Opening Collect Celebrant: People:

Celebrant:

Come, Great Spirit!

Voice over by Chelsie Cree (written by Chris Neufelderdman, The Work of The People)

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.

Holy Spirit, Presence of God Holy Breath Life Divine! Holy Wind Mover and Shaker! We throw open our hearts before you; We cast down every barrier to your freedom: We yield to your boundless nature; we welcome your wildness. Too long have we tried to tame the wind; too long have we sought to control what’s wild; too long have we stood in domination over the Earth.

At this moment of Earth’s great groaning, yearning, as if in labor, to birth what’s holy and enduring, come, breathe, blow, move upon us all – that Earth and all that’s in it may thrive; that Earth and all that’s in it may love; that Earth and all that’s in it may live. In the harmony and wholeness you desire for us and all creation! Come great spirit! Breath, blow. Move upon us! Here! Now! Come, great spirit! Here now! May it be so!

FIRST Reading Reader:

Isaiah 55: 1-5 Read by Dave Beckwith

A reading from Isaiah

Thus says the Lord: "Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. See, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. See, you shall call nations that you do not know, and nations that do not know you shall run to you, because of the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you."

Psalm 17: 1-7,15

From Psalms for Praying

(Offered by Chelsie Cree, Kim Buehler & Lisa Tucker-Gray, Jobst Choral Scholars) Please join us in singing the REFRAIN between the verses- offered by our cantors.

REFRAIN

REFRAIN Listen to my heart, O Love Divine; hear the cry with- / in me! Heed my prayer from lips that would utter / truth! For in You do I seek / justice! Be Thou my eyes that I may see with / clarity. If You try my heart, if You visit me by / night, if You test me, You will dis- / cover My only desire is to draw closer to / You. I see the injustice and the oppression piercing the hearts of your / people. REFRAIN Be Thou my feet that I may walk along / your paths; that I may be a benevolent presence on life’s / highway. I call upon You / knowing You will answer / me, Heart of my heart; incline your ear to me, hear / my words. Wondrously show your steadfast love, O Love Di- / vine, You walk beside me giving me / strength to face the fears that dwell with- / in. For I shall behold your face in / Truth, when I am fully a- / wake, I shall dwell in the / house of love and peace and / joy! REFRAIN

SECOND READING Reader:

Romans 9: 1-5 Read by Lindsey Melden

A reading from Romans

I am speaking the truth in Christ-- I am not lying; my conscience confirms it by the Holy Spirit- I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, comes the Messiah, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

THE GOSPEL

Matthew 14: 13-21

Celebrant:

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew Glory to you, Lord Christ.

People:

Jesus withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” They replied, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.” And he said, “Bring them here to me.” Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Celebrant:

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Reflection

Donna Steppe, Trinity Member

An Affirmation of Faith

From Shore to Shore Led by Joan Fothergill Please join the leader in sharing the words of this Affirmation of Faith

We believe in God, the creator of all life and beauty, who blesses our journey. We believe in Jesus Christ, who lived as a friend and savior to all he met as he traveled, And who ate and laughed, wept and celebrated with them in love. We believe in the Holy Spirit, who rides on the gentle breeze, who strengthens our bindings, and who offers hope eternal. We believe in the church, Which stands open to all travelers, And bears witness to the everlasting love of God. Amen.

Prayers of the People & Confession of Sin

Led by Gary Franklin from the Iona Community

Please join the leader in sharing the responses in bold. Let us pray. Gracious God, early in the morning, when the world was young, you made life in all its beauty and terror, you gave birth to all that we know. ALL: Hallowed be your name.

One:

One:

Early in the morning, when the world least expected it, a newborn child crying in a cradle announced that you had come among us, that you were one of us. ALL: Hallowed be your name. One:

Early in the morning, surrounded by respectable liars, religious leaders, anxious and silent friends, you accepted the penalty for doing good, for being God: you shouldered and suffered the cross. ALL: Hallowed be your name. One:

Early in the morning, a voice in a guarded graveyard and footsteps in the dew proved that you had risen, that you had come back to those and for those who had forgotten, denied and destroyed you. ALL: Hallowed be your name. One:

Early in the morning, in the multicolored company of your Church on earth and in heaven we celebrate your creation, your life, your death and resurrection, your interest in us: So to you we pray‌

ALL: God, bring new life where we are worn and tired, new love where we have turned hard-hearted, forgiveness where we feel hurt and where we have been wounded, and the joy and freedom in your Holy Spirit where we are the prisoners of ourselves. (pause for silence) One:

To all and to each where regret is real, God pronounces pardon and grants us the right to begin again. ALL: Thanks be to God. AMEN.

The Peace Celebrant: People:

The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. 6

Lord’s Prayer The congregation is invited to join.

Led by Hugh Grefe

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

May the rain fall off your shoulders when you’re caught in a storm. When the frost comes a callin’ may it find you safe and warm. May your place be set, and may your promises be kept. And may you never forget that you are loved.

‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus

Louisa M. R. Stead

’Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, And to take Him at His word. Just to rest upon His promise, And to know, “Thus saith the Lord.” REFRAIN:

Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him! How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er! Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust Him more! Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus, Just from sin and self to cease.
