Welcome!
The small city of Schulenburg is located in the heart of Texas and considered “Halfway to Everywhere,” literally. It is approximately 100 miles east of San Antonio, 100 miles west of Houston, 60 miles southeast of Austin and 60 miles north of Victoria.
Founded in 1873, the town is rich in German and Czech culture. Plan to stay a few days to experience everything it has to offer. If you have an appetite for some ethnic food, you can have sausage, sauerkraut, schnitzel, bierocks, kolaches, or klobasnikys.
You have an opportunity to delve into the unique local history by visiting the Schulenburg Historical Museum that chronicles the town’s rise from a train stop to the bustling town it is today, the Stanzel Model Aircraft Museum which offers interactive and static exhibits and the Texas Polka Music Museum, where you learn about the music the immigrants brought to the area in the 1800s.
An important question to ask is “Have you Painted yet?” Schulenburg is “The Official Home of the Painted Churches,” the name given to us by the Texas State Legislature in 2005. These six churches were built in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s by immigrants and sit in tiny hamlets in the countryside around Schulenburg. The parishioners wanted to emulate the beautiful cathedrals of their home countries. As a result, the churches are resplendent with stenciling, gold leaf, tromp l’oeil, and stained glass. When you step through their doors you feel as if you have crossed the ocean to the European shores. The Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce offers guided tours of these beauties so that you can learn about the history, the art, and the symbolism in each of them.
Being “Halfway to Everywhere” makes Schulenburg a wonderful place to live. There are retail and manufacturing businesses of all types. The realtors in the area will help you find the home of your dreams. And there is a magnificent Retirement Community that offers all levels of Senior Citizen care should you want to make Schulenburg home for your golden years.
The school systems are outstanding. Schulenburg ISD’s mission is to “Create Shorthorns Forever—Educating and empowering our students for success.” This is accomplished through our Shared Vision where our students are excited and motivated. Our students are expected to demonstrate strong character values and ethics, possess the knowledge and skills to be “future-ready,” to rise to challenges and manage life’s adversity and exhibit pride in their school and in themselves.
St. Rose of Lima Catholic School houses grades PreK3 – 8th Grade. The school’s mission is “We are God’s Presence to the world, developing Excellence through Jesus since 1889.” This is accomplished by combining faith, academic principles and moral values with a commitment to educating the whole child, mind, body and soul. Building strong connections, social/emotional skills, and a school family is a priority. Being consistent in a curriculum which is vertically aligned, and teaching as Christ did with love while modeling discipleship makes St. Rose of Lima Catholic School a unique choice in education.
Welcome to Schulenburg. Here at the Greater Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce, we would be glad to be of service to you.

Schulenburg, Texas is called a “railroad town,” “halfway to everywhere,” the “musician town,” “home of the painted churches,” “gateway to the rolling hills” and many others. It was founded when the Galveston, Houston and San Antonio Railway reached here in 1873. At that time the many people in the communities of Lyons and High Hill moved to the new railroad town of Schulenburg.
Schulenburg was named after Louis Schulenburg, who donated the land for the city. The community was granted a post office in 1874 and incorporated in 1875. Before the town of Schulenburg was born, English, German, Czech and other European citizens settled this area, bringing with them their religious beliefs, tools and way of life.
Another land donor, John Christian Baumgarten Sr., was one of the original “Forty-eighters” from Germany. Baumgarten built a cottonseed-crushing plant in the community and also operated a lumberyard, planing mill, sash and door factory, and cotton gin. In 1883, he opened the Schulenburg Oil Mill, which manufactured Baumgarten Process Allison Flour from cottonseed.
In 1884, the community had 1,000 inhabitants, two churches, a bank, schools, thirteen general stores, and four saloons. Schulenburg had electric lights by 1896, and in 1900, the community had 1,149 inhabitants. By 1914, it had Baptist, Catholic, Lutheran, and Methodist churches and the G. E. Ruhmann plant, which manufactured steel furnaces and wire goods.
