JANUARY 2013
iPhone Art
F t L AU D E R DA L E S U N
Florida in January means seabirds, cool breezes and morning clouds.
iPhoneography, or mobile photography, is visual art created, edited and produced entirely on iPhone.
January along the shore this year has been very different photographically. My little patch of Fort Lauderdale North Beach, where almost all my photographs are created was broken by high tides in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
The device is the common denominator of a growing global network of photographers, artists and individuals who have embraced the limited capabilities and have found enormous common ground artistically. Artists the world over have put aside their bigger cameras to enter this amazing social photography scene.
We’ve had high tides before, but this one really exposed the vulnerability of coastal living in Florida. Even a passing tropical storm can wreck havoc. From my point of view the beach is no longer an easy subject. Many of the palms that have featured in my images are gone or in a sorry state. The efforts to repair the broken seawall along the A1A coastal highway, which was badly damaged along a half mile stretch means that Big E’s beach will remain a building site for the next year at least. I’ve included a special set of images of the storm damage, which is a step away from my usual natural subject matter. I wouldn’t normally point my lens at anything man made but this last few months have been exceptional. In a few weeks the leatherback turtles that nest on our shores will test the city’s ability to do major construction work along a piece of protected shoreline. My daily beach walk will continue of course, and the changing natural scene along Fort Lauderdale’s coastline remains at the heart of my work.

A passing superstorm and a series of high tides washed away my favorite local beach. It will take so many months to
mend the
damage and to restore paradise. Big E’s favorite patch is gone, replaced by growling trucks and ugly
stormstruck
barricades.

iPhoneography (or mobile photography)
Pigment printing processes have been utilized since the middle of the 19th century. The image stability of pigment printing is superior to that of any other method of printing, including traditional silver-halide or metal-based. Digital inkjet printing has seen a surge in the use of the pigment ink as ink sets have been refined to be compatible with the latest in high-resolution inkjet technology.
is a new and popular photographic medium, that combines a camera, a set of applications that process and edit these images and a means to share in real time to social media and website communities.
Artists and photographers have realized that the shared limitations of a globally available mobile device create a level playing field for creativity. The resulting outburst of visuals via Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Eye’em and a myriad of website and photoblogs have together
A digital pigment print, sometimes referred to as a pigmented paper print, is a digital image rendered onto an uncoated, natural fiber substrate with pigment inks.
