2014 SEASON PREVIEW • 5

PEACE, LOVE & MUSIC SOME OF THE CLASS OF 1969 RETURNS Around 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, 1969 an unknown 22 year old, Mexican-American musician and his band stepped onto a stage in an upstate New York alfalfa field. By the time Santana left that stage and before their first album ever hit stores, they’d made a half-million fans and launched a career that would continue to this day.

Just after midnight the first notes of “Born on the Bayou” rang across the darkened, rain-soaked hills as the headliner took the stage before a weary crowd. Creedence Clearwater Revival was one of the biggest bands of the day, but thanks to technical difficulties and the Grateful Dead’s infamously long and confused set, John Fogerty had his work cut out for him. He refused to have the performance

included in the Woodstock film because he felt it was subpar. But 45 years later, he’s back and there’s no doubt this legend will deliver an unforgettable night. Crosby, Stills & Nash was released in May of 1969, rocketing to the top of the charts. The band had performed live just once, so anticipation was high when they took the stage in the wee hours of Monday morning, joined by new band-mate Neil Young. No one imagined those moments would echo through the decades, or that 45 years later these legends would return to perform for some of those CARLOS SANTANA has sold more same ‘kids’ and thousands of new fans. than 100 million records and over 100 million fans have attended his concerts. He’s been honored with 10 Grammys®, the Billboard Century Award and a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He also has a new album, Corazon, tour, and HBO Latino/HBO Latin America special to go with it. It features top Latin artists including Chocquibtown, Gloria Estefan, Pitbull, Soledad, and more.

Mysteryland USA

The world’s longest-running electronic music festival makes its US debut on our hallowed grounds Memorial Day Weekend. Just as Woodstock represented the cultural and music shifts of a new generation, Mysteryland brings together the global forces of dance music, creativity, unity, and social responsibility of today’s youth. The three-day event will be a culturally immersive and engaging experience.

6 • BETHEL WOODS CENTER FOR THE ARTS

JOHN FOGERTY, who penned “Proud Mary,” “Fortunate Son,” “Born On The Bayou,” and “Who’ll Stop The Rain” says that when he tries to write a hit, it doesn’t work until he finds something in himself that resonates. Then the words and the music flow. So, it is interesting that his latest effort is called, A Song for Everyone, which features collaborations with Brad Paisley, Bob Seeger, and My Morning Jacket. Yet, it is still personal. “I love making music. So the idea that I get to do this for a living still, instead of selling insurance, well, that means the world to me.”

DAVID CROSBY, STEPHEN STILLS and GRAHAM NASH are so ingrained in musical history that simply their initials will do. They’ve each been inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, once as Crosby, Stills & Nash, and individually with The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and The Hollies, respectively. They continue to collaborate and work on separate projects. Always provocative, Crosby sums up the years for the group, “I’m older than I’d like and I’m creaky, but I’m doing alright.” This year it all comes full circle. SANTANA returns on JUNE 15; CSN plays on JULY 5 and JOHN FOGERTY hits the stage on AUGUST 8. And a new generation brings a fresh festival experience to this hallowed ground with Mysteryland USA. Inspired by creativity and community, sustainability, and equality, it will carry the torch forward uniting the past, present, and future in a shared love of live music.

JOSH GROBAN

With his sixth studio album, All That Echoes, JOSH GROBAN has built on the touchstone artistry that has made him a global pop star for more than a decade and expanded his ambitious reach into richly rewarding new territory. To no one’s surprise, the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The inspiring first single “Brave,” one of seven songs on the album he co-wrote, shows off his accomplished, personal songwriting. From the Academy Award-winning “Falling Slowly” from the movie and Tony Award-honored spin-off Broadway musical Once, to Stevie Wonder’s “I Believe,” through his continued explorations of the poetry of Spanish (“Un Alma Mas,” featuring Cuban-born trumpet great Arturo Sandoval), and Italian (“E Ti Prometterò,” a duet with Italian star Laura Pausini), spotlight his singular talents as a masterful interpreter. “The album was really sparked by an energy I had on the road,” he says of his 2010 Illumination tour. It’s when his writing and ambition took full flower.

The Office, a sparkling part in the Steve Carrell/Julianne Moore film “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” and a as costar of the upcoming smallensemble comedy “Coffee Town.” Groban recorded his first album, Josh Groban, in November 2001. It was certified multi-platinum and he’s never looked back. His next three releases Closer, 2003; Awake, 2006; and Noel, 2007 were all certified multi-platinum, and in 2007, he was charted as the number-one best selling artist in the United States with over 21 million records in the nation. To date, he has sold over 25 million records worldwide. Similar in spirit to Bethel Woods’ own mission, Groban launched the nonprofit organization Find Your Light Foundation in 2011, to “enrich the lives of young people through arts, education and cultural awareness.”

On SATURDAY, AUGUST 23 this outstanding arts advocate brings us a truly special evening.

Those concerts were playful, intimate, and powerful, with measures of musical virtuosity and spirited, spontaneous personality. It brought him a rising career in movies and television, with recurring guest role on

RIDE THE MECHANICAL BULL WITH

KINGS OF LEON Three-time Grammy Award winner, KINGS OF LEON are touring this summer in support of their sixth studio album, Mechanical Bull, which Rolling Stone describes as touching on “the group’s identities of the past decade: revved-up garage rockers, Southern-soul disciples, masters of arena bombast.”

