Welcome!

Bluebonnets and Indian paintbrushes along the highways are always the first sign to me that springtime is here. For more than 90 years, the Texas Department of Transportation has worked to conserve and preserve the state’s wildflower species. Texas was among the first states to implement a program of planting wildflower seeds along the state’s rights of way.

MICHELLE BANSE STOKES Partner/Publisher

Claudia Alta “Lady Bird” Johnson, the First Lady of the US from 1963 to 1969, saw roadside restoration as an opportunity to bring ecological richness, plant and animal biodiversity, and regional identity to otherwise boring roads and highways. The Highway Beautification Act, her signature achievement toward this goal, laid the groundwork for roadside enhancement and conservation by creating healthy landscapes with native plants. We all have her to thank for the miles of color that we get to enjoy along our commutes. And, for me, those drives bring about memories of days gone by.

When I was a kid growing up in Colorado County, wildflowers were an integral part of my Easter fun. Grandpa Banse would take me out into the pasture to collect bluebonnets, pink evening primrose (I called them buttercups then because of their buttery yellow stamens) and red paintbrushes to make my own basket in hopes that the Easter bunny would pay me a visit. I intertwined the stems in a circle, creating a colorful pad to catch his eye. Easter morning I’d find my flowery basket magically filled with sweet goodies to enjoy. I’m grateful for all the hues of the season that brighten my drives to and from all the small towns in Texas, bringing back memories of yesterday and a deep appreciation for today. No matter how far I wander, I know the most beautiful wildflowers in Texas will welcome me back home to Colorado County again and again.

Welcome to Columbus, Texas … the halfway point while traveling between San Antonio and Houston or Austin and Houston. With so much going on during the spring and summer, Columbus is a good place to stop, get out and stretch your legs before continuing your travels. You can choose to visit for a day or an entire weekend. Columbus has lots to offer such as great dining, a local brewery, shopping, coffee shops, and beautiful bed and breakfasts for a relaxing night’s stay.

LORI OLIVAREZ-LIGUES Partner/Sales

Spring is also the time to get your gardens planted and your yard ready for relaxing nights outdoors. Columbus has a Farmers Market downtown on the square on the last Saturady of the month from March through November. There are numerous vendors with tempting wares that range from home décor to garden goodies. The market is also a great place to catch up with friends and family.

The big event of the spring here in Columbus is the Magnolia Days Festival. Always the third weekend in May, you’ll want to mark your calendar now to make sure you come on out. It’s a fun-filled weekend with live music, street dances and many vendors. This event promises not to disappoint. Make sure you check out the calendar of events on page 38 of this edition to see what other fun is happening in Columbus and the surrounding area during the spring and summer. I also encourage you to support all of the businesses that make this edition possible. You’ll find a directory of them on page 48.

STAFFORD OPERA HOUSE - When it was originally built in 1886 by cattleman R. E. Stafford, the R. E. Stafford Bank and Opera House housed a bank and dry goods store on the first floor and theater venue on the second floor. In 1972, the Magnolia Homes Tour, Inc. (now the Columbus Historical Preservation Trust, Inc.) bought the property for $30,000 and began restoration efforts. Eighteen years and $1.3 million later, the Stafford Opera House was lovingly restored to its former glory and rededicated in 1990. Tours of the 1886 Stafford Opera House may be arranged by contacting the Columbus Chamber of Commerce at 979732-8385. COLUMBUS GOLF COURSE - This simple nine-hole course features tree-lined fairways and water on seven holes, as well as the chance to spot the whitetail deer and ducks that frequently roam the course. The design incorporates a good mixture of skill requirements. A few holes play short, but others are of a more standard length. Three of the par fours play around 300 yards, and the other two are 341 and 376 yards. You’ll find the golf course at 141 Veterans Drive. There is no membership required to play. COLUMBUS CITY POOL - The municipal pool, which is open to the public, is located at 102 Legion Drive. You’ll find that it is a great way to cool off during the summer. It is a public pool that is available for party rental by calling 979732-8058. COLORADO RIVER - This paddling trail can take anywhere from two to five hours to complete, and the peaceful waters and calm rapids will give you a wonderful day on the river. The put-in for this trail is at the 71 (Business) crossing under the North River Bridge. Look for signage directing you to the boat ramp. The pick-up is at Beason’s Park, mentioned on the facing page. DAIRY CONE - Since 1950, Dairy Cone has been a Columbus icon – that’s 72 years in the making! How many small-town burger joints can measure up to The Cone’s time-tasted legacy? You’ll have to decide for yourself! This local favorite offers traditional drive-in foods like thick cut fries, juicy hamburgers with fresh ingredients, and classic malts and ice cream sundaes all made with Blue Bell. Dairy Cone is located at 836 Walnut Street.

