First Baptist Church was started during a Sunday School movement soon after Texas won her independence from Mexico in 1836. Later, it was admitted into the Colorado Baptist Association in 1855. The “Concrete Church” was built in 1859 on the corner of Washington and Live Oak, including a bell tower housing a gifted iron bell. The church was the largest building in town and was shared by other denominations and various organizations in the community.

In 1909, a new church building was erected on Walnut and occupied in 1910. The bell was brought to its new home and was rung every evening during WWII to remind people to pray. In 1965, the church was moved to its present location, 1700 Milam. The beloved bell now has a special place on the church lawn.

Today, it is our desire to reach people for Christ and help them grow in their relationship with Him. We strive to accomplish this in several ways. We offer Sunday School classes for children and adults of all ages, ranging from babies to Senior Adults. Our children’s ministry includes programs such as AWANA and Sunday Night Kids. Our Youth programs include Devoted and Ignite. Vacation Bible School, along with Kids’ and Youth camps, are also offered during the summers. Our Adult ministry offers weekly bible studies, Men’s Prayer Breakfast, Ladies’ Prayer Meeting, Extra Special People, and Woman’s Missionary Union.

Our church also has service ministries where we reach out to others in need in our community such as the Clothes Closet and Men’s/Women’s Jail Ministry.
