Greg Fishman revisits the genius of Getz at Kerr March 2 By Joel R. Goldenthal x he musical genius of Stan Getz will be celebrated once again in an extraordinary concert event, “Stan Getz Revisited” at the ASU Kerr Cultural Center on Wednesday, March 2nd at 7:30 p.m. The tribute is part of the “Jazz in Concert” series produced by Jazz in AZ and EVENT the ASU Kerr Cultural Center, and made possible by generous support from the Jazzbird Foundation. What makes this event extraordinary is that Greg Fishman is a leading authority on Getz. Greg's performance reflects an incomparable understanding of and reverence for Getz's music. Last season's

celebration of Getz concert was a huge hit, which prompted Jazz in AZ to present the theme again. “Due to the popularity of Getz's biggest hits, like 'Ipanema,' 'Desafinado' and so on, I feel that it's worth repeating some of the songs from last year's concert,” notes Fishman. “However, there will be some surprises this year, like Getz's 1957 arrangement of 'Detour Ahead' from his album with Oscar Peterson, and '500 Miles High,' which Stan commissioned Chick Corea to write for the 1972 album 'Captain Marvel.' In addition, I'm going to feature a few songs with just saxophone and piano, which was Stan's favorite format in his final year of performing (heard on his duo recordings with Kenny Barron),” Fishman explains. Fishman's affinity for Getz started when he was a teenager. “In 1980, when I was 13 years old, I heard the 1957 album 'Stan Getz and the Oscar Peterson Trio' for the first time. It had a profound effect on me. I was inspired to immediately get my horn and try to figure out his solos. That was the beginning of a long and rewarding journey (for me).” That journey included the transcription of more than 100 Getz

Greg Fishman solos, the publication of three transcription books by Hal Leonard, and a number of close encounters with the master. Continued on page 11

Jazz Notes is a free printed publication for members of Jazz in AZ; available online at www.jazzinaz.org; and is published six times per year according to the following schedule.

2011 seems to be a great year thus far. Many people are feeling uplifted and positive despite the challenges that 2009 and 2010 imposed. Jazz in Arizona feels the same way, and we are very excited about some of the announcements and changes that are pending for this year. We have a very supportive volunteer staff that often work without being recognized for all that they do for the organization. If you see them at one of the events or monthly party, be sure to thank them for what they do. We could not offer the concerts and parties that we do without their hard work and dedication to Jazz in Arizona. A quick reminder that April is Jazz Appreciation Month, and we are excited to celebrate this theme with two great shows. Our April party will be on the 10th with Bad Cactus Brass Band celebrating the roots of jazz (preceded by our annual meeting), and the April 6th Kerr concert with Arizona Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, a repertory band playing historically significant jazz works.

News from Out & About By Patricia Myers

E

mail, Facebook and Twitter are increasingly popular methods of 21stcentury communication, but for those who still like sending and receiving “snail-mail,” the good news is that a new jazz stamp will be released on March 22. California artist Paul Rogers said he was inspired by cover art from vintage jazz record albums, many of which captured the music's improvisational quality while revealing its underlying structure. He created the art using ink on paper, then finished it digitally. The stamp features stylized letters of the word “Jazz” in white, set amid abstract figures in orange, black, grey, tan and white who are playing piano, saxophone, trumpet and upright bass. USPS art director Howard Paine said the stamp pays tribute to jazz, America's musical gift to the world, and to the musicians who play it in studios, clubs or concert halls, and on festival stages. The first jazzthemed U.S. stamp series was in 1994, honoring eight jazz and blues artists (Billie H o l i d a y, J i m m y Rushing, Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Mildred Bailey, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Robert Johnson; 29 cents). Also issued that year were separate stamps honoring pop stars Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Al Jolson, Ethel Waters and Ethel Merman, and soon after one for Dinah Washington. I still have a few uncirculated 32-cent stamps from the 1995 Legends of Jazz series, issued with along with a 12-track CD by Warner Bros. that included Phoenix native Lewis Nash playing drums on 10 of the tracks. Those honored that year were Louis Armstrong, Eubie Blake, John Coltrane, Erroll Garner, Coleman Hawkins, James P. Johnson, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Jelly Roll Morton and Charlie Parker. That series was followed in 2008 by a Latin jazz stamp. In 2002, France issued a group of jazz stamps and a folder containing a 12-track jazz CD of jazz musicians, most of them American but valued globally - - Ella Fitzgerald, Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Stephane Grappelli (French) and Michel Petrucciani (French). This new U.S. issue is a “Forever” stamp that remains usable even if the price of postage increases. How perfect, since many of us believe that jazz is “forever music”! Jazz Buzzline: The greatest AZ-jazz opportunity of the year is the 34th annual

