W.A. Mozart Hymnal #433

Welcome & Collect of the day Celebrant: People: Celebrant:

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Subversive God, deconstructing temples of power in which we would keep you trapped and tamed: lead us through violent times, unafraid to speak for peace, untempted by those who promise easy answers; may we follow him alone who renews the world in love; through Jesus Christ who sits at God’s right hand. Amen

Please be seated for the Lessons

The First Lesson Reader:

Daniel 12:1-3

A reading from the first book of Daniel

The Lord spoke to Daniel in a vision and said, “At that time Michael, the great prince, the protector of your people, shall arise. There shall be a time of anguish, such as has never occurred since nations first came into existence. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.” Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People. People: Thanks be to God. 3

The psalm

Psalm 16

The cantor will sing the refrain before the congregation. Refrain

1 Protect me, O God, for I take refuge in you; * I have said to the LORD, "You are my Lord, my good above all other." 2 All my delight is upon the godly that are in the land, * upon those who are noble among the people. 3 But those who run after other gods * shall have their troubles multiplied. 4 Their libations of blood I will not offer, * nor take the names of their gods upon my lips. Refrain 5 O LORD, you are my portion and my cup; * it is you who uphold my lot. 6 My boundaries enclose a pleasant land; * indeed, I have a goodly heritage. 7 I will bless the LORD who gives me counsel; * my heart teaches me, night after night. 8 I have set the LORD always before me; * because he is at my right hand I shall not fall. Refrain 4

Gather #75

9 My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spirit rejoices; * my body also shall rest in hope. 10 For you will not abandon me to the grave, * nor let your holy one see the Pit. 11 You will show me the path of life; * in your presence there is fullness of joy, and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore. Refrain

The second Lesson Reader:

Hebrews 10:11-14, 19-25

A reading from Hebrews

Every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, “he sat down at the right hand of God,” and since then has been waiting “until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet.” For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Reader: People:

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Gospel Celebrant: People:

Mark 13:1-8 The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

As Jesus came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!” Then Jesus asked him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.” When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, “Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?” Then Jesus began to say to them, “Beware that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birthpangs.” Celebrant: People:

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

New Zealand Prayer Book

(Please stand as you are able.)

We believe in the God of Life, who creates and loves people, who acts in history and who promises never to leave us alone. We believe in Jesus of Nazareth, who is our brother, who wants not to be idolized but to be followed. We believe that we dwell in the presence of the Holy Spirit; without Her we are nothing; filled with Her we are able to become creative, lively and free. We believe in the Church of Jesus Christ, a community where we find companions and courage for the struggles of life, where we grow in our understanding of the faith, through worship, prayer, nurture and service. We believe that God has a use for us in this time and place, that though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we are called to be instruments of God’s peace. We believe in living, hoping, laughing, and enjoying the good of the earth. We believe that people can change, and that God keeps pulling us to life and to a new world of joy and peace. Amen.

The Prayers of the People Refrain

Ken Medema (1970)

Intercessor:

Open our minds, O Creator, that we might dream a Church reconciled, knowing your love so abundantly it bursts with a passion for ministry, a desire to give completely, and a sense of generosity that seeks only to give back.

Intercessor:

Open our hearts, O Giver of Gifts, to be transformed by the mighty outpouring of your compassion, so that we will seek to serve others with humility, integrity and urgency as your servants.

Refrain Intercessor:

Open our eyes, O Sanctifier of Life, to the hurts and needs of others. Teach us to see where our own abilities and resources - and the world’s deep hunger – meet.

Intercessor:

Open our hands, O Spirit, to be your instruments of witness. Help us to work without caution, serve without recognition, to do justice, to love kindness, and to serve humbly with you, our God.

Refrain Intercessor:

Open our memories, O Redeemer of All, as we tenderly remember those who have died, especially those we now name….. Help us honor the wisdom of those who devoted their lives to service, and who generously gave of their time and resources.

