First Sunday in Lent Holy Eucharist Trinity@316    February 26, 2022 10:00AM

Welcome to the Season of Lent

THE GREAT LITANY: In today’s service, we will be reciting the Great Litany. The Great Litany is an intercessory prayer including various petitions that are said or sung by the leader, with fixed responses by the congregation. It was used as early as the fifth century in Rome, led by a deacon. The Litany's use in church processions was ordered by Henry VIII when England was at war with Scotland and France. The Great Litany may be said or sung, standing or kneeling by the officiant and people. Because of its penitential tone, it is especially appropriate during Lent. We begin this morning with the Great Litany connecting us to our tradition and our ancestors and also to invite us into this holy season of Lent. We will stand as Lisa chants the prayers and we respond with the refrains listed in the right margin.

A SANCTIFIED ART: During this church season we call Lent, we are using a wonderful worship resource called “A Sanctified Art LLC.” It is a collective of artists in ministry who create resources for worshiping communities. Their mission is to empower churches with resources to inspire creativity in worship and beyond. Driven by the connective and prophetic power of art, they believe that art helps us connect our hearts with our hands, our faith with our lives, and our mess, with God. Through their art, prayers, poems and music, we hope you will find moments to connect deeply with the sacred time of traveling through the wilderness these 40 days – The Rev. Dr. Lisa Tucker-Gray

TUNE IN

Inspired by Matthew 4:1-11

Silk painting with digital drawing and collage

Artist’s Statement: In this image, the words of the Tempter hover in the background. The Tempter’s voice lingers like a ringing in Jesus’ ears, saying: “Take charge. Hoard your power. Dominate. Control.” Somehow, Jesus has deciphered that these words are simply background noise. He closes his eyes and goes inward, wrapping himself in a posture of self-embrace. From this introspective perspective, Jesus essentially says, “Get behind me, Satan.” The backdrop of this piece resembles the dust of the desert. Like sand washing along a beach, the sediment shifts into water in the top left, hinting at what bolsters Jesus in his ministry: his belonging to God. His belovedness washes over him, giving him the courage to defy the deception of the Tempter and tune into his inner wisdom. In this way, he is given a new song to carry with him, a lullaby from God that goes, “You, my child, in you, I am well-pleased.” This is a melody for singing, a song for dancing. What are the voices that linger with you like a ringing in your ears? What are the messages that try to deceive or devour you? Let those voices buzz and fade into the background. Close your eyes, tune in, and embrace yourself. From your belovedness, what song will you sing?

Collect of the Day Prayers for an Inclusive Church

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also withyou.

Leader: Let us pray.

Spirit of the desert, your drove Jesus to the edge of the world to find his true calling: scour our hearts and awaken our hunger that freed from empty clinging we might find ourselves in you; through Jesus Christ, the Lord of the wilds. Amen.

The First Lesson Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7

Reader: A reading from Genesis.

The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.”

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God say, ‘You shall not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die.’“ But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not die; for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves.

Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

All are invited to join on the refrain. The choir will offer the verses. Refrain:

REFRAIN

Blessed are you whose wrongdoings have been forgiven, whose shame has been forgotten Blessed are you in whom Love Divine finds a home, and whose spirit radiates truth.

When I acknowledged not my shortcomings, I became ill through all my defenses. And day and night, guilt weighed heavy constricting my heart; My spirit became dry as desert bones.

REFRAIN

I admitted my faults to the Most High, and I made known my regret; I cried out, “Forgive me, O Comforter, for those times I have sinned in my thoughts, my words, and my deeds;” And the Beloved created within me a clean and open heart

Therefore, let everyone who is sincere give thanks to the Beloved; For whenever we feel paralyzed by fear we shall be embraced by Love. Dwelling in the Heart of the Beloved, we are free from distress, free to live more creatively.

O my Beloved, You are my guide, You teach me to walk in the Light. Be watchful of me, counsel me as I listen to You in the Silence. I pray for the gifts of inner peace and wisdom, For the grace to reverence all of Creation.

The Second Lesson Romans 5:12-19

Reader: A reading from Romans.

As sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned sin was indeed in the world before the law, but sin is not reckoned when there is no law. Yet death exercised dominion from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who is a type of the one who was to come.

But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died through the one man's trespass, much more surely have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for the many. And the free gift is not like the effect of the one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brings justification. If, because of the one man's trespass, death exercised dominion through that one, much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness exercise dominion in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.

Therefore just as one man's trespass led to condemnation for all, so one man's act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all. For just as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous.

Reader: The Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

Gradual The Land of the Seeking Spencer LaJoyce

There’s a place you can get to without any sound

It’s a place where the wick has burned out

There’s a place at the point that’s past turning around There is a place to be lost long after you’re found

Coax your quiet questionings

Speak your soft uncertainties

There is room for these

Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Matthew. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written,

‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written,

‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor; and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! for it is written,

‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.’”

Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him. Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Sermon The Rev. Dr. Lisa Tucker-Gray

Affirmation of Faith from A Sanctified Art; Words for Worship”

We believe in a God who meets us in the shadows, who welcomes our questions, who invites us to begin again.

We believe that Jesus showed us a new way, a deeper faith,

a more compassionate existence.

We believe that all of our beginnings should return us to this foundation, and that no matter how many times we lose our way, God always welcomes us home. Amen.

Sanctus The Sound of My People

Jesus was always the guest. In the homes of Peter and Jairus, Martha and Mary, Joanna and Susanna, he was always the guest. At the meal tables of the wealthy where he pled the case of the poor, he was always the guest. Upsetting polite company, befriending isolated people, welcoming the stranger, he was always the guest.

But here, at this table, he is the host. Those who wish to serve him must first be served by him. Those who want to follow him must first be fed by him. For this is the table where God intends us to be nourished. This is the time when Christ can make us new. So come, you who hunger and thirst for a deeper faith, for a better life, for a fairer world. Jesus Christ, who has sat at our tables, now invites us to be his guests.

On their last night together, and as they were sitting at a meal, Jesus gave thanks, took a piece of bread and broke it. He gave it to the disciples saying, “This is my body. It is broken for you. Do this to remember me.”

Later, after they had eaten, he took a cup of wine, gave thanks and said, “This cup is the new relationship with God made possible because of my death. Drink this all of you, to remember me.”

So now we do as Jesus did. We offer this bread and this wine to each other, and proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People

Christ has died.

Christ is risen.

Christ will come again.

We ask that these signs of your love be filled with the fullness of Jesus. Let that same love rest on us, converting us from the patterns of this passing world, until we conform to the shape of him whose food we now share. Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,

The Lord’s Prayer Version from New Zealand Prayer Book

Eternal Spirit,

Earth-maker, Pain bearer, Life-giver, Source of all that is and that shall be, Father and Mother of us all, Loving God, in whom is heaven:

The hallowing of your name echo through the universe!

The way of your justice be followed by the peoples of the world!

With the bread we need for today, feed us.

In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us.

Your heavenly will be done by all created beings!

Your commonwealth of peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth!

In times of temptation and test, strengthen us.

From trials too great to endure, spare us. From the grip of all that is evil, free us. For you reign in the glory of the power that is love, now and forever. Amen.

Celebrant: Let us pray.

Jesus, we have feasted on the bread of life. Together we have tasted the love of your kin-dom here on earth. In your risen power you have united us with all of those who have come before, with those gathered today, and with those yet to find their way to this table of love set and ready to welcome all. May the sense of a new heaven and a new earth strengthen and renew us today and in the days to come. Now, send us out into the world to do the work you have given us to do offering your fearless love and priceless peace to all we meet in the name of our loving, liberating life-giving God. Amen.

Blessing

As we leave this place, may God bless us with seeking. Seeking out the hungry. Seeking the weary. Seeking the good in every person we pass Seeking out the hopeful. Seeking the faithful. Seeking God in everyone As we seek and as we wonder, may we all find what we are looking for. In the name of our Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer, who is always seeking us. Amen.

May the rain fall off your shoulders when you’re caught in a storm.

When the frost comes a callin’ may it find you safe and warm. May your place be set, and may your promises be kept. And may you never forget that you are loved.
