welcome to the hilltop! FAQ’S On behalf of the sororities and the Panhellenic Council, we are excited to welcome you to Birmingham-Southern College! The Panhellenic Council is comprised of all Greek women that preside over the sororities found on BSC’s campus: Alpha Chi Omega (ΑΧΟ), Alpha Omicron Pi (ΑΟΠ), Chi Omega (ΧΟ), Kappa Delta (ΚΔ), Pi Beta Phi (ΠΒΦ), and Zeta Tau Alpha (ΖΤΑ). It is our duty to promote and ensure fraternal spirit and cooperation among Birmingham-Southern sororities and to coordinate Greek activities such as Recruitment. For most women, Recruitment week is both exciting and confusing. During Recruitment week, you will get to meet the sorority women in each sorority, and they will get to meet you through a series of parties. In this time, you are given the opportunity to look for a sorority where you will be able to enjoy friendships, share ideals, and develop as an individual. There is no fee to participate in Recruitment at Birmingham Southern, unlike most schools. We hope that this will encourage you to come see what Greek life is all about! Though you may attend the entire series of parties during Recruitment, there is no requirement that you join a sorority after Recruitment week. We encourage you to attend the parties because it is a wonderful chance to meet some of the most exceptional women on BSC’s campus. We hope to see you participate in Recruitment in the fall. We are looking forward to meeting you. Again, welcome to ‘Southern! Sincerely, Alex Abangan, VP of Recruitment

What is Panhellenic? Panhellenic is an organization of all Greek women. All of BSC’s eight sororities are members of Panhellenic. The BSC Panhellenic Council is composed of one representative from each sorority and serves as a governing body to promote inter-sorority cooperation and adherence to the National Panhellenic Conference policies. The BSC Council coordinates the Formal Recruitment process in the Fall as well as other campus wide activities throughout the year.

What is Recruitment? Recruitment is a period during which you and sorority members have an opportunity to become acquainted. It consists of a series of informal parties at which you will meet sorority members and learn more about sorority life. At the end of Recruitment, through a process of mutual selection and preference, you may be invited to become a member of a sorority.

Who is eligible for Sorority Recruitment? Any female who is officially enrolled as a full-time student at Birmingham-Southern College and who is not on academic or social probation is eligible.

How do you register for Recruitment? Register online at http://panther.bsc. edu/~hellenic/ as soon as possible so the chapter will know that you are planning to go through Recruitment.

When is Recruitment? Recruitment activities begin on Friday, September 7, 2007, and continue through Tuesday, September 11. A daily schedule of parties will be included in the Recruitment Booklet, which you will receive once you have registered for recruitment.

What does a sorority offer? All sororities are essentially idealistic organizations committed to high principles and worthwhile endeavors. Sorority life is designed to inspire you, to help you get the most from your college experience, and to meet others who share your interests. Sororities aim to create an atmosphere in which you can make special friends, strengthen your character, develop leadership, better organize your time, and do well in your academic studies.

Sororities offer a wide variety of benefits. Scholarship - Birmingham-Southern’s sororities offer a variety of programs to ease the transition from high school to college level studies and strive for academic excellence. Our success in this area is reflected by our spring All-Sorority Grade Point Average of 3.329, which is above the All-School Grade Point Average of 2.943 and the All-Women Grade Point Average of 3.016. Last year, our Panhellenic was recognized receiving the Southeastern Region Gamma Sigma Alpha Scholarship Award for outstanding academics.

Service - Philanthropic programs and community service projects are a high priority of BSC’s chapters. The sororities on campus are very proud of their service and of the recognition that we have received. Be sure to note each sorority’s major philanthropy during Recruitment. Leadership Training - Sororities develop leadership by allowing you to become an officer in your new member class or as the chair of a chapter committee. Also, the members will help you get started in campus activities that interest you. Sorority life teaches both cooperation and acceptance of responsibility as part of leadership development. An Enriched College Education - By associating yourself with others of similar ideals, you will be able to grow in all areas of your life and become better prepared for life after college. Learning to work together for the good of the chapter is excellent preparation for citizenship in the larger world of alumnae life after college. Friendship - From the moment you join, you will belong to a group of young women who are sincerely concerned about you. The friends that you make will be the ones that will last throughout the rest of your life.

What are “Recs” and Alumnae information sheets? Recommendations, also called membership information forms or ‘Recs,’ are letters or statements from alumnae to a sorority’s chapter recommending a Potential New Member for membership. During the summer you may be asked by an alumna of a sorority to provide information to her about you and your high school activities. If you know women who are alumnae of sororities which have chapters at Birmingham-Southern College, you should let them know that you are planning to go out for Recruitment. Recommendation forms for the sororities at BSC are available in Student Affairs. Do not worry if you are not approached to provide information to alumnae. Every sorority does not require recommendations. The final responsibility for obtaining a recommendation lies with the chapter, not the Potential New Member.

“ Being a sorority woman at BSC

opens doors for new opportunities and experiences, while still allowing the opportunity for personal growth and development through service, friendship, and scholarship.” Tawnya Nylund

There are a few steps that a Potential New Member can take to assist in the process: 1. Register online at http://panther.bsc.edu/~hellenic/ as soon as possible so the chapters will know you are planning to go out for Recruitment. 2. Make sure that sorority alumnae whom you know realize that you are interested in sorority membership at Birmingham-Southern. 3. Be prepared to give information concerning yourself and your activities as well as a picture to alumnae when it is requested. Although a recommendation is helpful, a Potential New Member should not worry if she does not know alumnae who can write a recommendation.
