Holy Eucharist: Rite II The Feast of Martin Luther King, Jr. (anticipated)
January 19, 2020
Breakfast 9:00am Eucharist 10:00am
Welcome to Trinity Episcopal Church Good morning and “welcome home” to Trinity! Whether you are new to our community or have found yourself coming back again and again, we want you to know you are both welcome and wanted here among us. For some, church is as comfortable and familiar as a good pair of jeans, or like coming back to your childhood home (if it is one filled with good memories). For others, church might be like visiting a foreign country where you experience unfamiliar language or customs. And then, sadly, for some, church has become equated with feelings of hurt, shame or rejection. We get all of that and believe church can be different. We are a diverse community of seekers, believers, and doubters held together by the hope that together we are better, kinder, and more courageous when we stand side by side and face into the challenges of our lives and in the world together. We challenge the practices of our tradition that have at times kept others out and instead embrace Jesus’ mandate to welcome all, no exceptions, as a core value. And, we get that if people are brave enough to walk through the doors of a big gothic-looking church in downtown Toledo we better be serious about being explicitly progressive, inclusive and creative in all we say and do. We love our Episcopal tradition, AND we love people from all walks of life even more! It is our hope and prayer that together we will navigate our way through each gathering, worship service, opportunity to serve, class, meal and social time together with humility, grace and laughter all infused with radical hospitality. So thank you for being here today; for trusting the yearning that brought you through those ancient doors. May we all find our way into the heart of God’s love as we make room for each other at the Table of love set for us week after week. Welcome Home! May you never forget you are loved, Lisa Tucker-Gray
Notes about Trinity at Epiphany SUNDAY, JANUARY 19, 2020
THE FEAST OF MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta. As the son and grandson of Baptist preachers, he was steeped in the Black Church tradition. In 1954, King became pastor of a church in Montgomery, Alabama. There, Black indignation at inhumane treatment on segregated buses culminated in December, 1955, in the arrest of Rosa Parks for refusing to give up her seat to a white man. King was catapulted into national prominence as the leader of the Montgomery bus boycott. He became increasingly the articulate prophet, who could not only rally the Black masses, but could also move the consciences of Whites. King founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to spearhead non-violent mass demonstrations against racism. King’s campaigns were instrumental to the passage of the Civil Rights Acts of 1964, 1965 and 1968. King then turned his attention to economic empowerment of the poor and opposition to the Vietnam War, contending that racism, poverty and militarism were interrelated. After preaching at Washington Cathedral on March 31, 1968, King went to Memphis in support of sanitation workers in their struggle for better wages. There, he proclaimed that he had been “to the mountain-top” and had seen “the Promised Land,” and that he knew that one day he and his people would be “free at last.” On the following day, April 4, he was cut down by an assassin’s bullet. Thank you, Martin Luther King, Jr., for speaking out against oppression and injustice. Our entire society has more hope and is better because of you. 2

WELCOME Collect of the Day Celebrant: People: Celebrant:
People:
(from Holy Women, Holy Men: Celebrating the Saints)
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Almighty God, by the hand of Moses your servant you led your people out of slavery, and made them free at last: Grant that your Church, following the example of your prophet Martin Luther King, may resist oppression in the name of your love, and may secure for all your children the blessed liberty of the Gospel of Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
(Please be seated for the Lessons.)
The First Lesson Reader:
Genesis 37: 17b-20
A reading from Genesis
Joseph went after his brothers, and found them at Dothan. They saw him from a distance, and before he came near to them, they conspired to kill him. They said to one another, “Here comes this dreamer. Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits; then we shall say that a wild animal has devoured him, and we shall see what will become of his dreams.”
Reader: People:
Psalm
Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People. Thanks be to God.
Psalm 77: 11-20
(From Psalms for Praying)
The Psalm will be chanted responsively by half verse. The cantor will begin, and the congregation will respond. TONE
I call to mind the closeness of / my Friend; Yes, I remember the joy of the Be- / loved's presence. I contemplate in the / Silence, recalling how you led me a- / long the Way; For your Way, O Beloved, is / holy there is no / other like You! You are the One who will bring us to / wholeness, you manifest your Love to all who / call upon You; With You the peoples are / redeemed, the nations / brought to peace.
4
When our fears sense You, O Be- / loved, when our doubts encounter your love, they are afraid / and tremble. Our eyes pour forth oceans of tears; our countenance grows / cloudy; we hide behind walls of / resistance. The power of your love seems too much / for us; your light unveils the secrets hidden / in our hearts; Can You wonder that we / tremble? Yet, You stand beside us as we walk / through our fears. The path to wholeness / is love, though our footsteps / are unsure. You send the Counselor as / a guide To lead us on the paths of peace, of / truth and love.
The second Lesson Reader:
Ephesians 6:10-20
A reading from Ephesians
Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints. Pray also for me, so that when I speak, a message may be given to me to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it boldly, as I must speak.

