OTTO BUSSES VEJ
A strategic vision for Copenhagen’s central railway workshop Master thesis in collaboration with Jesper Hesselholdt
The aim of the thesis is to create a development vision for the Danish Railway’s (DSB) central workshop at Otto Busses Vej in Copenhagen. The idea is to transform a unique historical industrial site into a well-integrated mixed-use district in Copenhagen. The central railway workshop is many ways an ‘island’. It is surrounded by a sea of tracks and the younger generations do not know what is ‘out there past the tracks’. This area which in its glorydays was a popular place to work and do internships (3000+ employees) is now almost forgotten by younger generations. Being mentally and almost physically fenced off Copenhageners mainly go around the area, not through. The location is a unplanned missing link in Copenhagen being located right between new developments and the harbour and upcoming IKEA and Sydhavnen - an upcoming neighbourhood. The site is one of Denmark’s 25 national industrial heritage sites, and the proposal is a design that departures from the existing and still functional heritage, suggesting new functions for the workshop that has grown redundant over time. Through a three-point strategy this project aims to tackle the main issues of the area. Firstly by reconnecting the area to the surrounding
neighbourhoods with new green bikeroutes. Secondly the vacant spaces and buildings on site are reprogrammed into uses that are more relevant today. The aim is also to show that existing activities and new, different activities can coexist and benefit from eachother. Thirdly, it aims to expand upon the green qualities in the area, having both planted greenery and self-planted vegetation as a result of years of vacancy. Being a part of my thesis I worked on every single element though writing it together with Jesper Hesselholdt. The workload was equally devided between us and therefore I worked on everything from plans in AutoCAD and Illustrator to Virtual Reality visualisations in SketchUp and Photoshop. As a lot of project on this education I have been doing the most work on the models and therefore have develeoped most of the files needed to do the lasercutting of the models as well. The thesis was created between Febuary-August 2016, and defended on September 1st, 2016. To see the whole thesis visit: www.issuu.com/troelsogaard

VIRTUAL REALITY
During the thesis I experimented with using Virtual Reality as a new media to design and present project. This turned into four ‘VR Bubbles’ where the reader with a smartphone and VR Box is able to submerge him or herself into the project and get a sense of scale - a sense which is not always clear when presenting. We wanted to provide this experience and test out how this worked and we feel we succeded - or at least took the first step in a new direction. To see how the VR Bubbles (and QR codes) work watch this video: https://youtu.be/0dCmowiV4lk

ZYDHAVN JOIN(t)
A strategic vision for Copenhagen’s central railway workshop Course project in collaboration with Hanna Husum, Annabell Wallin Stengaard and Jesper Hesselholdt
Zydhavn Join(t) seeks to make a northsouth connection through Copenhagen’s district of Sydhavnen by defining and linking diverse areas, making their different qualities apparent and connected into a joint Sydhavn. In Zydhavnen, two main issues are identified: the apparent flooding issues and the lack of connectivity throughout the fragmented project area. Though three key areas, stormwater is managed and connectivity improved, spanning from the urban Sjælør Boulevard towards the sea surrounding Sydhavnstippen.
Venners Plads
Karens Minde
Sydhavns Tippen
The element of water plays a prominent role throughout the project and does not just give the opportunity to handle stormwater in a sustainable way but also act as a green-blue connector through the area. In order to create better connectivity towards Vestre Cemetary the fence is replaced by a soft barrier on form of a swale with standing water. The current parking lot at the local highschool will be turned into a public green space with detention bassins.
The cultural area of Karens Minde is made more visible and prominent by superimposing a cirle marking its central location in Sydhavnen and as the joint in the project, linking the north and the south. The unknown area of Tippen has many qualities being near water and used as grassing area. This project will create better access to this green space by highlighting accessibility and views, while still having sheep roaming the site. My main responsibilities for this project was to come up with the key concept, as well as gathering the necessary background knowledge for the site. I also did a lot of diagrams and visualisations for the final project. With the conceptualisation and From an early stage I started doing the modelwork which led to the final designs of the detailed plans. Taking the ideas from the conceptualisation stages, interpreting them and turning them into models, led to an almost final design even before being digitalised.

CLEAN CURB
Conceptual product design in collaboration with Marie Glad and Nanna Maj Stubbe Østergaard
CleanCurb was developed as a part of a stormwater management course where the focus was to design a product to help stormwater management. This product could turn sidecurbs into road run-off management areas, disconnect roads from sewers and treat poluted road run-off in urban areas, while being non-intrusive. Besides making the concept development with the group, as well as doing marketing strategies and illustrations, I was responsible for all 3D modelling of this product.
DataSheet
CleanCurb PROBLEM //
TARGET MARKET//
Cloudbursts are becoming more and more frequent especially in the Copenhagen region and the massive amounts of water can be devastating for the city and cause problematic combined sewer overflows. Road run-off is of special interest because is constitutes a large part of the urban run-off but due to high levels of pollution it needs careful handling and cannot be infiltrated directly without treatment. Handling road run-off in single-family housing areas will to a great extend relieve pressure on the right now inadequate sewer system resulting in great savings in improvement costs. However many standard residential street does not have the excess space that is needed to handle the large amounts of polluted water.
Municipalities and utility companies seeking green solutions.
SOLUTION //
MARKETING STRATEGY //
CleanCurb provides a treatment and infiltration solution taking up minimum space while providing a green profile. CleanCurb is a linear curb extension element that can replace conventional curbstones and thereby make the street itself able to treat and infiltrate polluted run-off. The design is non-intrusive preserving the existing traffic-flow in the street while creating a clear green separation of road and sidewalk. The system consists of a number of interlinked elements forming a linear curb extension. Each element consists of a permeable concrete frame in the bottom filled with gravel for storage and infiltration, on top a layer of filter soil to treat the water before it is infiltrated through the lower half of the element. A vegetation layer helps prevent clogging of the soil and provide additional treatment abilities along with aesthetical value. Due to the simple design of the element it is easy to produce and implement in existing street profiles. An overflow integrated in the element makes this solution safe during large rain events and provides possibility for adaptable dimensioning through an underlying gravel trench.
Direct contact to possible customers.
COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES// The treatment and infiltration capacity is large compared to the spaces the solution takes up the existing streetscape. In addition there is possibility for further development to fit different urban settings. The specific type of permeable concrete used is patented by Bo Midtgaard making the product and its properties unique on the market.

STORMWATER MANAGEMENT A university project proposal for a stormwater management solution at the old part of Frederiksberg Campus, Copenhagen. Along the ‘spine’ of the campus, a biodiversity and overflow trench together with permable pavement makes sure the campus easily can withstand a 10-year-storm event. Calculations have been made to for the system to cope with the amount of water from the catchment areas.

THE HILL LANDSCAPE
SKATE RAMP
At a post industrial site at Strandlodsvej 67 on Amager, the goal was to create a new temporary public space for the locals. By engaging them and listening to their ideas we created ‘The Hill Landscape’. Hills and pedistals for art installations should drag people out into the corners of the site.
Being a part of the voulenteer group at the ‘Byg det op’ I was in the team building the skateramp. The whole project was created together with the local residents of Kiirke Sonnerup.
