CAFE KI ID-INC DESIGN

Ki means a tree in Japanese. It is a cafe where coffee and pastries can be enjoyed in a space like a yard or a forest. The pure white space enhances the coffee colored trees. The “tree” standing inside the café takes a role as a table leg made of steel. Hats and coats can be hung on the highly extended table legs. LOCATION: TOKYO, JAPAN YEAR: 2014 TRIPTOD.COM

Although a large number of people can sit around the big table, it can maintain a sense of comfortable distance while sharing the table with a different group since wooden branches help to divide the space on the table. TRIPTOD.COM

Moreover, the leg of the table randomly stands and those who sit down can freely choose a place where to sit. The grove where trees are randomly standing brings a deeper impression from front to back than actually it is. “...Our task in designing this house was to accommodate a family on a sloping site – long and relatively narrow and incorporating an existing Victorian house...”

17

18

PROJECTS / Interior Design

Whilst the accommodation requirements and the shape, orientation and terrain of the site largely determined the formal arrangement of the house, the articulation of the fabric and the detail design were generated from both the passive solar methods employed and more significantly, our Client’s request that the architecture reflect their extensive time living in various parts of Asia.

19

PROJECTS / Interior Design

We were conscious of avoiding a literal or thematic depiction of ‘Asian’ architecture, so the connections are subtle and characterised by a minimal palette of colour, texture and form and an attempt to reference the qualitative aspects of Asian architecture rather than obvious visual representations. The double courtyard form utilised in this project resulted from a response to the site context and programmatic imperatives. The courtyard typology is a well-established method of overcoming poor orientation and dealing with long and narrow sites utilising passive solar principles. In this house, the twocourtyards facilitate gradations of privacy, emphasises our intentions with respect to zoning, deal with the problem of swimming pool fences and supports our desire for an interior/exterior enfilade through the site.

The best sustainability benefit to this house is delivered by the courtyards in that passive solar principles of northern orientation and cross ventilation can be afforded to nearly all zones of the house. When coupled with thermally efficient building fabric, photo-voltaic energy plant and on-site water storage, the house achieves a good outcome for the environment. Structural and Civil Engineering enabled us to incorporate both the swimming pool and water storage into the fabric of the building such that the external areas could realise their potential through collaboration with a Landscape Architect. That the house functions effectively for a family with frequent guests and supports both family life and individual privacy is a satisfying outcome for us. The significant achievement however, is the unexpected narrative that the house offers once through the front door. There is a sense of space unfolding and the suggestion of more at every turn. There is also a quietness in this house, a stillness and sense of retreat from the city – perhaps the most essential link to Asia.

The owners of a forested property wanted a quiet space to observe the surrounding nature. A naturalized understory leads to a visually kinetic approach ramp that contrasts to the subtle interior. Entry to the hut is through an obscured door detailed like the cedar walls. Inside an oversized window opposite the entrance immediately pulls the view back outside to a composed view of mature trees. Adjacent to this is a miniature tea cabinet. A raised platform in the main space supports three tatami mats. The location along the north pond edge allowed the development of several effluvial sensations. Throughout the day water reflections are projected onto the soffit. The roof channels rainwater to a central spout over the pond. A horizontal window in the tatami room frames a meditative fragment of water. The floor of glossy ebonized birch has the sensation of a deep still pool - the grass tatami mats become an island within an island. The result is an interior volume that is protective and serene but alive with subtle energy.

Born and based in United Kingdom, 38 year old artist creates simple but manipulated worlds by using vintage posters and magazines or printed ephemera, aiming to give a nostalgic impression as well as a universal implicit on today’s problems. Strictly avoiding to use Photoshop or other digital medium on his works, brief editing on the collages regenerates an abstract scene which express the idea behind in a concise and humorous dialog. Besides his sold works which can be found in Saatchi Gallery in London, and exhibitions that he participated across the world, Joe Webb’s artwork was shared by hundred thousands of people on numerous online platforms, getting recognized by today’s internet viewers, in a fast and viral way.

ARTICLES / Introducing an Artist

Webb expresses his idea behind his artwork with these words: “I started making these simple hand-made collages as a sort of luddite reaction to working as a graphic artist on computers for many years. I like the limitations of collage...using found imagery and a pair of scissors, there are no Photoshop options to resize, adjust colors or undo... I suppose I’ve become fairly anti-technology... although I now promote my art on websites, own an iPhone and use Facebook...It’s confusing, I wish I had been born 100 years ago.” What is intriguing about the work is the narrative aspect of the images, lifting the lid on problematic and upfront pictures by reimagining different eras altogether in a graceful manner without paying too much attention on color schemes and using them in the way they are. Joe Webb’s works can be visited in Saatchi Gallery, London and his latest works and news can be followed from his official website.

Patmos was initially colonized by Dorian and the Ionian Greeks. During the Roman Empire period, like other Aegean islands, Chora was also used as an exile spot for political prisoners. Controlled by many other empires throughout the history, most of the wealthy families built fine houses around the area, which managed to survive to the present day. Easily recognized by the white exterior walls and bright blue ornaments, narrow streets of Chora represents a historical exotic ambience besides the touristic value of the crystal clear Agean sea and traditional Greek culture.

At an early age, Noguchi’s artistic talents were already discovered by his family. Extensively travelling between United States and Japan throughout his life, Noguchi gained an internationalist design view, avoiding to follow or be a part of any specific art movement. Influenced by many sources and cultures, Noguchi managed to generate a new approach for design, integrating various craftsmanship techniques and impacts into each other. This ideology caused a wide range of material utilization in his works, forming a bold and subtle outputs which brought him an international recognition in 1938 with the large scale sculpture commissioned by the Associated Press building.

The Hospes Palacio is offering an exceptional accommodation inside a converted 19th century palace, located right in the middle of historic center of Granada. Among other Hospes hotels that are located in most of the cities of Spain, Los Patos stands out with the stunning blend of stylish contemporary architecture with vernacular Moorish style, gently integrated into each detail of the entire project. Major elements of the existing building is retained, such as the marble grand staircase or the exterior faรงade while all 42 rooms in different styles and sizes are entirely designed with a vivid Spanish-Iberian flavor with glamourous details. The guestrooms and suites in both buildings are offering modernist comfort at its best, featuring many other facilities within.

“The interior reflects the desire to highlight the building’s original proportions, integrating them with a new, distinctive identity of multicultural design. White or black coconut leather is used throughout, combined with silver and stainless steel details. Light materials and shades are added to weightless textures of wood and stone, fitting in perfectly with the symmetrical compositions of the rooms.” As Hospes design team express their approach on the Los Patos project. While the Moorish garden located right next to the main building, is meticulously designed as the original landscape to reflect the history and Andalusian botanic culture, Hospes Palace offers great tastes in the Senzone restaurant, bringing all the vernacular flavors of Granada all together in one place.
