Captains prep for FLIBS

FLIBS is a great place to catch up with old friends and browse new yachts, but the background preparation for yachts makes the whole show go.

Although there are hundreds of yachts at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, each one follows a similar rule: they must look perfect. Making sure your boat looks like it’s fresh off a shipyard isn’t always the easiest task, but learning some of these preparation tips goes a long way in helping your vessel stand out.

Spiffing up your boat isn’t something that’s new, you likely do it before each charter, but a boat show requires you to prep a boat for show instead of usage.

“You’re trying to put the boat back into a retail showroom turnkey condition,” said Capt. Billy Lockhart of M/Y Ocean Z

“Like a high-end car sitting inside the glass building of a showroom.”

Waxing the hull sides, replacing your fender covers, and bringing your teak back to its original golden color might not be regular procedures before a charter, but before the boat show it is a must, Capt. Lockhart said.

Capt. Lockhart also recommends moving weight in your boat to make sure it doesn’t look low in the bow.

“A boat looking high and proud in the bow is just optically a much nicer look,” Capt. Lockhart said.

Apart from making sure the boat is as clean as possible, crew should be aware of the difference in presentation for a boat show versus a charter. Although crew cabins are usually only for crew, potential buyers or guests might want to check them out.

“Usually, crew are still staying in the cabins, but in the morning they have to make it look like nobody’s there,” said Capt. Les Annan.

Capt. Annan also recommends staying stocked up on some provisions for the show, like snacks and drinks for guests. Flowers and the normal charter preparation for the interior of the boat is also a must.

Living on a boat during a boat show does mean crew, captains, and chefs still go through some of their regular activities, which includes cooking meals. Capt. Jared Burzler recommends passing on cooking foods with smells that can stick to your boat, like fried fish or German bratwurst. Instead, he says to always keep something quick to bake on board to make guests feel welcomed.

“Just have Pillsbury chocolate chip

cookies or a frozen piece of bread from a bakery that you have to bake,” Capt. Burzler said. “Throw it in the oven and it’ll cover the scent.”

Even if it isn’t a smelly meal, this trick works for other hiccups, like a holding tank backing up and spreading an unwanted scent throughout the boat.

The last necessary preparation for the boat show doesn’t have anything to do with the boat — instead, it is entirely the mental readiness of working a boat show. Each show is a lot of work, according to Capt. Burzler, and captains and crew need to be prepared to be on their ship all day, answering many questions.

“I think crew should get respect for doing a show, because the crew put up with a lot and do it with a smile on their face constantly,” Capt. Burzler said.

FLIBS 22: The Oasis Lounge Returns

CAPTAINS AND CREW CAN LOOK FORWARD TO ANOTHER YEAR OF GOURMET LUNCHES AND RELAXATION AT THE OASIS LOUNGE

Global Marine Travel and Yacht Chandlers’ Oasis Lounge returns for the 2022 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show — offering Captains and Crew gourmet boxed lunches, a fully stocked bar, Wi-Fi, live sports streams, and sponsored giveaways.

The Oasis is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with lunch deliveries from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The first Oasis location is located at the same place as last year, on the main show docks at the Bahia Mar Swimming Hall of Fame Face Dock.

The second Oasis location, which takes on a new look with a luxury indoor/ outdoor feel, will be located at FLIBS’s Superyacht Village. The second location has doubled in size from last year and includes a waterfront view and an outdoor patio.

In the past, the Oasis served food to its guests in a buffet style, but due to COVID-19 restrictions it changed to boxed lunches. Even with restrictions lifted, Oasis plans to continue serving its boxed lunches due to the positive response towards them.

“Some of the crew like to pick up their lunch and take it back to their cabins and

have it on board,” GMT Founder Tim Davie said.

18 years ago, Davie decided to create the first edition of the Oasis Lounge at FLIBS. It was born out of necessity, as no one catered to the captains and crew. Now, other shows have followed the path Davie created, with shows around the world creating their own version of the Oasis Lounge.

“Captains and crew are the ones that make the show,” Davie said. “This is a way for me and our sponsors to say thank you to them for their business over the year.”

Before GMT and the Oasis Lounge, Davie spent 10 years at sea as a crew member in the cruise line industry. He believes his time working as a crew member is what has helped him understand the needs of Captains and Crew better.

“We put so much time in training Captains and Crew, and they need to be treated like family to keep them around,” Davie said. “Our company and our sponsor’s company they’re all geared to look after the guys that make yachts work.”
