Welcome to Trinity Episcopal Church Good morning and “welcome home” to Trinity! Whether you are new to our community or have found yourself coming back again and again, we want you to know you are both welcome and wanted here among us. For some, church is as comfortable and familiar as a good pair of jeans, or like coming back to your childhood home (if it is one filled with good memories). For others, church might be like visiting a foreign country where you experience unfamiliar language or customs. And then, sadly, for some, church has become equated with feelings of hurt, shame or rejection. We get all of that and believe church can be different. We are a diverse community of seekers, believers, and doubters held together by the hope that together we are better, kinder, and more courageous when we stand side by side and face into the challenges of our lives and in the world together. We challenge the practices of our tradition that have at times kept others out and instead embrace Jesus’ mandate to welcome all, no exceptions, as a core value. And, we get that if people are brave enough to either walk through the doors of a big gothic-looking church in downtown Toledo, or tune in to Trinity@Home on line, we better be serious about being explicitly progressive, inclusive and creative in all we say and do. We love our Episcopal tradition, AND we love people from all walks of life even more! It is our hope and prayer that together we will navigate our way through each gathering, worship service, opportunity to serve, class, meal and social time together with humility, grace and laughter all infused with radical hospitality. So thank you for being here today; for trusting the yearning that brought you through those ancient doors. May we all find our way into the heart of God’s love as we make room for each other in this community and this world- we believe we are better and love more when diversity is celebrated and the bounds of God’s love are stretched wide. This bulletin is a guide to accompany you through the “liturgy”- meaning the “work of the people”- which is how our tradition approaches worship. It does indeed take a village bringing all of its gifts together to create our expression of gratitude and devotion week after week. Here is a quick little guide to help you follow along as we worship together: • • •

Blessed is the source of Love yearning for our healing and wholeness. God’s love endures forever.

Confession & Absolution

(from The Road We Make by Walking, Brian McLaren)

Priest:

Let us confess our sin against God and our neighbor.

People:

Gracious God, we have hurt each other, and we have been hurt. We have presumed upon others, and we have been presumed upon. We have taken others for granted, and we have been taken for granted. We have dishonored others, and we have been dishonored. As we receive forgiveness today for our wrongs may we also extend forgiveness to others who have wronged us. Have mercy upon us all. Amen.

Priest:

To all and to each where regret is real, The God of Love pronounces pardon and grants us all the right to begin again. Amen.

Kyrie

We Will Make No Peace with Oppression (Trinity Singers)

Latifah Alattas, Liz Vice, & Paul Zach

We will make no peace, no peace, no peace with oppression. We will make no peace, no peace. We will make no peace, no peace, no peace with oppression. Those who live by the sword will die by the sword. We will stand against violence of every form. We will march in the streets, “No justice, no peace!,” Arm in arm with our neighbor til we all stand free. Almighty God, help us not to be afraid. Almighty, give us Your strength. 3

(Cont.)

We will make no peace, no peace, no peace with oppression. We will make no peace, no peace. We will make no peace, no peace, no peace with oppression. We won’t turn away from pain of our brothers, cries of our sisters, grieving of our mothers. We won’t turn away from destructive politicians, Overflowing prisons, corruption in our systems. Almighty God, help us not to be afraid. Almighty, give us Your strength. Almighty God, help us not to be afraid. Almighty, give us Your strength. Almighty God, help us not to be afraid. Almighty, give us Your strength. Amen.

Collect of the Day Leader: People: Leader:

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.

Psalm

Psalm 32 From Psalms for Praying A single voice will chant the first half of each verse, and the congregation is invited to join in chanting the second half in bold.

Blessed are you whose wrongdoings have been forgiven, whose shame has been forgotten. Blessed are you in whom Love Divine finds a home, and whose spirit radiates truth. When I acknowledged not my shortcomings, I became ill through all my defenses. And day and night, guilt weighed heavy constricting my heart; My spirit became dry as desert bones. I admitted my faults to the Most High, and I made known my regret; I cried out, “Forgive me, O Comforter, for those times I have sinned in my thoughts, my words, and my deeds;” And the Beloved created within me a clean and open heart. 4

Therefore, let everyone who is sincere give thanks to the Beloved; For whenever we feel paralyzed by fear we shall be embraced by Love. Dwelling in the Heart of the Beloved, we are free from distress, free to live more creatively. O my Beloved, You are my guide, You teach me to walk in the Light. Be watchful of me, counsel me as I listen to You in the Silence. I pray for the gifts of inner peace and wisdom, For the grace to reverence all of Creation.

The Lesson Reader:

2 Corinthians 5:16-21 A reading from Second Corinthians.

Read by Deb Joseph

From now on, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

THE GOSPEL Deacon: People:

Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

All the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to Jesus. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, "This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them." (Cont.) 5

So Jesus told them this parable: "There was a man who had two sons. The younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that will belong to me.' So he divided his property between them. A few days later the younger son gathered all he had and traveled to a distant country, and there he squandered his property in dissolute living. When he had spent everything, a severe famine took place throughout that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed the pigs. He would gladly have filled himself with the pods that the pigs were eating; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, 'How many of my father's hired hands have bread enough and to spare, but here I am dying of hunger! I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired hands."' So he set off and went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him. Then the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his slaves, 'Quickly, bring out a robe--the best one--and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!' And they began to celebrate. "Now his elder son was in the field; and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing. He called one of the slaves and asked what was going on. He replied, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has got him back safe and sound.' Then he became angry and refused to go in. His father came out and began to plead with him. But he answered his father, 'Listen! For all these years I have been working like a slave for you, and I have never disobeyed your command; yet you have never given me even a young goat so that I might celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours came back, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fatted calf for him!' Then the father said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found.'"

Lord’s Prayer

Traditional, spoken Led by Ray Levey

The congregation is invited to join. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Blessing May our mouths speak of God’s goodness. May our arms hold those in need. May our feet walk towards justice. May our hearts trust their worth. May our souls dance in God’s grace. And may this be our rhythm—again and again and again, as we journey through Lent. May the rain fall off your shoulders when you’re caught in a storm. When the frost comes a callin’ may it find you safe and warm. May your place be set, and may your promises be kept. And may you never forget that you are loved.
