Executive Director’s Message: ‘Irons in the Fire’

I

sn't it ironic: in these challenging economic times, Jazz in AZ is entering into one of the most exciting periods in its 33-year history, with irons in the fire that have tremendous potential for enhancing the jazz scene today and well into the future. Let's start with the new Jazz in AZ Monday Jam Session at the Compound Grill. At the heart of any great jam session is a rhythm section of hard-swinging players with the musical capital to attract top pros and aspiring young jazz musicians. We've got 'em! Thanks to our new collaboration with CG, the Jazz in AZ Monday Jam was launched on December 27th. Co-led by the dynamic duo of Dwight Kilian on bass and Dom Moio on drums, the chordal position in the core band will be filled weekly by a top guest pianist or guitarist, including Armand Boatman, Bill Moio, Mike Kocour, Russ Schmidt and Barb Catlin. The opening set at 7:30 features a concert performance by the trio, followed by the jam session until 10 p.m. Great live jazz begs fine food and drink. The Compound's delectable fresh locally-grown and raised food, all very reasonably priced. The jam is every Monday except the first Monday of each month. We're also swapping the first and second Mondays in February due to Valentine's Day. Enjoy this new happening and make it a Monday destination with family and friends. Next, in collaboration with MIM (the fabulous new Musical Instrument Museum) and its jazz curator/consultant, Marty Ashby, Jazz in AZ recently convened the first-ever meeting of Arizona jazz presenters, marketers and stakeholders to initiate the sharing of assets, experience and strategies for the promotion of jazz through cooperative booking practices, strategic branding for jazz, and utilizing new technologies to build a greater audience. Some 40 enthusiastic participants attended, with Jazz in AZ taking the lead to establish the nation's first chapter of the Jazz Forward Coalition to be based here in Arizona! The Jazz Forward Coalition is

focused on building, curating and providing tools, knowledge and programming to the jazz music industry for audience and market development. How perfect and how exciting! Thank you Marty Ashby for lighting the fire. But wait, there's more! Thanks to the vision and generous commitment of seed funding by JiA past president Herb Ely and his wife Lorene, we are on the verge of committing to a Jazz Center in the heart of Phoenix's Roosevelt Arts District to become a much needed focal point for jazz in America's 5th largest city. The Center will ultimately be a hip space for public concerts by student musicians, local and visiting pros! Jazz education is also a focus, so expect combocoaching and other group educational activities; private instruction, practice and rehearsal activities. A team comprising board members Celeste Winters, Stu Siefer, Steve Douglas and myself has been actively engaged in the venue development process for more than a year, which included a recent field trip to New Mexico's Albuquerque Jazz Workshop and Outpost Performance Space. Seeing these successes helps to visualize what we can plan in Phoenix.

Existing Jazz in AZ programs and services will continue too, including our 'Jazz in Concert' and 'Catch a Rising Star' series at Kerr; monthly jazz parties at Kaz; 'How Cool is Jazz' programs in scores of elementary schools; dances; in-home concerts; marketing and communications functions to promote jazz through our website, Jazz Notes, press releases; and much more! Your financial support of Jazz in AZ can make a big difference now. Please consider a generous year-end tax deductible donation TODAY! Donate online at www.jazzinaz.org or mail your check, payable to Jazz in AZ, to P. O. Box 2913, Scottsdale, AZ 85252. Thank you! We also offer a variety of planned gift options for the future of Jazz in AZ; so contact any JiA officer, board member, or me to discuss your interest and concern for live jazz. Take action today to assure your legacy for tomorrow. Thank you for your support and wish you a happy, healthy New Year! Sincerely,

Joel R. Goldenthal Executive Director

Dennis Rowland, Extreme Decibel Big Band to roar at Kerr Jan. 12 By Joel R. Goldenthal

F

ormer Count Basie Orchestra vocalist Dennis Rowland and Clark Krueger's Extreme Decibel Big Band will roar into the New Year at the ASU Kerr Cultural Center on Wednesday, Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m. Dennis continues to be a standout in the current music scene. While Dennis has his own style, he is clearly reminiscent of his key mentor, the legendary Joe Williams, who was one of his predecessors in the Count EVENT Basie Orchestra. When Krueger's band plays Dennis's vintage charts and responds to his Basie-imbued leadership as front man, the music soars to a world-class level. Dennis clearly channels all he's got into bringing out the best from the soloists and ensemble. Concert-goers can expect to hear timeless Basie hits, as well as songs associated with Sammy Davis, Jr. and 'The Chairman of the Board,' Frank Sinatra.” Born in Detroit, Dennis Rowland has used his residency in Phoenix to branch out into acting and community service work. In 2007, Dennis was inducted into the prestigious Herberger Broadcast and Performing Arts Hall of Fame in recognition of his talent and community service. He continues to sing locally and tour both nationally and internationally,

