Palm/Passion Sunday: A Service of Commitment From The Cross in the Marketplace, by Dave Broom, Iona books, 2014 Palm Sunday, the first day of Holy Week, has traditionally been the day when, following a procession into the church, the whole Passion story is read out loud. Frequently this takes the form of a dramatic reading, with members of the congregation playing the roles of the different characters in the story and the whole congregation invited to play the part of the crowd shouting “Crucify him” at the point where Pontius Pilate asks them what he should do with Jesus. I have always found this disquieting. Why would I want to shout, ‘crucify him’? I wouldn’t want to shout it at a prisoner on death row today. It is not certain anyway that those who shouted this were the same people who had praised Jesus as he entered Jerusalem. Various commentators have suggested that it was more likely a ‘rent-a-mob’ gathered by the Sanhedrin and the religious authorities who wanted to get Jesus out of the way. Secondly, it has always seemed to me that Palm Sunday is the wrong day for the whole reading of the Passion narrative. Palm Sunday is the day of triumph, the day of declaration: the day when Jesus self-consciously demonstrates what his claim to messiahship really means and what his Kingdom is really about. As Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan point out in their book, The Last Week (Harper Collins), at the same time as Jesus was entering from one side of Jerusalem on a lowly colt, with palm leaves spread out before him, Pilate was entering from another in powerful authority, surrounded by legions of crack Roman troops. Today we commit ourselves to the values of the upside-down Kingdom of the unlikely Messiah Jesus. Jesus who stands today in the heart of the military-industrial complex and declares: ‘Peace.’

O Blessed Christ-Sophia (Trinity Singers)
Jann Aldredge-Clanton To the tune of “All Glory Laud & Honor”
O blessed Christ-Sophia, to you we lift our praise; In grateful adoration, our voices now we raise. Too long your name and image we’ve hidden from our eyes; Too long your words of wisdom, rejected and despised. You enter humble settings and grace communities; Receive a royal welcome from everyone who sees. O blessed Christ-Sophia, you come in every age, Unsettling priest and prophet, surprising wisest sage. Now make triumphal entry into our minds and souls; O blessed Christ-Sophia, inspire our dreams and goals. O may we catch your vision of partnership and peace, Transforming all our labor, our talents to release. Most Holy Christ-Sophia, O wise and blessed one, To you we sing hosanas; your victory is won. The palm trees wave their branches to celebrate your reign; We dance in expectation of wholeness to regain.
Call to Worship
Led by Karen & Lucya Keune We gather to remember and to worship the Christ of God. You who comes humble among us, we praise your name. You who rides on a donkey like a prince of peace, we greet you with palms. You whom the crowds welcome with loud cheers, we shout “Alleluia!” You who brings with you those we’d rather ignore; we often deny we know you. You who calls us to love regardless of the risk, too frequently we betray you. You who demands that we change our ways, our joyous welcome easily turns to shouts of “Crucify!” You who reveals who we are, we pray your grace to shape what will be. Make us yours that we may love like you and shout your praise: Alleluia! Alleluia!
The GOSPEL Deacon:
Luke 19:28-40 A reading from the Gospel of Luke.
After telling a parable to the crowd at Jericho, Jesus went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, saying, "Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' just say this, 'The Lord needs it.'" So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. 3
As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?" They said, "The Lord needs it." Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, saying, "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!" Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, order your disciples to stop." He answered, "I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out."

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.
Priest:
It is right and good to praise you, O God, to praise you always. This day we remember that Jesus entered into Jerusalem. He was greeted by those who spread palm branches and cloaks along the way. They honored him as the Chosen One crying, “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!” May the palms we raise today be signs that we welcome your Christ. May our lives be shaped by Christ’s way of love. Amen.

REFRAIN
REFRAIN Be a comfort to me, Beloved, for I am in distress; my eyes are dim from weeping, my soul is deep with grief. For my life is worn away with sorrow, and my years with sighing; My body has weakened and my bones waste away with misery. All my fears rise up to mock me, my neighbors turn away, My friends dread to see me and flee from my sickness of soul. My mind, too, has left me like one who is dead; I have become like a broken vessel. REFRAIN
Yes, I hear the voices around me whispering of my plight – fears rise up on every side! Isolation, rejection, fear surround me and conspire to overwhelm me. Still, I trust in You, O Beloved, I repeat, “You are my Life.” My life is in your hands; deliver me from the fears which separate me! Let your face shine on me; hold me in your steadfast love! REFRAIN
A READING Reader:
PHILIPPIANS 2:5-11 A reading from Philippians.
Read by Gary Franklin
Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Led by Joan Fothergill We believe in God, the creator of all life and beauty, who blesses our journey. We believe in Jesus Christ, who lived as a friend and savior to all he met as he traveled, and who ate and laughed, wept and celebrated with them in love. We believe in the Holy Spirit, who rides on the gentle breeze, who strengthens our bindings, and who offers hope eternal. We believe in the church, which stands open to all travelers, and bears witness to the everlasting love of God. Amen.

Leader:
Let us confess our sins to God.
People:
Creator God, long-suffering, full of grace and truth, you create us from nothing and give us life abundant. You give us new life in the water of baptism. You never turn your face from us, nor cast us aside. We confess we have turned against you and against our neighbor, in thought, word and deed. We have wounded your love and marred your image in us. Restore us for the sake of your Son, and bring us to heavenly joy, in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lord’s PRAYER
Led by Michele Frasier Wing A version of the Lord’s Prayer by Roy Hoover and Stephen Patterson. Dear One, closer to us than our own hearts, farther from us than the most distant star, you are beyond naming. May your powerful presence become obvious not only in the undeniable glory of the sky, but also in the seemingly base and common processes of the earth. Give us what we need, day by day, to keep our body and soul together, because clever as you have made us, we still owe our existence to you. We recognize that to be reconciled with you, we must live peaceably and justly with other human beings, putting hate and bitterness behind us. We are torn between our faith in your goodness and our awareness of the evil in your creation, so deliver us from the temptation to despair. Yours alone is the universe and all its majesty and beauty. Good caring presence within us, around us, and above us, hold us in a sense of mystery and wonder. Let the fullness of your goodness be within us and around us. Let all the world know your ways of caring and generosity. May we find we have all we need to meet each day without undue anxiety. Please overlook our many stupidities— and please help us to release everyone from their stupidities. And, may we all know that we are accepted. Strengthen us that we will reach to be our best, always with the faith to rise above the ugly realities of our existence. We celebrate the gifts you have given us: the rich kingdom of life’s possibilities, and the power to do good, and the triumphs of good, and the moments when we have seen the glory and wonder of everything. You are life’s richness. You are life’s power. You are life’s ultimate meaning. Amen.
Blessing May the rain fall off your shoulders when you’re caught in a storm. When the frost comes a callin’ may it find you safe and warm. May your place be set, and may your promises be kept. And may you never forget that you are loved.
