I would like to do something to fill a gap, which I've noticed occurring frequently at work. I work as a swimming teacher and I often find that teachers, especially new ones, struggle to develop certain strokes and fix common issues with strokes. Last year I suggested designing something for the kids to either read or interact with to help them. After talking to Luke I realised that it would be impractical for swimmers to use it effectively without it being on poolside and even then there were a multitude of problems. After having discussions with colleagues and recently going through some new qualifications I realised that it made more sense to address the methods used by the teachers rather than going directly to the kids. My plan is to design a relatively small book (about 40 pages) that addresses difficulties that teachers have in teaching all four main strokes as well as fundamental skills that feed in to them. The book will include straightforward blocks of explanatory text followed by relevant technical diagrams. I will also use bullet point summaries with various bubble suggestions. The idea is that a teacher who is already qualified with experience but struggles with certain areas can read through a simple but thorough guide to their specific issues. I will keep the colour scheme basic using shades of blue for the obvious water connotations. The text should be clear and easy to read and so I’ve decided to use a serif font called Baskerville for the majority of the writing. I instead chose a sans serif font, TeX Gyre Adventor, for titles. The book will be a paperback just off square dimensions allowing for ease of portability, a comfortable fit in the hand for an easier layout with the images and text. The page structure will be designed in illustrator and constructed in InDesign. The technical drawings will be done by hand and edited later in Illustrator. I will also incorporate photo images for the title pages.
