The Work of The People (TWOTP) by Kelly Ann Hall
Read by Lisa Tucker-Gray
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. 2
Welcome Spirit Wind, Animator, Sustainer, You birthed the cosmos, ever expanding, every system in perpetual motion. You circulate over earth, breeze across the surface of eternal waters, teasing waves to roll; You twist up the dusty ground, and give dimension to your beloved, You inspirit the dead! Create space in the hearth of our being, to welcome Spirit Fire, the ignitor of true life! Take up our hearts, surrendered, kindling before your Breath— spark to flicker
flicker to flame, stoke the hearts of your people! Like floating embers off the tongue, one anthem will rise and, emblazoned by faith, will catch on like wildfire! Unity is the work of the Spirit, Gather us to Your Lifeforce, O God Leave no coal unlit! Not one soul in the cold! Thank you for tending to your Light within us, O God. Thank you for sustaining the light of our souls.
FIRST READING Reader:
ACTS 2:1-21 A reading from Acts
Read by Leah Reed
When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-- in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine." But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: `In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; 3 and they shall prophesy.
And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' "

Psalms for Praying
The congregation is invited to sing the last two lines of every stanza (in bold); the notes provided follow the soprano part.
O You, who know all / hearts, How manifold are your / works! In wisdom You have created them / all; The earth is filled with your / creatures. We look to the seas, great and wide, which teem with life in- / numerable, Helping to maintain the / balance. O, that we might receive your / gifts, Taking only what is needed with grateful / hearts. All of creation looks / to You, To give them food in due / season. When we are in harmony / with You, The earth provides; a bountiful harvest to be shared with / all. When we misuse what You have created / for us, We blame You for the famine and destruction that ensues, and feel alienated from / You. Even so, You continue to send forth your / Spirit, The earth, though not without turmoil, is / renewed. The glory of the Radiant One endures for- / ever, For the works of Love are / sure. You are ever-present to us, even as the earth / trembles, Even as the mountains spew forth ashes and / smoke! I will abandon myself into your hands as long as / I live; I will sing praise to You while I have / breath. May my meditations be pleasing / to You, For I rejoice and am glad in / You. 4
May all who feel separated / from You Open their hearts to new / Life! Praise the Creator of the / Universe! Bless the Heart of my heart, O my / soul!
SECOND READING Reader:
1 Corinthians 12: 3b-13 A reading from First Corinthians
Read by Roberta Durham
No one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body-- Jews or Greeks, slaves or free-- and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

THE GOSPEL Celebrant: People:
John 20:19-23 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John Glory to you, Lord Christ.
When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil and renew your commitment to Jesus Christ? I do. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God’s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God’s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will, with God’s help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? I will, with God’s help. Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God’s help.

The Celebrant concludes: May Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and bestowed upon us the forgiveness of sins, keep us in eternal life by his grace, in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Lord’s Prayer
Version by Parker Palmer
The congregation is invited to join.
Led by Alice Todd
Heavenly Father, heavenly Mother, Holy and blessed is your true name. We pray for your reign of peace to come, We pray that your good will be done, Let heaven and earth become one. Give us this day the bread we need, Give it to those who have none. Let forgiveness flow like a river between us, From each one to each one. Lead us to holy innocence Beyond the evil of our days — Come swiftly Mother, Father, come. For yours is the power and the glory and the mercy: Forever your name is All in One. Amen. 8
Blessing
May the rain fall off your shoulders when you’re caught in a storm. When the frost comes a callin’ may it find you safe and warm. May your place be set, and may your promises bekept. And may you never forget that you are loved.
Sending Hymn
Breathe on Me, Breath of God
Edwin Hatch (1878)
(Canterbury Choir)
Breathe on me, Breath of God; fill me with life anew, that I may love what thou dost love, and do what thou wouldst do. Breathe on me, Breath of God, until my heart is pure, until with thee I will one will, to do and to endure. Breathe on me, Breath of God, till I am wholly thine, until this earthly part of me glows with thy fire divine. Breathe on me, Breath of God, so shall I never die, but live with thee the perfect life of thine eternity.
