There is nothing wrong with change, if it is in the right direction. - Winston Churchill
When applied to your YMCA, truer words may never have been spoken. For generations, the YMCA of Birmingham has been a constant presence; a counselor when you needed someone to share with, a motivator when a personal goal seemed out of reach, a shoulder to lean on when times are hard, and a friend with whom to share a laugh or two. It’s been almost 130 years since the first YMCA was founded on Birmingham’s Southside, responding to the needs of idle young men the community. During that time change has also been a constant presence, sometimes it happened largely unnoticed, other times it happened to great fanfare and applause. From welcoming women into the Downtown Branch community nearly 30 years ago, to helping the children of Hispanic immigrants get ready for Kindergarten, to anticipating the opening of the new Hoover Branch later this month, any change undertaken by the Birmingham YMCA has been for the betterment of the community. And, as any parent, community leader or good Samaritan knows, when you put your focus on others first, often times your own wants or needs come last. How many of us look in our closet and realized we haven’t updated our wardrobe in years, or walked in the garage and realized we’re still driving around in that old car with a cracked windshield and a ding on the bumper, simply because we would rather use our resources on someone else or a greater cause. But there comes a moment when we realize it’s now or never and an update becomes necessary. The time has come for the Birmingham YMCA to upgrade our wardrobe. After 45 years of hard work presenting a positive image to the community, the traditional black and red YMCA logo has become a little old, frayed, and faded. And so, in the coming weeks you will begin to see a new, fresher, and vibrant image on your YMCA. This will include a new logo—in five eye-popping color palettes—and new language which will help the YMCA communicate our areas of focus—for Youth Development, for Healthy Living, for Social Responsibility in more dynamic ways. Think of it as your YMCA simply changing that old and faded cotton t-shirt for a new, better-fitting DriFit, or changing those old Keds for a new pair of cross-trainers. However, underneath it all is the same mission of service that has led the YMCA of Birmingham for almost 130 years: to put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

CheckingIn NEWS FROM AROUND THE BIRMINGHAM YMCA Project American Life Fall at YMCA Hargis Retreat is spectacular, and not all of it is due of the beautiful scenery at the Chelsea branch just minutes from Highway 280. Autumn is also the time of year Hargis welcomes sixth graders from all over onto the grounds for its innovative, four-day, threenight civics program for middle school students, Project American Life. Project American Life is based on the founding principles of the Declaration of Independence and the concept that all people have equal worth and that everyone has the right to pursue their dreams. “It all goes back to the Declaration of Independence and the idea that we’re all guaranteed the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and been endowed by their creator these things,” says Project American Life counselor Christine Shores. Children learn first-hand why the concepts of equality and independence are so important and why our forefathers fought to weave those concepts into the fabric of the nation. “They have the opportunity to see what their job is as an American citizen and what responsibilities they have,” says Angela Williams, a sixth grade teacher at Rock Quarry Middle School in Tuscaloosa.
Walking School Bus What has bright colors, traffic signs, dozens of feet, and provides exercise, companionship, and a safe way to school? It’s a new communityoriented health and safety strategy called a walking school bus. It’s early morning on Wednesday, October 5, National Walk to School Day. Robinson Elementary School students and their parents and grandparents begin to meet on a street corner in East Lake near a small portable sign that says walking school bus stop. The kids look and sound excited; the adults do too. Terri Harvill, executive director of the nearby Northeast Family Branch, is one of the official “bus drivers.” She goes over some hand signals and safety tips. The drivers, children and parents introduced themselves to people they met along the way. Judging from the smiles on the faces of the kids—and their parents—the walking school bus and National Walk to School Day was a huge success. Harvill hopes the program takes off and benefits the neighborhood kids. Currently, the Birmingham YMCA’s walking school bus is making rounds once a week on Wednesdays, but there are plans to expand the program in the near future. Interested? Contact Terri Harvill at tharvill@ymcabham.org.

