Since the doors opened at The Nash, Jazz in AZ's new nonprofit education and performance center in the downtown arts district of Phoenix, the venue's been a buzz with performances by jazz luminaries such as Wynton Marsalis, Lewis Nash and Freddy Cole; big bands such as Mesa Community College and Young Sounds of Arizona; and weekly jam sessions that are consistently attracting dozens of student and pro musicians and appreciative audiences. What an auspicious first ten weeks it has been! Our first summer is continuing the promise of becoming the place for jazz in the Valley with a variety of exciting performances and educational activities.

A movement has begun to have a U.S. postal stamp issued in honor of the late “Family Circus” cartoonist Bil Keane, who lived in Paradise Valley for many decades and was a huge jazz fan. Don Z. Miller, a founder and past president of Jazz in Arizona, has joined campaign creator Cindy Zimmerman to pursue the possibility. All is needed is a simple note asking for a stamp to be created to honor this man who made people smile since 1960. Keane died last November at age 89. His son, Jeff, now creates the circle cartoon. The final concert will feature Judy Roberts-piano and Greg Fishman-sax before Judy's return to Arizona. They will be backed by Jeff Hamilton-drums and Chuck Berghoferbass. Sedona Jazz on the Rocks will not be staged next fall, due to “the current economic environment,” according to a statement issued by the festival's board of directors that said the JOR office, phone and website have been shut down to save funds. A festival date for 2013 is to be announced later. More than $30,000 was raised at a recent New York City concert for trumpeter Clark Terry to help with costs not covered by insurance for his home-care following two leg amputations. An additional benefit is being planned in Europe. th Addendum to April 30 International Jazz Day: Alan Light of New York City (my son-in-law) reviewed the concert at UNESCO headquarters for MSNMusic.com, which featured 16 ensembles and remarks by Quincy Jones, who said, “Every country in the world knows more about our music than our kids do." Light's review continued: “Several speakers referred to the similarity between jazz and democracy, or the music's power as 'the sound of freedom.' But jazz and the United Nations have other similarities, as well. They are both sometimes considered a little past their prime, and struggling for contemporary relevance. Hearing these musicians come together for a night, honoring Hancock's accomplishment of an ongoing and formalized celebration of America's greatest musical achievement, was enough to give a little more hope for the future of jazz, and the future of the world.”
3 Musicians' News: Two drummers have relocated to California; Adam Clark went to check out action on the music scene, and Wes Anderson was chosen by audition to perform at Disneyland. That recalls the 1980s and the Side Street Strutters, an ASU student group formed by brothers Rob and Vince Verdi to play early New Orleans, that was hired to play the theme park for nearly a decade, later touring the world with an expanded repertoire. Pianist Andy Margolis is back on the AZ scene and performing at Mastro's City Hall restaurant in Scottsdale. The contacts he made while he was in Los Angeles resulted in film-score writing jobs, including for the biopic “The Wayman Tisdale Story” and a 30-minute web-pic, “Hughes the Force” (an homage to the “Star Wars” series and producer the 1980s movies of John Hughes, such as The Breakfast Club and Weird Science). Margolis played piano during the May 26 opening of the expanded jazz exhibit at the Musical Instrument Museum, and continues to write film scores. Student bassist Ben Jones, who played during the first jam session at Jazz in AZ's The Nash center in downtown Phoenix, is the son of longtime Valley bassist Warren Jones. The all-ages jam continues every Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m.; info at jazzinaz.org or 480-994-0807. Judy Roberts and Greg Fishman were booked for numerous summer gigs in Chicago, including Andy's, Katerina's and Chambers in nearby Niles (often joined by singer Jackie Allen). Judy also played a solo booking in the Signature Room on the 95th, in the John Hancock Center. They will perform again at the Monterey Jazz Festival in the festival grounds, judy on the Avant Grande piano. Dennis Rowland's tour in June performing with