But Not Held

The Work of The People (TWOTP) by Walter Brueggemann

Read by Lisa Tucker-Gray

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.

Christ is Risen! We watch this Jeremiah mired down in mud, in cistern in fear and hostility all around him finally extricated by watching friends who have done your work. We watch this Jesus, set deep in the grip of death…but not held! Held overnight, but not held; held two nights, but not held;
Because the power of death could not hold him.
We know ourselves to be held, overnight, for two nights, too long, held by fear and anxiety,
held by grudge and resentment; held by doubt and fatigue; held by too much stuff, by all manner of the forces of death.
Held, powerless…but turned toward you. You in your risen-ness, make Sundays even for us, even among us, even here, even now, no longer held. Amen.

FIRST READING Reader:

ACTS 7: 55-60 Read by Sherre Smith

A reading from Acts

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Stephen gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. “Look,” he said, “I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against him. Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he died.

Psalm 31: 1-5, 15-16

Psalms for Praying

(Offered by Chelsie Cree & Kim Buehler, Jobst Choral Scholars) The plain text will be offered by the cantor; the congregation is invited to respond by singing the text in bold.

In You, Beloved, I would make / my home; Though I be humiliate- / ed with guilt, 3

Your mercy and forgiveness will deliver me! Hear me and hasten to my a- / ssistance! For You are my strength and have the power to / raise me up! Yes, You are strength and truth / to me; You are my teacher, my guide; the Fire of your abiding Love clean- / ses my heart; Loosen the webs that entangle me, that veil my love / for You. Into your Heart I com- / mend my soul. You have redeemed me, / O Love, O ever / Faithful One. My life is in your hands; deliver me from the fears which separ- / ate me! Let your face shine on me; hold me in your / steadfast love!

SECOND READING Reader:

1 Peter 2: 2-10 Read by Pat Squire

A reading from First Peter

Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in scripture: “See, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” To you then who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the very head of the corner”, and “A stone that makes them stumble, and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

THE GOSPEL Celebrant: People:

John 14: 1-14 The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to John Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.”

Affirmation of FAITH

The United Church of Canada

Led by Mary Beroske

The congregation is invited to join. We are not alone, we live in God's world. We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God. We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God's presence, to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. 5

In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God. Amen.

Prayers of the People

by The Rev. Jan Smith Wood, Episcopal Diocese of Ohio Led by Taylor Tucker-Gray

Intercessor: God of grace and love, we pray your richest blessing upon all mothers in this and

People:

every land. Bless those expectant mothers who eagerly await the birth of their baby; guard those whose pregnancy puts them at risk; console those who are troubled by the prospect of another baby. Nurture and uphold single mothers; inspire mothers everywhere for the vital soul work they undertake with their own children and, thus, for the good of all humankind. We pray to you, Blessing God.

Intercessor: Loving God, we give you thanks that Jesus knew a mother’s love and ask your

People:

blessing upon all children, young and old: those who had the mothering they needed and those who never knew a mother’s love; make us mindful of the ways in which every one of us, male and female, can offer nurturing, guiding love to those in need. We pray to you, Holy God.

Intercessor: God of peace and justice, guide those in authority in the nations of the world,

People:

these United States of America, and this city of Toledo: that they may make wise decisions for the welfare of all, remembering their responsibility and obligation to exercise power as if they, too, were mothers. We pray to you, Mighty God.

Intercessor: God of mercy and consolation, we pray your peace upon those who grieve and

People:

mourn: those who grieve the loss of a child; those who mourn the absence of children in their life; those who have been devastated by broken bonds of affection between parent and child. Console all who are in need, trouble, or despair. We pray to you, Merciful God.

Intercessor: God of abundant love, we give you thanks for all the blessings of life: particularly

People:

for relationships that restore and heal us; for our own mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, godmothers, foster mothers, and mothers of the heart. We give you thanks, Loving God. Amen.

A Maternal Blessing

Sandra Seaborn, Lifting Women’s Voices: Prayers to Change the World

May God who created you, sustain and strengthen your body as new life forms within. May the Son who redeemed you, fill you with love and hope in believing. May the Spirit who empowers you, grant you joy and wisdom for the journey of mothering, and

May the rain fall off your shoulders when you’re caught in a storm. When the frost comes a callin’ may it find you safe and warm. May your place be set, and may your promises be kept. And may you never forget that you are loved.
