JiA Father's Day dance honors John Dawson 9 scholarships awarded to Valley youths By Joel Goldenthal More than 230 listeners and dancers turned out to honor Jazz in AZ benefactor John Dawson, and to enjoy a crossgenerational big-band extravaganza, plus a fashion show, dance lesson and scholarship award ceremony. Opening the third annual event was The Young Sounds of Arizona, an aweinspiring big band of crème-de-la-crème high school musicians who can go toe-totoe with top college and pro bands. Then came a 20-minute swing dance lesson led by Steve Conrad (founder of the AZ Lindy Hop Society) with his special guest dance partner, Carla Hiney (choreographer for season six of “So You Think You Can Dance,” 2009-08 International Lindy Hop Champion, seven-time U.S. Open Swing Dance Champion, Swing Dance Hall of Fame Nominee). After that, it was nearly three hours of swinging dance music from Clark Krueger's thundering Extreme Decibel Big Band, featuring Dennis Rowland's rich voice soaring effortlessly and magnificently above the band. Several student jazz musicians played cameo appearances with the band. Midway through the event, it was time to recognize John Dawson, who was in attendance with family members and

Award in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the Arizona jazz community. Then, Jazz in AZ Education and Scholarship Committee chairman Stu Siefer presented $5,000 in scholarship awards to nine talented students for a variety of uses in their pursuit of further jazz education. These included summer jazz camps, purchase of musical instruments, private lessons and college tuition and expenses — all made possible through Mr. Dawson's generous support. Receiving the scholarships in amounts from $250 to $1000, were David Bernot, Desmond Ng, Vince Kaufmann, Morgan Ambrose, Jacob Sieckman, Richie Ames, Micah Hummel, Chris Light and David Ochoa. In addition to these individual awards, Jazz in AZ will present a check for $1,000 to The Young Sounds of Arizona toward support of the program in its upcoming season. Founded in 1971, The Young Sounds of Arizona is the first and oldest program of its kind in the country. It comprises 40 students from schools in the greater Phoenix between the ages of 14 and 19. All members are selected by audition and considered to be the best young jazz talent in the Valley.

An added feature of this year's dance was a fashion show presented by Matilda's Closet, a vintage attire, accessories and jewelry store in historic downtown Glendale, suggested by JiA board member Beth Dore'. The crowd went wild as a Betty Grable-styled model strolled the dance floor. It was the frosting on the cake of a sensational Father's Day event, all for the benefit of Jazz in AZ and its youth education and scholarship programs, and made possible with the generous underwriting of the Scottsdale Plaza Resort and the John Dawson Foundation.

We have had another great year with many accomplishments, great concerts, a Father's Day dance, and some wonderful in-home parties that we thank you for being a part of. We awarded scholarships to nine talented jazz students, and we have Mr. John Dawson to once again thank for his generous support of the Father's Day Dance, scholarships, the Rising Star Showcase scheduled for July 13 at Kerr, and additional operating support. Our gratitude to Mr. Dawson cannot be overstated. And, the creation of the Lewis NashJazz in AZ Community Center in downtown Phoenix — an education and performance space dedicated to cultivate young jazz musicians and audiences — is on the verge of becoming a reality. Stay tuned! We have exciting news for the coming fiscal year with a new board of directors and new membership classifications. We would like to welcome the following officers: president-Dan Konzen, vice president-Steve Douglas, treasurer-Susan Dwyer and secretary-Lorene Ely. We would also like to welcome the continuing and new Jazz in AZ directors: Beth Dore', Larry Goldstein, Dmitri Matheny, Doug Mayes, Dennis Rowland, Stu Siefer and Celeste Winters, as well as our new associate directors: Steve Conrad, Gary Doyle, Herb Ely, Joel Goldenthal, Kathleen Konzen, Jeff Libman, James Marovich, Mike Simonyi and Duncan Stoutner. We also have new membership levels and will announce them at the annual meeting in July, but the sneak preview of the levels is as follows: Jazz Youth, Jazz Fan, Jazz Contributor and Jazz Supporter. We have also created a Jazz Sustainers Circle with the following levels: Jazz Aficionado, Jazz Patron, Jazz Benefactor and Jazz Maestro. We are excited with the new levels and feel they are much more in line with the vision and feel of Jazz in Arizona. We are still recognizing Lifetime Members, but are no longer offering that level. Also new, the Jazz in AZ Annual Meeting has been moved to the third Sunday in July, preceding the regularly scheduled monthly party. The reason for moving the Annual Meeting from its former time in the spring is that it will now follow the end of our fiscal year (June 30), and is now better positioned as an informational meeting to report on the year just ended, and to state our goals for the coming year. This is not a voting meeting. We welcome all members and the public to attend. As always, we are always looking for passionate and motivated volunteers to serve on various committees. If you are interested in becoming an ambassador of Jazz in Arizona, please email Lorene Ely at lorene.ely@jazzinaz.org. Again, take notice of our new directors who are wearing their gold/bronze name badges at the events. News from Out & About By Patricia Myers

