Welcome!
Come out and discover Bellville ... you’ll be glad you did!
MEGAN KENDRICK Executive Director Bellville Chamber of CommerceThe Bellville Chamber of Commerce would like to welcome you to visit our quaint Texas town with a big Texas heart! We are centrally located and ideal for a quick getaway where you can leave the city behind. Nestled in between Houston, San Antonio, Austin and Bryan/College Station only a few hours away.
Bellville is rich in history and recently celebrated its 175th year in 2023. Bellville is the county seat of Austin County and was named for Thomas B. Bell one of Stephen F. Austins Old Three Hundred that came in 1822.
There are so many things to do in Bellville between the wonderful eateries, coffee houses, and pubs you can stroll and shop downtown. Walking distance from the square is the Austin County Jail Museum and the Phenix Knives blacksmith shop that was originally started in 1891. Bellville is also home to a castle built by one our very own, called Newman’s Castle.
On the first Saturday of the month you can find the town abuzz with not one market but two! There is a Market on the square that has many vendors selling wares from woodworking, clothes, candles, artwork, crochet works, and many other unique items. We also have one of the largest Farmers markets full of handmade and homegrown items. Fresh produce, soap, canned goods, fresh eggs, plants and handmade items not to be found elsewhere.
There are multiple annual events to come check out like our Chocolate Walk in February, Car Show in March, Forged in Fire in April, German Fest in April, County Fair in October and Small Town Christmas in December. Don’t put off your visit, as a matter of fact plan on coming back again and again! It’s really hard not to fall in love with this town! #DiscoverBellville

Austin County Jail Museum
ICONIC PART OF BELLVILLE’S HISTORIC PAST OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
The Historic Austin County Jail was built in 1896 at a cost of $19,970, and was a functioning jail until 1982.
Calling their old jail “unsafe, unfit, and inadequate,’’ the Austin County Court contracted in 1896 with Pauly Jail Building Co. of St. Louis to erect this structure at a cost of $19,970. Romanesque Revival style, with crenulated parapets, bartizans, and stone window arches harmonized with the 1886 courthouse, which later burned. The gallows, used only in 1901, have been removed; jailer’s quarters have been enlarged; but original exterior is preserved. It was a functioning jail along with being the sheriff and his family’s house until 1982. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1976
The Austin County Jail Museum is a local visitor attraction open Saturdays and manned by volunteers. If you are interested in hosting tours at the Jail Museum one Saturday per month, please contact Don Allphin at 979-877-5642 or Bruce Noviskie at 713-385-7141.
The exhibits are fun and educational and your time will be a gift to you and to our county.

His specialty is custom knives, and many years ago Cowboy decided to create a program called Texas Select from Forged in Fire. He told the city he wanted to create the event and next thing he knew he had 18 ‘smiths from five states who wanted to participate. “We thought it was just going to be Texas,” he laughed. “Next thing we know we had people coming in from Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Colorado, Oklahoma … these people are driving a long way to see Forged in Fire guys.”