OUT ON THE TOWN

W

hile small towns are often accused of being boring or monotonous, Columbus boasts a strong case against such labels. Undeniably small with a population of fewer than 4,000, this town is rich in history and has few contenders when it comes to dining and/or drinking opportunities. Columbus features an impressive inventory of eateries, each with its own distinctive flair.

Above, Hound Song Brewing Co., “It’s not just the beer ... they have really great burgers!”

Below is a selection, not a comprehensive list, of some of our local treasures. Listed alphabetically, each entry begins with a general description or vibe and ends with a fun suggestion. The quotes and photographs were selected from random customers during research.

Right, Los Cabos Mexcian Grill, “Mexican food is just fun food, and Cabos has the best.”

BLAKE’S KITCHEN & KOCKTAILZ – Blake’s has an inviting and energizing feel, with a touch of industrial (concrete floors and giant garage door). It’s a large open space that invites customers to socialize and have fun; making noise is allowed as well. With a large central bar, Blake’s serves almost any drink imaginable. In addition, the food menu is broad and versatile, from appetizers to desserts, burgers to steak, and more. TRIPS PUBLICATIONS RECOMMENDS: Share a margarita flight; servings are generous and flavors are fun!

HOUND SONG BREWING CO. – This brewery is always a happening place. With both indoor and outdoor seating, you can choose your own adventure. All made on location, their craft beer options are numerous and impressive. Not a beer drinker? Hound Song has a selection of ciders and wines, too. Hound Song’s full-service kitchen serves sandwiches, burgers, and a variety of house-made shareable snacks. TRIPS PUBLICATIONS RECOMMENDS: Play a game! The back area of the brewery offers a mixture of challenges, including Corn Hole, Ring & Hook, Jenga, and board games.

COURTYARD WINE BAR AT LIVE OAK ART CENTER – When the weather is nice, this is a perfect choice. As its name suggests, this wine bar presents true courtyard ambiance. The wide-open space has a feeling of seclusion even though it’s situated in the middle of downtown. The Courtyard offers a variety of wines of course, as well as beer options. One of an assortment of food trucks and/or vendors is on hand most evenings. TRIPS PUBLICATIONS RECOMMENDS: Grab a couple glasses of wine and walk inside to view the current exhibit in the Live Oak Art Center gallery.

LOS CABOS MEXICAN GRILL – If you want great Mexican food, Los Cabos is your best bet. The music, colorful tiles, giant murals, and homemade tortillas being flipped on an open grill are added perks to the tasty, authentic cuisine. Enjoy fresh chips and salsa as you dine. And don’t forget the margaritas; they are always a hit! TRIPS PUBLICATIONS RECOMMENDS: Complimentary queso is served at lunchtime. Make your “date night” a daytime outing.

OUT ON THE TOWN

Left, Magnolia Society at the Hotel Colorado, “You can’t get this experience anywhere else in town. This place is a notch above.” Right, Nancy’s Steakhouse, “It’s my favorite. I like their food, and we always see people we know.”

MAGNOLIA SOCIETY AT THE HOTEL COLORADO – This is your chance to experience some of the finer things in life – upscale dining and elegant style. The unique vibe at Magnolia Society is a mixture of fancy, romantic, and fun! The food is exclusive, the drinks are swanky, and the service is uber-attentive. The only detail that’s not over-the-top at Magnolia Society is the price. TRIPS PUBLICATIONS RECOMMENDS: Dress fancy; ask your server to snap a photo. It may become your new profile pic!

