Garamond
Link
Claude Garamond came to prominence in the 1540s, first for a Greek typeface he was commissioned to create for the French king Francis I, to be used in a series of books by Robert Estienne. The italics of the most contemporary versions are based on the italics of Garamond’s assistant Robert Granjon. When Claude Garamond died in 1561, his punches and matrices were sold to Christophe Plantin, in Antwerp, which enabled the Garamond fonts to be used on many printers. In 1621 sixty years after Garamond’s death, the French painter Jean Jannon issued typefaces that had similar characteristics to the Garamond designs, though his letters were more asymmetrical and irregular in slope and axis. Many of the revivals of the Garamond type in the 1900s claim to be based on Jannon’s designs, however the Garamond name stuck. The Adobe Garamond design is considered one of the most versatile fonts available today and certainly one of the most attractive and graceful in print. It is also one of the most eco friendly types to print because the letterforms use less ink than other similar faces. Eye

Futura was neither conceived at Germany’s Bauhaus nor decreed as the quintessence of the design school’s teachings. Paul Renner, Futura’s designer, had no Bauhaus affiliation, although his original sketches embodied the ideologies of the Bauhaus Movement. While the forms of Futura’s capital letters can be traced back to ancient Greek lapidary letters, Renner’s sketches for the lower case were quirky, forced and at times barely recognizable as letters. The Bauer production department reinterpreted his design; the ascenders were redrawn taller than the capitals, and character widths were adjusted to reflect traditional 16th century proportions. Futura’s simple letterforms allow it to be set at surprisingly small sizes with little drop in legibility levels. Futura also works well for short blocks of text copy, captions and pull quotes.

8 COMMON TYPOGRAPHIC DISEASES Various forms of dysfunction appear among populations exposed to typography for long periods of time. Listed are a number of frequently observed afflictions.
TYPOPHILIA
An excessive attachment to and fascination with the shape of letters, often to the exclusion of other interests and object choices. Typophiliacs usually die alone and penniless.
TYPOPHOBIA The irrational dislike of letterforms, often marked by a preference for icons, dingbats, and in fatal cases-bullets and daggers. The fear of the typophobe can often be quieted (but not cured) by steady doses of Helvetica and Times Roman.
A persistent anxiety that one has selected the wrong typeface. This condition is often paired with okd (optical kerning disorder), TYPOCHONDRIA the need to constantly adjust and readjust the spaces between letters. TYPOTHERMIA
The promiscuous refusal to make a lifelong commitment to a single typeface or even to five or six, as some doctors recommend. The typothermiac is constantly tempted to test drive “hot” new fonts, often without a proper license.