The population of the town rose to 1,246 in 1920, 1,640 in 1930, and 1,970 in 1940. In 1945 Schulenburg had 112 businesses, including two manufacturing companies, three cotton gins, a machine shop, and the Stanzel Company—a model airplane factory. Today you can learn more about the Stanzel Company at the Stanzel Museum in Schulenburg.
The population of the town continued to increase in the postwar period, reaching 2,207 in 1960, 2,347 in 1980, and 2,455 in 1990. The population was 2,699 in 2000 and 2,945 in 2015.
Schulenburg has a rich musical heritage, especially polka music, and has had several orchestras. You can learn more at the Texas Polka Music Museum.

SCHULENBURG HISTORICAL MUSEUM - The Schulenburg Historical Museum was established by John and Karen Wolters. John is the great- grandson of Robert A. Wolters who started a mercantile business in Schulenburg and became one of its more prominent citizens. The building housing the current museum exhibits was the old Wolters Mercantile built in the early 1900s. The museum has been housed in this building since 1988 at the largesse of the Wolters family, but in December 2014 the Wolters estate gift-deeded the current building and the building next door to the museum. Admission is free but donations are gladly accepted to help offset the cost of operations and maintaining two historic buildings.

Joe’s HOMETOWN HANGOUT
BY KARA KLEIMANNIf you’re a sports fan, enjoy delicious food and drinks, or just want to hang out with friends, Joe’s in Schulenburg is the place to be!
Featuring twelve big-screen TVs, impressive food items, and abundant drink options, Joe’s has it all! Located on Main Street in Schulenburg, owners Mike and Holly Czimskey opened the new establishment in May 2023. Joe’s is next door to Tillie’s Café, a breakfast, lunch and coffee shop, also owned by Mike and Holly. The two eateries even share a kitchen, but the menus are distinct from one another. For the most part, Tillie’s uses the kitchen early in the day, and Joe’s takes over in the afternoon and evening.
Joe’s is named in honor of Holly’s cousin, Joe Stavinoha. Joe and Holly grew up together in Schulenburg, graduating from Schulenburg High School in 1999. “Joe was an avid sports fan. He played every sport possible as a Schulenburg Shorthorn,” Holly shared. “We lost him suddenly in 2014.” Looking around the bar, Holly continued, “We thought this would be a great way to pay tribute to Joe and provide a fun sports experience for our hometown. We call Joe’s a ‘hometown hangout’ and that’s what we want it to be.”
Holly created a mascot for Joe’s that pays homage to her cousin’s personality; she explained, “Joe was funny and larger than life all the time. We want to inject that humor and fun into what we do.” The little Joe icon, found on menus and social media, can be seen winking, running, cheering, and always having fun.
From top, holding her cousin’s helmet, Holly & Mike Czimskey reverently pose in front of Joe’s Shorthorns football jersey; hand-breading and homemade sauces raise Joe’s tenders and wings to a higher taste level; Joe’s mascot pays homage to Holly’s cousin, Joe Stavinoha.
The drink choices are extensive at Joe’s; there are options for everyone. For beer drinkers, Joe’s provides four beers on tap – two regulars and two rotating. In addition to draft beer, a dozen or more beers are available by the bottle. Joe’s notable wine list includes red wine, white wine, sweet wine, dry wine, and even bubbly options. Their full bar offers specialty shots and cocktail drinks as well as call drinks. This bar is not just about drinks; Joe’s delivers a comprehensive food menu as well. From appetizers to fresh salads to burgers, Joe’s is a sure crowd pleaser. Though the menu lists many stereotypical bar food items, Holly noted, “We make a lot of items in house to give it an elevated experience, not just typical bar food.” For example, their homemade Tillie’s Hot Honey Sauce is a best seller to accompany Joe’s chicken wings.
Joe’s hosts a daily Happy Hour, including specialty shots and
discounted drinks. Thirsty Thursdays offer happy hour pricing all night. Also, Holly confirmed, “We’ll be hosting
to watch two games concurrently.” Not surprisingly, the Shorthorns will be on one of those two screens.
