PLEASE
DISTURB!
In an episode of the great 1970s sitcom “Good Times,” J. J. decides it’s time to move out on his own in order to pursue his passion of painting. He ends up moving to a new apartment on the opposite side of the complex only to find there’s no activity happening on the street outside his window. There was nobody playing stickball in the street, no kids playing double-dutch on the sidewalks, nothing happening at all.
Uninspired after a couple of weeks in his new pad, J.J. has only one painting to show for his newfound freedom; a white piece of canvas with only the words “Please Disturb” painted in red. J.J. was bored to tears and, as a result, he lost his motivation – his mojo. You don’t need to be a painter, a writer or a musician to know how deadly boredom can be to the psyche. When boredom hits, stuff doesn’t get done. We may start out with good intentions, but if the process is dull the incentive to see it through can evaporate faster than a driveway puddle in August. Perhaps no other part of our lives is more susceptible to the attacks of boredom than our health and wellness. See if the articles in this issue help you stay motivated and follow through on those goals you have set for yourself. We enjoy seeing our Members improving their lives by walking on treadmills, working out on fitness equipment, and swimming laps in the pool. However, to make the most out of life, sometimes you just have to shake things up, get out of your comfort zone, and try something new.

You can do that. Do you want to show off that turnaround jump shot you’ve been working on? You can do that, too. Finally if you ever find yourself getting bored, just send us a note with these words: Please Disturb!

Red Diamond gives YMCA its largest gift ever
LifeSkills
In February, the YMCA of Greater Birmingham received its largest gift ever; Red Diamond, Inc. donated its former headquarters in the North Birmingham/ Norwood community to the association.
3 WAYS TO SHAKE UP A STALE WORKOUT REGIMEN
1. Variety is the Spice of Life Don’t do the same thing every day. Many people get caught up in thinking they have to get on a treadmill for 30 minutes every day. If you want to have a better chance of meeting and exceeding your wellness goals, you have to change things up. Find something new like a class on the schedule that looks like fun to you.
2. Let the Sunshine In Get outside. That’s one of the easiest things you can do, especially in colder weather. Cold air causes you to work a little harder in order to keep your body warm and burn more calories. It’s nice to have different scenery to look at rather than just cable news channels.
3. Make it A Group Experience
Build in some accountability by working out with others. You always work harder with a group than you do by yourself. When you train with a group, you know they’re watching what you’re doing and you can tell how hard they’re working as well. But, really, it’s just more fun to exercise with a bunch of friends.
“This is an exciting new opportunity for the work of the YMCA,” said Jim Lombard, YMCA President and CEO. “Through Red Diamond’s gift we can serve even more people through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility in this area of Birmingham, while bringing the YMCA mission to life.” “We are thrilled at the new life our buildings will have in serving the families in this area,” said Bill Bowron, Red Diamond CEO. “My family has a long history of involvement with the YMCA, and this is the perfect use for the land and structures at that site.” Bowron’s great-grandfather, James Bowron, was one of the leaders of Birmingham industry who founded the Birmingham YMCA in 1884.
Dana Harmon is the Group Exercise Coordinator at YMCA Alabaster.

Volunteers Wanted No Experience Necessary
A lot of people don’t know all the things the YMCA does throughout the community, like giving scholarships to kids for summer camp or helping people who have lost their jobs continue to come to the YMCA,” Morgan said. “I enjoy going out and talking to people about the YMCA and trying to educate them about what the YMCA does.
From coaches for swim and sports teams, to people working behind the scene to help with administrative duties, to civic leaders serving as role models to children in YMCA child care programs, all of our volunteers have one thing in common – belief in the mission to put JudeoChristian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. However, if there is one misconception about who the volunteers of the YMCA of Birmingham are, it may be this: most volunteers grew up and have families that go back generations in the YMCA, right? Wrong. Some of the YMCA’s most valued volunteers are newcomers to the YMCA and its mission. Hargis Retreat board member Russ Morgan is a family man and business leader in the Greystone area, but was not a YMCA member nor had he ever heard of the YMCA of Birmingham’s oasis on Highway 280 until a chance conversation with a neighbor, Hargis board member Brad Flournoy. “He sees my little girls running around all day long and we’ve become pretty good friends. One day we were talking and he mentioned he was on the board at Hargis and he asked me to take a look at volunteering,” Morgan said. “I went out there one day to visit and was really surprised,” Morgan added. “I’ve lived in Inverness for seven years and had no idea such a neat facility was located so close to where I live.”

