News You Can Use... Staying Power Most companies conduct some form of exit interview. In the word “exit“ we can gather that the timing is when an employee is leaving the company. How many companies conduct “stay” interviews? Why do we always focus on the people who are leaving our organizations instead of the people that are staying at our organization. In fact, why don’t we ask our highest achieving employees why they choose to stay with us. Here are a few reasons that high achievers stay with the same organization for long periods of time, instead of individuals who jump from job to job. In a world where companies need recruitment and retention strategy, these factors may be the key. l Most professionals realize the number one reason why people leave their positions are poor managers or supervisors. I have
defined the word “poor” as someone who does not know how to motivate, manage and engage employees. When is the last time that you completed a review on your supervisors? Each level of management? I do not mean a typical employee evaluation system. I do mean having someone come in and do an assessment of supervisory needed to improve retention. This may be one of the best ways to maintain a consistent level of high-performing leaders when it comes to retaining high performing employees.
l One reason an employee might move on is to find promotional opportunities quicker than waiting 10 or 20 years for someone
to retire. In this situation, we cannot blame them for becoming disillusioned about a routine job with no challenge for the next several decades. It might be beneficial to implement a career development path or mentoring plan for employees. These planned paths will challenge your employees with meaningful work via task forces, project teams, solution teams and organizational committees. If an employee can’t see a path to continued growth in their current organization, they are likely to look elsewhere.
l Younger generations might stay with your organization because the supervisors and managers mentor them – – not coach – –
mentor. The problem with many organizations is it they have no plan or process for mentorship. In fact, many leaders think that mentoring is nothing more than training. That could not be further from the truth. An experienced and knowledgeable consultant can come into your organization and develop a program tailored to your succession planning needs.
l Another reason that younger generations stay with an organization is due to professional development.
Employees nowadays don’t want some canned program from an HR department or personnel administrative office. They are too advanced for a talking head who recites a procedure manual or textbook. These generations were born with technology and electronic communication at their fingertips. They deserve and demand advanced, engaged and tailored content to their specific industry or career path. This training or professional development needs to active and experiential with exercises, case studies, and group activities.
l Again, to look at workers under the age 45 or 50, we see that employers who favor a social or community cause can offer service
involvement draw people who share the same values. Of course, an organization can volunteer in many nonprofit services. There are companies that grow fruit and vegetables on their property, harvest the plenty, and take them to families in need. The employees enjoy the rapport building time of gardening and then go together to bless the family in need.
l The overall culture of your company makes a difference for employees. Does your organization appreciate employees, treat
them with respect and purpose, recognize positive performance, utilize employee input, provide employee activities and celebrations, have approachable and respected leaders, and communicate in an open and transparent way? Find out what will make employees feel that your organization is a great place to work.
There are all kind of retention and recruitment strategies so your company can hire and maintain “the best.“ The difference between reality and only a dream is action. Focus on why employees stay, not exit. Focus on why employees choose to continue to work in your environment, not leave. Allow Continuing Education and Outreach to be your organizational healer. Our clients’ feedback indicates that CE&O’s speakers, consultants and trainers create action and obtain results for clients. Whether you need professional development, needs assessments, employee surveys, or organizational consulting, we look forward to partnering with you to find solutions for STAYING power.
