A fight you’ll never forget Mike Thrussell enjoys intense battles with blue sharks on the fly off the Irish coast. You can do the same…

ATCHING a shark take the fly just a few feet away from you is an adrenalin rush. The 60lb-plus blue idles up behind the fly then sucks it straight in. I briefly pull the fly line, then lift the rod to keep steady pressure on to fully set the hook. The shark wildly thrashes its tail on the surface then crash dives at full speed taking all the fly line and a good 50 yards of backing on its first run. It hangs in the water at depth and now I put as much rod pressure on as I can. It shakes its head, then dives again taking another 25 yards of line off the reel. It’s stalemate – shark using its

weight at depth, me leaning backwards slightly to maintain full rod pressure with sweat pouring off my forehead and my forearm aching with pain. The shark turns and lifts a little, giving me the chance to gain some line, but instantly it takes it all back. You let the shark have line when it wants but gain back what you can using short upward pumps of the rod, recovering just inches at a time. I lose count, but the shark makes four or five deep plunging dives, each time requiring heavy pressure to work it upwards. We see the shark, indigo blue with a white belly, deep down, twisting, turning and thrashing its head and tail side to side as it tries to throw the hook.

Typically, within 20 feet of the surface, it sees the boat and crash dives again taking most of the original 50 yards of backing. More hard work, and constant rod pressure brings the fish upwards. Its runs are shallowing, only taking 10 to 20 yards of line at most. Its tooth-filled mouth flashing wide – the little red fly clearly visible in the jaw – it breaks surface, rolls, but is beaten. Keeping rod pressure fully on, I lead the shark to the boatside. The skipper slides the big rope tailer over the shark’s tail to secure it then willing hands chip in to help lift it aboard for scientific tagging and photos prior to a quick release.
