Collect of the Day Priest: People: Priest:

Prayers for an Inclusive Church by Stephen Shakespeare

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.

God of servant rule, your kin-dom breaks our tangled webs where state and church collude to worship power and trade on fear.: grant us the wit and will to give you what is your own, no more nor less than all the world and time; through Jesus Christ, whose kin-dom comes. Amen. Please be seated.

The First Reading Reader:

Exodus 33:12-23

A reading from Exodus.

Moses said to the Lord, “See, you have said to me, ‘Bring up this people’; but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’ Now if I have found favor in your sight, show me your ways, so that I may know you and find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.” He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” And he said to him, “If your presence will not go, do not carry us up from here. For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people, unless you go with us? In this way, we shall be distinct, I and your people, from every people on the face of the earth.” The Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very thing that you have asked; for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.” Moses said, “Show me your glory, I pray.” And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim before you the name, ‘The Lord’; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. But,” he said, “you cannot see my face; for no one shall see me and live.” And the Lord continued, “See, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock; and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by; then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back; but my face shall not be seen.” Reader: People:

The Psalm

Psalm 99

Psalms for Praying by Nan Merrill

The cantor will offer the first line and the congregation is invited to join on the second.

Awaken, O you people! Entrust your hearts to Love. For the Beloved reigns supreme; let all the earth give thanks! Your unseen Presence is great in the land; You sit with the leaders of nations. Let them be silent and guided by your Voice! Holy are You! You are mighty and love justice, You establish equity; Out of the Silence, your Word can be heard in the land inviting the nations to live in peace. Listen O you people! Open your hearts to the Beloved, that Truth may be born anew! Many who have gone before you followed the Beloved's Voice, the unknown saints of all generations. They surrendered themselves into the Beloved's hands, and walked with confidence. They were guided through difficult times, keeping to Love's way and trusting in Love's promises. O Heart of all hearts, You answered their prayers; With mercy, You forgave them their wrongdoings, always inviting them to new life. Sing praises to the Beloved, and aspire to ascend the holy mountain. Holy are You, O Giver of Life!

The SECOND READING Reader:

Philippians 4:1-9

A reading from Philippians.

My brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved. I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. Yes, and I ask you also, my loyal companion, help these women, for they have struggled beside me in the work of the gospel, together with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the book of life. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you. Reader: People:

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God..

Why We Sing

Kirk Franklin

Please rise. Someone asked the question “Why do we sing, When we lift our hands to Jesus, What do we really mean?” Someone may be wonderin’ When we sing our song At times we may be crying When nothing’s even wrong.

I sing because I’m happy I sing because I’m free Their eye is on the sparrow That’s the reason why I sing Glory Hallelujah You’re the reason why I sing (repeat)

The Gospel Deacon: People:

Matthew 22:15-22 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

The Pharisees went and plotted to entrap Jesus in what he said. So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?” But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin used for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. Then he said to them, “Whose head is this, and whose title?” They answered, “The emperor’s.” Then he said to them, “Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away. Affirmation of Faith

Bruce D. Prewer

We believe in the God of Jesus of Nazareth, who blesses the meek, the poor and the persecuted, exalts the least and saves the lost. We believe in the Holy One whose beloved Child, Jesus the Christ, pleased God far more than tongue or pen can ever tell. We believe in the baptized Christ, and the community of love and hope which grew around his word and witness. We believe that he is the first citizen of a new race, where the entry fee is Divine grace, and the ground rules are shaped by love. We believe in the baptism of the Holy Spirit, By whom old things find new birth, and new things grow on to maturity, and the dead receive regeneration. We believe in one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and in the limitless life which flows for the healing of the nations. Amen.

The Prayers of the People Leader:

Recognizing our gifts as miracles enabling our ministry, serve our neighbors, and strengthen our community, we gather to offer our prayers with gratitude.

Leader:

We pray for the Church, the inspiration and inheritance of our gifts of wealth, works, and wisdom. We offer prayers for all the leaders known and unknown who work tirelessly to make your love visible in the world. When we give out of our abundance, there is always more than enough.