NANCY’S STEAK HOUSE – With its rustic Western theme, Nancy’s Steak House is a perfect choice for hearty, American food. Known, of course, for its steak, Nancy’s has an extensive menu offering seafood, chicken, pasta, and more. Its salad bar is one of the best around, and the complimentary rolls and butter are something special. The atmosphere is relaxing and quiet, a great place to enjoy a conversation. TRIPS PUBLICATIONS RECOMMENDS: Sit in the full-service bar area for a cozier vibe and dining experience.

MORE IDEAS TO ENJOY DOWNTOWN •

If your evenings are already taken, meet for breakfast or lunch at The Dewberry Café.

Take a walk through historic downtown; learn some of Columbus’ remarkable history.

Grab a sweet treat from OST Creamery; enjoy it in the bank park or on the courthouse square.

Visit local favorite drive-in Dairy Cone and enjoy a juicy hamburger while sharing a Blue Bell ice cream shake.

Belly up to the bar; enjoy an evening of dancing at Old 300 Saloon & Venue.

And, don’t forget about Lamberto’s Brandon House Bistro! (see page 26)

SUMMER FUN | KARA KLEIMANN

This is all the Lord’s story

Pine Cove Central Texas TJ “PHILLY” CONNOR TALKS ABOUT ANSWERED PRAYERS, HIS OWN JOURNEY, AND CAMP NICKNAMES Numbers don’t lie, and Pine Cove Central Texas has some big ones – four camps on 720 acres, 30 full-time employees, 600 summer staffers, ten weeks with 1000 campers per session. Pine Cove is quite a happening place!

TJ “PHILLY” CONNOR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Founded in 1967, Pine Cove camps have provided Christian ministry to more than one million people. Pine Cove’s theme is “Christcentered, others-focused, and seriously fun.” Currently, there are twelve Pine Cove camps in three states. Pine Cove Central Texas, located

14 | COLUMBUS, TEXAS

north of Columbus on Highway 71, opened in 2002. When asked how the local camp came to be, Executive Director TJ Connor prefaced his answer with, “this is all the Lord’s story. What God has done here is remarkable.”

Above, The Oasis swimming pool at Camp Silverado is a hit with campers. Courtesy photos.

The short version involves a prayerful search for “500-1000 acres with rolling hills, some woods, and some water, specifically,” TJ stated. Through a unique chain of events and an extremely generous donation, the current property became Pine Cove Central Texas at Crier Creek. This 720-acre piece of land has it all – hills, woods, water, and many blessings from God. Raised in Pennsylvania, TJ encountered Pine Cove on a tip from his brother. Though TJ fell in love with Pine Cove on his first visit and was offered a job, he sadly had to turn it down due to a prior commitment. However, a few years later the opportunity presented itself again, and TJ grabbed it. “I started on our registration team,” TJ recalled, “then I hopped onto one of our travel teams.” TJ advanced to director and never looked back. In 2020, TJ “Philly” Connor became the executive director of Pine Cove Central Texas. To help campers quickly connect with counselors, every Pine Cove employee has a camp name! Chosen and approved by the other staffers, each name is unique to the individual and his or her past experiences. For example, TJ’s camp name is “Philly” because he grew up in Philadelphia. According to TJ, “at Pine Cove we like this because it offers a really cool first impression to parents and campers. We all get asked ‘How did you get your camp name?’ which gives us an opportunity to engage in some fun conversation with them.” Pine Cove Central Texas boasts four camps – Crier Creek Family Camp, The Outback (grades 6-8), Silverado (grades 2-5), and The Ridge (grades 9-12). Camps run weekly throughout the summer. More than 600 college students from across the country are recruited each year to staff these camps. Often on days off, these summer staffers can be found in local restaurants or businesses. Just look for khaki shorts and a Pine Cove T-shirt. FUN FACT: TJ Connor’s full camp name is “Philly-Atric Cheese Break.” If you want to know the rest of his story, go see him at Pine Cove Central Texas, located at 1123 Creekwood Lane. Find more information, including camp dates and pricing, at pinecove.com.

