The Panhellenic Creed We, as Undergraduate members of women's fraternities, stand for good scholarship, for guarding of good health, for maintenance of fine standards, and for serving, to the best of our ability, our college community. Cooperation for furthering fraternity life, in harmony with its best possibilities, is the ideal that shall guide our fraternity activities. We, as Fraternity Women, stand for service through the development of character inspired by the close contact and deep friendship of individual fraternity and Panhellenic life. The opportunity for wide and wise human service, through mutual respect and helpfulness, is the tenet by which we strive to live.

Frequently Asked Questions about Recruitment What do sororities look for in members? This is similar to asking, "What do you look for in your friends?" There are many answers. When sororities choose new members, they look for many characteristics. They look for women who possess different qualities, talents, interests, and abilities in order to form a diverse group in which each member benefits.

How should you approach recruitment parties? You should be natural and be yourself. Talk about yourself, what you like to do, and your interests. Keep in mind that the sorority women once went through the Recruitment process too, and they know what it's like to be a Potential New Member. If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask them. After all, asking questions is one of the best ways to start a conversation. You should also:

Attend parties that you were invited to Be prompt Stay until the end Relax Enjoy yourself

What are the Recruitment rules? Rules have an important purpose in recruiting. The Panhellenic Council has made these rules giving equal consideration to all Potential New Members and to all sororities. You help yourself and the sororities to maintain ethical standards by refusing to be recruited unfairly. You should familiarize yourself with the Recruitment rules, which are located in the back of this booklet. Sorority members and Potential New Members are obligated to abide by these rules. If you have any questions concerning them ask your Rho Gamma! Any violation of these rules should be reported as soon as possible to your Recruitment Counselor (Rho Gamma), a Panhellenic Officer, or the Panhellenic advisor.

Formal membership selection is not an easy task. It varies somewhat from sorority to sorority, based on national policies and chapter by-laws. Panhellenic has no input in the membership selection process or the qualifications that each sorority considers for membership. The selection process begins before Recruitment actually starts. Alumnae groups from each sorority supply their collegians with information and recommendations on potential members. Sororities review all of the information and try to familiarize themselves with the Potential New Member before Recruitment begins. Actual membership selection does not begin until after the parties are held. A sorority not only has to choose individual members, but an entire new member class. This new group must have leaders and followers, athletes and artists, scholars and musicians. Sororities strive to achieve a well rounded and balanced group of women.

Since membership is voluntary and a matter of mutual choice, you are the one to decide what is best for you. You should keep an open mind during this period. After getting acquainted with all of the sororities, you will be in a better position to know your preferences.

How do you join?

What does it mean to be a legacy? Legacy is another term for a woman whose mother, grandmother, or sister is an initiated member of a sorority. The bond of having an actual family member in one's sorority is special and one that sororities want to encourage. However, it is not a guarantee that a woman will necessarily be chosen to be a member of her family member's sorority. She will be chosen based on her own merits. Likewise, a woman who is a legacy of any participating sorority would of course want to look closely at that chapter. However, she should also look closely at every other chapter on campus to make sure the chapter she chooses to join is the best match for her, not just her family member. Myths often circulate during Recruitment week about legacies. These myths include: 1. A legacy will automatically receive a bid from a sorority for which she is a legacy. FALSE Being a legacy is not a guarantee that a woman will be chosen to join that sorority. Every sorority has its own policies concerning legacies. 2. A legacy at one chapter will be automatically released from every other chapter. FALSE While chapters may realize that a woman may feel a very special bond to a sorority where she is a legacy, each chapter wants to find the women which best fit into their sorority and will look at every person individually to find these women. 3. If you are not a legacy, you will not have as strong a chance at joining as those who are legacies. FALSE As stated before, chapters look at each woman based on her own merits.

How do you decide which sorority to join? This is the most important question that you will have to consider. You will not have to make a final decision until you have gotten to know all of the sororities on campus.

When you decide your preferences, after meeting the members of a sorority, you will list on a preference card the order of the sororities in which you would like to be a member. (Your preference card is completed online). Each sorority will prepare a list of Potential New Members in order of preference which it would like to invite to become members of its chapter. The process that a sorority uses to invite Potential New Members into membership is completely confidential. The order of your preferences for sororities is matched with the order of the sororities' preferences. Through this system of mutual selection, bids are issued and Potential New Members can become New Members. You can only be issued one bid to join one sorority. Each year a sorority is limited in its total membership and its total number of New Members each year. The number of New Members allowed each chapter (quota) is determined each year based on the number of Potential New Members who are interested in sorority membership at BSC. This system ensures equitable growth of the sorority chapters and the overall strength of the Greek system.

