I
’VE travelled all over the world and seen many interesting tactics used to successfully nail superb fish. There’s so much we can learn from anglers in other countries – and that’s exactly what I want to share with you via these pages. This month I’m recalling a trip to Wyoming – a state famed for being one of the most remote and few remaining natural wildernesses in North America. Fishing a secret location in the Wind River Indian Reservation I target the wild specimens that live here in a high desert canyon during the productive spring months. The trip starts with a long drive from Denver, Colorado, over the state border into Wyoming, where a blue-bird sky rapidly morphs into polar conditions. It’s early April here, which pretty much translates as the dead of winter in the high deserts of Wyoming.
Treacherous drive My fishing buddy is local to Colorado and knows both the area, the fishery and the drive very well – it is one of his favourite home waters. That said, none of that makes me any less anxious as we drive for hours through treacherous wintry conditions, until the roads simply turn into complete ice. Being a veteran of these lands, this does nothing to phase Brandon, as he hurtles towards our destination at the same pace as when we were on clearer and more comfortable roads only hours before.
“The vastness and unpopulated lands mean one thing – very little fishing pressure.”

The drive to this river is long and the countryside is vast, personified by the complete lack of people living here and the towns that support them. Our destination is the Wind River Reservation, a vast area of land owned by the indigenous AmericanIndian tribes and said to be one of the last wildernesses left in the USA. As any passionate angler would agree, both the vastness and unpopulated lands we are set to reside in for the next few days means one thing – rivers that have seen or have had very little fishing pressure. Which presents an opportunity too hard to turn down. After a two-day, yes, two-day drive, we finally reach a crossroads. This crossroad is a major junction – it has a gas station, a saloon bar, a restaurant and a dilapidated fishing tackle shop. Since departing our overnight layover town, it’s actually the first sign of life we’ve encountered. We stop to fill the tank regardless of our fuel level – to break down out here could perhaps be disastrous.
Warm welcome Brandon calls out that I need to head into the gas station and buy my fishing licence here, from the natives. A little nervous, I MARCH 27 - APRIL 23 | TROUT FISHERMAN 39