When asked about the response so far, Mike said, “It’s been great. It’s packed a lot of times. The [Schulenburg] Festival was a really busy weekend.” Mike expressed gratitude to the City of Schulenburg, the Economic Development Committee, and the Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce for their help and support. Speaking about Joe’s location, “Main Street is an area that Schulenburg is aiming to revitalize,” Mike stated. “This was a vacant, dark building for thirty years.” Thanks to Mike and Holly’s vision and hard work, that building is no longer dark or vacant.

Oakridge Smokehouse
BY KARA KLEIMANNOakridge Smokehouse Restaurant has been serving homemade country cooking for over 50 years. As I begin to write this story, I find that condensing half a century of information into two pages is a daunting task. Thus, I will instead present four C’s – creation, consistency, customers, chicken – that I found to stand out as I researched this thriving business.
Creation – Born and raised on the outskirts of Schulenburg, Roy Bucek served our country in World War II before coming home to start a family and a business. Originally opening a meat locker service in the late 1940s and later smoking meat to sell, Roy and his wife Vera built and opened Oakridge Smokehouse Restaurant in 1969. According to their daughter, Barbara Moellenberndt, “This place opened in summer of 1969. My mother and father did the designs on the crooked windows; they liked rustic stuff and they thought this would be fun and catchy. I was a waitress here
when it opened. On weekends, the lines would be out the door.”
Roy and Vera owned the restaurant for 25 years, until Robert and Pam Besetsny bought Oakridge Smokehouse in 1994. “Robert was like a son to my dad,” Barbara explained; “He had worked for Dad since high school.” Rightly anticipating continued success, Robert and Pam added the patio dining area to the restaurant’s north side. This increased the total seating capacity from 150 to well over 200 diners.
Consistency – From great food to attentive service to timeless décor, not a lot has changed over the years. Consistency has been a key to Oakridge Smokehouse’s unceasing success. A buffet of fresh salad and homemade country foods is served daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The crooked windows and hand-painted murals continue to delight customers.
One main wall displays license plates from far and wide. “Back in the day people would bring in their license plate to go up on the wall,” waitress Maria Salas told me, “It kind of died down, but we still get them sometimes.”
Another thing that hasn’t changed is the popularity of Oakridge’s fresh baked pastries and smoked items, especially the jerky. Manager Michael Hebert confirmed, “We ship jerky all year long to everywhere in the United States. Hunting season is the most popular time of year.”
Customers – While snapping photos at the restaurant, I encountered a table of four who were visiting after lunch. When they inquired about my photography motives, we engaged in a delightful conversation. The diners were two charming couples from opposite directions – Bill and Linda Knesek from Rosenburg and Richard and Sandy Mechler from Seguin. On this day, they were celebrating Richard’s birthday; Bill had baked a cake for the occasion. Best friends
for more than a decade, the couples meet at Oakridge Smokehouse several times a year to enjoy a meal together and catch up on life. When I asked why they chose this restaurant, Bill answered, “we’re comfortable here. It’s nice, and they’re good to us.” The others chimed in expressing their fondness for the cozy, country ambiance and friendly people; obviously, the food is good, too.
Chicken – What is the most popular and most talked-about menu item? Oakridge’s fried chicken tends to top the charts. Finding fried chicken in the south is not a trick, but finding any better than Oakridge’s might be quite a feat. People come from all directions to experience Oakridge Smokehouse’s hand-breaded, deep-fried chicken.
Located at 712 US-77 (just off I-10) in Schulenburg, Oakridge Smokehouse Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. Visit theoakridgesmokehouse.com for more information.
Facing page, only repainted over the years, the exterior appearance of Oakridge Smokehouse Restaurant has stood the test of time; far left, the eclectic license plate display can be seen on the wall behind the buffet in the main dining room; above, Oakridge is a great place to gather with friends; left, waitress Maria Salas pours tea for a customer.

The Garden Company
BY KARA KLEIMANN“Unexpected” is the adjective used most often when describing one’s first visit to The Garden Company Café, according to customer reviews. One of the most popular restaurants on I-10 between San Antonio and Houston, many ask, “How did the little town of Schulenburg acquire such a gem?”