‘‘
Volunteerism is the lifeblood of the YMCA of Birmingham. Without the men and women who give generously of their time, talent and money, it would be impossible to provide many of the programs and services the greater Birmingham community has come to rely on.
Morgan soon signed on as a board member of Hargis, immersing himself in learning not only about how to help Hargis improve its public profile, but also about the Strong Kids Campaign and its goal to provide financial assistance to children and families who can’t afford character-developing services such as summer camp, Afterschool care, and youth sports. Despite his relative inexperience in the culture of the YMCA, Morgan says he enjoys talking to others about the mission of Hargis and the YMCA overall.
“A lot of people don’t know all the things the YMCA does throughout the community, like giving scholarships to kids for summer camp or helping people who have lost their jobs continue to come to the YMCA,” Morgan said. “I enjoy going out and talking to people about the YMCA and trying to educate them about what the YMCA does.” If you would like to become a YMCA volunteer, contact the executive director of your neighborhood branch or go online to ymcabham.org/ volunteer.

Disturb! PLEASE LET US DISTURB YOU
Regardless of our intentions, our energy levels, or our experience, boredom gets the best of us. We may not realize it at first, however that new routine we were all excited about a few weeks ago, or that new exercise regimen that helped us drop four inches in our waistline will eventually become as stale as week-old bread. It’ll become boring. Dull. Uninspiring. And when that happens, the tendency is to stop doing whatever it was that was so exciting in the first place. At the YMCA, we understand that boredom is one of the greatest obstacles to reaching goals. And, since our mission is help you reach those goals, then set and reach new ones, boredom must be defeated. So, if you believe you’re in a rut and need to shake things up a little, then, please, read on and then make time to incorporate these activities, or the dozens of other unique and exciting classes and programs around the YMCA of Birmingham. We promise you, you’ll be disturbed.

Put Up Your Dukes
“It is high cardio, much more than I ever thought,” says Mountain Brook member, Holly Simmons. “I like variation in my workout and I like to get outside of my comfort zone, and I’ve never done anything like this.” “It’s different from anything else I do,” adds Ann Cowan. “It’s not boring. It’s hard but it’s challenging and fun.” Two days a week, Foster teaches a handful of willing souls how to throw

jabs, crosses, uppercuts, and fast rolling in a setting that is guaranteed to work up a sweat. For some, the class is a great way to deal with some every day frustrations in a constructive way. “Some mornings there are different faces on that bag,” Cowan said with a laugh. “It might be someone I work with, a family member, but most of the time it’s Kerry.”

“Jab, Jab, cross! Jab, Jab, cross!” This is just a sample of the instructions participants get in the group boxing class at YMCA Mountain Brook. Led by personal trainer, Kerry Foster, participants strap on boxing gloves and work through a variety of punches on a heavy bag, while also working on footwork and core conditioning. It’s an intense 45-minute class that is both challenging and enjoyable.
I like variation in my workout and I like to get outside of my comfort zone, and I’ve never done anything like this.

When the topic of health and wellness comes up, what is often missing is a discussion about competition. For many, being involved in competition is the single greatest motivating factor to staying active. For proof, check out the regular group of basketball playing guys at YMCA Shades Valley. “It’s fun and it’s great recreation,” says John Powers, a noon day basketball regular for the last 15 years. “It’s a lot more interactive and you get to still be competitive. That part of it is important, especially as you get a little older. I’m in the 50-plus crowd right now.”
‘‘
Powers is just one of a large group of men who spends their lunch break playing basketball at Shades Valley every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Powers says that he plays with several people that he does business with in his professional life, but he believes basketball brings them closer together as friends. “It’s good to see them away from business and their jobs,” Powers said.
“You get to know them and their families a little bit better,” adds Mike Rankins, a regular with the hoops crowd for the last 18 years. “It’s not like being alone on a treadmill. You get to meet people and find out what’s going on in their lives, too.”
You get to still be competitive. That part of it is important, especially as you get a little older.

Downtown
Here the Water Runs Full Speed While running is a great exercise for cardiovascular health, there is no doubt that the pounding the joints take on the pavement is a big problem for runners. Running can also be a lonely activity which can cause newcomers to the activity to give up prematurely. Fortunately, there is a solution to both of these problems at YMCA Downtown. The Deep Water Running program is an informal group of people who meet once a week to work out in the pool and socialize with new friends. Amanda Reid, Membership Engagement Director and leader of the Deep Water Running group, says running under water is a great activity for anyone interested in running regardless of experience.
‘‘
‘‘
I look forward to this workout every week.
10 | www.ymcabham.org
“I think it’s really the ideal exercise for anybody because if you’ve been interested in starting to run, it’s a great way to build up your fitness level and transition to running on land. It’s also great for advanced runners to get in extra mileage without the wear and tear,” said Reid. “We also get together because it’s much more fun than running on your own and feeling like a big dork.” Kevin Burke, an experienced runner and regular group participant, says the Deep Water Running group is not only a great social hour, but is also a great total body workout, strengthening the core muscles, as well as the upper body and lower body due to the water’s resistance. In fact, he says he’s often surprised just how good a workout running under water can be. “I look forward to this workout every week,” said Burke. “It’s good because there are people you can run with and you can talk and catch up with them, and it’s just a good workout. What’s cool about it is you don’t realize how good a workout it is until you get out and walk around.”