NEW ULM

The Vault Wine & Taproom TERRY FAMILY TURNED A VACANT BANK BUILDING INTO A MODERN-DAY SPEAKEASY BY KARA KLEIMANN

18 | COLUMBUS, TEXAS

W

ant to experience the thrill of a prohibition-era speakeasy, without the fear of a police raid? You’re in luck! The Vault Wine Bar and Taproom in New Ulm offers this unique and exciting opportunity. Owned by Stan and Teresa Terry and primarily run by their daughter, Carris, The Vault Wine and Taproom is a fun addition to downtown New Ulm. With thirty successful years in the retail business, Stan is a confident entrepreneur. “I’ve been around the restaurant business for years and Teresa had a wine bar (Wine A Bit) before, so this is not our first gig. We kind of know what we’re doing; but this time we wanted to do something special.” Deciding to cash in on a bank theme, they transformed the modern bank into a prohibition-style speakeasy bar. From feathers and velvet to gangsters and machine guns, the interior design and décor are all reminiscent of the 1920s and 30s. Because it was originally a bank, the entire building was literally constructed around two back-to-back, indestructible vaults. With its transition from bank to bar, the building’s hours of operation are nearly reversed from early weekdays to late weekends. In addition, the two permanent vaults no longer keep monetary possessions under lock and key, but now offer a quaint, quiet setting to enjoy drinks with a friend. Appropriately named “The Vault,” another initial decision was exactly what libations to serve. Wine was a given, and The Vault offers fine wines at affordable prices. Stan elected to add the taproom component. “Tap beer is important to me,” he acknowledged, “and we want to support locals. Right now, we have two Hound Song beers on tap.”

From top, Carris, Stan, and Teresa pose for a quick photo moments before opening for the evening; a couple enjoys drinks and conversation in one of the unique vault spaces.

If I can’t remember their name, I at least remember their drink order The Terrys sincerely value their loyal customers. “We want to be like ‘Cheers;’” Teresa professed, “and we really try to memorize everyone’s names.” Cutting in, Carris laughed, “If I can’t remember their name, I at least remember their drink order. I think that’s more important anyway.” Focused on giving back to their community, the Terrys took an active role in the Angel Tree Project over the Christmas holidays. “We partnered with Columbus Elementary School,” Carris shared. “We received names of 25 children who were likely to not receive gifts for Christmas. I created anonymous templates, and all 25 kids

were quickly sponsored by members of our community.” Presents were dropped off at The Vault. “We had a wrapping party,” Teresa added. “Fifteen women came and wrapped all the presents.” Each child received multiple gifts from his/her wish list. So far, The Vault’s reception has been exceptional. Expressing gratitude to Columbus Chamber of Commerce, Stan and Teresa stated, “we had 60 people here at our official ribbon cutting.” With an estimated 250 patrons arriving throughout the evening for the grand opening, Carris remembered, “it was shoulder-to-shoulder in here; it felt like a downtown Houston club.”

Peggy Harrison instructs a patient during an aquatic therapy session.

Columbus Physical Therapy KRISTINA HILL AND RACHEL POST, PT TALK ABOUT THEIR ACTIVE ROLES Columbus Physical Therapy is in a small town, but nothing about this business is small time. Treating an average of more than ninety patients daily, CPT is an integral part of the community’s healthcare system. Providing innovative treatment for more than thirty years, Columbus Physical Therapy is owned by three equal partners:

Terry Sablatura, PT -- After earning his Physical Therapy degree in 1980 from UTMB Galveston, this Columbus native returned home aspiring to bring cutting-edge therapy to his community and the surrounding area. In 1988, Terry established an outpatient model at Columbus Community Hospital. Relocating and adding a pool for aquatic therapy less than a decade later, Terry brought Columbus Physical Therapy to a level rivaled only in urban areas.

22 | COLUMBUS, TEXAS

Though retired from patient treatment, Terry remains a component in CPT’s continuance. Kristina Hill – While still in high school, Kristina began working at CPT. Catching on quickly to the business itself, Kristina soon became CPT’s administrator; and in 2006, she became a partner in the company. Being part of the industry for more than three decades, Kristina has witnessed a great deal of transition and growth. “Doctors recognize that therapy is a necessary service,” she attested. In addition to physicians, Kristina continued, “the hospitals we work with (Columbus, Eagle Lake, and Hallettsville) have been very supportive of our services. We bring in quality staff and offer services that allow patients to receive exceptional treatment locally.” Rachel Post, PT – Introduced to therapy in childhood, Rachel decided as a young teenager to become a physical therapist. Moving to Columbus in 2002, Rachel joined the team as a newly licensed physical therapist, becoming CPT’s Director of Services only three years later. In 2012, Rachel joined Terry and Kristina as the third partner. Addressing what she has witnessed in her twenty years with CPT, Rachel shared, “we work hard to provide therapy that is competitive to anywhere else. We never want a patient to feel like they need to go into the city for services.” Continued on page 24.