Owned by Jeff and Stevie Thompson, The Garden Company began as a nursery and landscaping business with a gift shop. Originally across the street from its current site, Stevie reminisced about the property it now sits on. “The house was built in 1907 for $1000,” she confirmed. “It served as a home until the 1970s,” when the owners moved
away. The house was vacant for nearly thirty years. From across the street, Stevie saw the “For Sale” sign posted in the yard. “I called Jeff and said, ‘We have to go look at it.’” Jeff made some calls about buying the property before they even went to look at it. Apparently, it was meant to be because the Thompsons made the purchase and moved their business, opening on April 1, 2000.
The house soon became a successful retail shop filled with gifts and home items. The idea to add food options came a decade later; Stevie began with the idea of offering a few lunch options to customers. Jeff elaborated,
“Stevie always wanted to have a small place where we would serve soups and salads and a glass of wine for the girls to enjoy when they come in to do their shopping.” Stevie agreed, “We originally thought we would do soups and sandwiches with just us and a couple of employees.”
However, Jeff saw the need to be open additional hours. He explained, “In order to make the business profitable we needed to be open for dinner … so we brought in steaks and seafood and burgers and pizza.” In fact, only a month before opening their café venture, a chef was hired and a full menu was created. In 2014, The
EATS & TREATS
Garden Co. Café opened daily for lunch and several nights a week for dinner. It was an instant sensation both locally and outside the community. Their most popular food item by far is their crispy brussel sprouts appetizer. “We serve almost one for every table,” Jeff verified.
In addition to delicious food, The Garden Co. Café is known for its show-stopping interior décor. Featuring a rustic modern style, Stevie’s inspiration and creativity brought the restaurant to life. “I love to use natural elements in my aesthetics. We built all the tables ourselves.” Stevie also designed most of the lighting; the entryway features a light fixture crafted from old garden implements. Since the nursery is part of the company, Stevie indicated, “I like to pull in the garden motif as well.” Live plants and repurposed wood are abundant throughout the restaurant.
Jeff and Stevie launched their second restaurant in Round Top only three years after their original establishment. “We had a friend in Round Top that asked us to come out there.” Stevie shared. “We already had a little gift shop in Round Top at that time;” this made the task of adding a restaurant less daunting. Both restaurants, The Garden Co. Café in Schulenburg and The Garden Co. Feed & Firewater in Round Top, are thriving.
In Schulenburg, The Garden Co. Marketplace & Café is located at 217 Kessler Ave.

STAY AWHILE
The Sinclair
BY KARA KLEIMANNIt’s old. It’s new. It’s classic. It’s contemporary. Finding a singular word to describe the vintage Sinclair station on State Highway 90 West is perhaps impossible. The immaculate and captivating exterior seems frozen in time. Have you ever wondered what’s inside? Here’s your chance to find out more about this illustrious vacation rental.
Joe and Roxanne Orsak, owners of The Sinclair, revealed the history of the structure. “It started out as a gas station with a seating area,” Roxanne initiated, “there were two bays … an office and a restroom.” The Sinclair station was shut down, along with a multitude of other stations on Highway 90, soon after Interstate-10 opened. “It was an America Muffler Shop
training center for a few years,” Joe declared, where mechanics were trained. When the Orsaks purchased the vacant property, they were unsure what its future held. According to Roxanne, in reference to the neglected station, “I just didn’t want this to go away. I thought what a cool thing to bring it back to look like the 1950s Sinclair gas station.”
With the exterior’s fate settled, the next quandary was what to do inside the building. Since they already owned several rental properties, the Orsaks were comfortable in that industry. Thus, “The Sinclair” vacation rental was created.
Roxanne began by sketching a layout for the interior rooms. It became a family affair as Joe and Roxanne enlisted their daughter, Victoria, to style the lodging. “She does all the design work in terms of finishes, colors, furniture … you name it,” Roxanne clarified. Roxanne’s brother, owner of Demel’s Welding and Construction, served as their contractor. With a glance at her husband, Roxanne smiled, “and Joe gets to be the guy who handles everything for us.”
