Morning Prayer

An Introduction to today’s service Today we will be using the Morning Prayer liturgy, as it can be lead with or without an ordained clergy, since it does not call for Communion. The focus of Morning Prayer is on the Lessons, the Sermon, and the Collects (prayers), which were beautifully written by theologians and poets for the Glory of God throughout the years.

REFRAIN

(Psalm Tone)

I will exalt you, O LORD, because you have lifted me up * and have not let my enemies triumph over me . 2 O LORD my God, I cried out to you, * and you restored me to health . 3 You brought me up, O LORD, from the dead; * you restored my life as I was going down to the grave . 4 Sing to the LORD, you servants of his; * give thanks for the remembrance of his holiness . 1

REFRAIN 5 For his wrath endures but the twinkling of an eye, * his favor for a lifetime . 6 Weeping may spend the night, * but joy comes in the morning . 7 While I felt secure, I said, "I shall never be disturbed. * You, LORD, with your favor, made me as strong as the mountains." 8 Then you hid your face, * and I was filled with fear. REFRAIN 9 I cried to you, O LORD; * I pleaded with the Lord, saying, 10 "What profit is there in my blood, if I go down to the Pit? * will the dust praise you or declare your faithfulness? 11 Hear, O LORD, and have mercy upon me; * O LORD, be my helper." 12 You have turned my wailing into dancing; * you have put off my sack-cloth and clothed me with joy . 13 Therefore my heart sings to you without ceasing; * O LORD my God, I will give you thanks for ever . First Lesson Reader:

Acts 9:1-6 A reading from the book of Acts.

Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. Now as he was going along and approaching Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" He asked, "Who are you, Lord?" The reply came, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But get up and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do." Reader: People:

Here ends the Lesson. Thanks be to God.

Canticle Response

Canticle A: Wisdom 10:15-19,20b-21

(Please stand as you are able.)

Officiant & People: Wisdom freed from a nation of oppressors, a holy people and a blameless race. She entered the soul of a servant of the Lord, withstood dread rulers with wonders and signs. To the saints she gave the reward of their labors, and led them by a marvelous way; she was their shelter by day and a blaze of stars by night. She brought them across the Red Sea, she led them through mighty waters; but their enemies she swallowed in the waves and spewed them out from the depths of the abyss. And then, Lord, the righteous sang hymns to your Name, and praised with one voice your protecting hand; for Wisdom opened the mouths of the mute, and gave speech to the tongues of a new-born people. Praise to the holy and undivided Trinity, one God: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

Second Lesson

John 21:1-19

Reader: A reading from the Gospel of John. Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he showed himself in this way. Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will go with you." They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, "Children, you have no fish, have you?" They answered him, "No." He said to them, "Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was naked, and jumped into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, only about a hundred yards off. When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you have just caught." So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fiftythree of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, "Who are you?" because they knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my lambs." A second time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Tend my sheep." He said to him the third time, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep. Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go." (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, "Follow me." Reader: People:

Here ends the Lesson. Thanks be to God.

Apostle’s Creed

Enriching Our Worship p. 41

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Officiant:

The Book of Common Prayer pg. 364

And now as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say:

The General THANKSGIVING Officiant: People:

The Book of Common Prayer pg. 101

Let us pray together the General Thanksgiving. Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.

Trinity Pages #LOVE IS THE WAY! Good morning and “welcome home” to Trinity! Whether you are new to our community or have found yourself coming back again and again, we want you to know you are both welcome and wanted here among us. For some, church is as comfortable and familiar as a good pair of jeans, or like coming back to your childhood home (if it is one filled with good memories). For others, church might be like visiting a foreign country where you experience unfamiliar language or customs. And then, sadly, for some church has become equated with feelings of hurt, rejection, or shame. We get all of that and believe that church can be different.

TODAY Sunday 5/ 5, 11:15 – Coffee & Conversation- Please join us for refreshments and fellowship following service in the back of the Sanctuary. All are welcome and wanted! Wednesday 5/8 - Healing Eucharist Cancelled Healing Eucharist will resume on Wednesday, May 15th at 12:10pm in the Chapel.

TODAY (5/5)

We hold in real tension the beauty of our tradition with Jesus’ mandate to welcome all, no exceptions. And we get that if people are brave enough to walk through the doors of a big, Gothic-looking church in downtown Toledo, we’d better be serious about being progressive, inclusive and creative.

10:00 Officiant: Becky Roth

We love our Episcopal tradition, but we love people from all walks of life even more. It is our hope and prayer that together we will navigate our way through each gathering, worship service, outreach activity, class, meal and social time with humility, grace and laughter.

Reader Guild: Roberta Durham Sherre Smith Bob Meeker

So thank you for being here today; for trusting the yearning that brought you through those ancient doors. May we all find our way into the heart of God’s love as we make room for each and all of us at the Table of love we set together week after week. And may you never forget you are loved,

Lisa
