God Bless the Child (Lisa Tucker-Gray and Grace Mauk)

Welcome

Opening Hymn

God of Mercy, You Have Shown Us

Carolyn Winfrey Gillette

A Hymn Lamenting Gun Violence sung to : BEACH SPRING

God of mercy, you have shown us ways of living that are good: "Work for justice, treasure kindness, humbly journey with the Lord." Yet your people here are grieving, hurt by weapons that destroy. Help us turn to you, believing in your way that brings us joy. On a street where neighbors gather, shots are heard; a young girl dies. On a campus, students scatter as the violence claims more lives. In a family filled with anger, tempers flare and shots resound. God of love, we weep and wonder at the violence all around. God, we pray for those who suffer when this world seems so unfair; May your church be quick to offer loving comfort, gentle care. And we pray: Amid the violence, may we speak your truth, O Lord! Give us strength to break the silence, saying, "This can be no more!" God, renew our faith and vision; make us those who boldly lead! May we work for just decisions that bring true security. Help us change this violent culture based on idols, built on fear. Help us build a peaceful future with your world of people here.

The FIRST READING Reader:

Acts 1:1-11

A reading from the book of Acts.

In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the beginning until the day when he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. "This," he said, "is what you have heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?" He replied, "It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven."

The SECOND READING Reader:

Ephesians 1:15-23

A reading from the Ephesians.

I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

The Gospel Deacon: People:

Luke 24:44-53 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said to his disciples, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you-- that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled." Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; and they were continually in the temple blessing God.

Priest: People: Priest: People:

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. 7

We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer. At the following words, the Priest touches the water. Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

THE BAPTISM Book of Common Prayer #307 Each family and Godparents/Sponsors come individually to the font, presenting the candidate. The candidate is presented to the Priest who pours water on the candidate saying: Archer/Silma, I baptize you in the Name of the Creator, Redeemer & Sustainer Amen. The Priest marks the forehead of the candidate with the sign of the cross using chrism oil saying: Archer/Silma you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ’s own forever. Amen. A baptism candle is then lit from the Paschal candle and handed to the Godparents. Archer/Silma, receive the light of Christ. Amen.

Priest: Let us pray. Gracious God, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon Archer and Silma the gift of eternal love and have raised them to a new life of grace. Sustain them, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give them inquiring minds and discerning hearts, the courage to will and to persevere, spirits to know and love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. Once the candidate has received the sacrament of baptism he is welcomed. Priest: Let us welcome the newly baptized.

The Liturgy of the Table The Great Thanksgiving Celebrant: All: Celebrant: All: Celebrant: All:

A Wee Worship Book, Iona Community

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.

We praise you, O God, whom eternity cannot contain, for coming to earth and entering time in Jesus. We praise you for his life which informs our living, for his compassion which changes our hearts, for his clear speaking which contradicts our harmless generalities, for his disturbing presence, his innocent suffering, his fearless dying, his rising to life breathing forgiveness and restoring us forever to you. For these gifts we praise and worship you. All that is spectacular, all that is plain have their origin in you. All that is lovely, all who are loving, point to you as their fulfillment. Therefore we gladly join our voices to the song of the Church on earth and in heaven:

Sanctus

Grayson Warren Brown Holy Holy, Holy Holy, Holy Lord God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory; Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is They who comes in the name of the Lord, in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest!

Jesus was always the guest. In the homes of Peter and Jairus, Martha and Mary, Joanna and Susanna, he was always the guest. At the meal tables of the wealthy where he pled the case of the poor, he was always the guest. Upsetting polite company, befriending isolated people, welcoming the stranger, he was always the guest. 9

But here, at this table, he is the host. Those who wish to serve him must first be served by him. Those who want to follow him must first be fed by him. For this is the table where God intends us to be nourished. This is the time when Christ can make us new. So come, you who hunger and thirst for a deeper faith, for a better life, for a fairer world. Jesus Christ, who has sat at our tables, now invites us to be his guests. On their last night together, and as they were sitting at a meal, Jesus gave thanks, took a piece of bread and broke it. He gave it to the disciples saying, “This is my body. It is broken for you. Do this to remember me.” Later, after they had eaten, he took a cup of wine, gave thanks and said, “This cup is the new relationship with God made possible because of my death. Drink this all of you, to remember me.” So now we do as Jesus did. We offer this bread and this wine to each other, and proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We ask that these signs of your love be filled with the fullness of Jesus. Let that same love rest on us, converting us from the patterns of this passing world, until we conform to the shape of him whose food we now share. Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray

New Zealand Prayerbook

Eternal Spirit, Earth-maker, Pain-bearer, Life-giver, Source of all that is and that shall be, Father and Mother of us all, Loving God, in whom is heaven: The hallowing of your name echo through the universe! The way of your justice be followed by the peoples of the world! Your heavenly will be done by all created beings! Your commonwealth of peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth. With the bread we need for today, feed us. In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us. In times of temptation and test, strengthen us. From trials too great to endure, spare us. From the grip of all that is evil, free us. For you reign in the glory of the power that is love, now and forever. Amen.