big bands included the Tsaritsino Park Music Festival in Moscow, Russia, followed by the LMC Jazz Festival in Istra, Vodnjan, Croatia. Prescott-based drummer Frankie Chavez is on a Far East tour with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, performing in the Philippines and Bangkok, Thailand, including a performance at the Royal Palace for the king of Thailand. Former Phoenix resident Lewis Nash will play drums at the 55th Monterey Jazz Festival, performing with the “Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour 55th Anniversary Celebration” ensemble with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Christian McBride, Ambrose Akinmusire, Chris Potter and Benny Green. Mike Vax plays annual Prescott Jazz Summit preview party for JiA on July 22 at Kaz By Joel Goldenthal Former Stan Kenton Orchestra first trumpeter, soloist and road manager Mike Vax will once again play for the July Jazz in AZ party as a prelude to the Prescott Jazz Summit in August. The sextet features Vax's long-time band mate Jack Petersen on guitar, along with his regular local band members Tony Vaccasax, Joel Robin-piano, Ted Sistrunk-bass and Cleve Huff-drums. The party takes place on Sunday, July 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Kazimierz World Wine Bar, a EVENT casual venue with great food, wine and beverages. Kaz is located at 7137 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale. Admission to the public is $15 (FREE if you join Jazz in AZ at the party). JiA member rates apply. The party will be preceded by the Jazz in AZ Annual Meeting at 2:15 p.m., which has been moved to July to follow the end of the organization's fiscal year. Marion Herrman, 87, a longtime Sedona resident and jazz supporter, died on April 30 during a medical procedure. She was a jazz singer who owned a nightclub with her husband, Al, on Long Island, N.Y., before the couple moved to Sedona in 1981.

Summer JiA party favorite Pete Gitlin returns Aug. 19 By Joel Goldenthal
Once again, Jazz in AZ is presenting guitarist Pete Gitlin for his popular summer cool spin on jazz at the Aug. 19 party from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Kazimierz World Wine Bar. The casual venue at 7137 E. Stetson Drive in Scottsdale is perfect for the occasion! Admission to the public is $15 (FREE if you join Jazz in AZ at the party); JiA member rates EVENT apply. “ A m p l i f i e r, ” G i t l i n ’s second CD, which was released at last year’s party, has meet with great success in the smooth jazz arena. The first single from “Amplifier,” "Lucky in Love", has been ranked in the top 10 on smooth jazz charts around the world, and is currently playing on over 90 radio stations and streaming audio sites. Gitlin’s debut CD, "Full Circle and the Great Temptation" (2008), was named one of the Top 10 smooth jazz CDs of the year in Canada; the single "Sunshine Days", featuring vocals by Valley singer Jodi Light, was No. 1 on the Ambiance Internet jazz charts for four weeks. With production by John Herrera from the Phoenix jazz band Turning Point, “Amplifier” combines jazz, funk and hints of fusion to create a new and exciting
Pete Gitlin sound. "When I first talked to John Herrera about my goals for this CD, I told him I wanted to create the Sgt. Pepper of contemporary jazz,” said Gitlin. “Obviously, that set an almost impossible standard to reach; but my
goal was to use 10 original compositions as very basic tracks, then expand on them using our imaginations and today's infinite production possibilities.” So on “Amplifier,” you'll hear a string quartet and acoustic guitar in one song, an electric sitar in a jazz/country environment in another, and electronic wooshes and swirls in another. "The concept was to create 10 sonic paintings, each very different, but able to hang together in one musical landscape," he explained. Gitlin has been playing guitar and bass professionally since the 1960s, and currently leads the Valley's longest-running jazz jam session at Pita Jungle in Chandler, originating in 2000. His band plays corporate functions and weddings, plus he plays bass in a threepiece rock band called The Allnighters. Gitlin also works as a business development manager for a green energy company out of Boston, and in his leisure time plays golf and rides his road bike. For the Jazz in AZ Party, guitarist Gitlin will be supported by an all-star band anchored by Mario Mendivil-bass and John Herreradrums.
