A RICH HISTORY: Broker Joe Bartram of Bartram & Brakenhoff has the listing on the oldest boat in the show, the 1939 Mathis-Trumpy M/Y Innisfail. Former owner of three Trumpys, he said he just loves this one. PHOTO/LUCY REED

Yacht is a chronicle of time By Lucy Chabot Reed While all eyes were on M/Y Diamonds are Forever, the new 200foot Benetti that pulled into the show yesterday morning, some crew were busy keeping old boats looking sharp. Capt. Bob Belschner and Chef Carole Cloonan were busy wiping Eisenglas and giving tours on the 1939 MathisTrumpy M/Y Innisfail, the oldest boat in the Palm Beach show. Alone in her decade among the show’s collection of boats, Innisfail has a long history of, well, being a part of history. She’s hosted presidents (plural, as in Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy) and served her country

during World War II. Her current owner, who has never owned a yacht this big, bought her because of her history. “It takes a pretty unique individual to own a boat like this,” said broker Joe Bartram, who has spent the past two days on his feet giving tours and talking history. “The current owner wanted a piece of history that he could touch and feel and take it back to what it originally was.” In the five years that he’s owned it, the owner has ordered the restoration of much of the yacht, including her original vertical pilothouse windows,

original style of smoke stack and restored the stem. “He did a lot of research,” Bartram said. “Even the furnishings are from the 1930s period.” The yacht also has a few modern touches, but they’re hard to see. A flatscreen television is hidden behind the Art Deco-era mirror in the main salon. A satellite dome is hidden in the stack. “The boat sells itself for anyone who is interested in this piece of history,” Bartram said. “Finding that person is like finding a needle in a haystack.” The show has a few other vintage megayachts. Among yachts 80 feet and larger, there are the 1980 Feadship M/Y Seagull of Cayman (131 feet), the 105-foot expedition yacht M/Y Ciao Bella from 1983, and a fleet of yachts from 1987, including the 142-foot Feadship M/Y Kingfisher, the 104-foot Broward M/Y Pathway, the 87-foot Burger M/Y Blue Star, and the 81-foot

Huckins M/Y Blue Eagle. Among smaller vessels, the show includes the 1947 Empress (58 feet), the 1959 Rybovich Chieftan (36 feet), the 1975 Rybovich Blue Fox (48 feet), the 1975 Burger M/Y Latitude Adjustment (64 feet, started life as Tigertayl and was part of the Gallant Lady fleet for a time), the 1980 Burger M/Y Taittinger (68 feet), the 1982 Tamaroa (74 feet), the 1986 sportfish MacDaddy (60 feet) and the 1989 Hatteras Bellagio (70 feet). Innisfail listed just last week for $2.95 million. Bartram knows the realities of the yacht market right now (“$3 million will buy you a lot more boat”) but he’s hoping that one special history buff steps aboard. “I just love her,” said Bartram, former owner of three Trumpys himself. “I hope and pray that when she does sell she ends up in good hands.” Lucy Reed is editor of The Triton.