Welcome to the BISD Learning Center
The mission of Bellville ISD is to partner with students, staff, parents, and community to cultivate relevant learning experiences so that each individual is empowered by their unique gifts and interests.
The Bellville ISD Learning Center was created to give students an opportunity to apply their learning and showcase their talents through real world connections with the Bellville community. BISD also aimed to create a space for community to gather, adding to the charm and attraction of our downtown square.
The building was originally built in 1909 as Austin County State Bank. Bellville ISD purchased the property in 2021. The funds to procure and renovate the building were generated through the sale of three properties the District had previously inherited. Design and renovations for the BISD Learning Center included creation of the Bellville
Community Museum to preserve historic components of the building including the original vault door and decorative ceiling tiles in addition to photos and artifacts showcasing the community’s unique history and economic development over time.
The BISD Learning Center is also home to select career and technical education programs for students in grades 6-12 including culinary arts, graphic design, entrepreneurship, and health science. At the BISD Learning Center, students also operate “Brahmas on the Square” which includes a student-run cafe and student-run store. Students from multiple programs including horticulture, floral design, construction, welding, art, graphic design, culinary arts, and entrepreneurship come together to create products featured throughout the building and sold through the cafe and store. The BISD Learning Center opened with students in the spring of 2023.
Bellville is an incredible community with an abundance of charm and character. “The Bellville Way” is one reflective of family, trust, and high expectations. BISD is proud to contribute to the continuation of traditions that make Bellville a great place to live and learn.
Residents and frequenters of Bellville will often see the celebration of our students’ accomplishments through the signs on the courthouse lawn and may be lucky enough to take part in our buses circling the square as we send off our talented students to regional, state, and national competitions.
Our BISD Brahma Family is blessed to be part of a community united in pride for our district and town. BISD invites local community members and visitors from near and far to experience our unique history and the warm embrace of our small town values and traditions by visiting the BISD Learning Center.
At the learning center, guests will find the walls filled with the history of our town and district captured through the
incredible talent of one of our student-artists and fabricated through collaboration with local vendors for signage and displays. Additionally, our rooms are filled with furniture pieces constructed by the talented students in our welding and construction programs.
Come explore the art gallery showcasing students’ creations, spend time exploring artifacts from our community’s unique history and learn things you might not have known before including BISD’s origin as the first public school district in Texas for unincorporated towns and cities, historic issues of The Bellville Times (one of the six longest standing newspapers in the state), insights into the history of Bellville becoming the county seat, and rumors of how the railway sparked one of the most well known rivalries in Texas.

The Austin County Fair
MARK YOUR CALENDARS - OCTOBER 4-13, 2024 WILL SHOWCASE ALL THE BEST OF BELLVILLE AND AUSTIN COUNTY
The Austin County Fair has seen generations of families pass through its gates over the past 97 years. Withstanding the test of time, the organization remains committed to the core values and ideals of the Bellville agricultural community while openly extending its outreach to as many in the area as possible. No matter if it is your very first visit or a yearly tradition, this homestretch to The Austin County Fair centennial promises to be just as thrilling as it has remained throughout its history.
A lot of time and volunteer effort go into planning this iconic nine-day event. Kim Quinney, the Austin County Fair manager, describes the amount of detail and care that each member of the team brings to this process. Starting right after the conclusion of the final night, the preparations for the next year begin. Usually a theme for the year (2024: Rock Around the Stock) is chosen early to entice the public,
and also allow time for parade participants to prepare their floats and other awarded categories. Involvement is the largest principle of the fair as a whole. And it is undeniable the impact this event has on the entire region. From schools shutting down, to families planning reunions on the grounds, to alumni groups hosting gatherings for anniversary class years, this is not your run of the mill carnival. This fair is a labor of love by all involved, one deeply driven to keep tradition and awareness of the agricultural community alive by bringing the community together in both celebration and fun.
Above, the parade is the kickoff to the fair weekend with many participants on homemade floats.
One way the Austin County Fair achieves this is by passing the torch to the younger generation. Through the highly anticipated 4H and FFA auctions held for youth participants, children can showcase livestock and other goods for sale. This alone has raised 2.7 million dollars in the past years, all of which goes back to the kids. Businesses and sponsors alike take great pride in being a part of this prestigious tradition. Scholarship money is awarded each year to participants in those organizations. Promising to help influence not only the participants, many resources are open to helping place kids in clubs and getting them involved in agriculture, home economics, or horticultural exhibitions.
But it’s the promise of a boot stompin’, familyfriendly event that draws the crowds. After taking a stroll through the barn to observe the animals, the sights and sounds of the carnival will draw festivalgoers in. Made possible by the nationally recognized Tally Amusements, guests can laugh the night away under the colorful flashing lights of various thrill rides and game booths. And what fair night wouldn’t be complete without the taste of funnel cake, cotton candy, and ice cream to round out the experience? While walking through the grounds, there are so many thrills to discover along the way.