Above, Terry Sablatura, PT (retired), Rachel Post, PT (Director of Services) and Kristina Hill (Administrator) are equal owners/partners of Columbus Physical Therapy; right, Payton Rerich, DPT uses passive stretching to increase a patient’s range of motion.

Each patient is treated one-on-one Left, Jill True, DPT works with a patient on shoulder strengthening.

Though its title is “Columbus,” CPT’s care covers an impressive forty-mile radius, providing treatment to patients in three hospitals and nine surrounding school districts. While the services CPT offers are too numerous to list, the most common conditions include surgery recovery, sports injuries, and general pain or weakness. Columbus Physical Therapy’s success is due in no small part to its dedicated and experienced staff of licensed medical professionals. Kristina verified, “Each patient is treated one-on-one by one of our qualified staff members.” That individual attention and care has kept CPT at the top of its game. Rachel concurred, “We work very hard to get people back to their highest level of function.” Both Kristina and Rachel expressed sincere gratitude to Columbus Community Hospital for its support and encouragement, both past and present. CPT was excited to be a part of the decision-making process for the design of the Columbus Health and Wellness Center building they now call home. In addition to the 12,000 square-feet of downstairs space that CPT occupies, the second story boasts a state-of-the-art fitness center available to the public for a monthly membership fee. Columbus Physical Therapy is located on the first floor of the Columbus Health and Wellness Center at 107 Shult Drive (across from Columbus Community Hospital).

Lamberto’s Brandon House Bistro LAMBERTO JUAREZ TALKS ABOUT HIS DELIBERATE JOURNEY TO BECOMING A RESTAURATEUR

Take a step back in time. Experience the charm of high Victorian style while dining on authentic, house-made Italian dishes. Lamberto’s Brandon House Bistro in downtown Columbus intuitively offers this exclusive fine dining opportunity. Lamberto Juarez started in the restaurant industry at only 15 years old, working for a family-owned Italian restaurant in central Texas. Over the next decade Lamberto served in a multitude of restaurant positions, performing tasks from bussing tables to cooking and serving, before moving into management. The next step for Lamberto was to own his own establishment. Following a brief search for an appropriate location, Lamberto opened his first restaurant in Eagle Lake – Lamberto’s Main Street Italian Restaurant. Less than two years later, Lamberto opened a second restaurant in Columbus. Location again was a key component. “We were just lucky to get this place,” Lamberto affirmed, in reference to the historic Brandon House. Desiring to maintain its unwavering charm, the building’s furniture and décor are remarkably unchanged. “It’s part of history; we wanted to keep that,” Lamberto continued. Even the name of the restaurant – Lamberto’s Brandon House Bistro – is an encouraging nod to the town’s rich and vivacious past.

It feels like a game … I like the pressure

Lamberto’s menu is extensive, offering classic Italian favorites like pasta dishes and pizza as well as unique seafood and meat options. “Our grilled lamb lollipops and any seafood on the grill are our best sellers,” Lamberto stated, “and the Tuscany Soup. Everybody loves that.” Authenticity and fresh ingredients are particularly important to Lamberto. “We make the pizza dough here from scratch,” he confirmed, “everything is from scratch; we make the bread every day.” Even the cocktails offered at Lamberto’s are made inhouse with fresh ingredients, the most popular being their martinis.

they will work the best, on the floor and in the kitchen.” Lamberto expounded, “I like the pressure, you know, the adrenaline.” Proficient and comfortable in every aspect, the restaurant business is truly Lamberto Juarez’s passion.

The key to restaurant success according to Lamberto is organization, knowing who and what – who your employees are and what is needed to make the situation work. “For me it feels like a game. You have to fix the pieces you have where

Clockwize, shrimp scampi over linguine pasta is a customer favorite at Lamberto’s Brandon House Bistro; a glass of cabernet sauvignon and freshmade mojito are just two of the many drink options at Lamberto’s; diners enjoy a bottle of wine with their classic pasta entrees.

