The Sixth Sunday After Pentecost Morning Devotion
Trinity@316
July 17, 2022
10:00 am
Good morning and “welcome home” to Trinity! This morning’s Trinity@316 service will be a Morning Devotion. This format is a part of our ancient Episcopal tradition and the format we are invited to use when a priest is not present to celebrate the Eucharist (also known as Communion). All the other elements of the service will be offered- music, prayers, scripture and a sermon. This is a wonderful opportunity to lift up and celebrate the gifts of leadership in our congregation. We are so glad you are here to join us today. Whether you are new to our community or have found yourself coming back again and again, we want you to know you are both welcome and wanted here among us. For some, church is as comfortable and familiar as a good pair of jeans, or like coming back to your childhood home (if it is one filled with good memories). For others, church might be like visiting a foreign country where you experience unfamiliar language or customs. And then, sadly, for some church has become equated with feelings of hurt, rejection, or shame. We get all of that, and we believe that church can and should be different. We hold in real tension the beauty of our tradition with Jesus’ mandate to welcome all, no exceptions. And we understand that if people are brave enough to walk through the doors of a big, Gothic-looking church in downtown Toledo, we’d better be serious about being progressive, inclusive and creative. In our faith community, we believe in the important work that is our shared musical language. We work to choose music and lyrics encompassing many walks of life; to give voice to different perspectives of Divine Love using both traditional and contemporary interpretation. Our hope is that the chosen words of our imperfect languages may resonate with you an eternal Truth, with all pronouns seen as holy and an expression of the expansive nature of Love. We love our Episcopal tradition, but we love people from all walks of life even more. It is our hope and prayer that together we will navigate our way through each gathering, worship service, outreach activity, class, meal and social time with humility, grace and laughter. Our reason for being is bigger than any one of us and together we strive to be about something greater than ourselves. So thank you for being here today; for trusting the yearning that brought you through those ancient doors, and for giving this place, these people, this expansive and ancient tradition an opportunity to take root in your heart. May we all find our way into this community of Love as we intentionally make room for each and all of us drawing the circle wider, and wider still still together, week after week. And may you never forget you are loved, Priest Lisa 2

Prayers for the Inclusive Church
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.
God of bandit places, love that demands our all; reveal to us our wounds and give us grace to know our neighbor, rending us with foreign hands; through Jesus Christ, who crossed over for us. Amen. Please be seated.
The First Reading Reader:
Deuteronomy 30:9-14
A reading from Deuteronomy.
Moses said to the people of Israel, "The LORD your God will make you abundantly prosperous in all your undertakings, in the fruit of your body, in the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your soil. For the LORD will again take delight in prospering you, just as he delighted in prospering your ancestors, when you obey the LORD your God by observing his commandments and decrees that are written in this book of the law, because you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. "Surely, this commandment that I am commanding you today is not too hard for you, nor is it too far away. It is not in heaven, that you should say, 'Who will go up to heaven for us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and observe it?' Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, 'Who will cross to the other side of the sea for us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and observe it?' No, the word is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart for you to observe."

The Psalm
Psalm 25: 1-9
Psalms for Praying
The cantor will offer the first line and the congregation joins on the second.
To You, O Love, I lift up my soul! O Heart within my heart, in You I place my trust. Let me not feel unworthy; let not fear rule over me. Yes! May all who open their hearts savor You and bless the earth! Compel me to know your ways, O Love; instruct me upon your paths. Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for through You will I know wholeness; I shall reflect your Light both day and night. I know of your mercy, Blessed One, and of your unconditional Love; You have been with me from the beginning. Forgive the many times I have walked away from You choosing to follow my own will. I seek your guidance, once again, I yearn to know your Peace. Companion me as I open to your Will! You are gracious and just, O Spirit of Truth, happy to guide those who miss their way; You enjoy teaching all who are open, all who choose to live in truth. Your paths are loving and sure, O Holy One, and those who give witness to You through their lives are blessed beyond measure.

The SECOND READING Reader:
Colossians 1:1-14
A reading from Colossians.
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, To the saints and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ in Colossae: Grace to you and peace from God our Father. In our prayers for you we always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. You have heard of this hope before in the word of the truth, the gospel that has come to you. Just as it is bearing fruit and growing in the whole world, so it has been bearing fruit among yourselves from the day you heard it and truly comprehended the grace of God. This you learned from Epaphras, our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, and he has made known to us your love in the Spirit. For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God's will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of God. May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

The Gospel Deacon: People:
Luke 10:25-37 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ.
Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he said, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? What do you read there?" He answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." And he said to him, "You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live." But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, `Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.' Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?" He said, "The one who showed him mercy." Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

Affirmation of Faith
From The United Church of Canada
Please rise. We are not alone, we live in God's world. We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God. We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God's presence, to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God. Amen.
The Prayers of the People
Adapted from Women’s Uncommon Prayer
Intercessor: Open our lips, O Spirit, that we may proclaim love’s truth and call for justice in our communities, in our congregations, and in the world. People: Spirit, open our lips. Intercessor: Open our minds, O Creator, that we might dream a Church reconciled, a Church that knows your love so abundantly it bursts with a passion for ministry, a desire to give completely, and seeks only to give back. People: Creator, open our minds. Intercessor: Open our hearts, O Giver of Gifts, to be transformed by compassion, so we will serve others with humility, integrity and urgency. People: Giver of Gifts, open our hearts. Intercessor: Open our eyes, O Sanctifier of Life, to the hurts and needs of others. Teach us to see where we are needed and how our abilities and resources can be used for good. People: Sanctifier of Life, open our eyes. Intercessor: Open our hands, O Spirit, to be your instruments of gospel witness. Help us work without caution, serve without recognition, and proclaim justice, love and kindness, in your name. People: Spirit, open our hands.

Intercessor: Open our memories, O Redeemer of All, as we tenderly remember those who have asked for our prayers, and those known to you alone. People: Redeemer of All, open our memories. Intercessor: God, your love is free, your compassion unconditional, and your mercy infinite. Grant that we may know and trust these gifts cultivating kindness and generosity of spirit in our lives each and every day. Amen.
The Confession of Sin & Absolution
Enriching our Worship
Leader:
Let us confess our sins to God.
People:
Creator God, long-suffering, full of grace and truth, You create us from nothing and give us life abundant. You give us new life in the water of baptism. You never turn your face from us, nor cast us aside. We confess we have turned against you and against our neighbor, in thought, word and deed. We have wounded your love and marred your image in us. Restore us for the sake of your Son, and bring us to heavenly joy, in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Leader:
May the God of love bring us back to all that is good in us. May we be forgiven of all wrongdoing and welcome God’s grace anew in our life this day. May God’s assurance strengthen our resolve to begin again in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
THE PEACE Deacon: People:
The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

Parker Palmer
And now let us pray together this contemporary version of the Lord’s prayer.
Heavenly Father, heavenly Mother, Holy and blessed is your true name. We pray for your reign of peace to come, We pray that your good will be done, Let heaven and earth become one. Give us this day the bread we need, Give it to those who have none. Let forgiveness flow like a river between us, From each one to each one. Lead us to holy innocence Beyond the evil of our days — Come swiftly Mother, Father, come. For yours is the power and the glory and the mercy: Forever your name is All in One. Amen.
Sung Benediction May the rain fall off your shoulders when you’re caught in a storm. When the frost comes a callin’ may it find you safe and warm. May your place be set, and may your promises be kept. And may you never forget that you are loved.
