All-Star concert marks grand opening of The Nash on October 3 Features Houston Person, Russell Malone, Cedar Walton, Christian McBride and Lewis Nash By Joel Goldenthal On Wednesday, October 3, 2012, Jazz in AZ’s new education and performance center, The Nash, will celebrate its official grand opening with a “magnitude EVENT ten” concert on the jazz Richter scale. World-renowned drummer and namesake, Lewis Nash, will lead a quintet featuring the boss tenor of Houston Person, the playful guitar of Russell Malone, the genius of piano legend Cedar Walton, and the commanding bass of
“the most valuable player” in jazz (Modern Drummer Magazine), Phoenix native drummer Lewis Nash. The Nash was inaugurated on April 11th of this year with a benefit concert at The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM), featuring renowned trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. Since then, The Nash has presented weekly Sunday jazz jam sessions, “Catch a Rising Star” concerts featuring student jazz musicians, clinics taught by top

schools and other arts and culture organizations in the neighborhood, across the Valley, and throughout America. The Nash is a most ambitious effort to put Phoenix, America’s sixth largest city, on the jazz map. Our intention is to galvanize the jazz resources that already exist in our communtiy, offer educational programs and performance opportunities that enrich the jazz scene, and make Phoenix a destination for both new and mainstream jazz artists.
Houston Person Cedar Walton
Christian McBride. Individually and collectively, these five charismatic musicians perform with an energy that always captivates and excites audiences. Shows are at 7 and 9 p.m. at The Nash, located at 110 E. Roosevelt Street in Phoenix. General admission is $40, with a variety of premium and discount options available. A private in-home salon in North Central Phoenix will take place the night before the grand opening concert. Details and tickets for the concert and salon are available at www.thenash.org or by phone at 480-947-6119. Owned and operated by Jazz in Arizona, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, The Nash preserves the cultural treasure of American music history, showcases live performance and ensures the future of the iconic art of jazz for generations to come. The Nash is named for
Lewis Nash jazz educators from across the Valley, a variety of big band performances and student recitals; and entertained thousands of visitors during First Friday artwalks. Starting in October, The Nash will present new music Fridays, mainstream jazz Saturdays, jazz jam session Sundays, and a variety of jazz happenings throughout the week. The Nash education annex, located next door, is scheduled to open later in the year. It will offer programs ranging from one-on-one private lessons to combo labs, improvisation workshops, and big band sectional coaching. The Nash will serve our entire community based on the conviction that jazz is for everyone: children, adults, seniors and families; musicians and nonmusicians, privileged and underserved youth. The Nash will collaborate with

Based on our first four months of operation, we’re off to a most encouraging start! The Nash will flourish through the generosity of individual Jazz Angels, businesses, corporations and foundations that value arts in our community, and the unique ability of jazz to promote individuality, creativity, harmony and joy in all aspects of our lives. Breath-taking and promising… Watching the progress of The Nash has been a breathtaking experience. From the search for suitable space and landlord negotiations....to remodeling the interior, adding another 900 sq. ft. between now and the end of the year...it's just remarkable. All of us at Jazz in AZ have the highest hopes and expectations for what The Nash represents as an education facility and concert venue. In July, our first First Friday drew more than 1000 visitors; in August, First Friday drew more than 1500 visitors – and that’s during the slower summer months! The Sunday jams this summer as well have been killer, with an always great core band and 25-35 players who get up and jam. And there were six great clinics too, taught by the elite of Valley jazz educators. And here’s an interesting anecdote: several folks who attended the recent Prescott Jazz Summit left after the Sunday brunch just so they could get to The Nash by 6pm. Now that's saying something! Together, we are building