Will all of the Potential New Members join at the end of Formal Recruitment? Since Recruitment is a process of mutual selection, both on the part of the sororities and the Potential New Members, not everyone who participates in Formal Recruitment will join. Merely "going out for Recruitment" does not ensure that you will be asked to join a sorority

nor that you will want to join a sorority. There are many factors which go into the selection of members. Preferential bidding is doubly selective- the group has to select the individual and the individual has to select the group. We believe that you could be happy with any of the groups on our campus or that you could be happy as a student who chooses not to belong to a sorority. We know that you will use your best judgment in making the decision that is right for you.

What is open Recruitment? Open Recruitment begins on Wednesday, September 13. During Open Recruitment, sororities which did not make quota may hold organized parties and issue bids. It is not necessary to register for Open Recruitment because anyone who meets the requirements to join is automatically eligible. Open Recruitment continues throughout the school year, lasting until the last day of classes in the spring term. It is not wise to refuse a bid from one group during Formal Recruitment in order to wait for a bid from another group. If another group makes quota during Formal Recruitment, they will not be allowed to take additional new members during Open Recruitment.

What are the responsibilities of a member? Membership in a sorority is a lifetime commitment and should be taken seriously. Each person who becomes a new member goes through a new member education program. Once you have fulfilled the sorority's requirements (such as learning the history of a sorority and obtaining a specific Grade Point Average), you are initiated as an active member. Once a person is initiated, she can never join another national sorority. A pledge is binding for one year. If you decide not to be a member before you are initiated, you will not be allowed to join another sorority on campus for one year. As a member of a sorority, it will be your responsibility to participate in sorority activities. You will contribute your own time and talents to make the chapter successful. You will represent your sorority and our Panhellenic to other people. You will be expected to maintain the high standards which your sorority has established.

Meet the 2007 Recruitment Staff The 2007 Recruitment staff consists of the Panhellenic President, 1st Vice President, Vice President of Recruitment and twelve Rho Gammas. The President, 1st Vice President and Vice President of Recruitment all serve on the Panhellenic executive council. Their responsibilities during recruitment will be to assist in all Recruitment activities and ensure the process is smooth for all women involved. A Rho Gamma is a Recruitment Counselor who is available to answer your questions and give information and advice to you during Recruitment. You will be in a Recruitment Group. This will be like your 'family' during Recruitment. The Rho Gamma's are the leaders of these groups. Your Rho Gamma will be there to talk, laugh, or just to be a friend. The Rho Gammas were carefully chosen to help you. They are members of sororities on campus, but have agreed not to associate with their chapters during Recruitment. Instead, they devote their time and abilities to you in an unbiased, confidential, and professional manner. So, if you have any questions or just need advice and a friendly ear, remember your Rho Gamma is there!

Recruitment Parties What are the Recruitment Parties like? What should be worn? There are three rounds of parties that occur during Formal Recruitment. Each of these rounds is designed so that the sororities will get to know more about you and you will get to know more about the sororities. To give you a better idea of what to wear during the parties, a fashion show is planned for our Recruitment convocation so you can see what Potential New Members will be wearing for each type of party. If you have any questions regarding what is appropriate to wear, ask your Rho Gamma. She will be happy to help. We have also included some ideas and descriptions of each type of party.

Icebreakers: Friday, September 7 The first parties will be Icebreakers. During these parties you will be introduced to many members of each of the sororities, and you will be given an overall picture of each chapter and its national organization. These parties will last 30 minutes each. Informal, comfortable clothes are appropriate for icebreakers--such as sundresses, shorts outfits, slacks, capri's, skirts and blouses, and casual dresses. You might be sitting on the floor at times, so keep this in mind.

Skit Parties: Saturday, September 8 Skit parties come next. Potential New Members may attend up to five skit parties, during which you will have the opportunity to visit again with sorority members. The sororities will be presenting entertaining skits, so come prepared to have a great time. Snacks are also served at these parties.

The same comfortable clothes worn to Icebreaker are appropriate for Skit Parties. You might be sitting on the floor at times, so keep this in mind.