“
It’s the promise of a boot stompin’, family-friendly event that draws the crowds.
“Outside of our auction, the most popular attractions are our rodeo and entertainment lineup,” shared Kim. Both of these events highlight and attract attention from all around the state. The Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association is the largest rodeo organization in the world. Their rodeo promises excitement like cowboys trying to hang on to buckin’ bulls, young’uns giving it their all in the mutton bustin’ competition and the ever-popular barrel racing challenge. For three nights, guests gather to applaud the talents of both human and animal athletes alike as they test their skills in ropin’, buckin’, and racin’. It is both thrilling and a nod again to the heritage of which the fair promises to continue.
As the sun sets, the main stage lights come on to get the party started. Festivalgoers knock the dust off their boots under the stage lights of both new and returning music acts.
“We try to find new acts that are traditional, classic, and upand-coming,” Kim continued. Several acts in the past have appeared on the lineup as a new group but then exploded in the charts, becoming household names. Recognizable acts, such as Brooks & Dunn and Garth Brooks, have taken center stage in past years. New lineups are held in secret until July. The excitement builds as each year promises to be more riproarin’ than the one before.
Words cannot describe the dedication and amount of attention the fair committee takes in planning every aspect of this entire event. Not only the work, but the care and true passion they have for making sure each event, no matter how small, is spotlighted. The Austin County Fair has carried on for almost a century and, God willin’ and the creek don’t rise, will continue to do so for the many years to come.
“I hope that our guests appreciate the history and what makes Austin County different,” Kim said. “I hope they have an interest in where their food comes from, and that they are proud of being in Austin County. I also hope everyone leaves with a sense of community – no matter how different we are or where we are from.”
The 2024 fair will run from October 4 through 13 and their concert lineup will be released on July 19. For the most up-to-date information on The Austin County Fair, visit austincountyfair.com or their Facebook page to stay informed on upcoming events. Their newsletter is sent out regularly and consists of not only event information, but also updates on happenings at the fairgrounds year-round.

Sartain’s Awesome Shoppe
THE INSPIRATIONAL JOURNEY OF SARTAIN’S AWESOME SHOPPE - FROM FOREST SURROUNDINGS TO COMMUNITY PILLARS: SEE HOW JASON AND KELLIE SARTAIN BUILT A WOODWORKING EMPIRE ROOTED IN CREATIVITY, CRAFTSMANSHIP, AND COMMUNITY
Passing through Bellville in the spring brings about all the natural beauty of this small, Texas town. Roads guided by vibrant bluebonnets and budding trees; this charming place beckons travelers to visit its downtown square. Amongst those roads stands one historic building dating back to the 1940s, where the scent of oak and pine dances in the crisp spring air—a place unlike any other: Sartain’s Awesome Shoppe. This is where craftsmanship, creativity, passion, and faith intertwine seamlessly, resonating in every stroke of the saw and hum of the lathe.
Enter the world of Jason and Kellie Sartain, a dynamic
husband-and-wife team whose devotion to woodworking is unparalleled. It is evident that they possess an unmatched skill for transforming each project into a unique piece that is built to stand the test of time. With boundless passion and unwavering dedication, they infuse every piece of wood with a distinct sense of artistry and craftsmanship.
Hailing from the sunny shores of California, Jason has embodied a lifelong pursuit of creativity and craftsmanship.
Above, relax inside as you look around the Sartain’s statement pieces and design elements.
From his early years, he harbored a curiosity about the inner workings of the physical world around him, constantly seeking out answers for how different things were made. Unable to afford the expensive furniture he admired, Jason took matters into his own hands and learned to craft his own pieces. Fueled by summers spent in the woods of Washington chopping down trees –Jason’s natural eye, as some would call it, began to explore the world around him. Being able to look at a slice of wood and see each unique coloration, line, irregularities (what some would call flaws) and how to play up each of those characteristics to make something one-of-a-kind.
In contrast, Kellie has been a proud resident of Bellville for most of her life, even though she is a “BOB - Born out of Bellville,” as she warmly jokes. This town quickly became her home. Amidst the hills and sprawling landscapes of the Lone Star State, she has always found creativity in the world around her. Kellie has a keen eye for detail and the natural ability to infuse each piece with a sense of elegance and grace. Her upbringing in Bellville instilled in her a deep appreciation for the beauty of simplicity, and her innate creativity shines through in every intricate design. This team brings their skills together for each customer with care and precision.