including last year ’s high-profile appearance on Riverwalk Jazz with the Jim Cullum Jazz Orchestra at Club Pearl in San Antonio (which was broadcast nationally on radio); and overseas appearances with the Big Band Jazz Terrazzo in Spain, Estonia Dream Big Band and Ken Nosia Big Band in Russia. Dennis has been a Concord Jazz Records artist since 1995 and has a number of releases, including “Now Dig This”, “Get Here” and “Rhyme, Rhythm and Reason”. Dennis recently

released a Live at Kazimierz CD, which will be on sale at the concert. Formed in 1987, the Extreme Decibel Big Band is one of the Southwest's longest running big bands. The 17-piece group, lead by trumpeter Clark Krueger, features many of the Valley's top musicians and boasts a repertoire of more than 300 arrangements, including classic and contemporary big band charts. As a “Nearly Native” Arizonan, Clark has been active in the Arizona Music scene for over 30 years. He is a former member of Young Sounds of Arizona and majored in music education at NAU, where he was a featured soloist with the NAU wind ensemble and the NAU Jazz ensemble in addition working as a student assistant to the Director of Jazz Studies. In his “spare” time, Clark owns and operates a successful financial planning firm in Glendale and he is a volunteer consultant to Jazz in AZ in the area of Planned Giving. This show is part of the 'Jazz in Concert' series produced by Jazz in Arizona and the ASU Kerr Cultural Center, and is made possible by generous support from the Jazzbird Foundation. Tickets are $24 for general admission and $29 for reserved seats ($4 discount for JiA members) and are available at the ASU Kerr box office, 480-596-2660, all Ticketmaster locations and online at www.jazzinaz.org.

Margo & Armand: Together Again at Jan. 23 JiA Party By Joel Goldenthal

O

nce again, Jazz in AZ brings together two synergistic dynamos of the valley's jazz scene for the monthly party on January 23, 2011 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Kazimierz World Wine Bar in Scottsdale: vocalist Margo Reed and the Armand Boatman Trio with Dwight Kilian on bass and Dom Moio on drums. “ Margo and I have that certain alchemy with each EVENT other,” says Boatman. “I have performed with and accompanied many vocalists during my career; but Margo is really something special. I love her passion for her music, her interpretation of the lyric and the over-all feeling that she incorporates into each song she performs. I especially love her unpredictability; she is always changing things that keep the musicians on their musical 'toes.'

“Margo is a phenomenal talent and totally delightful to work with. She comes to sing; she is a giver; she swings! She is dedicated to her art form. She is a professional. The folks at this JiA party are going to hear a little bit of everything from Margo and me. They are going to hear some "evergreens' that we used to do together. They are going to be swing, pop, and they

are going to be 'burning' and swinging. It's going to be an exciting performance.” Armand has been a powerful influence on the Valley's jazz scene since relocating here from the northwest for a steady engagement at the Doubletree Inn's Boojum Tree in the early ‘70s. He currently writes, arranges and leads the 'Be Bop Revolution' as well as the Boatman Jazz Quartet (BJQ). “Like Margo, I come to play. I don't care what gig it is or where it is. I feel it's all about attitude. I thrive on it!” There will be no doubt about their intentions when these two dynamos of our jazz scene combine talents at the January 23rd Jazz in AZ party. Kazimierz World Wine Bar is a casual venue with great food, wine and beverages, located at 7137 E, Stetson Drive, Scottsdale. Jazz in AZ Party admission to the public is $10 (FREE if you join Jazz in AZ at the party). JiA member rates apply. Margo Reed and Armand Boatman, together again; don't miss it!

The Valley's Jazz Divas set for 2 big nights at Kerr Feb. 2 & 3 By Joel R. Goldenthal

W

hat started out nine years ago as a onenight Jazz in AZ concert has evolved into a much-anticipated annual happening: The Valley Jazz Divas Concert, starring vocalists Margo Reed, Nancy Gee, Delphine Cortez and Sherry Roberson. The Divas show is part of the Jazz in AZ-Kerr “Jazz in Concert” series made possible by generous support from the Jazzbird Foundation. Concerts take place at 7:30 p.m. on EVENT Wednesday, February 2nd and Thursday, February 3rd at the ASU Kerr Cultural Center in Scottsdale. Tickets are $24 for general admission, $29 for reserved seats and are available at the Kerr Box Office, 480596-2660, and online at jazzinaz.org. Jazz in AZ members may take advantage of a $4 per seat discount. The Divas Concert is like four sensational concerts for the price of one. Each of the singers has her own unique style, from overall presentation to the way she phrases and feels time. It's a study in contrasts. Whether you are a jazz aficionado, familiar with the traditions of Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Carmen McRae, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson and other jazz greats carried on by these four divas, or you just love tunes from The Great American Songbook by the likes of the Gershwins, Cole Porter and Duke Ellington, you will be royally entertained by the world-