Jazz Buzzline: Devon Bridgewater, violinist-trumpeter-leader of Nuance, presented a paper on “The Jazz Scene in Phoenix” at the annual Arizona Historical Society Convention. Various papers were presented on topics relating to Arizona history, according to longtime Jazz in AZ member Ted Cunningham, who attended the event in Yuma. Bridgewater wrote a slide-illustrated program with photos of Prince Shell, Charles Lewis, Keith Greko, Dave Cook and others from the 1950s-60s. He also referenced early Phoenix-area jazz venues including The Band Box, Birdcage, Arbors, Green Gables, Riverside Ball Room and Century Sky Room. The paper was researched for Bridgewater's ASU history doctoral project. Two jazz studies departments have new directors: Paul Brewer will be at Mesa Community College, replacing Barb Catlin, who is moving to the Los Angeles area; Eric Rasmussen moves into Brewer's position at Scottsdale Community College. Due to scheduling conflicts, Rasmussen resigned as director of Young Sounds of Arizona; sponsoring Phoenix Musicians Union selected Vince Wedge as the new leader of the two all-star high school big bands. Internationally acclaimed drummer Lewis Nash performed a week in May at the Iridium in New York City with pianist Cedar Walton, saxophonist Javon Jackson and bassist Peter Washington; New Yorker magazine described it as “mainstream elegance.” A few weeks later, when the Phoenix native performed with the Joe Lovano Quartet at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, the New Yorker noted that “the horn-heavy group gathers strength from the sleek drum work of Lewis Nash.” Absolutely! Tenor saxophonist Lucas Pino has been on the move since earning his master's degree from the Juilliard School of Music, after gaining a bachelor's degree from the New School in New York City. He will tour Australia with the Carl Allen, and also perform in Portugal. Lucas has been performing with a band at the New Poland Club in Manhattan, which has California gigs booked this summer.

Pianist-composer Angelica Sanchez, a past winner of a Jazz in AZ scholarship and member of Young Sounds of Arizona, was interviewed on NPR's Weekend Edition (KJZZ, 91.5 fm) on May 14. The segment related to her new CD of original compositions that feature a toy piano, “A Little House” for Clean Feed, her third issue on the label. She also will perform in Lisbon, Portugal, in August with Wadada Leo Smith's Organic ensemble. After attending Arizona State University, she and her husband, saxophonist Tony Malaby, a Tucson native, relocated to New York City in 1994. Both lead clinics and perform in New York clubs and East Coast festivals. Northern Arizona drummer Frankie Sanchez was booked for a June tour of Mexico with the Glenn Miller Band. Musicians' News: Among the Monterey Jazz Festival performances Sept. 16-18 will be a Hammond B3 Blowout of the Joey DeFrancesco Trio with NEA Jazz Master Bobby Hutcherson and the Wil Blades Trio. Returning to the Courtyard Stage will be Judy Roberts on the Yamaha AvantGrand and Greg Fishman on saxophone; montereyjazzfestival.org. DeFrancesco's trio also is booked for the Aug. 6 Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island, newportjazzfest.net (see Calendar). He toured Europe in June and part of July, and in September will play the Iridium in New York City with guest guitarist Larry Coryell. Roberts will be in Chicago from July through early September, reportedly booked seven nights a week in various clubs, just as she is here. She and Fishman also will perform Sept. 14 at the weekly Sunset Jazz at Newport events in Newport Beach Calif. During the summer months, pianist-vocalist Danny Long will be joined at Remington's by bass-guitarist Neal Seroka on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, plus saxophonist Tony Vacca continuing on Tuesdays, and Trishelle Long on Fridays (see Venues). Saxophonist and KJZZ late- night jazz host Paul Anderson has released his “Moving Forward” CD that includes three tracks featuring Joey DeFrancesco on

