Business Message and fromProfessional the Director

The Meteorology of Change Sunny, blizzard, cloudy, drought, rain, tornado, windy, sleet, snow, thunderstorm, humid, breezy, cool, lightning. This could be a single day in Alabama and other southern states! You wake up to a heat index of 105-degrees with humidity and go to bed with 67-degree temps with rain. We are used to it. Weather changes and we learn to go with it. We adapt when our shopping habits, eating patterns or parenting skills need to change. We are okay even when our favorite restaurant closes, and we have to fnd another one to head to each Friday night. As tough as it is, we must get used to a new t-shirt when our favorite college jersey fnally wears out. But what happens at work? A change initiative is announced and communicated fully to everyone. Support is added to individuals and divisions. Yet, there can be screaming and gnashing of teeth. Some people choose to stand their ground, some voice their disagreement, some people manipulate communication, and some “go underground” with complaining and manipulation. Thank goodness there are always a few ready to board the train for the new destination. How do we best understand the “people side” of change? There are three very distinct stages humans go through when a change is determined to be the best course of action. We must understand these stages if we are going to efect change. William Bridges, author of Transitions and Managing Transitions, says, “Managing and leading change does not mean controlling it, but rather understanding it, supporting and facilitating it where necessary and guiding it when possible.” First is the “Ending” stage. Yes, change starts with ending the old way or old process. It does not start with the new “thing.” The Ending stage is where people grieve (used loosely) the past – the ease of knowing how to do something, the familiarity of the old way, maybe even feel threatened because of what that meant to their position or status. There is a defned period where people feel lost, dread something new, or are sad they will not continue with the easy way of “we have always done it like this.” Symptoms of the Ending include anger, resistance, doubt, distrust, uncertainty and the formation of subgroups. Leaders need to over communicate regarding their support, details of the change plan and individual discussions. This can take months to a year to walk through depending on the size of the change. The second stage is called the “Neutral Zone.” However, “neutral” may not always be calm. People have come to see the change will occur, has a few benefts, will be a lot of work, may change their power, may afect their work, and/or will have diferent results than the old way. Symptoms include resistance, anxiety, reemergence of old weaknesses, overload, polarity, complaining and frustration. Sound like a party? No celebration here. Leaders need to stay the course with the change, demonstrate courageous leadership, be available for discussions and presentations, send update emails on how things are progressing and more. This is when most leaders think things are falling apart. This is simply part of the progress or walking through change from the human side of change – whether the change is structural, process, technology or strategy. This stage may take up to a year or two depending on the impact of the change on people. Third and lastly, comes the “Beginning” stage. Most people have adopted the change into their normal business day or routine. They still need support, but managers and employees are moving forward and utilizing the change efectively. Symptoms? Increase in performance and productivity, people are not skipping a beat at work, everyone is on the path moving forward. Now it is time to celebrate the change as complete. Please note what William Bridges says, “People only make the new beginning if they have frst made an ending and spent some time in the neutral zone.” At Continuing Education and Outreach, we are about change. We assist clients in creating a change plan and how to manage the “people” side of change regardless of the change initiative – technology, structure, strategy or process. If your ofce is experiencing a stormy day, we can bring in the sunshine. If you are in a drought, we can bring the rain. Contact CE&O. It will be the best change you make! PH.D. IN GLOBAL LEADERSHIP ANNOUNCED FOR TROY ONLINE Applications will be accepted starting Jan. 2 , 2019 for Troy University’s new doctoral program, the Ph.D. in Global Leadership. The program has received final approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, clearing the way for enrollment to begin with an anticipated start date of Fall 2020 for the first class of students. “This is an exciting new program for Troy University and the College of Education, and we are looking forward to opening up applications this January and welcoming our first class of Global Leadership students next fall,” said Dr. Dionne Rosser-Mims, Dean of the College of Education. To be alerted when applications are available, prospective students should go to troy.edu/globalleadership and complete the interest form. The Global Leadership Ph.D. can be completed online, offering a way for working professionals to earn a doctoral degree. It is TROY’s third doctoral program, joining the Doctor of Nursing Practice and the Doctor of Philosophy in Sport Management. Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor, said Troy University’s evolution as Alabama’s International University—with its partnerships with 135 universities in 31 nations—provided the genesis for TROY’s latest doctoral program. “This Ph.D. is a response to a need for leadership with an international perspective in diverse areas— education, the military, business and the non-profit sector,” Chancellor Hawkins said. “A key feature of this program is a mentorship component where students will learn from a leader with experience in their field. This approach combined with global emphasis will prepare each candidate to succeed in the international marketplace.” The program aims to help students develop a variety of leadership skills and competencies, including effective leadership for organizational change, facilitation of global teams, effective communication, and improving organizational effectiveness. Students will complete core coursework and choose a specialization in one of the following areas: Public Administration, Organizational Leadership, Strategic Communication, Educational Leadership and Administration, or Higher Education.

“The approval of our Ph.D. in Global Leadership represents another significant step in the evolution of our graduate academic inventory,” said Dr. Lance Tatum, Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. “This degree program gives TROY its third terminal degree program and specifically provides an advanced degree option for our College of Education, the founding college of our University. I’m excited for our education alumni who have for many years expressed interest in the University developing this type of program. I want to express my appreciation to the faculty and administration in our College of Education for the work and thoughtfulness that went into the development of this program.” TROY’s Global Leadership doctorate will be unique in the state of Alabama and is designed to develop leaders from diverse backgrounds that will serve locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. That global focus includes encouraging students to pursue international internships, said Dr. Rosser-Mims. “This is an incredible opportunity for students and for the College of Education,” Dr. Rosser-Mims said. “We will be preparing individuals to lead organizations across a variety of disciplines, and to communicate effectively with diverse teams across cultural lines. We want students to understand leadership from a global perspective.”

Learn more about TROY’s Ph.D. in Global Leadership at troy.edu/globalleadership. Applications open January 2, 2020.