Paradise Valley Jazz Party, coming up April 1617. Don Z. Miller, one of the nine founders of Jazz in AZ in 1977, is presenting 18 renowned musicians to perform 16 hours of top-level music in ever-changing combos. I remember sitting in Don's living room 30-plus years ago with other jazz aficionados to discuss the possibility of such an event. It's an amazing production and an enormous amount of work, and Don went fullthrottle to make it happen, and he's still doing it! The party has reserved-seating at cabaret tables for an audience that is attentive and respectful. As much as I love the fun of outdoor festivals, this indoor-party experience is unparalleled for the quality and quantity of live jazz. I've attended every one of the past 33, as well as similar events in California and Florida. A major perq of the jazz party format is talking with musicians in the Green Room between sets. For more info, go to paradisevalleyjazz.com or call 480-948-7993. (See Calendar for details.) A reception at ASU's Kerr Cultural Center honored its addition to the National Register of Historic Places. The Feb. 3 event, the second night of the Divas concerts, featured a printed program and remarks by Colleen JenningsRoggensack, executive director of ASU Public Events and assistant vice president of Cultural Affairs. She lauded the three-year-long grassroots campaign aimed at preserving the two 50-year-old adobe buildings. The campaign gained more than 1,000 supporters around the state, and that activism resulted in assuring that the Kerr will continue as an arts and cultural center, as directed in the will of Louise Lincoln Kerr, who bequeathed it to ASU before her death in 1977. Five members of the Kerr-Lincoln families were present and honored at the event. The eight-member Reed Family joined Charles Lewis as inductees in the Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame in February. Mama Girley and her seven musical children - Tony, Lavergne, Margo, Michael, Francine, Mellody, Bucko - - were honored during the event at the Orpheum Theater in Phoenix. Margo and Michael performed and accepted the awards. Lewis was inducted in 2005, the first jazz musician to be honored among the many pop, rock, country and media stars. Trumpeter Jesse McGuire was a surprise guest with Arturo Sandoval in concert at the Del Webb Performing Arts Center in Wickenburg in February. All those super-high notes were sure to get the coyotes howling. Renewed hope for the value of jazz gained ground when bassist-vocalist Esperanza Spaulding was named “Best New Artist” at the Grammy Awards. She won in a category that included the ubiquitous Justin Bieber and fellow pop performers Drake, Florence + The Machine, and Mumford & Sons.

JAZZ NOTES Musicians' News: World-renowned and Arizona-based jazz organist Joey DeFrancesco performed with 89-year-old saxophonist Frank Wess for a week in February in Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola at Lincoln Center in New York City. Big John Cieslak's new CD features him playing clarinet and tenor sax during various decades, in a trio setting and with big bands in Chicago and Detroit. Some of the 13 tracks feature trumpeter Garry Schauer and drummer Steve Clark, also the late bassist Bob Graham and late pianist Clair Willey. Songs include “Angel Eyes,” “Embraceable You” and “Fly Me to the Moon.” The CD can be ordered by contacting Cieslak at 480-991-0589 or email bigjohnkwik@yahoo.com Margo Reed now has a third album, “The Many Facets of Margo Reed,” produced by her brother, Michael. It includes many tracks from her “Margo: Live” CD (now out of print) that was recorded in 2000 in concert with the Armand Boatman Trio at the Kerr Cultural Center, plus songs from her 1990 cassette album, “Margo.” The new CD is available at her gigs, which now includes the second Wednesday at Remington's with pianist Judy Roberts. Vocalist Vismaya (a k a Ingrid Hagelberg) has new CD, “Songs from My Red Suitcase.” The album is a collection of cabaret-style songs in English, French, Swedish and German, including “Autumn Leaves,” “Mack the Knife” and “La Vie en Rose,” plus several originals. CD release parties will be March 22 at the Compound Grill and March 27 at Kazimierz. Vocalist Sherry Roberson also has issued a new CD, available at her performances, which include Friday nights at DJ's Smokin' Rib Shack in Laveen. Vocalist Renee Patrick has been recording with pianist Judy Roberts for a CD scheduled for release in late March. The two perform Thursdays at Remington's and Mondays at Malee's on Main. Igor and the Jazz Cowboys continue to perform a full schedule around Arizona and out of state, including five events in March, and another April 16 at the Arcosanti Festival that will pay tribute to Stephane Grappelli with the quartet of Igor on bass, Ron Rutowski on fiddle, Billy Parker on mandolin and Big John Cieslak on reeds. Vocalist Khani Cole has a spring tour of Denmark and Germany before returning to perform at the Glendale Jazz and Blues Festival, April 11-12. The reopening of Vocė Ristorante and Lounge is still on hold. Drummer Tom Coulson is hosting a weekly 6-8 p.m. Thursday online jazz and blues radio show (radiophoenix.org), and Walt Richardson hosts a Saturday evening program at the same site. Earshots: Three recent jazz concerts were as satisfying as they were different from each other: Pianist Brad Mehldau's trio played from a diverse repertoire, from Cole Porter to Alice in Chains, in late January at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. The music had multi-rhythm explorations, keeping the audience alert for everchanging variables. Mehldau's classical training Continued on page 15