Somewhere Only We Know
Keane
I walked across an empty land I knew the pathway like the back of my hand I felt the earth beneath my feet Sat by the river, and it made me complete Oh, simple thing, where have you gone? I'm getting tired, I need something to rely on So tell me when, you’re gunna let me in I’m getting tired and I need somewhere to begin And if you have a minute, why don’t we go Talk about it somewhere we should all know This could be an end or a beginning So why don’t we go, Somewhere we should all know.
The Gospel
Luke 6:27-36
Celebrant: The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus said, “I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you. “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Affirmation of Faith
(From Liturgy for the Whole Church: Multigenerational Resources)
(Please stand as you are able.) We believe in God who said, “Let there be light,” and there was! With that light, God made the world and all people in whom, and through whom, the Light burns on, strong and true. We believe! We believe in Jesus, the true Light, who went down to darkness to overcome death, and rose again, to unveil our own brightness, in the victory of whose love a path shines home to God’s heart where all will live forever. We believe! We believe in the Spirit, blazing with hope, speaking the truth into every darkness, warming our lives with God’s gifts and call. We believe! We believe in the church, where God’s Light is praised, and from where we are sent to love and serve the world. We believe! We ask today that a gentle breath blow from above on the light that is in us, the light that is among us, and enflame us anew with the courage of love. Enflame us, O God! Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE (Please stand as you are able.)
Intercessor: Creator of All, you have promised to hear when we pray in the name of your Son. Therefore in confidence and trust we pray for the Church. God, enliven the Church for its mission: People: that we may be salt of the earth and light to the world.
Intercessor: Breathe fresh life into your people. People: Give us power to reveal Christ in word and action. Intercessor: Creator of all, lead us and every people into ways of justice and peace. People: That we may respect one another in freedom and truth. Intercessor: Awaken in us a sense of wonder for the earth and all that is in it. People: Teach us to care creatively for its resources. Intercessor: God of truth, inspire with your wisdom those whose decisions affect the lives of People:
others that all may act with integrity and courage.
Intercessor: Give grace to all whose lives are linked with ours. People: May we serve Christ in one another, and love as he loves us. Intercessor: We pray for those on our Trinity Prayer List (names to be offered) and those we now name silently or aloud. (Pause) God of hope, comfort and restore all who suffer in body, mind or spirit. People: May they know the power of your healing love.
Intercessor: Make us willing agents of your compassion. People: Strengthen us as we share in making people whole. Intercessor: Give comfort to those who mourn. People: Bring them peace in their time of loss. Intercessor: We praise you for all your saints who have entered your eternal glory. People: May their example inspire and encourage us. Celebrant: Lord, you have called us to serve you. People: Grant that we may walk in your presence: your love in our hearts, your truth in our minds, your strength in our wills; until, at the end of our journey, we know the joy of our homecoming and the welcome of your embrace, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE CONFESSION OF SIN & ABSOLUTION Celebrant:
(From Wonderings Through Life and Other Such Nonsense)
The prophet speaks of the coming light of God which calls all the people of the earth to come together in God’s realm of shalom. Let us confess the ways in which we have rejected God’s vision of wholeness.
Celebrant and People: God of light and darkness, we have seen the glimmer of your star-light beckoning to us, but we have turned away and followed other paths. We confess that we have not loved you with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind, and with all our strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. Forgive us, Holy One. Strengthen our faltering steps and guide us in your holy way of peace.
Celebrant: People:
Lift up your eyes and see the grace of God poured out into our lives. The light of God shines through the darkness. Our hearts rejoice for Christ is in our midst. Amen.
THE PEACE Celebrant: People:
The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

The Great Thanksgiving Celebrant: People: Celebrant: People: Celebrant: People:
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Celebrant: You have filled us and all creation with your blessing and fed us with your constant love; you have redeemed us in Jesus Christ and knit us into one body. Through your Spirit you replenish us and call us to fullness of life. Therefore, joining with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every generation, we lift our voices with all creation as we sing:
Sanctus
Holy, Holy, Holy

Ken Canedo
Celebrant continues: Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace. But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life. On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured our for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Celebrant and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
The Celebrant continues Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ’s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN.

The Lord’s Prayer Celebrant:
(The New Zealand Prayer Book, from the Anglican Church in Aotearoa)
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say:
Eternal Spirit, Earth-maker, Pain-bearer, Life-giver, Source of all that is and that shall be, Father and Mother of us all, Loving God, in whom is heaven: The hallowing of your name echo through the universe! The way of your justice be followed by the peoples of the world! Your heavenly will be done by all created beings! Your commonwealth of peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth. With the bread we need for today, feed us. In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us. In times of temptation and testing, strengthen us. From trials too great to endure, spare us. From the grip of all that is evil, free us. For you reign in the glory of the power that is love, now and forever. Amen.