For the eighth year, the YMCA of Birmingham is assisting with the Marines’ Toys for Tots program.
LifeSkills Tell Them A Story I grew up in the Southtown Housing Community and I can remember how the YMCA was impactful in my life as a young person. That made it easy for me to go out into the community and talk to business leaders about how there are many kids in our community who can’t afford to take advantage of the programs the YMCA has to offer.
All Drops Help Fill The Bucket I know the economy is the way it is right now, but every little bit helps. I made a lot of phone calls and visited a lot of people last year and I never got specific about how much I wanted them to give, but I just reminded them that any little bit was helpful. If 10 or 15 are able to give a small amount, then that small amount will eventually add up to a large amount.
Don’t Get Discouraged As you go out and ask people to support the Strong Kids & Communities campaign, you have to remember that not everyone will or can give. Last year I had some that turned me down, but I had so many others that were positive and willing to help in any way they can. Jerri Foster is a YMCA board member, fund raiser and retired teacher from the Birmingham City Schools. She was also the sixth grade teacher of American Idol champ Ruben Studdard.
Might you have time to help, to volunteer? VOLUNTEER to: • Drop off new toys at the YMCA through mid-December. • Ask your friends, family, neighbors and colleagues to do the same. • Be hands on, helping sort, bag, distribute, or facilitate pick-up Friday, December 2 at the Pelham YMCA, or December 10, 12-15 at the YMCA Youth Center. Youth Volunteer Day at the Youth Center, Saturday, December 10, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Help sort Santa’s first drop-off of toys, in preparation for the beginning of pick-up week! This is a great volunteer opportunity for school, church, and youth service groups. For more information on all volunteer options, call David Hill at 801-7209.
Special thanks to Tuscaloosa YMCA Volunteer Lee Henderson, who connected Coach Nick Saban and his wife, Terry, to area YMCAs and youth. Nick’s Kids Fund contributed $3,000 to the Birmingham YMCA and hosted an exciting event at Bryant Denny Stadium, making lifelong Bama fans of these excited YMCA kids! Your contribution paid for her swimming lessons. Those boys who needed a solid, male role model? Your donation paid their Y sports registration fees, providing a new view of the world along with coaches who have become their heros. More people are saying, ‘We belong’ because you said, ‘Yes’ when asked to give to the Y.

I know that when our members are here working out they are really leaving the “real world” outside. They are putting themselves, their health and wellbeing first. They are focusing on the pool, the class, the treadmill, the machine, the racquetball game, the track, whatever it is at the Y that keeps them healthy. I am so glad that they choose to spend part of their day at the Y.

We all know this long term member; he has struggled with weight loss for years because he could never find exercise that he enjoyed. He started Zumba two years ago; you can see him at any number of branches in a class; he’s one of the few men! He attributes his healthy lifestyle, and weight loss, to the fun he has in Zumba, saying “exercise doesn’t have to be something you dread.” MARY CASAIRO, Group Exercise Coordinator, Mountain Brook YMCA

The paralyzing effects of a stroke brought a man to the Western Area YMCA. Forced to use a cane, his doctor suggested he try walking to strengthen his legs. After six months he wasn’t using his cane as much; after ten, he left them at home! Even better; he had a whole new addition to his family— his YMCA family—to share his joy and accomplishment. The YMCA connects people in different ways. One of my high school teachers joined the Mountain Brook YMCA; we hadn’t seen each other in years. She said that she was going through a difficult divorce, but that the YMCA saved her life by being a place where she could come to walk and be around people. Imagine my surprise when, within a year, she met someone at the pool and they became engaged. KRISTIE NIX, Membership Director, Mountain Brook YMCA

Our family has really enjoyed the YMCA in Alabaster. Anthony Lightsey introduced us to the “Pathways” program. He plotted an “exercise plan” for my husband, for me and for our son. It gave us first-timers a “starting point.” We go the Y as a family, and exercise at our own pace. We definitely see improvement in our health. We are excited about the additional improvements and changes to come; especially the children’s gym and the swimming pool. A MEMBER’S EXPERIENCE at the Alabaster YMCA

Just listen to our young people. Afterschool at the Youth Center is filled with “GroupTalk,” counselors (and sometimes young professional volunteers) speak with our students on the importance of making good decisions, choosing the right friends, and building a good reputation. Every age group engages in age-appropriate dialogue and the impact is enormous. We started the school year out having to convince them that GroupTalk is cool, but now many of them get upset if we don’t have it!
539 Summer Day Campers. 192 New Swimmers. 1,297 After School Kids. Their participation was made possible by YMCA financial assistance.

“I’m a single-mom searching for a job, and in need of summer assistance for my eight year old son”. This is an increasingly common thing we hear from parents. But when you’re told, ‘The YMCA can help with your financial concerns and provide a safe, fun, and productive summer program at the same time,’ you see and feel why we do what we do, and understand who we are to our community. MICKAL THOMAS Associate Executive Director, Shades Valley YMCA
One of the things Y staff members like Mickal appreciate the most is knowing that their workplace won’t turn qualified financial assistance applicants away from any of our programs. Three brothers were able to come to camp, thanks to the Vestavia YMCA summer camp scholarship fund. During their week at Cosby, we learned that their parents had both died just months earlier. All three excelled; winning awards in their activities and cabin groups. They loved the silly side of camp and singing camp songs. The oldest was a peacemaker and acted as a mediator when cabin conflicts came up. The youngest loved to clean and lead his cabin to win the golden dust pan award for cleanest cabin. They were able to be just kids for the week. And we were better for it. KEVIN CASEY, Director, YMCA Camp Cosby

YMCA scholarships don’t just impact our member branches; in 2011, hundreds of children got to be ‘camp kids’ for a full week when their families received financial assistance.