something so special, so unique and so powerful in The Nash that we're bound to be 'Nashional' by next summer! The October 3rd grand opening concert with its stellar lineup of Houston Person, Russell Malone, Cedar Walton, Christian McBride and Lewis Nash puts us in the company of a very few prestigious jazz clubs in the US. All of this takes a lot of work -- hours and hours of passionate dedication. The momentum continues to build; and as president, I have to thank the Jazz in AZ Board of Directors, associate board members, our growing team of volunteers, and our executive director Joel Goldenthal for leadership toward accomplishing our ambitious goals; and of course, Herb and Lorene Ely for their generosity in “seeding” The Nash. Not involved in The Nash yet, or want to be a bigger part of this model jazz venture? We have many openings and exciting opportunities to become board and committee members and volunteers, and the need for financial support to fuel and sustain The Nash education and performance programs cannot be overstated. The Nash is the future of jazz in Phoenix and we must keep the fire burning. To find out more about how to get involved, visit the new www.thenash.org website, or call Barbie Baugh at 602-525-2687 or Joel at 602-750-7045. They’ll be glad to talk to you and come up with an opportunity that satisfies your soul and philanthropic goals. Sincerely, Steve Douglas

Bobby Hamilton to light up Jazz in AZ party on Sept. 16 By Joel R. Goldenthal “I love playing the piano…and the music that has always engaged me the most is jazz!” So says pianist--vocalist Bobby Hamilton, who will be performing at the Jazz in AZ party on September 16th from EVENT 3 to 5 p.m. at Kazimierz World Wine Bar in Scottsdale. Bobby’s roots are in upstate New York. He has worked with many artists on the local level, and in numerous configurations ranging from solo to big band, as well as with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. Bobby works extensively as a premier lounge artist in the cruise/vacation/hotel industry. “My music is influenced by the many jazz artists I have encountered over the years; but Oscar Peterson, Barry Harris, Roland Kirk, Jaki Byard, Junior Mance, and of course, Thelonious Monk are my main influences. And let’s not forget Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, and the entire history of swing and big band music.
Bobby says, “People often dance to my music. They tell me they like me because I have a ‘groove’ to my music: a flow; a genuine good rhythm.” Over the years,
Bobby says that requests for vocals have outmatched the requests for instrumentals. “Always sensitive to the need for people to enjoy themselves and what they hear, I have developed a singing style that seems to touch people in unexpected ways.” Bobby also ventures into blues, R&B and pop

News from Out & About By Patricia Myers
Paris is the New York City of the European jazz world. Every night of the week, live jazz is played somewhere to celebrate and venerate America's global gift. There are more than 30 live-jazz venues, as well as performances on bridges and street corners, in Metro stations and parks, plus a series of annual summer festivals. Visitors and locals find live jazz listings in two weekly magazines, Pariscope and L'Officiel des Spectacles. During my 15th summer in Paris, I attended the American Festiv' Halles in July and August at Au Duc des Lombards on the Right Bank, hearing stars ranging from Dr. John and Ran Blake to Gretchen Parlato, Ambrose Akinmusire and Uri Caine, as well as local and touring combos. A series of legendary musicians performed in the huge Olympia hall, including dynamic 82-year-old Ahmad Jamal with guest Yusef Lateef (still extraordinarily inventive at age 92), also Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. The year-round mainstay for top touring bands is still New Morning, a converted storage warehouse. Among the Paris Jazz Festival's weekend series at the Parc Floral (botanical park) was a memorable performance by Lisa Simone (a Broadway mainstay since the 1990s), paying tribute to her late mother Nina's songbook. Other concerts featured European combos playing tributes to Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk and Cole Porter, as well as original compositions. The nighttime club scene stayed strong, slowing a bit in August during the traditional month of vacation for most French. But smaller local places continued to satisfy the aural needs of locals and visitors alike. For swing-jazz fans, Le Caveau de la Huchette on the Left Bank booked bands seven nights a week with a large space for dancers in the underground venue. Among those booking strong local talent were Sunside-Sunset, Baiser Sale', Café Universel, La Cave du 38 Riv', Babilo and Chez Papa. Only a few hotel lounges book duos and trios, such as the longtime Hotel Meridien L'Etoile and Hotel L'Aubusson's Café Laurent. Returning to the parallel of Paris to New York, the difference for jazz fans on
