Come, Great Spirit!

Voice over by Chelsie Cree (written by Chris Neufeld-erdman, The Work of The People)

Celebrant: People:

Celebrant:

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.

Holy Spirit, Presence of God Holy Breath Life Divine! Holy Wind Mover and Shaker! We throw open our hearts before you; We cast down every barrier to your freedom: We yield to your boundless nature; we welcome your wildness. Too long have we tried to tame the wind; too long have we sought to control what’s wild; too long have we stood in domination over the Earth.

At this moment of Earth’s great groaning, yearning, as if in labor, to birth what’s holy and enduring, come, breathe, blow, move upon us all – that Earth and all that’s in it may thrive; that Earth and all that’s in it may love; that Earth and all that’s in it may live. In the harmony and wholeness you desire for us and all creation! Come great spirit! Breath, blow. Move upon us! Here! Now! Come, great spirit! Here now! May it be so! 2

FIRST Reading Reader:

Jeremiah 15: 15-21 Read by Nick Zurawski

A reading from Jeremiah

O Lord, you know; remember me and visit me, and bring down retribution for me on my persecutors. In your forbearance do not take me away; know that on your account I suffer insult. Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart; for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts. I did not sit in the company of merrymakers, nor did I rejoice; under the weight of your hand I sat alone, for you had filled me with indignation. Why is my pain unceasing, my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? Truly, you are to me like a deceitful brook, like waters that fail. Therefore, thus says the Lord: If you turn back, I will take you back, and you shall stand before me. If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless, you shall serve as my mouth. It is they who will turn to you, not you who will turn to them. And I will make you to this people a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you, but they shall not prevail over you, for I am with you to save you and deliver you, says the Lord. I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless.

O give thanks to the Be- / loved, And open your hearts to / Love. Awaken! Listen in silence for the Voice of the / Counselor. Sing praises with a glad heart and give witness to the truth with your / lives! Glory in the radiance of the Be- / loved; let the hearts of those who call upon You re- / joice! Gentle us, O Compassionate One, that we tread the earth lightly and with / grace, Spreading peace, goodness, and love, without harm to any / creature. For in gentle serenity is strength and as- / surance; confusion and suspicion find no home / here. Refrain

SECOND READING Reader:

Romans 12: 9-21 Read by Heather Meyer

A reading from Romans

Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” No, “if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Lord, Let My Heart be Good Soil

Handt Hanson

(Offered by Chelsie Cree, Kim Buehler & Lisa Tucker-Gray, Jobst Choral Scholars)

Lord, let my heart be good soil, open to the seed of your Word. Lord, let my heart be good soil, where love can grow and peace is understood. When my heart is hard, break the stone away. When my heart is cold, warm it with the day. When my heart is lost, lead me on your way. Lord, let my heart, Lord, let my heart, Lord, let my heart be good soil. 4

THE GOSPEL Celebrant: People:

Matthew 16:21-28 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you.” But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.” Then Jesus told his disciples, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life? “For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay everyone for what has been done. Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

Amy Saylor, Trinity Member

An Affirmation of Faith

Led by Nate Leonard From Shore to Shore

Please join the leader in sharing the words of this Affirmation of Faith We believe in God, the creator of all life and beauty, who blesses our journey. We believe in Jesus Christ, who lived as a friend and savior to all he met as he traveled, And who ate and laughed, wept and celebrated with them in love. We believe in the Holy Spirit, who rides on the gentle breeze, who strengthens our bindings, and who offers hope eternal. We believe in the church, Which stands open to all travelers, And bears witness to the everlasting love of God. Amen.

Prayers of the People & Confession of Sin

Led by Lynzi Miller from the Iona Community

Please join the leader in sharing the responses in bold. Let us pray. Gracious God, early in the morning, when the world was young, you made life in all its beauty and terror, you gave birth to all that we know. ALL: Hallowed be your name.

One:

One:

Early in the morning, when the world least expected it, a newborn child crying in a cradle announced that you had come among us, that you were one of us. ALL: Hallowed be your name. One:

Early in the morning, surrounded by respectable liars, religious leaders, anxious and silent friends, you accepted the penalty for doing good, for being God: you shouldered and suffered the cross. ALL: Hallowed be your name. One:

Early in the morning, a voice in a guarded graveyard and footsteps in the dew proved that you had risen, that you had come back to those and for those who had forgotten, denied and destroyed you. ALL: Hallowed be your name. One:

Early in the morning, in the multicolored company of your Church on earth and in heaven we celebrate your creation, your life, your death and resurrection, your interest in us: So to you we pray‌

ALL: God, bring new life where we are worn and tired, new love where we have turned hard-hearted, forgiveness where we feel hurt and where we have been wounded, and the joy and freedom in your Holy Spirit where we are the prisoners of ourselves. (pause for silence) One:

To all and to each where regret is real, God pronounces pardon and grants us the right to begin again. ALL: Thanks be to God. AMEN.

The Peace Celebrant: People:

The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. 6

Lord’s Prayer The congregation is invited to join.

Led by Ray Levey

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever. Amen.

Blessing

May the rain fall off your shoulders when you’re caught in a storm. When the frost comes a callin’ may it find you safe and warm. May your place be set, and may your promises be kept. And may you never forget that you are loved.

Sending Hymn

My Lord and I (Nate Leonard, Director of Music & the Arts)

We're gonna' walk this road to glory, My Lord and I; We're gonna' walk and tell the story, My Lord and I; When I come to the river, wide, The blessed Lord is gonna' calm the tide, We're gonna' walk this road to glory, My Lord and I (Repeat) We're gonna' walk this road to glory, My Lord and I; We're gonna' walk and tell the story, My Lord and I; Rain or shine, snow or sleet, Blessed Lord, guide my feet; We're gonna' walk this road to glory, My Lord and I Such is my consolation; Burdens out of the way. The Holy Spirit guides me As I travel day by day!. I just pull into the station And I get a full Supply! We're gonna' walk this road to Glory, My Lord and I We're gonna' walk and talk all the way to Glory, Gonna Walk and tell the blessed old story, Walk and talk all the way to Glory, My Lord and I! When I come to the river, wide, The blessed Lord is gonna' calm the tide. We're gonna' walk this road to Glory, My Lord and I! (Repeat)