BY VICTORIA FREDERICKThe couple started out in an unairconditioned garage making small home decor pieces and signs to sell to farmers markets and auctions. Business quickly grew thanks to local word-ofmouth. Expansion was soon required and that’s when they stumbled upon their current establishment - a lonely metal building from the 1940s. It was certain to be a labor of love. With the help from their family, community and their faith in God – Jason and Kellie turned this establishment into what it is today.
The uniqueness of the building is only second in comparison to what happens inside each day. Unlike most custom wood shops, the Sartains have established a “mill to market process,” which means that every project starts and ends inside those walls. With the ability to source, mill, and treat each piece of wood that is needed for a project, each step in every piece passes through their hands.
Every customer meets with both Kellie and Jason for a “Dream Session,” where this duo brings to life a one-
of-a-kind creation that’s guaranteed to last a lifetime. Their ability to visualize each customer’s request from just words or pictures is unmatched. Carried from that general concept to the actual work of creation, the customer is involved every step of the way. Whether it is physically getting to mill the wood with Jason, or sitting with Kellie to paint and stain samples, the opportunity to work with them is anything but hands off.
Their dedication to their work is second to none, but what falls closely after is their impact and commitment to their community. The town of Bellville itself is surrounded by hints of the Sartain’s influence on it. Numerous storefronts proudly display their names above their entrances which have been made by Jason and Kellie. Even the “Welcome to Bellville” sign outside the downtown square was created by their hands. On extra specific projects, details cannot be made out of wood; this is when the Sartains call upon the work of local metal, glass, or other artisans to help complete a project. Beyond the front desk, the generosity

of this couple in helping community members in need shows just how close and dedicated they are to their value for everyone around them.
As their story continues to grow, so does the success of their business. Past projects include replicating a 100-year-old door, working with Redbull and Formula 1, and just this year creating a custom sushi bar for the Michelin star restaurant Sushi by Scratch. Always open to progress, Sartain’s Awesome Shoppe has taken its presence to a whole new level. Unparalleled in creativity, their work is quality, timeless, and unique, much like the couple that proudly owns this establishment.
For more information, visit awesomeshoppe.com to view their gallery of work and to schedule your own Dream Session. Jason and Kellie also welcome visitors to stop by their showroom at 757 West Main Street and look at the various ready-made items for purchase. Huff Brewing
IT’S A GATHERING PLACE WHERE GOOD TIMES AND GREAT BEER FLOW FREELY. JOIN US FOR A PINT, A WARM WELCOME, AND UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS
In words spoken by the Greek philosopher, Plato, “He was a wise man who invented beer.” While other accolades he brought to the history of the world are still recognized in the modern era, one could argue that this quote alone might hold the greatest influence. With an industry once dominated by commercially produced beer, none can dispute the rise of craft breweries that are sweeping the nation. It’s a force driven by individuals to push the limits on recipes, ingredients, and the overall art of brewing in general. One such place, Huff Brewing, has been in their new facility located on the downtown Bellville square since 2022. Run by husband-and-wife duo, Ryan and Christine Huff, this establishment is home to some solid beer, good company, and small-town influence that makes this a must stop venture when headed through town.
For some people, their path in life reveals its way over time. For Ryan however, the dream of owning a brewery revealed itself at a younger age than most. We all knew that one kid in high school that was able to bring a few beers to the party, but Ryan took that one step further and learned to make the beer himself. Soon realizing that the interest in different kinds of beer was growing, his curiosity and experimentation grew along with it. Over the years this curiosity increased and continued through college and into adulthood. It wasn’t until Ryan’s mom encouraged him to start a brewery that this spark lit the drive that still burns to this day.
But starting a beer business is hard. Ryan started in a small barn without air conditioning, heating, or other amenities on the outskirts of town. Soon people found their way to his doors and