Dynamic duo of Judy Roberts and Neal Seroka reunite at March 20 JiA Party By Joel R. Goldenthal

T

hose of us who have been long-time Judy Roberts fans have many fond memories of the magical music chemistry between the pianist-vocalist and one-of-a-kind electric bass-guitarist Neal Seroka. That magic will be recaptured when to the two are reunited in a duo performance at the March 20th Jazz in AZ party from 3 to 5 p.m. at Kazimierz World Wine Bar in Scottsdale. General public admission is $10; JiA member rates apply. “Neal Seroka and I met in Chicago in the '70s and started working Rush Street clubs,” says Judy, “Neal on his famous six-string Fender electric bass, me on vocals-piano-keyboards. The very first time I played Phoenix was with Neal, 1974 at the Playboy Club on Central. We loved Arizona, and vowed to come back. Neal was also playing guitar, and we formed a quartet that blended jazz, bebop and bossa. Neal's great ear for textures, and his funky, lyrical EVENT solos helped turn our recordings of songs like 'Señor Blues' into number-one hits. Our three albums for Inner City did well all over the world, and featured several of Neal's catchy compositions. “Neal and I have a unique musical bond, because while jazz is our first love, we are not jazz snobs, and we also enjoy other genres. By the way, we will be performing Phoenix musician Gary Church's composition, "I Always

Get Lucky with You," a country song, at the JiA party! We will also be playing a variety of songs and originals from our albums, as well as current favorites in jazz, bebop, bossa and, of course, The Great American Songbook. We are also planning a tribute to the late George Shearing and will probably perform a song or two from this project at the JiA party.” Judy had been the Valley's preeminent jazz snowbird since the early '70s, including a long association with Timothy's Restaurant in Phoenix from 1982 until 2000. Since moving to the Valley in 2008, Judy has established herself as a full-time player on the local scene, with Remington's as her home base. Judy comes from Chicago, where The Chicago Tribune awarded her the title "Chicago's Favorite Jazz Woman." However, she is recognized as a worldwide jazz star, thanks to the success of her international recordings and concert performances. From the Midwest to Singapore, Judy is known for her fun-loving approach to an eclectic and extensive repertoire, her hardswinging piano playing, her ability to combine lush and sensitive vocals with rapid-fire scat

singing, and her unique ability to communicate with her audience in a relaxed and intimate style. A multiple Grammy nominee, her 20-plus albums and CD releases include the "The Other World," whose hit single "Señor Blues" was number one on the jazz charts and in radio airplay; the album "Trio" with Ray Brown and Jeff Hamilton; the song "Twilight World," co-written with piano diva Marian McPartland (on whose NPR show "Piano Jazz" Judy has guested twice); and her international hit rendition of Dave Frishberg's "My Attorney Bernie." In addition to club and concert appearances, Judy performs at such jazz festivals as the North Sea Festival in Holland, Singapore Jazz Festival and Chicago Jazz Festival, and has been a regularly featured artist on the Joe Segal and Jazz Cruise Line jazz cruises, as well as at the Newport Beach and West Coast Jazz Parties. Count on this being one of the most effervescent Jazz in AZ parties of the year when Judy Roberts and Neal Seroka reunite for an unabashed musical romp. Come early for best seating!

Arizona Jazz Masterworks Orchestra is to preserve, present, promote and perpetuate the rich heritage of jazz music in an all-inclusive manner. . . by nurturing an appreciation and respect for the intelligence, sophistication and scholarship of this ever-evolving art form,” says Forney, founder and artistic director of Arizona Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. “I approach this as a repertory band, like Wynton Marsalis' Lincoln Center band; we play historically significant music from the history of America. "I write for this band in a unique way, not in terms of fundamentals of orchestration, but, more importantly, the music is written specifically for the musicians playing on this band,” Forney explains. “The Arizona Jazz Masterworks Orchestra is an organization of the finest musicians and the most accomplished jazz soloists in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area.” The members are: saxes - Hugh Lovelady,