JAZZ NOTES organ. The album was recorded at Clarke Rigsby's Tempest studio; the 11 tracks include four live performances with Mike Howard and Royce Murray. Saxophonist Jeremy Lappitt can be heard this summer at Boston's in Tempe, Thursdays (an all-ages jam session), Fridays and Saturdays, with Matt Williams-piano-vibes, Jacob Lauxmanguitar, John Sims-bass and Wes Anderson-drums (see Venues listing). Lappitt was last year's winner of DownBeat's 33rd Annual Student Music Awards for “Best Jazz Arrangement, Undergraduate College.” He then auditioned and became the lead alto player in the 2010 Disney All-American College Band. He was awarded a full talent scholarship at Arizona State University, where he played with the ASU Dixie Devils and other student bands. Two more Tempe all-age jam sessions are active this summer: The newest is at The Fixx, led by Caleb Veazey-guitar, Branson Nejame-piano, Jerome Salazarbass and Kevin Phillips-drums. The other is continuing at Robbie Fox's Public House, but moved to Sunday, led by Jeff Libman-guitar, Andrew Schiller-bass and Ryan Anthony-drums (see Venues listing). Meanwhile, Pita Jungle's Thursday jam in Chandler continues, led by Dave Ihlenfeld-piano, Pete Gitlin-guitar-bass and Gerry Reynolds-drums. Vocalist Sherry Roberson's new CD “My Shining Hour,” was recorded with her five colleagues at the Sirocco Club (trumpet, sax, rhythm section) in Bangkok, Thailand. The 12 songs include “Satin Doll,” “Bye Bye Blackbird,” “How Long Blues,” “Take the 'A' Train,” “Lullaby of Birdland” and the title track. Bassist-vocalist Michael Reed returned to Telluride, Colo., for a week's gig at the Fly Me to the Moon Saloon during the June 16-17 Bluegrass Festival. That club always was the hot-spot during the annual Telluride Jazz Festival (Aug. 57 this year), when Margo, Michael and Girley Reed were living in the mountain town (1990-93); Francine and Bucko also would arrive to perform in clubs. This Riffs column again has won a writing award in a state competition for informational columns. Mike Vax plays annual Prescott Jazz Summit preview party for JiA on July 17 at Kaz By Joel Goldenthal

Former Stan Kenton Orchestra first trumpeter, soloist and road manager Mike Vax will once again play for the July Jazz in AZ party as a prelude to the Prescott Jazz Summit in August. The sextet features Vax's long-time band mate Jack Petersen on guitar, along with his regular local band members Tony Vacca-sax, Joel Robin-piano, Ted Sistrunk-bass and Cleve Huff-drums. The party takes place on Sunday, July 17, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Kazimierz World Wine Bar, a casual venue with great food, wine and beverages. Kaz is located at 7137 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale. Admission to the public is $10 (FREE if you join Jazz in AZ at the party). JiA member rates apply. The EVENT party will be preceded by the Jazz in AZ Annual Meeting at 2:15 p.m., which has been moved to July to follow the end of the organization's fiscal year. It will be an informational meeting; members and the public are welcome to attend.

