Collect of the Day Priest: People: Priest:

Prayers for an Inclusive Church by Stephen Shakespeare

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.

God of all people from every tribe and language; you call true witnesses who sing your praise, live your grace and work for peace: may we share their faith and know our need for you that we might be a blessing to the hunger of your world; through Jesus Christ, whose body we are, Amen. Please be seated.

The First Reading Reader:

Ecclesiasticus 44:1-10, 13-14

A reading from Ecclesiasticus.

Let us now sing the praises of famous women and men, our ancestors in their generations. The Lord apportioned to them great glory, his majesty from the beginning. There were those who ruled in their kingdoms, and made a name for themselves by their valor; those who gave counsel because they were intelligent; those who spoke in prophetic oracles; those who led the people by their counsels and by their knowledge of the people's lore; they were wise in their words of instruction; those who composed musical tunes, or put verses in writing; rich men endowed with resources, living peacefully in their homes – all these were honored in their generations, and were the pride of their times. Some of them have left behind a name, so that others declare their praise. But of others there is no memory; they have perished as though they had never existed; they have become as though they had never been born, they and their children after them. But these also were godly people, whose righteous deeds have not been forgotten. Their offspring will continue forever, and their glory will never be blotted out. Their bodies are buried in peace, but their name lives on generation after generation. Reader: People:

The Psalm

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 34:1-10, 22

Psalms for Praying by Nan Merrill

The cantor will offer the first line and the congregation is invited to join on the second.

I will bless the Beloved at all times; a song of praise will I sing. My soul speaks to the Beloved continually; let all who suffer hear and be glad. O, open your hearts, friends, that your pain and loneliness be turned to Love; And then, we shall rejoice in the Beloved together! When I searched for Love, the Beloved answered within my heart, and all my fears flew away. Look to the Beloved, and your emptiness will be filled, your face will radiate Love. 4

For when you weep, the Beloved hears and comes to companion you; your burdens are eased by Love. The Beloved sends angels when you call upon these messengers for guidance and light, for their gracious inspiration, One with Love, you are never alone! Happy are all who dwell in the Beloved’s heart! Abandon yourself into Love’s hands, O you holy ones, For those who give themselves to the Beloved, lack no good thing. Everyone separated from Love is empty and hungry within; But those who open their hearts to the Beloved, are filled to overflowing! Though we are beset with many fears that cause illness and troubles, The Beloved is ever ready to comfort us in our sorrows, to strengthen us on our soul’s journey to wholeness. The Beloved renews the life of all who surrender to Love.

The SECOND READING Reader:

Revelation 7:2-4,9-17

A reading from Revelation.

After this I, John, looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, "Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!" And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, singing, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen." Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?" I said to him, "Sir, you are the one that knows." Then he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. "For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." Why We Sing

Kirk Franklin

Please rise. Someone asked the question “Why do we sing, When we lift our hands to Jesus, What do we really mean?” Someone may be wonderin’ When we sing our song At times we may be crying When nothing’s even wrong.

I sing because I’m happy I sing because I’m free Their eye is on the sparrow That’s the reason why I sing Glory Hallelujah You’re the reason why I sing Glory Hallelujah You’re the reason why I sing (repeat)

The Gospel Deacon: People:

Matthew 5:1-12 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. "Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you." Deacon: People:

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Affirmation of Faith

Bruce D. Prewer

We believe in the God of Jesus of Nazareth, who blesses the meek, the poor and the persecuted, exalts the least and saves the lost. We believe in the Holy One whose beloved Child, Jesus the Christ, pleased God far more than tongue or pen can ever tell. 6

We believe in the baptized Christ, and the community of love and hope which grew around his word and witness. We believe that he is the first citizen of a new race, where the entry fee is Divine grace, and the ground rules are shaped by love. We believe in the baptism of the Holy Spirit, By whom old things find new birth, and new things grow on to maturity, and the dead receive regeneration. We believe in one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and in the limitless life which flows for the healing of the nations. Amen.