Fred has also been a salaried musician with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and Phoenix Symphony Orchestras. While Forney may incorporate a few “modernisms” into his arrangements for the AJMO, he clearly holds to a fundamental value of Irving Mills' business plan for the Duke Ellington Orchestra, which was to hold Duke apart from the fads of the swing era. This value certainly contributed to Duke's creativity and uniqueness, as it does to Forney's AJMO. Don't miss this worthy performance in homage to America's greatest cultural achievement: jazz. Bad Cactus Brass Band celebrates Jazz Appreciation Month at April 10 JiA party By Joel R. Goldenthal

A

pril is Jazz History Month, and to celebrate the roots of jazz, Jazz in AZ is presenting Bad Cactus Brass Band, Phoenix's second line band, at its April th 10 party at Kazimierz. The party takes place from 3-5 p.m. and will be preceded by the Jazz in AZ Annual Meeting at 2:15. All Jazz in AZ members are encouraged to attend. The Jazz in AZ Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented during the EVENT party and the winner of the Jazz in AZ Big Apple Raffle will be announced at 5 p.m. Bad Cactus Brass Band burst onto the Phoenix scene in 2009, and the combo's distinctive “take” on New Orleans jazz and funk quickly became a prominent voice in the Valley. The band's joyful energy and second-line traditions have graced many of the area's biggest festivals, parties, concerts and events, and featured on radio and television. They are one of the Phoenix area's busiest performing groups and, together with the Downtown Phoenix Partnership, Bad Cactus has organized the Downtown Phoenix Mardi Gras Parade and festival which takes place on March 4, 2011.

“Congo Square in New Orleans was the only place in the colonial U.S. that black slaves were allowed to congregate, play drums, and dance openly,” explains Benjie Messer, the band's founder and leader. “More

than anywhere else in the U.S., New Orleans was a place where African heritage and culture survived. It was the birthplace of jazz, and it has remained a center of AfricanAmerican cultural life. The music of the marching bands that would follow the first line of officials in New Orleans parades became known as 'second line', and their 'jazzing up' of European marches and dirges, together with ragtime, are the first shoots of jazz that later led to Dixieland, swing and the whole history of jazz to come.

“Bad Cactus Brass Band mixes early jazz standards with Dixieland, gospel, swing, funky new street beats and pop songs, all using the traditional instrumentation of marching drums, sousaphone, trumpets, saxophones and trombones,” Benjie concludes. The full Bad Cactus parade band will be performing at the JiA party on April 10: Kevin Tangney and Steve Limpert on trumpets, Elliot Ventimiglia and Bryan Geraci on saxophones, Jon Dhuse and Benjie Messer on trombones, James Williams on sousaphone, and Wes Anderson and Jesse Yarbrough on marching drums. Bad Cactus Brass Band has released two albums, "Arizona Mardi Gras" and "Christmas Cactus,” and is at work on an album of original material. Don't miss this exciting jazz party and opportunity to participate in Jazz in AZ through the Annual Meeting and Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony. Kazimierz is located at 7137 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale, A hip grazing menu, extensive wine list and full bar are available. The public is welcome. Party admission is $10; JiA membership rates apply.

continued from page 9 Society, is the New Orleans Music Stage, located in the Crowne Plaza San Marcos Resort's Fountain Courtyard. The venue will feature the Sun City Stomperz, the Original Wildcat Jass Band and the 52nd Street Jazz Band for continuous music from 1 to 7 p.m. Saturday. A fun tradition on Saturday will be the 1 p.m. Parasol Walk led by jazz musicians playing “second-line” jazz. The festival's full schedule and information is available at www.Chandleraz.gov/jazz and in

“In 1990, I came home from what was just another day at college, and checked my answering machine, to find that there was a message from Stan Getz, who had heard an audition tape of mine from Stanford University. I called Stan back and told him how his music had changed my life, and that I'd transcribed more than 100 of his solos, and that I was coming out to see him play in Malibu on June 8th. I sat about two feet from the bell of Stan's horn at that concert. His tone was unreal. It's indescribable, even better than on his recordings. “A week later I spoke with Stan on the phone, and he asked if I was going to hear him in New York at Carnegie Hall. I told him that I'd already bought a ticket and booked a flight. He told me that he'd put me on his personal guest list so that I could get backstage. I arrived at Carnegie Hall early enough to hang out with Stan in his dressing room. I handed him a stack of his solos, which I'd transcribed, and I was surprised that he immediately sat down and started to look at them. He was really impressed with them. I told him that I wanted to publish them, and he said that he'd help me. “The day after the concert, Stan was getting ready to leave for one of his final European tours. I told him that I'd love to study with him, and we set a date for later that year. I was going to have two weeks' worth of lessons with Stan! Unfortunately, that never came to pass because Stan became too weak from an illness and he died on June 6, 1991. “After his death, I rededicated myself to studying his music. I realized that I could still have my lessons with Stan, but that they'd be through his recordings. I started to get beyond simply playing the notes of his solos, and started getting into analysis of his solos to try to understand the way in which he thought. The more I would tear apart a solo and reconstruct it, the more certain I was that Getz was truly a musical genius.” Musicians for the Getz tribute on March 2nd will be Fishman-tenor saxophone, Judy Roberts-piano and vocals, and accomplished Tucson musicians Scott Black-bass and Pete Swan-drums. Whether you are a Getz aficionado or new to his music, this concert will be a moving, informative and memorable tribute to one of the greatest musical geniuses of our time.