Preferential Evening Parties: Monday, September 10 The third and final round of parties is Preferential Evening Parties. You may attend up to three of these parties, which are a special ending to Recruitment. Preferential Evening Parties give the Potential New Member a closer look at the meaning of sororities and their sisterhood in a more serious and meaningful setting. You should wear a dress that would be appropriate for a tea or church for Preferential Evening Parties.

Snapshots of Sorority Life

2007 Closed Recruitment Rules for Potential New Members Recruitment provides an excellent opportunity for sororities and Potential New Members alike to meet one another. To ensure fairness and equal opportunity to all, guidelines and rules must be established. These rules are not designed to be arbitrary or rigid, but are carefully planned to ensure an equal chance for all sororities and Potential New Members to present themselves fairly. Any Potential New Member having questions concerning the following rules should feel free to contact the Panhellenic Vice President of Recruitment, Panhellenic Advisor or Rho Gamma. 1. Women who have registered for Closed Recruitment through Panhellenic will be eligible to attend Closed Recruitment parties. Registration is required before Closed Recruitment begins. A list of those registered will be available for each sorority. 2. Each Potential New Member will have a Rho Gamma assigned to them by Panhellenic. The Rho Gammas serve as advisors to the Potential New Members, and they will be available to answer any questions or help with any problems. However, Rho Gammas and Potential New Members may not go off campus together during Closed Recruitment. 3. In the spirit of equity and fairness to sororities and Potential New Members alike, it is required that Potential New Members attend all Closed Recruitment functions to be eligible to join during Formal Recruitment. In the event that a Potential New Member is unable to attend any party for a valid reason, a written excuse may be submitted to her Rho Gamma at least 3 hours prior to the beginning of that party. The Potential New Member will remain eligible if the excuse is approved by her Rho Gamma and the Panhellenic Vice President of Recruitment. If the excuse is not approved or no excuse is submitted, a Potential New Member will not be allowed to continue in Recruitment activities. 4. All Potential New Members attend each chapter's Icebreaker Parties. Skit and Preferential Parties are open only to Potential New Members receiving invitations. 5. The tight scheduling of events requires prompt attendance at all parties. It is a courtesy to the sororities to be on time to all functions. In the event that a Potential New Member is late, she must be excused, and she should inform her Rho Gamma and the Panhellenic Vice President of Recruitment. If a Potential New Member misses or is going to miss any portion of a round of parties, her Recruitment party schedule will be adjusted by the Panhellenic Vice President of Recruitment and Panhellenic Advisor so that she will be attending future Recruitment parties for as nearly equal periods of time as possible. 6. To ensure fairness during Closed Recruitment and to reduce pressure on Potential New Members as they make decisions, there is a period of Silence during which Potential New Members and sorority women may not talk with each other. The Silence Rule is in effect from the end of Preferential Parties on Monday, September 10 until bids are issued on Tuesday, September 11. During this time, Potential New Members and sorority women may have no communication. There is one exception to this rule: new students who are living with upper class women who are sorority women may talk with them, but not about Recruitment. During all other times, a sorority woman may talk with Potential New Members, but may not speak derogatorily about another chapter or individual. Potential New Members may not go off campus with sorority women at any time during Closed Recruitment. 7. At no time may a sorority woman or an alumna purchase food, gifts, or other items and services for a Potential New Member. 8. Closed Recruitment begins with the first Recruitment Party on Friday, September 8 and ends the morning after Bid Day.