People:

Recognizing our gifts as miracles enabling our ministry, serve our neighbors, and strengthen our community, we gather to offer our prayers with gratitude. We pray for the Church, the inspiration and inheritance of our gifts of wealth, works, and wisdom. We offer prayers for all the leaders known and unknown who work tirelessly to make your love visible in the world. When we give out of our abundance, there is always more than enough. We pray for the world, your greatest miracle. May we who inherit this earth be wise stewards of Creation and kind caretakers of all your creatures. We pray for those who lead our nations. May they use the plentiful resources they steward to care for the people of the world. When we give out of our abundance, there is always more than enough. We pray for our neighbors and all who need our love and care. For those who are marginalized and oppressed; those who are sick and those who are dying; for the lonely and isolated; for those who are suffering; and for those who sleep on our streets. We pray for all on our Trinity prayer list, and those we name now. (You are invited to offer your intercessions either spoken aloud or silently in your hearts.) When we give out of our abundance, there is always more than enough. We pray for those who have died. May they forever gather at your table of plenty, sharing their gifts with love and joy. We remember those whose gifts, bequests, and intentions provide inspiration and abundance beyond their lifetimes. When we give out of our abundance, there is always more than enough. As the crowd gathered to hear Jesus preach shared two fish and five loaves, they discovered when their gifts were blessed, they increased and became a blessing to others. May the depth of our gratitude increase every day for the uncountable miracles and blessings in our lives. When we give out of our abundance, there is always more than enough. 7

Leader:

May we, too, reach within ourselves to share our gifts with the world so that our love overflows in a need-filled world. For these and all things we ask in the name of Your Son, our liberator and friend. Amen.

The Confession of Sin & Absolution

Enriching Our Worship

Celebrant: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence may be kept. Celebrant and People: God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen. Celebrant: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

 The Liturgy of the Table  Celebrant: People: Celebrant: People: Celebrant: People:

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Enriching Our Worship

We Thank you for calling us to an adventure of faith. You made us in your image to respond to your grace; your story came alive with the children of Israel, of Leah and Rachel, of Zilpah and Bilhah and a promise was born that one day no face would be forgotten, no body enslaved, no spirit broken, but all would join the covenant of life. You sent your Son in solidarity with us, healing our sickness and confronting demons; he bore the cross and rose again to disclose our true humanity. Therefore with all your unlikely saints, with the church of many times and languages, with those who have known you under different names, we sing the glorious liberty of all the children of God:

Sanctus

The Sound of My People by M. Roger Holland II

Glory and honor are yours, Creator of all, your Word has never been silent; you called a people to yourself, as a light to the nations, you delivered them from bondage and led them to a land of promise. Of your grace, you gave Jesus to be human, to share our life, to proclaim the coming of your holy reign and give himself for us, a fragrant offering. Through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, you have freed us from sin, brought us into your life, reconciled us to you, and restored us to the glory you intend for us. We thank you that on the night before he died for us Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, gave it to his friends and said: “Take, eat, this is my Body, broken for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing, gave it to his friends and said: “Drink this, all of you: this cup is the new Covenant in my Blood, poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.” And so, remembering all that was done for us: the cross, the tomb, the resurrection and ascension, longing for Christ’s coming in glory, and presenting to you these gifts your earth has formed, and human hands have made, we acclaim you, O Christ: Celebrant and People Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Christ Jesus, come in glory! Send you Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts of bread and wine that they may be to you the Body and Blood of your Christ. Grant that we, burning with your Spirit’s power, may be a people of hope, justice and love. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, we worship you our God and Creator in voices of unending praise. AMEN.

The Lord’s Prayer

Parker Palmer And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we pray this version of the Lord’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, heavenly Mother, Holy and blessed is your true name. We pray for your reign of peace to come, We pray that your good will be done, Let heaven and earth become one. Give us this day the bread we need, Give it to those who have none. Let forgiveness flow like a river between us, From each one to each one. Lead us to holy innocence Beyond the evil of our days — Come swiftly Mother, Father, come. For yours is the power and the glory and the mercy: Forever your name is All in One. Amen.