Located at 616 Walnut Street in the historic downtown area of Columbus, Lamberto’s Brandon House Bistro is a worthwhile dining experience. To-go orders and catering are also available – 979.500.4381. Above, Mraz Quality Golf Carts’ store front displays sample carts available for purchase.

Mraz Quality Golf Carts KRISSY MRAZ SHARES HOW HER HUSBAND JOEY ENDED UP IN THE CUSTOM GOLF CART BUSINESS Playing golf (or even knowing how to play golf) is in no way a requirement for owning and enjoying a golf cart. Utilized for both work and leisure, golf carts have become an increasingly popular and versatile recreational vehicle that everyone can enjoy. Anyone travelling through Columbus on Highway 71 (aka Fannin Street) is unlikely to miss the impressive display of customized golf carts parked in front of Mraz Quality Golf Carts dealership. Interestingly, owners Joey and Krissy Mraz fell into the golf cart business almost by accident. Living

in Conroe at the time, Krissy revealed, “Joey was tinkering around in our garage, and he said to me, ‘I want to put bigger tires on our golf cart.’ He made our golf cart look really pretty, and we drove it around our neighborhood.” Some of the neighbors were impressed and asked Joey to embellish their golf carts as well. In only a couple weeks, Joey was working on five golf carts from friends and neighbors. “We had too many golf carts in our garage,” Krissy recalled laughing, “and Joey said, ‘I think we need to try this.’ And that’s how it all started.”

32 | COLUMBUS, TEXAS

It is important to know Joey’s former careers to make better sense of this current business venture. Joey Mraz started as a car salesman and spent two decades in that industry, moving up to general sales manager of a premier dealership in the Houston area. “Then, for family reasons,” Krissy explained, “Joey made a career switch to be an elevator mechanic.” Joey spent 12 years repairing industrial elevators until a shoulder injury forced him to take time off. Not wanting to just sit around, Joey worked on little projects in his garage; one such project was his golf cart. Clearly, Joey’s knowledge of both car sales and mechanical repairs were perfect skills for this new company. In 2020, Mraz Quality Golf Carts opened in Conroe. After nearly three busy years, Joey and Krissy decided to move their business to Columbus, opening in January 2023. Joey and his staff sell used golf carts as well as provide repairs and service to existing carts. However, customizing golf carts is perhaps what they do best. To quote Joey, “If you can dream it, we can build it.” From upgrades and accessories to body wraps that advertise your company or show your team spirit, Mraz Quality Golf Carts can assemble the golf cart of your dreams.

If you can dream it, we can build it.

The Mraz mascot, appropriately named “Baller,” is a giant smiling golf ball with arms, legs and a colorful hat. If you see him out front by the golf carts, stop and say hello or at least give him a wave and a honk. Located at 1538 Fannin Street, Mraz Quality Golf Carts can be found online at mrazgolfcarts. com and on Facebook.

From top, Joey and Krissy Mraz pose with their mascot “Baller” and their customized company golf cart; these colorful steering wheels are a small selection of accessories in the Mraz showroom; the triangular slow-moving vehicle placard seen here makes this golf cart street legal in most situations

KARA KLEIMANN

Meet the Teacher PAT BARTELS SHARES HOW HER CHILDHOOD DREAM BECAME A REALITY Her positive energy fills the classroom where 15 four- and fiveyear-olds are scattered about in various activity centers. Her voice, though soft and sweet, brings each preschooler to silent attention. There are smiles and a giggle as she announces, “come to the rug and make a circle; we are going to play alphabet bingo.” Pat Bartels (aka Ms. Pat) is clearly in her element. This is her happy place. As a preschooler herself, Pat Orange dreamed of becoming a teacher. Her younger brother, Scott, served as her first student. “I would put Scott in a chair,” Pat confessed, “he was only like two or three and I’d make him sit and play school and sing the ABCs and whatever. I remember loving to play school with my cousins, with my friends, with my Barbies.” However, Pat’s path to becoming a teacher took a few turns before reaching fruition.