Currently, Vax leads two big bands: The Mike Vax Jazz Orchestra, with musicians from famous big bands such as Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Duke Ellington, Clark Terry, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Cab Calloway, Ray McKinley and Tex Beneke; and The Stan Kenton Alumni Band, comprised totally of

alumni from the 1952-1978 Stan Kenton Orchestra. “This band doesn't try to be the Stan Kenton Orchestra, but is carrying on his tradition of dedication to creative music and to jazz education,” says Vax. The band tours

the United States every other year. To commemorate Kenton's 100th birthday, the band will be making its first-ever appearance in Phoenix later this year at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix on October 21; tickets are on sale now at www.themim.org Both bands conduct educational workshops in high schools and universities from coast-to-coast, and are supported by Friends of Big Band Jazz, a nonprofit organization that also awards scholarships to promising young musicians. “Our goal is to play meaningful music, talk about the importance of the jazz heritage in America, bring jazz music to young people and to offer our audiences a relaxed, entertaining atmosphere.” (More info at www.bigbandjazz.net). News from Afar: Former Phoenix vocalist Sylvia Howard, who has been living in Paris for the past 12 years, will take a break from singing at festivals throughout France to perform four nights in July at the prestigious Lionel Hampton Jazz Club in the Hotel Meridien L'Etoile in Paris. Following her bookings at the French Corner in Phoenix in the 1980s, she went abroad to perform in Italy, Madagascar, Hong Kong, Singapore and Norway. She has written music for the sound tracks of films by French director Cederic Klapishl, including “Peut-etre” and “Ni pour Ni Contre (Bien au Contraire).” Her website is www.sylviahoward.com. Pianist-vocalist Gaynel Hodge relocated several years ago with his wife, Ilona, to Amsterdam, Holland. One of the

founders of the singing group The Platters, he is performing a series of solo shows of vocals and piano in Rotterdam and Schiedam. The show is titled “Words and Music with Gaynel Hodge: The Story Behind the Song 'Earth Angel',” which Gaynel performed at Skye Restaurant during an Arizona visit two years ago. He has five videos on Youtube.com (gaynel Hodge alle tonen), and also is performing a ''Remember When'' program of songs from the World War II era on into the 1970s in nursing homes and neighborhood centers in Holland. The Hodges will attend the North Sea Jazz Festival (where Gaynel sat in with Dr. John in 2006). In more Holland-related news, Bob Corritore and Dave Riley led the Juke Joint Blues Band at the Moulin Blues Festival in May, then left for a weeklong tour of Holland and Belgium. Earlier in the month, at the Blues Music Awards in Memphis, Tenn., Bob's CD, “Harmonica Blues: Bob Corritore and Friends” on the Delta Groove label won Historical Blues

Album of the Year. It featured 15 recordings between 1989-2009, all but one at Clarke Rigsby's Tempest Recording studio in Tempe after the visiting musicians performed at Corritore's Rhythm Room. Summer JiA party favorite Pete Gitlin returns Aug. 21 By Joel Goldenthal Once again, Jazz in AZ is presenting guitarist Pete Gitlin for his popular summer cool spin on jazz at the Aug. 21 party from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Kazimierz World Wine Bar. The casual venue at 7137 E. Stetson Drive in Scottsdale -- with its grazing menu, extensive wine list and assortment of cool EVENT beverages -- is perfect for the occasion! Admission to the public is $10 (FREE if you join Jazz in AZ at the party); JiA member rates apply. This will be a CD release party for Gitlin's second issue, ”Amplifier," on Coming Together Records. His debut CD, "Full Circle and the Great Temptation" (2008), achieved remarkable success for an independently released CD. It was named one of the Top 10 smooth jazz CDs of the year in Canada; the single "Sunshine Days", featuring vocals by Valley singer Jodi Light, was No. 1 on the Ambiance Internet jazz charts for four weeks. With production by John Herrera from the Phoenix jazz band Turning Point, “Amplifier” combines jazz, funk and hints of fusion to create a new and exciting sound. "When I first talked to John Herrera about my goals for this CD, I told him I wanted to create the Sgt. Pepper of contemporary