kept returning. Recognizing the need for a more atmospheric establishment, the Huff’s brought their beer to its current location in 2022. Through a lot of effort and community support, the brewery stands out as a mix of classical design and comfortable interior.
What makes this establishment stand out the most is, of course, the beer. Brewed exclusively with well water, each of Huff’s craft beers has a unique and refreshing taste. New brews are driven by Ryan’s ideology of, “what type of beer he would like to try himself.” Many of their beers are a one-time brew, meaning that as soon as that keg kicks, it’s gone. This allows for various recipes to be tried throughout the year and gives customers a new flavor experience each time they come in.

The success of their new location has seen both regulars and new folks alike drawn to the bar inside … it’s a testament to how committed to the community this duo remains. Often partnering with a local food truck, Huff Brewing offers a delightful afternoon where people can take a break from shopping on the square to wind down. Everyone is welcome to their establishment, and the frequent events that are hosted there make that even more so. From bingo and trivia nights, to special brunches and holiday parties, even monthly live music – there is a little bit of fun for everyone each week. You’re invited to come in, sample some refreshing beer, and are guaranteed to have friendly conversations as long as you linger.
Huff Brewing is located right in the central part of Bellville at 11 East Main Street. They’re open Thursday to Sunday; hours vary by day. The best way to stay up-to-date on all the local events, as well as the food truck schedule, is by following them on Facebook.

RODEO HISTORY
Buck Fergeson Originals
WITH TRUE TEXAS FLAIR, AT BUCK FERGESON ORIGINALS THE RODEO LIFESTYLE AND FASHION HOLD A PROMINENT PLACE IN THIS FAMILY’S HISTORY
Life, like any good story, doesn’t have a wayward linear line to the end. It has many twists and turns to keep it interesting, something to always keep you guessing about what is next. When looking at someone and seeing where they are now, would you always be able to guess how they got there?
Buck Fergeson Originals is one such example. Known as the premier clothing and home décor store on the corner of Main and Holland Streets, they are known for carrying popular brands such as Johnny Was and Free People, along with upscale gifts. Many people know that the clothes inside those doors will make you rodeo ready, but the history itself is deeply rooted in the wild, wild west.
Displayed along the back wall is a tribute to the man that started it all, Cleveland Lee “Buck” Fergeson. Born into the true Texas lifestyle, he grew up following in his father’s footsteps as a rodeo cowboy. From a young age, he dazzled audiences riding trick horses and bucking bulls. And although he never was able to clinch a national championship in any event, he solidified his name in the Texas Cowboy Rodeo Hall of Fame in another way. Riding broncs was the center of his life, but his true hobby of drawing and creating art was all natural-born talent. Buck spent his free time sketching and although it was easy to see he had an obvious gift and passion, he never took an art class in his life.
Top left, one of the many custom signs that line the outside of the store to beckon customers inside; right, clothes of every shape, size, and color hang diligently and neatly; right, seasonal and new fashion displays showcase just some of the items available for sale.
Soon Buck traded his pencils for carving knives, and it wasn’t long before his true medium took way. Seeing how amazing his sculptures turned out, he turned from wood to wax and then eventually to bronze. Encouraged by his family and his tight connection to the rodeo community, Buck was given the opportunity to sculpt trophies, including champion bull rider, calf roper, steer wrestler, and barrel racer, for the world famous Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. For 17 years he applied his artistic talents, thus becoming a gold card member to the Pro-Rodeo Cowboys, along with the award of a lifetime membership to the rodeo.
Buck retired from trophy making, but it didn’t mean his artistic talents diminished. Continuing on to a new medium, he started to make gold and silver jewelry which he and his wife, JoAnn, would sell in their store. The store soon flourished and became a family effort. His daughter, Kerri, brought various other items to the store. Her eye for interior design added the finishing touches that made Buck Fergeson Originals a true shopping experience.
Continued on page 40.
Both women and children’s clothes are prominently displayed on one half of the store, showing off the latest trends and fashions. The other half displays the most unique home décor in the area. You can’t help but be motivated by the displays of things available for purchase. There is not an inch of space in their layout that doesn’t inspire a passion for originality.
Although Buck has since passed away, his inspiration lives on to this day at Buck Fergeson Originals. His family’s dedication continues to pay tribute to a great man that holds a place in Texas rodeo history. Carried on by his daughter and granddaughter, his legacy and love for artistic flair is proudly displayed from wall to wall. They continue to spread his love of God and community together with an amazing team of designers and staff … a true tribute to the rodeo lifestyle and fashion where its roots lie deepest.
Buck Fergeson Originals must be experienced in person at 4 South Holland. When not in Bellville, visit their website at www. buckfergesonoriginals.com.
Above, Buck Fergeson was given the opportunity to sculpt trophies, including champion bull rider, calf roper, steer wrestler, and barrel racer, for the world famous Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Left, displays throughout the shop each have their own theme and style.