The summer before her sophomore year in high school, Pat met her future husband at a local dance. Attempting to avoid a pesky stranger, Pat admitted, “I walked over to Ray and I hooked my arm (in his), and I just said ‘pretend you’re my boyfriend’ and the dude (that had been following her) walked up to us and I said, ‘Hey, do you know my boyfriend? His name is Ray.’” Pat laughed as she remembered Ray’s sweet but dumbfounded reaction. “Next thing you know,” Pat continued, “Ray pulled in my driveway a couple days later.” The rest is history; Pat’s “fake” boyfriend quickly morphed into the love of her life. Above, sensory bins provide Ms. Pat’s students with opportunities to explore and learn.

I want to build a foundation of good little humans

Pat graduated from Columbus High School, attended college and earned a Business degree, before marrying Ray Bartels. The couple began their married life in Columbus, where Pat worked in banking and bookkeeping, but moved to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue a job opportunity for Ray. While living in Atlanta and pregnant with their first child, Pat remembered, “I’d had a really bad day at work; I was hormonal and emotional … when Ray came home, I was sitting on our little patio, crying. Ray asked, ‘What do you want?’ and I said, ‘I want to go home.’” Though they loved Atlanta, Columbus would always be home so Pat and Ray moved home permanently. “We wanted to raise our family in Columbus,” Pat confirmed, “we loved the roots we have here.” Both their son and daughter attended St. Anthony Catholic School and graduated from Columbus High School. After a decade in the business world, Pat’s immersion into education came when she began volunteering at St. Anthony Catholic School in the office and classrooms. When offered a full-time position as a preschool teacher, Pat took the opportunity to live out her childhood dream. Her passion for children and teaching were apparent immediately as

“Ms. Pat” plunged naturally into her new profession. Her teaching philosophy focuses on the whole child. Pat affirmed, “Of course I introduce and encourage academics, but above and beyond that, I want to build a foundation of good little humans. I try to foster kindness, patience, independence, self-control, self-worth, and pride.” Her positivity is obvious and intense; Pat nurtures and empowers her “littles” with good stuff in preparation for the harsh realities they may face later in their lives. There is no doubt Pat has found her true calling. Though she’s been offered positions with other schools, Pat happily remains at SAS. “This is home,” Pat verified, “I feel like I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.” Ms. Pat’s whimsical and heartwarming experiences with students, though noteworthy, are too numerous to print. If you know Pat Bartels or any one of her students (past or present), you certainly appreciate the unforgettable joy she continues to bring to numerous preschoolers and their families. Top left, Ms. Pat stands in her favorite place in the classroom – the reading corner. “I could read ten books a day,” stated Pat, “I love to do the voices.” Right, Ms. Pat helps students learn their letters through Alphabet Bingo.

RECIPES FOR PICNICS

SPRINGTIME CAPRESE PASTA SALAD INGREDIENTS • salt and ground black pepper • 1 lb. short pasta, such as penne or bowtie • 1/2 c. white balsamic vinegar • 1/4 c. olive oil • 2 tbsp. honey ... get some locally from Columbus Farmers Market • 1 lb. grape or cherry tomatoes, halved • 8 oz. pearl-size mozzarella balls, drained, or 8 ounces fresh mozzarella, torn in small pieces • 1/2 c. loosely packed fresh basil, torn into large pieces PREPARATION 1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Cook pasta according to package directions; drain. Add 2 tablespoons of the oil. 2. Meanwhile, whisk together vinegar, oil, and honey in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Add hot pasta, tomatoes, and mozzarella balls; toss gently to coat. Add basil and toss to combine. 3. Serve chilled or at room temperature.

TURKEY AND HAM PINWHEELS INGREDIENTS AND SUPPLIES • deli sliced ham • deli sliced turkey • flour tortillas • cream cheese • ranch dip mix • finely shredded cheese • toothpicks PREPARATION In a small bowl mix the cream cheese and ranch dip mix until a creamy spread. Lay your flour tortilla out and spread a thin layer of the cream cheese and ranch dip mix on top. Place a layer of ham and turkey next (1-2 slices of ham and turkey to make sure tortilla is covered side-to-side). Sprinkle the shredded cheese across the top and then roll up the tortilla. You want to make sure you roll it up tightly. Use toothpicks to help keep the pinwheels closed and to serve. Each tortilla will make about eight pinwheels, depending on size you cut them. Pinwheels can be made in advance or on the day of your event.