9. Potential New Members, including new students for Summer/Fall, summer scholars, and transfer students, may not be in the sorority townhouses at anytime beginning June 1 until bids are issued except during Panhellenic Open House and scheduled Recruitment Parties. During these Recruitment functions, a Potential New Member may go upstairs only during Panhellenic Open House, but not during regular Recruitment parties. 10. During Pre-Recruitment and Closed Recruitment, a Rho Gamma , the Panhellenic President, 1st Vice President, or Vice President of Recruitment may not wear any Greek clothing, Greek jewelry, or any Recruitment outfit used by her sorority. They may not have any sorority affiliated decorations in their rooms or on their cars. 11. Potential New Members should report any infraction of the Closed Recruitment rules to the Panhellenic President or the Panhellenic Advisor in a timely manner, but not more than 30 calendar days from the date of the alleged infraction (including college breaks). This also applies to sorority members. The Honor Code of the College applies to students and the Panhellenic Recruitment Rules. 12. A sorority member may not ask a Potential New Member what she plans to join, what she puts on her preference cards, or which parties she is attending. A Potential New member may not be asked if she has made up her mind yet. 13. Sororities may not issue oral or written invitations to join before the time designated by Panhellenic. 14. No sorority member shall suggest to any Potential New Member that she refuse a bid from one group in order to wait for a bid from another group. 15. A sorority woman may not call, e-mail, fax, instant message, write letters or have any other form of communication that is not face-to-face with a Potential New Member during PreRecruitment. The exceptions to this rule are Rho Gammas, Panhellenic President, Panhellenic 1st Vice President, Panhellenic Vice President of Recruitment, Residence Advisors in their own Residence Halls, and anyone else serving in an official capacity as directed by BirminghamSouthern College faculty or staff. Sisters, including step/half sisters, are also exempt from this rule. 16. A sorority woman may not enter Margaret Daniel Resident Hall or Cullen Daniel Resident Hall or any Potential New Member's Room in other Residence Halls or Apartments. No sorority woman may be in any room or common area of a suite occupied by a Potential New Member if the Potential New Member is present, unless the sorority woman lives in the suite as well. A Potential New Member may not enter a sorority woman's room in any Residence Hall or Apartment. A Potential New Member may not be in any room or common area of a suite if a sorority woman is present, unless the Potential New Member lives in the suite as well. The exceptions to this rule are Rho Gammas, Panhellenic President, Panhellenc 1st Vice President, Panhellenic Vice President of Recruitment, Residence Advisors in their own Residence Halls, and anyone else serving in an official capacity as directed by Birmingham-Southern College faculty or staff. This rule is effective from Move-in Day until the start of Closed Recruitment. Sisters, including step/half sisters, are also exempt from this rule but are only allowed in the room of their sister. 17. Potential New Members may not go to fraternity houses from Move-In Day (Saturday, August 25) until Men's Bid Day (Saturday, September 15), except on Friday, August 31 and Saturday, September 1. They will be allowed to go to the fraternity houses from 7:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.

Birmingham-Southern College

Code of Ethics Purpose The Panhellenic Code of Ethics shall encourage in thought, word, and deed the upholding of truth, dignity, mutual respect, and the Panhellenic spirit by all of our sorority chapters and their members. We agree that these principles should never be sacrificed for the advancement of the individual sororities.

Vision We will promote Panhellenic spirit, mutual respect, and cooperation at all times. We will act in ways which will benefit the entire Greek system, remembering that healthy chapters exist only in healthy Greek systems. We will speak positively of individuals and other Greek organizations as well as dispelling stereotypes. We will support other chapters in their endeavors, and represent the Greek system favorably at college sponsored events. Academic achievement and respect for learning shall be encouraged by all of our sororities. We will continually strive for good relations with the faculty and administration of the college. In recruitment, we will remember to promote the Greek system as a whole while showing our chapter pride. We will encourage participation in open and closed recruitment. We will treat each other and the potential new members with respect. We will give all potential new members fair consideration in the selection process, recognizing that diversity should be respected and valued. We will engage in normal, friendly contact with the potential new members, respecting their privacy and refraining from excessive contact. We believe that potential new members should decide for themselves where they feel most comfortable, including the decision to not become a part of the Greek system. We will never make potential new members feel uneasy or pressured by our speech or action. We will refrain from questions which may cause discomfort to the potential new member. We will not mislead potential new members in any way, particularly leading them to believe that they will receive a bid from our chapter. We will abide by all national and local risk management policies including but not limited to those of Birmingham-Southern College, National Panhellenic Council, and each individual national/international organization. We believe in upholding the spirit and intentions of these policies and maintaining the well-being of our members. We will not overlook any disregard for these policies whether intentional or unintentional. We will promote events that bring all of our Greek women together. We will show our mutual respect in all activities, as in intramurals and mixers. We believe that hazing is thoughtless and uncaring, and we will always treat our new members with dignity. We will not take an unfair advantage in any situation to promote our Greek organizations over any other organization. As members of other organizations, we will be fair in determining whom we recommend, vote for, speak for, or support- whether it be in new member selection, officer selections, or other matters. As sorority women, we will trust in the sincerity of all our chapters and their members in abiding by our code and rules.

These are the tenets by which we strive to live.
