Ordinary people make extraordinary gifts The mission of Jazz in AZ is to present live jazz and to cultivate the future of jazz through youth education, scholarships and community outreach. The future of jazz is in the hands of individuals whose lives have been enriched by jazz, who want to assure that jazz - America's original art form - is part of American Culture for their children and grandchildren, and who take action to include organizations like Jazz in AZ in their charitable planning.
the direction of Auggie Mendoza, who pens arrangements for Clark Krueger's Extreme Decibel Big Band, former Count Basie Orchestra vocalist Dennis Rowland and others. The event will kick off at 3 p.m. with a swing dance lesson by instructor Dabney Hopkins and his dance partner, Karen. “The Jazz in AZ Big Fall Dance will be a great way to cut loose and get in the mood for the holiday season -- not to mention celebrate our cooler weather,” EVENT says Dan Konzen, president of Jazz in AZ. “More importantly, the dance will help support the operation and programs of Jazz in AZ that provide youth education, scholarships and other projects that keep jazz, America's original art form, alive and well for our children and generations to come,” Konzen explains. During the dance, several “rising star” jazz musicians will have the opportunity to perform as guests in the band. “Playing along side professional musicians is an important step in the development of young players; their playing at this dance is the perfect occasion to showcase these up-and-coming jazz musicians who will carry on America's original art form: jazz,” Konzen concludes. There will be a raffle with great prizes to support Jazz in AZ. A cash bar and special menu will be available. Attendees can dance, just sit and listen to the great music, or both. Dress is casual business or luncheon attire; but swing-era costumes are welcome. Continued on page 7

November - December 2010
News from Out & About By Patricia Myers
Jazz isn't just American history, but is recognized and celebrated as culture, the result of social, economic and political elements. As a music genre, jazz has become one of the world's greatest art forms, born in the USA and globally appreciated. Sometimes I hear, “I don't like jazz because I don't understand it.” What need is there to understand any kind of music, or art form? When musicians play with honesty and expressive passion, the joyous result makes a connection with listeners. Jazz continues to be an active art that offers the excitement of a solo tonight that never will be exactly replicated. Jazz is a vibrant part of everyday life, accessible whenever we choose to listen. Jazz continues to amaze and please me and to enrich my life because of its ever-evolving improvisational core. All one needs to do is to listen and enjoy. Jazz Buzzline: Sunsets and live jazz is the perfect combination in the newly opened Orange Sky Lounge at Talking Stick Resort and Casino. The 15th-floor venue has live jazz every night starting at 5 or 6 p.m., just the right time to view the Valley's incredible sunsets through floorto-ceiling windows. Check the Venues listing for details. Malee's on Main has resumed Monday-night jazz, performed by Judy Roberts and Renee Patrick from 6 to 9 p.m. in the lounge. A decade ago, owner Deirdre Pain featured Monday bookings of pianist Prince Shell and vocalist Helen “Lady J” Jones in this longtime downtown Scottsdale Thai restaurant. A tribute to the late great Nadine Jansen will be staged on Saturday, Dec. 4, in the Jester Room of Pranksters Too in Scottsdale. Rick Wall of Zonal Music Group has booked a four-band night, with Dennis Monce the trumpeter for the tribute. The incomparable Nadine, during her 30 years in the Valley, astounded listeners by playing trumpet with her right hand and piano with her left at the same time, plus her captivating vocals. After Nadine died in August 2009, a scholarship in her name was established with Young Sounds of Arizona, and a posthumous CD
was produced, “The Very Best of Nadine Jansen,” which will be on sale as part of a memorabilia exhibit. Noted Arizonamusic historian John Dixon will emcee that segment of the evening. An impressive 2011 season has been booked by Lakeshore Jazz at Tempe Center for the Arts that features singer Lorraine Feather with pianist Shelly Berg, violinist Regina Carter, Tierney Sutton with Hubert Laws, and a tribute to Ray Charles. The Bad Cactus Brass Band released “Christmas Cactus,” replicating New Orleans jazz Christmas carols. The band will perform its “roots jazz” style for the Jazz in AZ monthly party in April during Jazz Appreciation Month Valley drummer Andy Ziker has released another instructional book-CD, “Drum Aerobics,” with international circulation via the Hal Leonard Corp. The
book is billed as “a 52-week one-exerciseper-day workout program for developing, improving and maintaining drum technique.” It includes a section on drumming health, including topics such as drumming as an aerobic workout and "drum yoga.” Andy says, “The book was a team effort and had contributions from area jazz players. Dan Tomlinson was the studio engineer and played on some the exercises on the example CD. Dave Ihlenfeld (pianist) wrote all 25 songs from the play-along CD (minus drums) and played keyboards. John Willis and Stan Sorenson also played on the play-along recording.” Andy teaches at Linton Milano Music in Mesa and at his home studio in Gilbert. This Riffs column won another writing award in a national competition for personal columns in print media. Final Bar: Steve Batura, 76, longtime Jazz in AZ volunteer, Aug. 19 in Sun Lakes; Buddy Collette, 89, flute-saxclarinet, educator, founding member of Chico Hamilton Quintet in 1955, Sept. 19 in Los Angeles, CA; Marion Brown, 79, avant garde saxophonist, Oct. 18 in Florida.