Celebrant:

Nurturing God, your love is free, your compassion unconditional, and your mercy infinite. Grant that we may discover the joy of living lives from a place of radical generosity, following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ our friend. In the name of Christ. Amen. 9

The Confession of Sin & Absolution Celebrant:

Let us confess our sins to God. (silence may be kept)

Celebrant and People: Creator God, full of grace and truth, you create us from nothing and give us life abundant. You give us new life in the water of baptism. You never turn your face from us, nor cast us aside. We confess we have turned against you and against our neighbor, in thought, word and deed. We have wounded your love and marred your image in us. Restore us for the sake of your Son, and bring us to heavenly joy, in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Celebrant:

All:

May the God of love bring you back to all that is good in you. May you be forgiven of all wrongdoing, and welcome God’s grace anew in your life this day. May God’s assurance strengthen your resolve to begin again in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Peace Celebrant: People:

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

Enriching Our Worship Eucharistic Prayer #3

(Please stand as you are able.) Celebrant: People: Celebrant: People: Celebrant: People:

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Celebrant continues: All thanks and praise are yours at all times and in all places, our true and loving God; through Jesus Christ, your eternal Word, the Wisdom from on high by whom you created all things. You laid the foundations of the world and enclosed the sea when it burst out from the womb; you brought forth all creatures of the earth and gave breath to humankind. Wondrous are you, Holy One of Blessing, all you create is a sign of hope for our journey; and so as the morning stars sing your praises we join the heavenly beings and all creation as we shout with joy:

11

Sanctus

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord

LEVAS 252

The celebrant continues: Glory and honor are yours, Creator of all, your Word has never been silent; you called a people to yourself, as a light to the nations, you delivered them from bondage and led them to a land of promise. Of your grace, you gave Jesus to be human, to share our life, to proclaim the coming of your holy reign and give himself for us, a fragrant offering. Through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, you have freed us from sin, brought us into your life, reconciled us to you, and restored us to the glory you intend for us. We thank you that on the night before he died for us Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, gave it to his friends and said: “Take, eat, this is my Body, broken for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing, gave it to his friends and said: “Drink this, all of you: this cup is the new Covenant in my Blood, poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

12

And so, remembering all that was done for us: the cross, the tomb, the resurrection and ascension, longing for Christ’s coming in glory, and presenting to you these gifts your earth has formed and human hands have made, we acclaim you, O Christ: All:

Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Christ Jesus, come in glory!

Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts of bread and wine that they may be to us the Body and Blood of your Christ. Grant that we, burning with your Spirit’s power, may be a people of hope, justice and love. Giver of Life, draw us together in the Body of Christ, and in the fullness of time gather us with all your people into the joy of our true eternal home. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, we worship you our God and Creator in voices of unending praise. Blessed are you now and forever. AMEN.

The Lord’s Prayer Celebrant:

14

As our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say:

The Fraction: Breaking of the Bread & Invitation Celebrant: All:

We break this bread to share in the Body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread.

Celebrant:

The gifts of God for the people of God. Holy food, for holy people.

(Please be seated until you are invited to come forward to receive communion.) We welcome ALL to come forward to receive the bread and wine we offer as a sign of God’s love in and for our lives. (We have bread, gluten-free wafers, wine, and grape juice.) To receive the bread—put your hands together (palms up) in front of you. Either eat the bread and drink from the chalice or dip the bread in the chalice. If you are unable to come forward and wish to have Communion brought to you, please inform a greeter. Need prayer for yourself or someone else? During communion, come to the prayer station near the back of our worship space. Prayers may be requested for healing, medical procedures, safe travels, and more. Blessings for birthdays, anniversaries, and other events may also be requested. This can also be a time of quiet prayer for you to see out God's love in silence. There is also a basket where you can write down your prayer requests; the team will keep you in their prayers. All are welcome to take advantage of this opportunity, but no one is required; know that you are welcome and wanted just as you are.

Trinity Episcopal Church Progressive  Inclusive  Creative  Downtown 316 Adams Street, Toledo, OH trinitytoledo.org 419-243-1231

Trinity Pages #LOVE IS THE WAY! Good morning and “welcome home” to Trinity! Whether you are new to our community or have found yourself coming back again and again, we want you to know you are both welcome and wanted here among us. For some, church is as comfortable and familiar as a good pair of jeans, or like coming back to your childhood home (if it is one filled with good memories). For others, church might be like visiting a foreign country where you experience unfamiliar language or customs. And then, sadly, for some church has become equated with feelings of hurt, rejection, or shame. We get all of that, and believe that church can be different. We hold in real tension the beauty of our tradition with Jesus’ mandate to welcome all, no exceptions. And we get that if people are brave enough to walk through the doors of a big, Gothic-looking church in downtown Toledo, we’d better be serious about being progressive, inclusive and creative. We love our Episcopal tradition, but we love people from all walks of life even more. It is our hope and prayer that together we will navigate our way through each gathering, worship service, outreach activity, class, meal and social time with humility, grace and laughter. So thank you for being here today; for trusting the yearning that brought you through those ancient doors. May we all find our way into the heart of God’s love as we make room for each and all of us at the Table of love we set together week after week. May you never forget you are loved,

