“GRANDE HAVE REAL’ TALENT” V

ashanie Artie Butkoon, who calls herself the Goddess of Chutney, says that she is a valiant patriotic artiste who flies the culture flag of Trinidad and Tobago the world over as a ubiquitous performer on the grandest stages year round. Artie by no means is a run of the mill chutney artiste. At age 27, she exemplifies a well-seasoned and prolific career. She went through years of stage and band performances and has a vast musical repertoire. Artie is the lead female singer for the Indosaf Melobugz Band under the musical direction of Rishi Mahatoo. The popular colloquial saying; “Grande have real' talent” is no understatement and Artie Butkoon is one of those many talented people who were born and bred in the culturally rich countryside of Sangre Grande. Artie says that it was singing that chose her. From the cherub age of 12, she sang frequently at the Sangre Grande Temple, rendering sweet melodious Bhajans and on occasions she will sing Indian film songs. Her family encouraged her to join local Indian bands from the area. At age sixteen, she joined the illustrious Niya Zamana Orchestra with whom she speedily developed her ability to perform live on stages very well. She was scouted heavily for her distinctive voice and stage presence. She valiantly moved on to sing with other big bands such as the Indi-Art Orchestra, JMC 3Veni, BMRZ and now with Indosaf Melobugz Band. She has been with the Melobugz for the last five years. Whilst her musical history may seem admirable in the eyes of some, it is imperative to mention that, besides performing locally and internationally, she also finds the time to operate her own beauty and cosmetology salon. That is right, hairdresser and cosmetologist Artie Butkoon is the owner of Artie's Beauty Salon in Sangre Grande. She started business three years. Vashanie, better known as Artie, says “That the balance between working and performing could be quite challenging and physically tiring but it's worth it. When I step on stage and everyone goes crazy with the hits I sing, endorphins run through me like an electric

shock.” Only five months ago Artie opened another store: Artie's Exclusive Clothing Boutique. Artie says that her vocabulary does not contain the word “stop”. She plans to achieve as much as she can once the Lord permits her. Her first name, Vashanie, was hardly used as her moniker: Artie. “Artie” was always on the tip of the tongues of her family members. “Artie” is Hindi for “ray of light” and is merely a synonym for all the great things she has achieved in her musical career thus far. Artie's first hit “Pusongie” will always remain special to her as it brought her forth into the chutney industry followed by her larger than life collaborative hit “Dekhta Hia Tu Kya” with soca artiste Zoelah. This collaboration helped to cement her presence on the chutney scene. Artie says that working with other artistes has helped her build respect for other musical genres. She is pleased that she had worked with the likes of Prophet Benjamin, Marlon Asher, Russell C. of Imij & Company and others. Artie recently released a groovy Soca song, featuring Soca Queen Buffy, entitled “Meh Property.” She is not afraid to dabble and experiment with her voice and try new genres of music. At Southex's Chutney Soca Monarch Competition 2012, her explosive performance of “Mousie Get Away” got her fifth place and the award for Best Outstanding Female Artiste. She was placed fifth also in the first ever Carnival Chutney Soca Monarch Competition which was put on by former San Fernando Mayor Ian Artherly at Skinner's Park, San Fernando. Artie was crowned the 103 FM Chutney Soca Road March 2012 champion. The first time she entered was 2008 with the song “Dulhan banie.” Last year, she performed “Down by the

River” with an amazing and flamboyant performance moving an energetic and overzealous crowd response. Her goal continues to be becoming the first female chutney soca monarch. Accomplishing such a feat is what propels her to execute her performance the best that she can. Artie gives high praises to her follow band members of the Indosaf Melobugz with healthy camaraderie that she thrives on when performing and rehearsing with them. They possess the ability to bring out the best musically in each other while they have much fun together when they perform with their dynamics. She also gives great dividends to her musical director, manager and producer: Rishi Mahato. She vociferously declares that Rishi Mahato is, “An exceptional musical genius.” Rishi Mahato was recently bestowed the Southex Limited award for Producer of The Year 2012. The entrepreneur, hair stylist and cosmetologist, Artie Butkoon, is set for some busy touring ahead as she gears up for Holland, Guyana, Toronto, Suriname, Miami and other countries. Her music continues to be quite popular locally and aboard and she intends to continue to push herself and her band until they accomplish that benchmark of recognition internationally for what they do. Artie intends to showcase herself as an exemplar for the Chutney Soca Monarch 2013, when she will stand before the thousands of fans to show them why she is the “The Goddess”. Artie also extends the most gracious salute of sincerest thanks to all her fans who consistently come to all her shows and request her music.