Authenticity was of highest priority for the Orsaks in their new project. “Keeping it as authentic as possible was probably our biggest challenge,” Roxanne admitted. They were determined to maintain or restore all parts of the outer building to accurately replicate the original 1950s station. There were parts of the eroding building that had to be replaced due to a lack of structural soundness, but “the exterior walls are all intact,” Joe added.
The two gas pumps that sit in their original spots are authentic 1950’s pumps that were restored to their original look, including the Sinclair green color. Joe talked about the sign that hangs above the station, “that came from a local resident in town.” It serves as the perfect touch to the authentic exterior of the property.
What’s inside? The Sinclair rental boasts three bedrooms and two bathrooms; it houses six
guests comfortably! A full kitchen, lounging space, and two dining spots are all part of the open concept living area. Not surprisingly, the interior features a nostalgic, vintage look and includes a fully functioning 1950’s jukebox and nickel gumball machines. Classic décor –authentic hubcaps, a vintage tailgate, a variety of metal trays and signage – adorn the walls of The Sinclair.
In addition to its clever interior, The Sinclair provides two alluring outdoor gathering areas for guests to enjoy. The sizable fencedin backyard has a large firepit with multiple seating options as well as a gas grill and yard games. If something cozier is preferred, guests can climb the spiral staircase to lounge on the roof deck, while they enjoy a 360-degree view of the area.
Come see for yourself! Experience the look and feel of classic 1950s while enjoying the modern conveniences and comforts of today. Rental information can be found online at evolve.com or most vacation rental sites.
Facing page: left, Joe and Roxanne Orsak, owners and creators of The Sinclair, offer guests a nostalgic getaway to the 1950s; from top, The Sinclair bedrooms combine modern comfort with fun, retro décor; upon entering The Sinclair, guests are welcomed with local wine and a history of the unique lodging.

CONTEST - Get ready to experience the magic of Merry ARTS, a captivating Plein Aire Competition set to grace Schulenburg, Texas, this holiday season. Commencing on November 29, this engrossing event will set twenty-five talented artists to embark on a four-day journey to paint the very essence of a Schulenburg winter.
Plein air refers to the practice of painting or creating artwork outdoors, directly in front of the subject or scene being depicted. It involves artists working on location, often in natural landscapes, urban settings, or any outdoor environment that inspires their creativity.

30+ YEARS IN SCHULENBURG
Chuck Brown Ford
BY KARA KLEIMANN“Don’t Mess with Texas” and “Ford is the Best in Texas” rank at the top of a list of Texas advertising slogans. It’s no surprise to find Ford in a top position, as Ford has produced the top-selling truck in America for the past 46 consecutive years.
Chuck Brown Ford in Schulenburg is a proud dealer of those top-selling trucks. According to finance manager Travis Vanicek, “Our constant top sellers are the F250s and F350s, the Super Duty trucks.” Especially in rural Texas, Travis explained, “the three-quarter ton and one-ton trucks are top sellers around here. No doubt.”
Chuck Brown Ford has been owned and operated by the Brown family since 1988 when Chuck bought the business, after nearly a decade in the sales department. Its current owner, Tommy Brown, purchased the dealership from his father in 2022.
Perhaps the greatest change during Chuck’s ownership occurred in 2001, when the dealership moved from its original downtown location to its current site on the I-10 frontage road. Employed at the dealership for over forty years, office manager Belinda Kocurek shared her memory of the downtown location. “The office was more like a closet. We had four people shoved into a hole the size of that office right there,” she laughed, pointing to one of the current single office spaces.
Chuck Brown Ford’s current location separates it from many other dealerships because of its accessibility from every direction. When discussing location, Travis referred to Schulenburg’s tagline “halfway to everywhere.” He agreed, “it’s true. We have customers from Houston, San Antonio, Austin … they call and say ‘oh, you’re about an hour or hour and a half away.’” Also, being situated just off I-10 makes getting there virtually effortless.
In addition to selling vehicles, the dealership boasts a top-notch service department. “It’s full service, anything you need done,” Travis stated. The dealership provides loaner vehicles for customers and offers pick-up and delivery of any vehicle being serviced. “That’s a big hit,” Travis disclosed. Customers appreciate their vehicle being picked up, serviced, and returned to them, rather than having to wait while their vehicle is repaired.
