Morning Prayer Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost Proper XVI
August 25, 2019 10:00am
ď ˜ Morning Prayer ď ˜ Today we will be using the Morning Prayer liturgy, as it can be led with or without an ordained clergy, since it does not call for Communion. The focus of Morning Prayer is on the Lessons, the Sermon, and the Collects (prayers), which were beautifully written by theologians and poets for the Glory of God throughout the years.

Here I Am to Worship
Michael W. Smith
(Please stand as you are able.)
The verses will be offered by a soloist. The soloist will invite you to join in the refrain.
OPENING SENTENCE
Enriching our Worship, p. 19
(Please remain standing as you are able.) Officiant: People:
God is Spirit, and those who worship must worship in spirit and in truth. Amen.
Confession & Absolution Officiant: Officiant & People:
Let us confess our sins to God. God of mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serving only your will. Amen. 2
Officiant:
Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.
The INVITATORY & PSALTER Officiant: People: Officiant & People:
O God, let our mouth proclaim your praise. And your glory all the day long. Praise to the holy and undivided Trinity, one God: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.
JUBILATE (PSALM 100) Officiant: Officiant & People:
Nan Merrill, Psalm for Praying The Holy One is in our midst: O come let us worship. Sing a joyful noise to the Beloved all peoples of the earth! Serve Love with a glad heart. Join hands in the great Dance of Life. Know that the Beloved of your heart is the Divine Presence. Love created us, and we belong to the Most High; We are born to be loving, expressions of the Creator's Divine Plan. Open the gates of your heart with gratitude and enter Love's court with praise. Give thanks to the Beloved, bless Love's holy Name! For Love is of God, and lives in your heart forever, with faith, truth, and joy, now and in all that is to come. Alleluia! Amen!

Song of Praise
Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing

LEVAS #111
psalm of the day
Psalm 81:1, 10-16 The Psalm will be spoken by everyone. Sing in unison to the Most High, our strength; shout for joy and join the celebration! Raise a song, sound the great bells, the flute and the harp. Blow the trumpet at the new moon, at the full moon, and on all the feast days. Who among you will listen to the voice of the Beloved? How many will open their heart? All you too stubborn to hear, who follow your own counsel, will know fear and loneliness.
( From Psalms for Praying: An Invitation to Wholeness)
This summer, rather than use the standard NRSV scripture translations for our Psalms, we will be using Nan Merrill’s transliteration of the Psalms. The complete book of Psalms is titled: Psalms for Praying- An Invitation to Wholeness.
“Oh that my people would listen, that, as friends, you would walk in my ways! Your fears would soon flee and your hearts would overflow. You, who turn your back on Love, will know only momentary pleasure, your reward will soon be spent. I would satisfy your hunger, and, with streams of Living Water, you would live in the joy of heaven here on earth!”
The First Lesson (Please be seated for the Lessons.) Reader:
Isaiah 58:9b-14
A reading from Isaiah.
If you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil, if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday. The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail. Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in. If you refrain from trampling the sabbath, from pursuing your own interests on my holy day; if you call the sabbath a delight and the holy day of the Lord honorable; if you honor it, not going your own ways, serving your own interests, or pursuing your own affairs; then you shall take delight in the Lord, and I will make you ride upon the heights of the earth; I will feed you with the heritage of your ancestor Jacob, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. Reader: People:
Here ends the Lesson. Thanks be to God. 5
Canticle Response
Canticle A: Wisdom 10:15-19, 20b-21
(Please stand as you are able.)
Officiant & People: Wisdom freed from a nation of oppressors, a holy people and a blameless race. She entered the soul of a servant of the Lord, withstood dread rulers with wonders and signs. To the saints she gave the reward of their labors, and led them by a marvelous way; she was their shelter by day and a blaze of stars by night. She brought them across the Red Sea, she led them through mighty waters; but their enemies she swallowed in the waves and spewed them out from the depths of the abyss. And then, Lord, the righteous sang hymns to your Name, and praised with one voice your protecting hand; for Wisdom opened the mouths of the mute, and gave speech to the tongues of a new-born people. Praise to the holy and undivided Trinity, one God: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.
The Second Lesson (Please be seated.) Reader:
Luke 13:10-17
A reading from the Gospel of Luke.
Now Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, "Woman, you are set free from your ailment." When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God. But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured on the sabbath, kept saying to the crowd, "There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured, and not on the sabbath day." But the Lord answered him and said, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to give it water? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the sabbath day?" When he said this, all his opponents were put to shame; and the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things that he was doing. Reader: People:
Here ends the Lesson. Thanks be to God.

Sermon
Darrell Cousino, Trinity Member
Apostle’s Creed (Please stand as you are able.)
Enriching Our Worship p. 41
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer Celebrant:
(The New Zealand Prayer Book, from the Anglican Church in Aotearoa)
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say:
Eternal Spirit, Earth-maker, Pain-bearer, Life-giver, Source of all that is and that shall be, Father and Mother of us all, Loving God, in whom is heaven: The hallowing of your name echo through the universe! The way of your justice be followed by the peoples of the world! Your heavenly will be done by all created beings! Your commonwealth of peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth. With the bread we need for today, feed us. In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us. In times of temptation and testing, strengthen us. From trials too great to endure, spare us. From the grip of all that is evil, free us. For you reign in the glory of the power that is love, now and forever. Amen. 7

The General THANKSGIVING Officiant: People:
The Book of Common Prayer pg. 101
Let us pray together the General Thanksgiving. Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.

Trinity Pages #LOVE IS THE WAY! Good morning and “welcome home” to Trinity! Whether you are new to our community or have found yourself coming back again and again, we want you to know you are both welcome and wanted here among us. For some, church is as comfortable and familiar as a good pair of jeans, or like coming back to your childhood home (if it is one filled with good memories). For others, church might be like visiting a foreign country where you experience unfamiliar language or customs. And then, sadly, for some church has become equated with feelings of hurt, rejection, or shame. We get all of that and believe that church can be different. We hold in real tension the beauty of our tradition with Jesus’ mandate to welcome all, no exceptions. And we get that if people are brave enough to walk through the doors of a big, Gothic-looking church in downtown Toledo, we’d better be serious about being progressive, inclusive and creative. We love our Episcopal tradition, but we love people from all walks of life even more. It is our hope and prayer that together we will navigate our way through each gathering, worship service, outreach activity, class, meal and social time with humility, grace and laughter. So thank you for being here today; for trusting the yearning that brought you through those ancient doors. May we all find our way into the heart of God’s love as we make room for each and all of us at the Table of love we set together week after week. And may you never forget you are loved,