When Kings of Leon released their third album Because Of The Times in April 2007, Entertainment Weekly called it their “crowning achievement,” while Rolling Stone wondered: “How good can the Kings of Leon get? They’ve already gone further than anybody could have guessed.” This Tennessee quartet of brothers Caleb, Nathan, and Jared Followill and their first cousin Matthew, burst onto the alternative rock scene in 2000. The three Followill brothers grew up in Tennessee with their father, a Pentecostal minister, and their mother, Betty-Ann. Much of their young lives were spent on the road through the southern United States wherever dad, Ivan was preaching. When their parents divorced in 1997, Nathan and Caleb relocated to Nashville and embraced rock music and the

lifestyle they had previously been denied. There they met songwriter Angelo Petraglia who helped them hone their songwriting skills and introduced them to the musical influences of Thin Lizzy, The Rolling Stones, and The Clash. Youngest brother Jared and cousin Matthew moved to Nashville in 1999 to join them, and Kings was formed.

They gained fame in 2003 through their first album Youth & Young Manhood, scoring a UK Top 40 hit with “Molly’s Chambers,” But it was 2004’s A-Ha Shake Heartbreak (which peaked at No. 25 on the Billboard 200) that landed the band a spot on U2’s 2005 North American tour in 2005. Since then, the Kings have been enjoying astonishing world-wide success. They sold out Radio City Music Hall and the Greek Theater in Hollywood. In Europe they recently sold out London’s 20,000seat 02 Arena in less than an hour. Said front man and lyricist Caleb: “There’s never a time that we’ll make a record and won’t attempt to do something better than what came before.” Kings of Leon play the Pavilion stage SATURDAY, AUGUST 16 with YOUNG THE GIANT and KONGOS.

SAY HELLO TO LIONEL RICHIE LIONEL RICHIE is the definition of an iconic entertainer recipient of five Grammy® Awards, an Oscar, 16 American Music Awards, a Golden Globe, five People’s Choice Awards, a World Music Lifetime Achievement Award... the list goes on and on. His discography is part of the fabric of American pop music. He has sold 100 million albums worldwide and is one of only two songwriters in history to have a No. 1 record for nine consecutive years. While in college, Richie joined the band, The Mystics—later renamed The Commodores—as their saxophone player. The band’s rise to international success began as the opening act for The Jackson Five. Their first single, “Machine Gun,” released in 1974, reached No. 7 on the US R&B charts. The group went on to have many more chart-topping singles including “Brick House,” “Just To Be Close To You,” and “Too Hot Ta Trot.”

As a songwriter, Richie was known for his ability to write without genre boundaries, a talent demonstrated in the success of mega hits such as, “Three Times A Lady,”“Stuck On You,” “Lady,” “Still,” and “Easy.” Richie released his eighth studio album Coming Home in September 2006. The album’s first single, “I Call It Love” became his biggest hit in the U.S. in ten years, peaking at No. 6. In 2012, Richie reworked some of his biggest hits as duets with country music superstars like Shania Twain, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, Darius Rucker, and Little Big Town. The album, entitled Tuskegee, reached No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 list. Today, Lionel Richie continues to push his music forward while continuing to thrill his loyal fans. Say “Hello” on SATURDAY, AUGUST 2 on the Pavilion stage with CEELO GREEN.

In 1981, Richie began his solo career, becoming one of the most successful artists of the 1980s. He earned 13 top ten hits with nine No. 1 singles including “Endless Love,” “Truly,” “All Night Long,” “Hello,” and “Say You (Say Me).” His 1982 self-titled album started a run of platinum plus albums throughout the ’80s, with 1986’s “Dancing On The Ceiling” becoming a pop and R&B classic. He also co-wrote—with Michael Jackson—the Live-Aid classic, “We Are The World.”

The title is more is more than just a song on the album. “Platinum is my hair color, my wedding ring, the color of my Airstream, and the name of one of my favorite beers,” says Lambert. “It’s about a lifestyle.” “Automatic,” the first single from Platinum, got off to a historic start, debuting at No. 35 and No. 26 respectively on the Country Aircheck and Billboard country airplay charts. Miranda, who wrote half of the songs, describes the album like this: “All 16 songs together make up a picture, and without one of those songs, it just looks like abstract art,” she said. “I wanted it to be perfect; I wanted it to matter,” she continued. “There’s humor on this album, and nostalgia, and it’s feminine.”

Non-compliance will be cause for removal from the facility. Once I enter the venue, can I leave and return? For safety reasons, Bethel Woods has a “no reentry policy”. We recommend that our guests bring the items they will need with them and a light sweater or jacket, as evenings can get cooler. Can I visit the museum and go to a Pavilion Stage concert on the same day? Yes, you can visit the museum and attend a Pavilion Stage concert on the same day. Due to popular demand, museum visitation during a Pavilion Stage concert day is high. The Museum at Bethel Woods will offer $5 admission two hours prior to any evening concert with a valid concert ticket. The Museum at Bethel Woods is an immersive, highly interactive experience and we suggest that you plan at least two hours for your visit through the main exhibit gallery. continued on page 29

While Keith’s success is evident, the country music superstar’s dedication to giving back is his most impressive accomplishment. He’s an active supporter of the armed forces, performing and visiting troops worldwide with the USO. His charitable organization, The Toby Keith Foundation, provides support to patients and families living with pediatric cancer in his home state of Oklahoma. No matter the cause, Keith tackles it with the same commitment, heart, and soul he’s dedicated to his legendary music career.