It’s much better than sitting at home in front of the TV or the computer.
Family, Fitness and a Lot of Fun As boring as can be for an adult to walk endlessly on a circular track, imagine how boring it would be for a 10-year-old. In order to become healthy adults kids need exercise just like their parents, but they need variety and a sense of community as well. At the new Hoover YMCA, children and their parents – or in some cases, the grandparents – can learn about health and wellness together in the new Adult/Child Team Training program. Personal Trainer, Geneva Horton, leads the class twice a week, teaching kids and their adult counterparts proper form, safety and etiquette on the branch’s strength and cardio equipment. Those involved in the class like the opportunity to spend time together as a family and friends in pursuit of a healthier lifestyle. “It’s much better than sitting at home in front of the TV or the computer,” said Diane Jones, who attends Adult/Child Team Training with her granddaughter Natalie. “I started coming to the YMCA first and Natalie came with me. All she could do was run the track and that got boring pretty quick.” “If I was with a group, like I am right now, I would love to come here rather than play video games, but I’m still a big fan of video games,” admitted 10-year-old Adrian VanFossen. “I like being with a group and meeting new friends. It’s really cool.”

Greystone
Pushing and Pulling to your Personal Best
Group Exercise Director Renae McCullough runs this intense 75-minute class on Tuesday and Thursday, leading Members through 45minutes of spinning followed by 30 minutes of Pilates. McCullough believes it’s important to keep things fresh and has created a program that gives the best of both worlds – cardio and strength training – in a fun and friendly setting. “It breaks it up and it’s more fun because we all get to know each other and kind of cheer each other on,” said Julie Davis, Greystone member and Cycle/Pilates fusion participant.
12 | www.ymcabham.org
Not only has the Cycle/Pilates fusion class held her interest, Davis said it’s helped her to continue her favorite activity, running. She also said it’s helpful to have a powerful motivator like McCullough leading the class. “I like to run but I kept getting injured, so I started spinning and doing Pilates. By doing this class I don’t have to run as much,” said Davis. “I just had a personal best in the half marathon at Mercedes and didn’t hurt the next day.” “Renae is awesome,” Davis added. “It really has helped. I’ve told my friends if you get injured running, you need to come up here and do spin.”
‘‘
‘‘
It’s 8:30 a.m. on a Tuesday as about two dozen regulars roll into the spinning studio at YMCA Greystone. For some, the class will come to a merciful end in about 45 minutes. However, for a handful of others in the Cycle/ Pilates fusion class, their workout will only be half complete.
Pilates breaks it up and it’s more fun because we all get to know each other and kind of cheer each other on.
A Good Walk Made Even Better Walking and lifting weights. Two activities that, while beneficial to one’s health, can quickly become boring when doing them alone. However, at YMCA Vestavia, Healthy Lifestyles Program Director India Gold’s new program, Walk & Weights, combines simple cardiovascular exercise with strength training for women in a friendly, relaxed environment. “We hit the track or walk outside on a pretty day with a small group of women,” said Gold. “It’s lots of fun and we laugh a lot.” A one-hour program, Gold leads the group in a walk for the first 30 minutes before transitioning into a circuit of strength training for the final half-hour. Walk & Weights is a great startingpoint for women new to exercise and a chance to have a little light-hearted fun with each other, including their fearless leader, India Gold.

Trussville Ladies Win State Tennis Title This YMCA Trussville ladies 5.5 tennis team recently won the State Title at the USTA 5.5 combo level, a first time win for any team out of the Trussville YMCA. It’s an amazing accomplishment considering all of the team members were beginners when they started playing tennis within the last three years. “Most of these gals were baseball moms that decided they wanted to take up the sport of tennis,” said Head Tennis Pro, Pam Wildt. “They all went in together and started taking lots of lessons, starting at the lowest level of tennis and have worked their way to winning competitions at the local level.”. The 14-woman roster will compete in the Sectional Tournament in March, playing against some of the best women’s tennis teams from across nine states with a trip to the national championship tournament on the line. “These gals have bonded together so amazingly,” Wildt said. “They are practicing now like crazy, taking clinics, meeting for lunch, talking about their trip, and have the determination and desire to do their best to win at the sectional level.”

“This class is a lot of fun. It gets kids active and that kind of stuff.” “My favorite activity is the green loops where they direct us on certain movements and then as we go through them we can make up your own thing.” “This is better than being at home playing video games because when exercising then you stay healthy and you can do more active things when you grow up.”
