foster care, they reach "official" adulthood without being safely reunited with family or being adopted. They're alone, adrift in a very big world. And that's where OT comes in. We organize small groups of 6-8 volunteers. They commit to meeting weekly with one young foster alum, giving encouragement and support to that person as they define and work toward goals that yield a flourishing, sustainable life.

Prayer Requests Special prayers can be requested through our new Prayer Request Binder located at the prayer station, to the right of the columbarium.

We aim to change lives one week at a time. (PS: Your life will transform, too.)

You can make prayer requests for yourself or others, and your request can be as simple as an addition to the Trinity Pages prayer list or a request to be contacted by Priest Lisa. Please email the office at admin@trinitytoledo.org.