M

ichael Salloum, aka Soca Elvis was born in Woodbrook, Trinidad to Lebanese parents during the 1960’s. He grew up hanging around the pan yards and mas camps at a young age thereby developed a good appreciation for the culture of calypso, mas and steelpan. The Mighty Sparrow, the Mighty Shadow and Lord Kitchener were some of his favourites. After Michael finished high school at St. Mary’s College in Port-of-Spain, he left Trinidad in the 1980’s and went to a military air force academy in Florida.

He then moved on to singing Soca with the big band ‘Atlantik’. He toured the Caribbean, the United States and Japan before embarking on a solo career to be known as Soca Elvis. Soca Elvis began singing Chutney Soca in 2007. He said after he found Chutney he found his destiny. He recorded hits such as Drunkard, Rum Doh Bother Me, Why Ya Leave Meh, Help Meh and many more. Hunter Man Brings it L

alchan “Hunter” Babwah was born on January 31, 1973, in Uquire, Freeport, Trinidad. He lived his entire life, went to school and worked within the same district. The name Hunter comes from what he enjoyed doing in his spare time. During 1999-2000, Hunter took the biggest steps of his life’s journey by entering the chutney soca industry by joining south's super band Dil-e-Nadan. While he was with them he wrote the hit song: 40-22 in 2000. From that, he realized his calling was not only in singing but also writing songs. He went on to compose lyrics for himself for his fellow chutney singers. Between 2002-2003, he ventured into a new horizon with another big band, Karma. Then during 2006-2007 he joined forces with Big Rich of D' Pungalunks

With that move, Lalchan's career skyrocketed with songs such as: Rum in D Morning featuring Bunji Garlin, Bring It (2008), Jep Sting Naina with Ravi B and Kes (2008), Puncheon (2009), Tanty Man (2010), One Thirty with Drupatee Ramgoonai (2012), Block Meh (2011), Engine (2011) and D Goutie with Brian Mohan, Rick Ramoutar, Ravi B. and Big Rich (2012). The Hunter, who is a church going Christian, received awards for “Bring it” Most Exported Chutney Song, Most Internationally Performed Chutney Artiste and Coveted Song of the Year Title. He also received the award for Best Collaboration for “Jep Sting Naina”. erry West was born in south Trinidad, but spent most of his life in Brooklyn, New York. He attended primary school in New York, secondary school in Trinidad Belmont Boys Intermediate. He went to college in New York - New York City Technical College. Jerry returned to Trinidad in 2000 originally to pursue an active role in his family's business, Claims Adjusting Bureau Limited. Music, however, has always been in his blood, so pursuing a career as a DJ seemed to be a natural calling. Jerry became the resident DJ at Club Zen upon its opening in 2004. He is now a radio DJ and producer of his own EDM (electronic dance music) programs on Star 94.7 HD, a local radio station dedicated to pop, rock, alternative and dance music. Jerry has been a fan of dance music since the early 90's, and remains a follower of the international dance scene. Jerry West wants to be the person to help pioneer and expand the local EDM scene. He wants to put dance music on the map for Trinidad & Tobago, and by extension the Caribbean. “I would say that watching the older hip hop music videos was my inspiration for wanting to become a DJ. The DJs in those videos like Jazzy Jeff, Jam Master Jay, Eric B, etc, all looked like they were having so much fun doing what they enjoyed doing the most. Local DJs back in the 90's like Chinese Laundry, Teddy Mohammed, and Doctor Hyde were all inspirational to me as well. I decided to buy my own DJ set and I practiced mixing music until I became as good as my favorite Djs. I went to night clubs on a regular basis just to see and hear

for myself how the club DJs put their mixes together and I observed how the crowds reacted to their sessions. I paid attention to what the people liked and didn't like. I would advise up and coming DJs to do the same. Learn the business firsthand by going out and seeing for yourself how the best DJs in the country handle a party.” “Remember that your job one day will be to make a crowd all enjoy the music you have to offer them, so it's important to be versatile and creative. Don't show up to a gig and play the same songs that the DJ's before you played already. That's just repetitive and boring. People want to hear a variety of music when they come out to party, and not just the hits of the day. So its important that a DJ learns to be flexible when playing for a crowd. Mix it up and be unique. Mr. Chucky Wastes No Time in Making his Mark Everywhere B

orn Roderick Gordon, entertainer Mr. Chucky, is presently a third year student at the Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business. He is pursuing a Masters degree in Human Resource Management. He is due to graduate in the year 2011.

would rest satisfied with a good year’s work. Chucky, however, was just getting started. He displayed even more versatility with his role in the play “Dance Me Lover”. This performance once again placed the young entertainer at the heart of history making since this was the first ever command performance at the National Academy for the Performing Arts.