Millheim Harmonie Verein Hall
The two acres Millheim Hall was built on in 1874 was purchased from Friedrick Engelking, Sr. and Heinrich Vornkahl. This hall served the community for elections, family gatherings, and various celebrations. The annual Father’s Day Barbecue, which is still held today, was begun in the first Harmonie Hall. In 1938 the hall was replaced with a new building on property donated by Otto and Dora Severin. Lumber from the old hall was incorporated into the build of the new hall. The first event in the new hall was a dance held on April 15, 1939.
As you can see, Millheim Hall has been a gathering place for more that 150 years. It’s a perfect place to gather with friends and family, host meetings and celebrate life’s occasions. What better way to celebrate your event than surrounded by history?
This historic hall provides the perfect canvas for your event from simple elegance to rustic charm. Seating is available for up to 300 guests. Hall ammenities include a stage, wooden dance floor, climate controlled environment, food preparation area with refrigerator, freezer, sink and a bar.

SEALY, located at the intersection of I-10 and Hwy 36 (just 48 miles west of Houston) in south central Austin County, was formed as a railroad town in 1879. Once part of the San Felipe de Austin Town Corporation land was sold to the railroad and named to honor George Sealy, a Galveston railroad director. Sealy became a commercial shipping center and many of the early residents were railroad employees. Visitors will want to browse through Sealy’s Historic Downtown Area with antique and gift shops, quaint restaurants, museums, some housed in historic buildings along with many shopping districts throughout the city are a great start to any weekend. Many historic period homes abound in and around town to add to your enjoyment. If you are one of those that live to eat true Texas style southern cuisine, Sealy boasts at least two legendary eateries Tony’s Family Restaurant serving locals and visitors since 1936 and Hinze’s Barbecue, voted one of the ten best in the state. You can pick from over 30 different food establishments, so Sealy does have something for just about everyone. There’s also a hoppin’ downtown district with a bookstore, cigar bar, coffee shop and unique restaurants. Visit www.visitbrenhamtexas.com for more information.

BROOKSHIRE - The City of Brookshire was incorporated in 1946. Before that time it had all of the characteristics of a very small town and farming community. Brookshire has a long history of farming and ranching. Flat land, productive soil and good rainfall make the area ideal for crops which need a lot of water. Plentiful grass and open land are ideal for the cattle industry. Agriculture was the major reason in the beginning for the existence of Brookshire. Agriculture storage silos still operate here, but not at their peak as they did in the years of the past. Visitors will want to include Hemi Hideout, Brookwood and Dewberry Farm on their list of must-see stops. Visit https://www.brookshiretx.gov for more information.