People: Leader:

People:

We pray for the world, your greatest miracle. May we who inherit this earth be wise stewards of Creation and kind caretakers of all your creatures. We pray for those who lead our nations. May they use the plentiful resources they steward to care for the people of the world. When we give out of our abundance, there is always more than enough. We pray for our neighbors and all who need our love and care. For those who are marginalized and oppressed; those who are sick and those who are dying; for the lonely and isolated; for those who are suffering; and for those who sleep on our streets. We pray for all on our Trinity prayer list, and those we name now. When we give out of our abundance, there is always more than enough.

Leader:

People: Leader:

People: Leader:

We pray for those who have died. May they forever gather at your table of plenty, sharing their gifts with love and joy. We remember those whose gifts, bequests, and intentions provide inspiration and abundance beyond their lifetimes. When we give out of our abundance, there is always more than enough. As the crowd gathered to hear Jesus preach shared two fish and five loaves, they discovered when their gifts were blessed, they increased and became a blessing to others. May the depth of our gratitude increase every day for the uncountable miracles and blessings in our lives. When we give out of our abundance, there is always more than enough. May we, too, reach within ourselves to share our gifts with the world so that our love overflows in a need-filled world. For these and all things we ask in the name of Your Son, our liberator and friend. Amen.

The Confession of Sin & Absolution

Enriching Our Worship

Celebrant: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence may be kept. Celebrant and People: God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen. Celebrant: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Enriching Our Worship

All thanks and praise are yours at all times and in all places, our true and loving God; through Jesus Christ, your eternal Word, the Wisdom from on high by whom you created all things. You laid foundations of the world and enclosed the sea when it burst out from the womb; You brought forth all creatures of the earth and gave breath to humankind. Wondrous are you, Holy One of Blessing, all you create is a sign of hope for our journey; and so as the morning stars sing your praises we join the heavenly beings and all creation as we shout with joy:

Glory and honor are yours, Creator of all, your Word has never been silent; you called a people to yourself, as a light to the nations, you delivered them from bondage and led them to a land of promise. Of your grace, you gave Jesus to be human, to share our life, to proclaim the coming of your holy reign and give himself for us, a fragrant offering. Through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, you have freed us from sin, brought us into your life, reconciled us to you, and restored us to the glory you intend for us. We thank you that on the night before he died for us Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, gave it to his friends and said: “Take, eat, this is my Body, broken for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing, gave it to his friends and said: “Drink this, all of you: this cup is the new Covenant in my Blood, poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.” And so, remembering all that was done for us: the cross, the tomb, the resurrection and ascension, longing for Christ’s coming in glory, and presenting to you these gifts your earth has formed, and human hands have made, we acclaim you, O Christ: Celebrant and People Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Christ Jesus, come in glory! Send you Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts of bread and wine that they may be to you the Body and Blood of your Christ. Grant that we, burning with your Spirit’s power, may be a people of hope, justice and love. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, we worship you our God and Creator in voices of unending praise. AMEN.

The Lord’s Prayer

Parker Palmer And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we pray this version of the Lord’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, heavenly Mother, Holy and blessed is your true name. We pray for your reign of peace to come, We pray that your good will be done, Let heaven and earth become one. Give us this day the bread we need, Give it to those who have none. Let forgiveness flow like a river between us, From each one to each one. Lead us to holy innocence Beyond the evil of our days — Come swiftly Mother, Father, come. For yours is the power and the glory and the mercy: Forever your name is All in One. Amen. 9

The Post Communion Prayer (Please rise.) Celebrant: Let us pray. Jesus, we have feasted on the bread of life. Together we have tasted the love of your kin-dom here on earth. In your risen power you have united us with all of those who have come before, with those gathered today, and with those yet to find their way to this table of love set and ready to welcome all. May the sense of a new heaven and a new earth strengthen and renew us today and in the days to come. Now, send us out into the world to do the work you have given us to do offering your fearless love and priceless peace to all we meet in the name of our loving, liberating life-giving God. Amen