class deliveries of Nancy, Margo, Sherry and Delphine (left to right in photo above). Margo Reed is widely regarded as the icon of Valley female vocalists, having paved the way for the musical Reed family to relocate here in the mid-'70s from Kankakee, Illinois. Margo, a recipient of the Jazz in AZ Lifetime Achievement Award, is known for her “in-the-pocket” swing, as well as “lovemushy” ballads, profound message songs and lowdown blues. Sherry Roberson came to the Valley in 1959 and has a long history of club and concert performances in the Valley, as well as stints in Istanbul and Bangkok. Sherry brings a blues orientation to the mix, along with a freight train-like drive and a propensity to “play with time,” moving phrases ahead or behind the beat, as the spirit moves her. Nancy Gee, whose voice has been described as “velvet,” reflects strong Sarah Vaughan influences. She moved to the Valley from Connecticut in the mid-'80s and landed a 16-

year steady gig in Mary Elaine's at the new Phoenician Resort. She sang on her off-nights at the Nucleus Nuance nightclub in Los Angeles and was honored to perform a tribute to Sarah Vaughan arranged by Quincy Jones with the 65-piece Southwest Orchestra in L.A. Delphine Cortez hails from Indiana and performed at top clubs on Chicago's famous Rush Street before coming to the Valley in the mid-'80s to cover a gig for Margo. Delphine continued to get booked by top Valley restaurants and clubs and never went back home! Her diverse repertoire and unique arrangements range from standards and bossa novas to jazz interpretations of “Moondance,” “The Look of Love,” “Put Your Records On” and other pop songs. While you may have seen these ladies perform in a nightclub or restaurant setting, hearing them together in a concert setting is an entirely different experience not to be missed. Supporting the Divas in concert this year is the rhythm section of Joel Robin on piano, Bob Lashier on bass, and Cleve Huff on drums, with the addition of Jerry Donato on sax, who adds harmonic dimension and another solo voice to the show.. This show is part of the 'Jazz in Concert' series produced by Jazz in Arizona and the ASU Kerr Cultural Center, and is made possible by generous support from the Jazzbird Foundation. Tickets are available at the ASU Kerr box office, 480-596-2660, all Ticketmaster locations and online at www.jazzinaz.org.

Dave Cook celebrates Black History Month at JiA Party Feb. 20 By Joel Goldenthal

EVENT

T

he annual month-long celebration of African-American achievements known as Black History Month was created in 1926 by Harvard scholar, Dr. Carter G. Woodson. As with contributions African Americans have made in many other fields, it would take a lifetime to pay tribute to all of the great

contributions made to American culture by African American musicians, singers and composers. They continue to be influential, not only in the musical realm, but throughout the fabric and culture of America. AfricanAmerican contributions are primarily responsible for the birth of blues and jazz, America's original art form. It is in the spirit of appreciation and recognition that Jazz in AZ proudly celebrates Black History Month at The Jazz in AZ Party on Sunday, Feb. 20, 3-5 p.m. at Kazimierz World Wine Bar, featuring the music and anecdotes of legendary valley drummer and jazz historian, Dave Cook. Joining Cook in the band are long-time musical friends Big Jim Henry-trumpet and Charles Lewis-piano, along with Andrew Gross-sax and Ted Sistrunk-bass. Cook's fifty-plus-year music career and intriguing family history will make this an afternoon of relevant music and enlightening stories. Among the subjects will be musicians Dizzy Gillespie, Ben Webster, Jimmy

Witherspoon, Jimmy Smith, and the recently departed James Moody, as well as Cook's own family history. (You'll never guess what business the Cook Family has been in for the past one hundred years!) A self-taught drummer, Cook has been in Phoenix since 1959 and is one of the pioneers of the Valley's jazz scene. Cook's playing style is reminiscent of bebop drumgreat Art Blakey, as is his dedication to mentoring and encouraging young players through jam sessions. For a decade, Cook led the popular jam session at the Melody Lounge, followed by a string of jams at venues including Cajun House, Doc's Place and most recently at the Rhythm Room on Monday nights. Cook also leads a variety of musical groups, including "Intensity", a Chicago-style quintet; the 15-piece "Atlantis Big Band;" and a bebop five-piece band called "New Vanguard". Dave Cook and “Intensity” was nominated for and won the 1996 New Times Music Award in the 'Best Jazz' category.