It’s no surprise that technology is moving forward in the vehicle world. “Every single vehicle coming out has new
technology,” Travis confirmed, “like hands free driving. It’s amazing what some of these vehicles can do.” Technology has evolved in the office as well with paperless purchasing. “You sign the purchase order, odometer statement, title application, your contract ... everything is signed on here,” Travis clarified, pointing to his desktop. All documents are automatically saved to a USB drive that is handed to the customer at the end of the sale.
Family-owned for over thirty years, the Schulenburg business enthusiastically gives back to its community. In addition to being a dedicated Turtle Wing Foundation sponsor, Chuck Brown Ford contributes to a variety of both city and county-wide outreach programs.
It’s amazing what some of these vehicles can do.Above, view from west-bound I-10.

City of Schulenburg, Texas
Welcome to Schulenburg, halfway to everywhere and with a heart as big as Texas!
On behalf of myself, the city council and the citizens of Schulenburg, I welcome you to our town. I ask that if you’re passing through, either on Highway 77 or IH-10, exit and see what all we have to offer. Our downtown area has some unique shops and stores. We have a couple of museums that display and highlight various aspects of the history of our town. There are also unique stores along Highway 77, like a meat market where you can actually pick your fresh steak out of the showcase. There are some great eating places and some convenience stores that can accommodate all of your needs.
I was born and raised here and have no desire to live anywhere else. I graduated from Schulenburg High School and both of my children have, too. We also have a great private Catholic school that offers PK3 thru 8th grade classes. People always ask why I stayed and never moved away; I love the citizens. They are all willing to help when there is a need and your heart will feel the warmth and compassion that each one has. Schulenburg being home to the painted churches shows that. Everyone is so proud of the history that is preserved in these churches and everyone loves to talk about them.
I pray that your stay is enjoyable and that you will want to come visit us again. Be safe on the roads and God bless.
Mayor Connie Koopmann

Meet the Neighbors
FLATONIA - A charming town proud of their Czech and German heritage with beautiful landscapes, ranches and countryside surrounding the town. There are a wide variety of antique and gift shops, a pharmacy, and an old-world museum. Flatonia is still a well known and scenic spot for train watchers, boasting one of Texas’ longest standing, manually operated railroad switching towers with NorthSouth, East-West cross rails.
The 9-hole course at the Flatonia Golf Course facility features 3,056 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 36. The fairways are narrow and the greens are elevated. Flatonia Golf Course is located at 1245 East US Highway 90.
HALLETTSVILLE - Their annual Kolache Festival every September offers a full day of family entertainment. The day starts off with the Kolache Fest Parade on the town square, then moves to the Hallettsville Knights of Columbus Hall for the domino tournament, kolache bake-off, polka music, arts and crafts booths, kolaches and more!
LA GRANGE - La Grange is nestled along the Colorado River and features history, beauty, festivals, museums, concerts, antiques, air shows, feasts, and an annual county country fair. Drive only 22 scenic miles to visit Monument Hill & Kreische Brewery State Historic Sites, 414 State Loop 92. Open daily; the park is free to the public.
WEIMAR - Weimar’s picturesque downtown bustles with businesses, shops, great eateries, antique shops and a tavern where locals play dominoes and German card games. You’ll also want to stop by and see St. Michael Catholic Church, a structure you can’t miss ... just look for the steeple that can be seen before you reach the town itself.
Established as a Mission in 1888, the imposing edifice was constructed of Elgin brick by Italian and Mexican craftsmen directed by contractors L. M. and J. C. Dielmann of San Antonio. The Gothic revival architectural style reflects the central European heritage of the Czechoslovakian and German settlers.
From top, Southern Produce Gallery in Flatonia offers an artistic journey; Hallettsville is a short drive for springtime wildflowers; Monument Hill in La Grange offers tours full of Texas history; Weimar’s Gedenke! Festival is a family-friendly event, always Mother’s Day weekend.