YOUTH & FAMILY CENTER CAMPAIGN The YMCA is opening new doors to meet the needs of the growing Shelby County communities. For over 40 years, the Y has been a leading provider of programs for youth and families in Shelby County. And now we are growing to meet the increasing demand for services in Alabaster and surrounding communities. In response to the needs in this underserved area, the YMCA has launched a $2.2 million capital campaign to develop a Youth and Family Center at the new Alabaster Family YMCA. Once fully developed, the YMCA will be able to provide its programs to thousands more families and children. A full facility YMCA in this growing area will serve as a community common ground bringing together people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Thanks to the generosity of the following leadership donors, we’re over halfway to our $2.2 million goal!

“
The YMCA is a trusted name and we support its mission. It’s not just about health and wellness, it’s a family gathering spot and a place to connect with your community.”
CHAD SCROGGINS, Shelby County Community Health Foundation
NOTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE The Alabaster Family Branch will soon be able to make room for everyone interested in joining the 5 p.m. Zumba class. if you’ve ever arrived late to a class, you know what that experience is like—make room for families needing Afterschool care for their children, and provide a place for retirees to meet. A half million dollar grant from the Shelby County Community Health Foundation will help assure it. As the lead gift of the capital campaign to expand the year-old YMCA, the foundation grant is earmarked to provide expanded Afterschool programs to children in need of a safe and healthy environment after the bell rings, exercise-based programs for the area’s growing senior population, and programs for young people in the Shelby County Day Program, a youth services center designed to help troubled adolescents and their families, explained board member and Environmental Services Supervisor for Shelby County.
“Throughout our community there is a variety of health related needs for seniors and for safe and effective after school programs. We have a lot of parents moving into the community with children who need after school programs but don’t know where to go, and this facility is going to provide those opportunities,” Scroggins said. The grant will be administered, he said, over five years, with the goal of making health and wellness programs accessible throughout Alabaster and keeping up with demand as the community grows. Scroggins says he believes this grant will go a long way toward improving the overall health and wellbeing of Shelby County. “We’ve made capital investments before, but nothing like this,” Scroggins said. “This is a great opportunity for the Community Health Foundation to partner with the YMCA and we feel confident we can supply the community with the health and wellness programs it needs.” November-December 2011 | YLife Birmingham | 19

Personal Training Weight loss and fitness goals are both deeply rooted in the Holiday season. If you’re like me , you may have friends or family who say, “I could do it if I… just had someone to keep me going”. Believe it or not, this is very common amongst those that find fitness as a daily routine or those that struggle with getting started. Personal training is not just about the 1 hour, 3 times a week that the trainer and trainee spend together. It’s about having someone to help you make a lifestyle change… Becoming accountable to yourself long after the trainer is gone. The idea is to get you jump started in the right path. Make the decision to make a change, if not for you then for someone else! CONTACT Mickal Thomas at 803-1808 or mthomas@ymcabham.org.

Estate Planning Assistance Jim Basinger is 88 years young and has been a faithful member of the Downtown Y for more than 50 years. Ruth, his wife of 57 years says “I credit Jim’s youthful looks, stamina and vitaIity in large part to his years of working out 4 to 5 days a week at the Y.” Jim and Ruth knew the estate tax laws will be changing again in January 2013 and needed to update their wills. They were surprised to find that they could get help doing this through a service provided at theYMCA for no charge. They met with the local Thompson Estate Planning representative once a month over the last several months and were very happy with the results.
The Basingers
They said “ Our rep did an excellent job with our estate planning. We learned of so many things that we had never thought about before. She has such a thorough knowledge of all aspects of planning an estate and presented it in laymen’s terms, making it easy for us to follow and to follow through on. We appreciated her patience with us and giving us the satisfaction of knowing that our family will be taken care of when the time comes. This is a wonderful service!”
If you would like to hear how this free service works, please call Leigh Laser Collins at 801-6053 to schedule a no obligation appointment. Thompson & Associates Estate Planning Consultants does not solicit charitable gifts nor do they sell any type of product or service. Their only objective is helping you complete your final plans based solely on your personal goals and values, and the process is completely confidential.