Pete Gitlin jazz,” said Gitlin. “Obviously, that set an almost impossible standard to reach; but my goal was to use 10 original compositions as very basic tracks, then expand on them using our imaginations and today's infinite production possibilities.” So on “Amplifier,” you'll hear a string quartet and

acoustic guitar in one song, an electric sitar in a jazz/country environment in another, and electronic wooshes and swirls in another. "The concept was to create 10 sonic paintings, each very different, but able to hang together in one musical landscape," he explained. Gitlin has been playing guitar and bass professionally since the 1960s, and currently leads the Valley's longest-running jazz jam session at Pita Jungle in Chandler, originating in 2000. His band plays corporate functions and weddings, plus he plays bass in a three-piece rock band called The Allnighters. Gitlin also works as a business development manager for a green energy company out of Boston, and in his leisure time plays golf and rides his road bike. For the Jazz in AZ Party, guitarist Gitlin will be supported by an all-star band: Dominic Amato on saxophone, Mike Broening on keyboards, Mario Mendivil on bass and John Herrera on drums. Jazz in AZ co-founder Don Miller named 'Jazz Hero' by international group By Patricia Myers Don Z. Miller was named a “Jazz Hero” by the international Jazz Journalists Association at a recent event in Phoenix that interfaced with a live webcast of the 2011 JJA Jazz Awards in New York City that honored achievements in jazz music and journalism. Miller, one of 10 people honored from across the nation, was called “Arizona's impresario of jazz” for his work as an active producer and advocate of live jazz for the past four decades. The local event was hosted by Herb and Lorene Ely, and featured the jazz trio of Jeremy Lappitt on alto sax, Andrew Schiller on acoustic bass and Robert Carrillo on drums. Miller is responsible for independently bringing to Arizona hundreds of worldrenowned stars of the swing, bebop, hard bop and modern eras, in festivals organized for Jazz in AZ, and for 34 years of the annual Paradise Valley Jazz Party since 1978. One of nine co-founders of Jazz in Arizona, a past president and longtime board member, Miller conceived and produced the first Jazz in AZ Phoenix Jazz Festival in 1989 (net profit $19,000). He produced annual jazz festivals for the next three years, in cooperation with Jazz in AZ, presenting a stylistic range from the Lionel Hampton Big Band and the Dave Brubeck Quartet to Spyro Gyra and the Rippingtons, B.B. King, The Tonight Show All-Star Quintet, Louie Bellson Band, and the Clark Terry-James Moody Quintet.

Also for Jazz in AZ, he conceived and produced an ongoing annual “Treasures of Jazz" concert series that brought artists such as Ellis Marsalis, Danny Barker, Bud Freeman, Dave Frishberg and Art Van Damme. Miller was born in 1932 in Suffern, N.Y., and when he was 12, his family moved to Arizona for his father's health. Don is a

In 1953, Don married his college sweetheart, Suzanne Gertz, and they raised two children, Michael and Kathryn, and he has four grandchildren. He was owner of Model Finance Company and KawasakiHarley Davidson of AZ. He is the author of

two non-fiction books and a publisher of music-instruction books. The seeds of both Jazz in AZ and the Paradise Valley Jazz Party were sown by a 1976 series at the University Club of Phoenix that Miller produced in cooperation with the music department of Arizona State University. The series was three weekly sessions of jazz-history lectures by ASU professor Wally Rave that explored various genres of jazz, demonstrated with performances by local professionals and students. The next year, 1977, Miller was the idea-man and driving force behind the first jazz season at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts, working with center manager Bruce McDonald, continuing in that role for several years. (That first season featured Sonny Rollins, Joe Pass, Billy Taylor, Akiyoshi-Tabackin Orchestra and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.) He also organized and led tours to jazz festivals in Europe, as well as producing several Festivals de Jazz in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, Mexico. Don was deservedly proclaimed "Arizona's First Citizen of Jazz" by Gov. Bruce Babbitt of Arizona, and also named "Promotor Turistico" by the State of Sonora Tourism Department in Sonora, Mexico. “Such continuous jazz activism - without parallel in Arizona - - makes Don Z. Miller a true jazz hero,” said Howard Mandel of New York City, president of the Jazz Journalists Association.