Chucky has been singing consistently for the past eight years. He is 24 years of age. He participated in a number of junior calypso competitions, including the National Calypso Monarch and NACC Pathfinders competition while at secondary school concluding his A’ Level study.

2010 proved to be another outstanding year for the young starlet as he once again ascended to the finals of both the National Calypso Monarch (Dimanche Gras) and the Groovy Soca Monarch with his popular song ‘Driffin’. He placed 5th in the latter, topping some of the more famed artistes in the industry.

In 2004, he placed 4th in the National Junior Calypso Monarch, won the pathfinders competition and a number of other smaller competitions. Also in that year, Chucky took part in the schools parang festival, where he won the Best Male Vocalist title. In 2005, he entered the senior calypso realm and succeeded in qualifying for the semi-finals of the National Calypso Monarch. In this same year, he was a Young King finalist, and won the Tunapuna and Laventille calypso monarchs. He, also, placed 4th in the Stars of Tomorrow competition and was a member of the Kaiso Karavan calypso tent. Chucky is heavily involved in culture. He took park in the Prime Minister’s Best Village Competition 2005 with the Barataria Community Council where he won the Best Male Vocalist title and the Best All-round Performer award in the folk theater category. He entered again the following year by joining the cast for the Malick Folk Performing Company in 2006. Their production was entitled ‘The Journey’. It is there where he blossomed into an all round performer and won the Best All-round Performer for the second consecutive year. Once again with Malick in the following year, Chucky was able to capture the Best Male Vocalist title for the second time in the play ‘Canboulay’, which was also featured Queen’s Hall in January of 2008. The company brought the Pearl Springer play to life for the second time in February of that year. Chucky gained some recognition in the theater fraternity for his performance as the lead character, Roi, the champion stick fighter. The calypso fraternity was also forced to take special notice of Chucky in 2006. He proved that he was here to stay, making history, by becoming the second youngest person, at the age of 19, to become a National Calypso Monarch finalist. He also placed 5th in the Young Kings competition, 4th in the Stars of Tomorrow competition, and won the Tunapuna Monarch for a second consecutive time. Chucky also made his first ever venture into the soca arena with his debut hit “See You,” which allowed him to place third in the International Groovy Monarch competition and gave him the opportunity to perform in a number of parties and fetes. As a result of such an outstanding season, Chucky was nominated as a best new male artist at the

Chucky International Soca Awards in New York. The young calypsonian, who has successfully bridged Soca and Calypso, captured the first runner up position in the 2007 International Groovy Soca Monarch competition after Bajan entertainer Biggie Irie, inadvertently becoming the 2007 T&T Groovy Soca Monarch with his hit song ‘Turn Around’. Apart from Chucky’s success in the Soca Monarch Competition that year, Chucky also managed to capture the Stars of Tomorrow title as well as become the 1st runner up in the Young Kings Competition. Chucky has no intention of being boxed in by names like calypsonian or soca artist or even best village actor, as he has continuously explored other ways to further establish himself as an versatile entertainer. Thus, he chose to further his involvement in the arts by joining the Creative Arts Centre in their feature cacique award winning 2008 production - ‘Bitter Cassava’. In 2008, Chucky accompanied the Carifesta contingent to Guyana as one of the lead characters (Bembeh) in the play Ogun Ayan. At Carifesta, Chucky represented his country as a solo artist as well by performing on various stages in Guyana. Once again showing what a versatile artist and entertainer he is, Chucky fully embraced the Pan Soca/ Calypso arena with the hit “Thunder Coming”. This song dominated the Panorama and was voted as the Pan Song of the year 2008. In 2009, Chucky celebrated another successful carnival season by proceeding to the National Calypso Monarch Semi-Final with the composition “Mud Glorious Mud”. In this same year yet another milestone in Chucky’s career was his addition to the cast of Tuco’s flagship tent, The Kaiso House. Added to that,a fourth consecutive trip to the Semis of the Groovy Soca Monarch with the track titled “First Wine” and a number of victories at smaller competitions and most