Advent Offerings at Trinity Lovingkindness Meditations: December 2, 9, 16 & 23 at 9:15am, Chapel As we focus this Advent on seeing each person as made in God's image and likeness, we will be experiencing lovingkindness meditation. This meditative prayer practice helps us extend compassion and peace to ourselves, to others, and to the world. Join us in the chapel at 9:15 am. Individual prayer experiences in My Brother's Place. Use other attached image and this text “Resources for praying in color, praying with icons, and mandalas will be available in the walled off section of My Brother’s Place for your use during breakfast and throughout Advent. Make sure to pick up a praying in color Advent calendar!” Advent Retreat: Annunciation: Exploring Your Yes Saturday, December 8, 9:00am-12:00pm, 577 Foundation in Perrysburg (577 East Front Street) One of the scripture passages that we often hear this time of year is Luke 1:26-38, when God sends Gabriel to tell Mary about God’s plan for her. The most important part of this story is Mary’s consent to take part. Without her yes, the world would be a very different place. While angels are rarely involved these days, God has not stopped inviting people to participate in God’s action in the world. This quiet morning has been structured to help you explore your yes to partner with God in God’s mission. Join us the morning of Saturday, December 8, for a combination of guided activities and independent quiet time (prayer, journaling, coloring, walking outside, etc.). Registration forms available in the sanctuary and online signups available on our website(trinitytoledo.org) under the Gatherings->Events tab. Advent Small Group For the season of Advent, we are going to offer an opportunity to commit to a 4-session small group. A group of ten and a facilitator will use the material offered by the Episcopal Church, Journeying the Way of Love to carve out an intentional time and way to wait together for the coming of Christ. The group(s) will read through the first two chapters of Luke’s gospel providing a pattern for understanding how we can live the Way of Love as individuals, as families and friends, as a community, and out in the world. The sessions will meet on the following dates and we are asking that those who are interested make a commitment to come to all 4 sessions. All sessions will take place at Trinity. Materials and refreshments will be provided Session dates and times: Wednesdays, December 5, 12, 19 6:00-7:30 & Sunday, December 23, 5:00-6:30 Signup is available online under the “Formation” tab or contact the office. 11:30am Sunday Formation Offerings: Ministry in Toledo December 2: Open Table Toledo - Roberta Durham will talk about an innovative new program to support young people who are aging out of the foster care program. Annual Giving Campaign Final Update Beloved Friends,

November 2018

We have now reached the formal end of our 2018 Annual Giving Campaign; thank you to everyone who pledged so generously responding to the invitation of “Radical Generosity.” We are very grateful for the response and look forward to still receiving some additional pledges in the coming weeks. We currently have 100 households actively engaged in the ministry. Over the course of the 3-week campaign we extended opportunities to respond at church, on line and through mailing in a pledge card. And while we have not yet met some of the goals we set for this year, we have seen a significant response and want to share those results as well as encourage those who have not yet turned in a pledge to do so as soon as possible. Number of pledges Total dollars pledged

2016 53 $136,922

2017 50 $132,908

2018 61 $152,339

Goals 2019 68 $167,572

Actual to date 46 $140,894

Additional Results Average Pledge New Pledges Increase Same Decrease

2016 $2,583 3 11 32 20

2017 $2,658 5 15 23 7

2018 $2,497 12 23 22 4

2019 $3,062 10 22 10 4

This year we have set 3 specific “10% goals” for our community relating to overall pledges, pledged amount and individual pledge increases. And while we have not yet reached those goals, it is hopeful to see that the overall average pledge increased not by 10% but by closer to 20%. What that says to us is those who are here are stepping up and into the sacrificial nature of who and how we are called to be in community. Keep those pledges coming—together we can still meet these goals!