a tight budget is that, just as in Arizona, there are many French clubs with moderate or no admission cost. And that's priceless. The Buzz: Now there's only one. After basketball star Steve Nash left the Phoenix Suns basketball team, the reference now means The Nash, Jazz in AZ's new downtown Phoenix center for education and performance. A grand opening is planned for late fall, and in the meantime, the weekly Sunday jam sessions continue to feature pro and student musicians, us the summer's weekly-Wednesday Rising Stars series brought more quality music to the new venue. Don't miss the center's grand opening concert on Oct. 3, featuring namesake drummer Lewis Nash and his East Coast colleagues, Cedar Waltonpiano, Houston Person-tenor sax, Russell Malone-guitar and Christian McBride-bass. The second annual Tom Miles Scholarship Fundraiser is scheduled Sept. 23 at Los Olivos Patio Mexican Restaurant (on Second Street, west of the Scottsdale Center for the Arts). The afternoon will feature four bands, the San Tan Swing Band at 2 p.m., Ted Goddard Tentette at 3 p.m. (performing the Prince Shell library that was archived by the guitarist-leader), Fred Forney and Arizona Jazz Masterworks Orchestra at 4 p.m, and the Colleen Callahan Band at 5 p.m.; details in Calendar. The annual Paradise Valley Jazz Party will continue into its 36th year on March 23-24 at the Scottsdale Hilton Resort, announced by producer Don Z. Miller, a founder and a past president of Jazz in AZ; more info at paradisevalleyjazz.com. Guest of honor will be Mike Kocour, director of jazz studies at ASU. This Riffs column and three more of my jazz writings won awards from a national press association. The awards were first place for informational columns (Riffs for Jazz in AZ), first place for speech writing (“Four Great Ladies of Jazz”), second place in writing for specialinterest websites (AllaboutJazz.com,
JAZZ NOTES “Paris Jazz Diary”) and third place in writing for nonprofit websites (jazzinaz.org, feature on the Paradise Valley Jazz Party). Musicians' News: The Bad Cactus Brass Band was chosen to perform in June on a Southwest Airlines flight from Phoenix to Las Vegas. The band gained the highest number of supportive votes on the airlines' website. The musicians performed in both terminals and on the flight itself, surprising and delighting the passengers. We all know that “jazz flies,” and this time it really did! The Reed Family reunited in August to perform in Seattle for Teatro Zanzini, where Francine Reed has been a featured act for many seasons. Judy Roberts, back in Chicago for the summer, welcomed vocalist Renee Patrick to perform with her during a visit, replicating the Monday duo of Malee's on Main last season. Judy returns to Remington's in late September, after she and saxophonist Greg Fishman perform during the 55th annual Monterey (Calif.) Jazz Festival and for the weekly summer series in Newport Beach, Calif. Pianist Russell Schmidt, director of jazz studies at the University of Utah since August 2011, will perform Sept. 6 at Sacred Grounds for the release of his new CD, “Anachromysticism," with Brice Winston-tenor sax, Eric Rasmussen-alto sax, Dwight Kilian-bass and Tim Rachbach-drums. ASU jazz studies director Mike Kocour assisted with an ongoing series at Tempe Center for the Arts. “Performance with a View” was started by Friends of TCA in February 2009 as a community outreach project to acquaint audiences with TCA, board president Gail Fisher said. Bob Corritore, blues musician and KJZZ-fm radio's Sunday night host, was honored in the 19th Annual Living Blues Readers' Poll for his outstanding harmonica playing. Bob also has often donated use of the Rhythm Room for special jazz events and benefits, as well as staging nightly blues there. Quotable: “The sign of a mature musician is knowing what not to play." Dizzy Gillespie. Final Bar: Bettye Wilson, past president of Sedona Jazz on the Rocks, Aug. 7, in Sedona.