Chucky continues to be heavily involved in all areas and levels of local entertainment in T&T culture with high quality contributions across the board. It is no wonder then that Chucky is being touted as a future stalwart and icon in this nation’s culture. In the year 2011 Chucky was back with the flagship tent Kaiso House and placed 5th in the International Groovy Soca Monarch with his hit song ‘My Bad Ting’ which happened to be one of the most well received songs of the year.

oursop has creamy, custardy flesh and a potent flavor that's reminiscent of pineapple and vanilla a combination that makes it a splendid substitute for the piña in a colada. Fresh soursop can sometimes be found in any Markets or try the frozen pulp sold in grocery stores.

Ingredients 1 cup soursop juice (See tips below for making juice below) 1/2 cup dark rum 3 tablespoons cream of coconut Dash Angostura bitters Pinch grated Nutmeg

Directions 1. In a blender, combine juice, rum and cream of coconut with ice. Whirl until thick and well blended. 2. TIP: To make juice from a fresh soursop: When the soursop is ripesoft to the touch cut in half, scrape pulp from the skin with a knife, and put pulp and seeds into a bowl. Add 3 cups water (for a 2- to 2 ½ -lb/1 soursop) and stir for about 3 minutes with a fork, until the liquid becomes thick. Allow to stand for about 10 minutes and then stir again. Strain,

f all the career choices in the world, Kess says he chose to be a magician because he always used to like shows that involved magic like Aladdin, Charmed and Genie. “I knew there was a reason why my eyes were always glued on the tv when these shows were on, that's when I knew I wanted to be a magician.” Kess has been doing Magic since the age of 10 years, He started doing only card illusions and as time went by I began doing various types of magic such as; animal magic, sleight of hand magic and various types of levitations. “I also perform grand Illusions from my Magic idols; David Copperfield, Chris Angel and Rick Thomas. I recently had a TV Show on Synergy Tv.” March 25th 2012 marked 2 years since Kess been doing magic as a profession. he band has been in existence for the past five years, under previous management and functioned as an East Indian band Autorama Stars. However, during the past couple of years the music has evolved and so too has this band. The band now claims to be one of the newest and most enthusiastic cross-over band in the industry. All members are experienced with performing in shows and events big and small locally, regionally and internationally. But we want to reach out to the wider public who has a great appreciation for all genres of music ( i.e. Soca, Chutney & Film, R&B, Reggae, Rock, Dance, etc). “You name it we play it” are the words of the Manager Timothy Rampersad. “The unit is fairly young contributing to dynamic and energetic vocals and music. This year Autorama Desi Krew Int'l is

scheduled to travel to South Africa to perform in various shows. There is no question of the capabilities of this band and its members. The members are as follows Manager/vocalist Timothy Rampersad aka T-RAM, Leader/Vocalist Savitri Rampersad, Rakesh Yankaran, Rohini Rampersad, Indrani Ali, Kevin Williams and Dhanraj Rampersad. 5th Forum on Classical Singing Concern Citizens of Local Singers Calling all Classical Singers, Drummers, Dhantaalist and Lovers of Local Classical Singing to an Open Forum on Local Classical Singing at the residence of Mr. Narine Bachan, Bachan Avenue, Foress Park, Claxton Bay on Sunday 3rd June 2012 at 2:00 pm. This is the 5th open forum in a series of meetings throughout the country. Come and make your contribution with ideas, suggestions and ways in the preservation and propagation of our Local Classical Singing Art form. Come and support this project in the name of CULTURE. There will also be entertainment by Various Artistes. The more popular chutney many don’t know, is derived from classical singing. Many of our classical greats are no more with us and the art-form and current crop of singers are endangered species. Make a special effort to attend to keep our history and culture alive.

Cultural exchange with Guyana and Suriname, USA and Holland 8. Documentation -Bio-data of the Artistes and the History of Classical music. 9. Introduction of the song in English, the meaning before singing also the type of song e.g. Dhrupad, Thumree, Horee, Gazal etc. 10. All Concerns/ artistes must aim with one love for “Classical Singing” fighting back its rightful space e.g. Chutney & Soca Chutney. Let’s Work together to keep our history alive. If not us, who?