JAZZ NOTES

March - April 2011

RIFFS, continued from page 6 was evident in his intriguing keyboard soliloquies. A few weeks later, the Count Basie Orchestra was on the same stage for two shows. The Basie book continues to expand and change, although several favorites oldies always are included (“April in Paris” is a given). The band seems to have a new energy now that it's under the new direction of its former drummer Dennis Mackrel. One of the pleasures of this band is to hear musicians who worked with the Count himself: John Williams on baritone sax (starting in 1970), bassist James Leary (1980s) and trombonist Clarence Banks (1984, the year Basie died). The style and content of Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at the Lincoln Center Orchestra has always been progressive, while still swinging in the big band tradition. On stage at the Mesa Arts Center In late February, the aggregation focused during the first half on the leader's fairly new Vitoria Suite. Inspired by Basque country, the segments melded American blues and Spanish folk-flamenco overtones. The second half was filled with new arrangements of Chick Corea compositions. It was evident that Marsalis

writes for specific musicians, as Duke Ellington did, including a lengthy solo for 81-year-old baritone saxophonists Joe Temperley. I was not to hear at least part of Marsalis' new “Swing Symphony” that I'd heard so much about . . . maybe next year. Quotable: Wynton Marsalis, during the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra's concert at the Mesa Arts Center: “When I have nothing to say, I talk; when I have s o m e t h i n g t o s a y, I p l a y. ” Final Bar: Wallace Rave, 74, one of nine founders of Jazz in AZ, first Jazz Notes editor, Jan. 28 in Gold Canyon; Bob “Doc” Haygood, 84, pianist, Jan. 10 in Scottsdale; Kate Heyn, longtime pianist, Feb. 19 in Phoenix; Pat Trapani, 92, trombonist-band leader, Jan. 4 in Cave Creek; George Shearing, 91, pianist-composer, Feb. 15 in New York City; Billy Taylor, 89, pianistcomposer, Jazzmobile founder, Dec. 29, in New York City; Roy Reynolds, 82, saxophonist with Stan Kenton Orchestra from1972-78, Nov. 28, in Calfornia.

Literacy, continued from page 1 three U.S. presidents and the 2001 World Series. He has released three Christian-music albums and a collection of patriotic songs, and is an ordained minister. Jesse received a 2009 Rocky Mountain Region Emmy for his role as a spokesperson for the Arizona Literacy & Learning Center. The Extreme Decibel big band, formed in 1987 by trumpeter Clark Krueger and bassist Mike King, is one of the Southwest's longest running big bands. The 17-piece ensemble features many of the Valley of the Sun's top musicians. The band's repertoire consists of contemporary big band arrangements, as well as original compositions and arrangements by local composers. “Each year, our center assists more than 1,700 children, youth and adults through diagnosis and treatment for speech/language and reading disabilities,” said Linda Barr, ALLC executive director. “We also provide free screenings for children ages 3 through 6 for vision, hearing, speech, language, motor skills and reading readiness.” Event chair Sydney Blaine said, “Helping build a better-educated community is essential to the success of our state. My passion for language and communication is well-served through volunteer work with the Arizona Literacy & Learning Center, to help raise money for children and adults who are struggling with literacy and language-based learning challenges such as dyslexia.” Tests in Arizona have shown that four students in a standard class of 27 have a reading disability such as dyslexia. If not properly diagnosed and treated, learning disabilities impact a child's life forever. “An alarming 40 percent of students with learning disabilities will not graduate from high school with a standard diploma. Illiteracy is statistically linked to poverty, crime and/or underemployment in the workforce,” said Barr, adding that currently only 24 percent of fourth-graders are reading at grade level in Arizona, ranking Arizona's fourth graders 47th nationally in reading comprehension.
