In regards to the dying trades in Singapore, the designers came together to inform the public about the stories of the dying trades of Singapore through the means of a pavilion that is inspired by their lifestyle. The pavilion will narrate the story of the chosen subculture. A thorough inspection and analysis was carried out in Chinatown, to identify and spot certain dying trades that form the identity of Singapore’s rich and diverse cultures coexisting in the country. The Hindu Temple Priest was finally chosen to be the topic to be explored. The nostalgic experience of the pavilion will help individuals gain a deeper insight into the roots of Singapore. Located alonside the Clarke Quay river.

SITE EXPLORED: Chinatown, Singapore.

About Sri Mariamman temple: Sri Mariamman Temple was founded in 1827 by the Indian Naraina Pillay during the colonial period. This Hindu temple is named after the principal deity, Mariamman, who is a South Indian goddess and is said to cure bad illnesses. About the Temple Structure: The temple is built in Dravidian architectural style. The temple structure is a trapezoidal prism that points to the sky, the purpose of which is to bring humans and gods closer, using symbolism to express the ideas and beliefs of Hinduism. The exterior of the temple is noted for its ornate sculptures of mythical beasts deities and soldiers. These colourful sculptures make it one of the most astonishing buildings in Singapore.

03 THE AUM / PAVILLION DESIGN

34

Design Concept The Aum is an educative and interactive pavilion inspired by the lifestyle of the priest. It aims to narrate the lifestyle and work of the Hindu Priest. “AUM” is a mantra that is chanted by the temple priest as it embodies strenght. Uncover Uncovering means exposing and which is done by dissecting the temple’s top structure(Gopuram) part by part into different layers and drawing modular structures that would join to compose the temple structure. The design includes the modular hexagonal structures that are derived from the temple tiers at the top of the temple (Trapezoidal prism). Explore Exploring would mean ‘to travel in or through something’ . This will be indicated by creating a path for the people to follow, which would be the path of flow of the temple visitors.

35

03 THE AUM / PAVILLION DESIGN

conceptualisation and DESIGN PROCESS MODEL 1: A radius for cutting the slits on the paper was decided and cut accordinly. They were then folded and when expanded, they created such a structure. design techniques used: cutting, folding and expansions

MODEL PROCESS 2: The hexagonal shape was extracted and then a ‘Z’ shaped stucture was cut out. these were then linked together to form the original hexagonal shape. design techniques used: tying.

03 THE AUM / PAVILLION DESIGN

MODEL PROCESS 3: The hexagonal shape was extracted and then each fold was illustrated as asingle component. They were then repeated in numbers and slits were made to be able to intersect(insert in the slit, creating a joint) them. These peices were then stacked one on top of each other by interlacing them in the slits and securing them in place. design techniques used: cutting, folding, interlacing

MODEL 4: This design was inspired by teh initial model. the fold in the model was extracted and each component was used as one modular strusture. they were then increased in size and stacked one after each other. They were thenn placed in such a way that when people walked they’d be following the flow of path of movement of the temple visitors design techniques used: Stacking and repetion

CIRCULATION PLAN CIRCULATION FLOW: This immitates the flow of path of the temple visitors

MATERIALS USED: The main frame structure is composed of teak wood which is very durable and sustainable. Cotton cloth (worn by the priest) is used to cover some of the openings to partially let light in and can be used as a canvas for projections of the story line. For the panels, SRPX - Self Reinforced Polymer Matrix, from Miniwiz shall be used as it is very sustainable, durable and light-weight material.

ISOMETRIC

The trianle formed in te centre of the pavilion is a symbol of God Siva which denotes His Absolute Being. It represents the element fire and portrays the process of spiritual ascent and liberation spoken of in scripture. Hence, in the centre area, also pertaining to the fire walking festival, sand is placed and holographic projections are depicted to show the story.
