Nagel Know How: 7th Grade Schoology Session: The 7th Grade Schoology session is meant to introduce students to the application. The goals and content for the session are listed below. You may choose to introduce the content in a way that is most comfortable to you. GOALS By the end of the session students should be able to: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5)

CONTENT 1) Provide students with a brief overview of the purpose of Schoology and the difference between Schoology & ProgressBook: Schoology is an online learning management system for students, parents, and teachers that is aimed to promote student engagement, communication, collaboration, and increased access to course materials. On Schoology you will find the following: • • • • • •

Homework Assignments Electronic Dropbox for Homework Assignments Team Information & Events Upcoming Classroom Events & Assignments Course files and handouts Classroom Discussions

ProgressBook is an online grade book where you will find the following: • • • • •

Course Averages Individual Assignment Grades Missing Assignments Course Schedules Report Card and Interim Grades

In summary, ProgressBook is used to check your grades on assignments, class averages, and view your Interims and Report Cards, whereas Schoology will be accessed to see team information and homework assignments, handouts, class discussions and other resources that pertain to individual classes. *Optional: Show the Schoology Intro Video located at www.schoology.com

2) Direct students to the login link for Schoology: To Log into SCHOOLOGY:


1. Using any Web Browser, go to the Nagel Homepage: www.foresthills.edu/nagel 2. Locate and click on the LINKS button on the Right side of the page.

3. Click on the NMS Schoology Icon: 4. Select “Nagel Middle School� from the drop-down menu. 5. You will be requested to enter a Username & Password. To gain access to your account please enter the following: Student Login:

Username: firstnamelastname Password: "FH"+Student Number+Birth Month+Birth Day Example: Name: Joe Smith Student Number: 123456 Birthday: Jan 31, 1990 In this example, the Password would be: FH1234560131 *Students can also log into the www.schoology.com site or Schoology App using their e-mail address and their FH Password. * Students may not see all courses during initial login. They will only see the courses for which teachers have manually enrolled them.

3) Provide students with an overview of the home page (menu to left, recent activity, upcoming events, etc):


Recent Activity: In the center of the homepage you will see the recent activity. Recent activity is a stream of information that includes any item that involves you or your courses. Below are the kinds of information that appear in the Recent Activity feed. Academic Information -Course updates and announcements -Aggregated sentences when new content is posted (e.g. 3 assignments, 2 topics, and 1 event were posted for English 101) Social Information - “Teasers” for blog posts that you or your subscribers post. - Group updates Upcoming Events: The Upcoming Events feed acts as a simplified planner, displaying events and assignments by date. Days will only be displayed when there is a corresponding event or an assignment. Menu to the Left: - Remind Students we will be using ProgressBook for grades. - Have students explore the Calendar & explain how it is connected to the upcoming events (Anything they enter on their calendar, or their teacher enters for a course [HW Assignment, test, etc.] will show up under the upcoming events feed on the main page. - Have students click on “Courses” from the left menu 4) Guide Students through the Course Page * REMEMBER: Students will only have courses to view if teachers have enrolled the students *See Notes on the following page explaining various components of the course pages

5. *Change Notifications & Account Settings*: - Have students click the drop-down arrow to the right of their name in the upper right-hand corner: Under the Notifications screen, students can customize the e-mails and text messages they receive for various courses. (This is important, otherwise their Inbox will be flooded with e-mails from Schoology.) Under the Account Settings, students can connect their account to Google Docs. Have them click “Connect” next to the Google icon. Students will need to sign into their Forest Hills Google Apps account to set the connection. This will enable students to submit Google Docs to the Dropbox. 6) Please stress the importance of checking Schoology daily for assignments, updates, etc. Also remind students this is an important tool if they are absent.

OPTIONS: 1)

If your team has created a Team Page or Group in Schoology, you may want to introduce this to students at this time. 2) If your team has decided to have students enroll themselves in any courses, you may want to have students add these Courses via the Course Access Codes (*If you choose this option, make sure you have all codes from your team teachers.) 3) Exploration: Have students explore Schoology as individuals, as pairs, or in groups. After some time, have students share with one another something new they discovered. Have students share their discoveries with the entire class. 4) Students may spend time updating their Schoology profile.


Explanation of various components of the COURSE page: Course Topics You can think of topics similar to folders or lessons that can contain course materials. Topics are an optional way for instructors to organize their content inside of the Materials area. Topics can be distinguished by the yellow folder icon next to their name. To access a topic, click on the name. Inside of a topic, you will find an assortment of the other types of course materials: 1. Assignments 2. Online Tests/Quizzes

3. Files/Links 4. Discussions

When an instructor uses topics, they intend for you to view content in a specific order. Because of this, you will find a Begin Topic button in the upper right. This will allow you to play through the topic, itemby-item, in the order they are intended to be viewed. Course Assignments Assignments are items that can be graded by instructors. Each assignment can have a Dropbox, where you can submit files that instructors can grade and leave comments on. Assignments can also be given a Due Date, which will automatically display the assignment in your personal calendar and upcoming area. There is also a Comment area for you and other students to ask questions. Course Test Quiz Interactive Tests/Quizzes can be created by your instructors for you to take online. These can have an assortment of the following question types: 1. True/False 4. Short-Answer/Essay 6. Matching 2. Multiple Choice Questions 3. Ordering 5. Fill in the Blank After you take a test/quiz, your grades will appear in the Grades/Attendance area. Tests/quizzes can be timed or allow multiple submissions. Each test/quiz will vary depending on the instructor and course. How do I view my past submissions? For some tests/quizzes, your instructor may allow you to view your past submissions. If this is the case, you will see an additional tab called My Submissions. This will show you a list of all your submissions, with links on the right to View Assessment. Course Files Links Files that have been added to your course can appear inside of Topics or in the Files/Links area of the Materials Index. Typical file types can be viewed in your browser without having to download the file. These include: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Course Discussions Discussions are interactive conversations that you, your classmates, and your instructor can participate in. Each discussion has threaded commenting, allowing you to respond to any post by another student. For some courses, instructors may choose to moderate the posts. This will require a course admin to approve each post before it can be seen. When this is turned on, your posts will not be immediately visible to other students. Course Media Albums Media albums can contain photos, videos, and/or audio files. Each item within an album can be commented on by. Your instructor can also tag you and your classmates into specific photos. Course Updates The Updates area of the course profile is used by instructors to create announcements for your course. Updates are meant to be brief messages (there is a 400 character limit). When updates are posted, they will appear in the Updates section of your course as well as on your homepage. Each update that is posted can be commented on by you and your classmates. By default, only course admins can post Updates. For some courses, instructors may choose to allow students to post updates.
