Franz Schubert

LEVAS #105

Welcome Collect of the day Celebrant: People: Celebrant:

All:

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. God of the narrow way, you call us to shed all that burdens the lightness of life: help us to surrender false wealth, embrace our need of you and live for your kingdom above all things; through Jesus Christ, the richness of God. Amen.

Please be seated for the Lessons

The First Lesson Reader:

Amos 5:6-7, 10-15

A reading from the book of Amos

Seek the LORD and live, or he will break out against the house of Joseph like fire, and it will devour Bethel, with no one to quench it. Ah, you that turn justice to wormwood, and bring righteousness to the ground! They hate the one who reproves in the gate, and they abhor the one who speaks the truth. Therefore, because you trample on the poor and take from them levies of grain, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not live in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine. For I know how many are your transgressions, and how great are your sins— 3

you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and push aside the needy in the gate. Therefore the prudent will keep silent in such a time; for it is an evil time. Seek good and not evil, that you may live; and so the LORD, the God of hosts, will be with you, just as you have said. Hate evil and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the LORD, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph. Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People. People: Thanks be to God.

LEVAS #273

12 So teach us to number our days * that we may apply our hearts to wisdom. 13 Return, O LORD; how long will you tarry? * be gracious to your servants. 14 Satisfy us by your loving-kindness in the morning; * so shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life. Refrain 15 Make us glad by the measure of the days that you afflicted us * and the years in which we suffered adversity. 16 Show your servants your works * and your splendor to their children. 17 May the graciousness of the LORD our God be upon us; * prosper the work of our hands; prosper our handiwork. Refrain

The second Lesson Reader:

Hebrews 4:12-16

A reading from Hebrews

The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Reader: People:

The Gospel Celebrant: People:

Mark 10:17-31 The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honor your father and mother.’” He said to him, “Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth.” Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, “You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” They were greatly astounded and said to one another, “Then who can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible.” Peter began to say to him, “Look, we have left everything and followed you.” Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age—houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.” Celebrant: People: 8

Sermon Nicene Creed

The Rev. Dr. Lisa Tucker-Gray The Book of Common Prayer p. 358

(Please stand as you are able.)

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 9

God, pour out your Spirit on your people. Send us out to testify to the new life the risen Christ has shown us. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Cover all of creation with your Spirit. Spark renewal in areas that have been damaged or destroyed so new life will spring forth in waters, fields, and forests. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Give us your life-giving Spirit. Restore those who struggle with broken relationships, personal crisis, or poor health, especially those we now name… (pause) Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Give your Spirit of encouragement and strength to all who put the good of others before themselves: military personnel, emergency workers, medical professionals, social workers, advocates for the poor and aging. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. As we remember the witness of the saints, make us a faithful community by your Spirit until the day when your Spirit gathers us all into your eternal reign. We pray for those who have died, especially those we now name… (pause) Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Let the light of your Spirit shine in the lives of those we love, filling them with the assurance of your love and care, especially those we now name… (pause) Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Trusting in your abundant mercy, O God, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray into your care, through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

The Confession of Sin & Absolution Celebrant:

Let us confess our sins to God. (silence may be kept)

Celebrant and People: Creator God, long-suffering, full of grace and truth, you create us from nothing and give us life abundant. You give us new life in the water of baptism. You never turn your face from us, nor cast us aside. We confess we have turned against you and against our neighbor, in thought, word and deed. We have wounded your love and marred your image in us. Restore us for the sake of your Son, and bring us to heavenly joy, in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Celebrant:

All:

May the God of love bring you back to all that is good in you. May you be forgiven of all wrongdoing and welcome God’s grace anew in your life this day. May God’s assurance strengthen your resolve to begin again in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Peace Celebrant: People:

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Celebrant continues: All thanks and praise are yours at all times and in all places, our true and loving God; through Jesus Christ, your eternal Word, the Wisdom from on high by whom you created all things. You laid the foundations of the world and enclosed the sea when it burst out from the womb; you brought forth all creatures of the earth and gave breath to humankind. Wondrous are you, Holy One of Blessing, all you create is a sign of hope for our journey; and so as the morning stars sing your praises we join the heavenly beings and all creation as we shout with joy: 12

Sanctus

The celebrant continues:

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord

Glory and honor are yours, Creator of all, your Word has never been silent; you called a people to yourself, as a light to the nations, you delivered them from bondage and led them to a land of promise. Of your grace, you gave Jesus to be human, to share our life, to proclaim the coming of your holy reign and give himself for us, a fragrant offering. Through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, you have freed us from sin, brought us into your life, reconciled us to you, and restored us to the glory you intend for us. We thank you that on the night before he died for us Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, gave it to his friends and said: “Take, eat, this is my Body, broken for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing, gave it to his friends and said: “Drink this, all of you: this cup is the new Covenant in my Blood, poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.” 13

And so, remembering all that was done for us: the cross, the tomb, the resurrection and ascension, longing for Christ’s coming in glory, and presenting to you these gifts your earth has formed and human hands have made, we acclaim you, O Christ: All:

Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Christ Jesus, come in glory!

Celebrant continues: Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts of bread and wine that they may be to us the Body and Blood of your Christ. Grant that we, burning with your Spirit’s power, may be a people of hope, justice and love. Giver of Life, draw us together in the Body of Christ, and in the fullness of time gather us with all your people into the joy of our true eternal home. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, we worship you our God and Creator in voices of unending praise. All:

14

Amen.

The gifts of God for the people of God. Holy food, for holy people.

(Please be seated until you are invited to come forward to receive communion.) We welcome ALL to come forward to receive the bread and wine we offer as a sign of God’s love in and for our lives. (We have bread, gluten-free wafers, wine, and grape juice.) To receive the bread—put your hands together (palms up) in front of you. Either eat the bread and drink from the chalice or dip the bread in the chalice. If you are unable to come forward and wish to have Communion brought to you, please inform a greeter. During communion, anyone who would like to have prayers said with/for them may go to the Healing Prayer station at the back of the worship space. Healing prayer can take the form of asking for prayers for yourself or those you love. Healing prayer may also be a quiet time for you to seek out God’s love in silence. All are welcome to take advantage of this opportunity, but no one is required; know that you are welcome and wanted just as you are.

For some, church is as comfortable and familiar as a good pair of jeans, or like coming back to your childhood home (if it is one filled with good memories). For others, church might be like visiting a foreign country where you experience unfamiliar language or customs. And then, sadly, for some church has become equated with feelings of hurt, rejection, or shame. We get all of that, and believe that church can be different.

We hold in real tension the beauty of our tradition with Jesus’ mandate to welcome all, no exceptions. And we get that if people are brave enough to walk through the doors of a big, Gothic-looking church in downtown Toledo, we’d better be serious about being progressive, inclusive and creative.

Good morning and “welcome home” to Trinity! Whether you are new to our community or have found yourself coming back again and again, we want you to know you are both welcome and wanted here among us.

We love our Episcopal tradition, but we love people from all walks of life even more. It is our hope and prayer that together we will navigate our way through each gathering, worship service, outreach activity, class, meal and social time with humility, grace and laughter. So thank you for being here today; for trusting the yearning that brought you through those ancient doors. May we all find our way into the heart of God’s love as we make room for each and all of us at the Table of love we set together week after week. May you never forget you are loved,
