BYRD/SKOLNICK: A TALE OF TWO POSTERS
Four decades after Woodstock, The Museum at Bethel Woods presents a RETROSPECTIVE EXHIBITION that examines the work of DAVID EDWARD BYRD and ARNOLD SKOLNICK on display THROUGH JULY 22, 2012. The iconic images of these two important artists are brought together for the first time, along with many of the artworks inspired by their posters for the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair. As the Woodstock Music and Art Fair established itself as the watershed moment for the generation of the 1960s, Arnold Skolnick’s “dove and guitar” design for the festival poster and logo became an icon—one that is still highly recognizable today. Skolnick’s simple design stood in stark contrast to the original design for the festival poster, designed by Fillmore East house artist David Edward Byrd, whose ornate, foliated design featured a full-frontal nude depiction of a woman pouring water from an urn. Byrd’s design for “An Aquarian Exposition” was not widely distributed and was, therefore, not well known, overshadowed by Skolnick’s iconic design. In addition to their Woodstock posters, the exhibition includes a retrospective of approximately 100 examples of the broad range of Byrd’s and Skolnick’s artwork — rock posters and posters for Broadway shows, TV, and movies, impressionistic oil paintings drawn from nature, books about art, and sensitive photographs of erotic nudes. The exhibition also features approximately 50 pieces that represent the myriad posters and artwork inspired by Skolnick’s iconic “dove and guitar” or Byrd’s “Aquarian Exposition” over the past 43 years. Some are humorous; some are outrageous; all are fascinating. This exhibition is a must-see for every Woodstock fan, poster collector, art historian or student, art lover, or follower of pop culture.

THE BEACH BOYS BRING THEIR HISTORIC 50TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR TO BETHEL
The founding members of THE BEACH BOYS, one of the world’s most legendary pop music bands in history, reunites this summer bringing their 50th Anniversary celebration to Bethel Woods Center for the Arts on SUNDAY, JUNE 17 at 7:30 PM. Fans can expect to hear hit classics including, “Surfin’ USA,” “I Get Around,” “California Girls,” and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.” Beach Boys Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, and David Marks have recorded new songs for the as-yet-untitled album to be released this year. It will be the first in decades to feature all of the band’s surviving original members and is being produced by Brian Wilson with executive producer Mike Love. The Beach Boys and Capitol/EMI have also teamed up for a 50th Anniversary campaign spotlighting the band’s entire catalog, with several new commemorative releases planned for 2012, including a new hits collection and a career-spanning box set. Founded in Hawthorne, California in 1961, The Beach Boys were originally comprised of the three teenaged Wilson brothers: Brian, Carl, and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love, and school friend Al Jardine. In 1962, neighbor David Marks joined the group for their first wave of hits on Capitol Records, leaving in late 1963, and in 1965, Bruce Johnston joined the band when Brian Wilson retired from touring to focus on writing and producing records for the group. The Beach Boys signed with Capitol Records in July 1962 and released their first album, Surfin’ Safari, that same year. The album spent 37 weeks on the Billboard chart, launching the young group into international stardom. The Wilson/Love collaboration resulted in many huge international chart hits, and under Brian Wilson’s musical leadership, the band’s initial surf-rock focus was soon broadened to include other themes, making The Beach Boys America’s preeminent band of the 1960s. The Beach Boys continue to hold Billboard / Nielsen SoundScan’s record as the top-selling American band for albums and singles, and they are also the American group with the most Billboard Top 40 chart hits with 36. Sounds Of Summer: The Very Best Of The Beach Boys is fast approaching triple-Platinum sales status, and The SMiLE Sessions, released to worldwide critical acclaim in November, has been heralded as 2011’s #1 Reissue of the Year by Rolling Stone magazine. The Beach Boys are an American institution that is iconic around the world. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and are recipients of The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement GRAMMY Award. 37
RELIVE THE ’90s THIS SUMMER AT BETHEL WOODS WOODSTOCK LEGEND
EVERCLEAR has teamed up with Sugar Ray, Gin Blossoms, LIT and Marcy Playground to bring you Summerland Tour 2012 on FRIDAY, JULY 20 at 7:30PM. Rock out to chart-topping singles that are still spun in regular rotation today on alternative rock radio.
JOE COCKER RETURNS TO BETHEL
Though Everclear’s Northwestern grungepunk style was hardly revolutionary when the band rose to popularity in 1995, the trio’s hook-ridden songs and Art Alexakis’ “us against them” lyrics were taken to heart by bored Gen-X teens. Everclear’s sound reflected the rock, post-punk, and singer/ songwriter influences of front man Alexakis, including acts like X, the Replacements, the Pixies, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, and Elvis Costello. Also instrumental to Everclear’s success was the group’s obsessive touring schedule and aggressive self-promotion tactics. After Everclear’s Sparkle and Fade album was certified platinum, the band solidified their place in rock with hits like “Santa Monica,” “Everything to Everyone,” “I Will Buy You a New Life,” “Father of Mine” and “Wonderful.” Everclear has sold more than 9 million albums globally. Fronted by Alexakis, Everclear remains a potent force on the touring circuit. The band’s first original album in six years, will be released in time for the Summerland tour. The Summerland tour promises to be one of the summer’s most energetic and nostalgic. With tons of smash hit songs and millions of albums sold between them, the five bands are still a constant presence on the airwaves across the country and represent a true value for concert fans.

WOODSTOCK LEGEND
RETURNS TO BETHEL British soul singer JOE COCKER parlayed Ray Charles-type vocals and an eccentric stage presence into a string of late-’60s hits, suffered in the mid-’70s, and went from tragic figure to well-respected interpreter in the ‘80s and ‘90s. His gritty, powerful voice remains one of the most distinctive in rock & roll today and can be heard on SUNDAY, AUGUST 5 at 7:30 PM at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. Cocker entered the big time with a groundbreaking rearrangement of “With a Little Help from My Friends,” a Beatles cover, from the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album, featuring lead guitar from Jimmy Page. His explosive performance of the song at Woodstock in 1969 was a festival highlight. Throughout 1969 he was featured on variety TV shows like The Ed Sullivan Show and This Is Tom Jones. Onstage, he exhibited a physical intensity, flailing his arms and playing air guitar, occasionally giving superfluous cues to his band. Cocker later performed “Feelin’ Alright” on Saturday Night Live where John Belushi joined him on stage doing his famous impersonation of Cocker’s stage movements. After more than 40 years in the music business, Joe Cocker is still one of the most successful and popular artists worldwide. Many of his 21 studio albums and four live albums have achieved multiplatinum status around the world. Some of his greatest hits include “You Are So Beautiful,” “Delta Lady,” “Cry Me A River,” “The Letter” with Leon Russell, and a duet with Jennifer Warnes, “Up Where We Belong,” from the movie An Officer and a Gentleman. His releases have received Grammy Awards, Golden Globes, and Academy Awards. In 2007 he was handed the “Order of the British Empire (OBE).” In short: he’s a legend. Joe Cocker released his Sony Music debut album entitled Hard Knocks in November 2011. The album, produced by Matt Serletic (Matchbox Twenty, Rob Thomas, Collective Soul, Carlos Santana) includes nine brand new songs plus Cocker’s version of the Dixie Chicks song “I Hope” produced by Nashville legend Tony Brown. 39
BIG TIME RUSH BIG TIME SUMMER TOUR
In overwhelming response to their sold-out “Better With U Tour,” BIG TIME RUSH will be hitting the road once again with a “Big Time Summer Tour,” stopping at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts on TUESDAY, AUGUST 7 at 7:00 PM. The Nickelodeon stars and Columbia Recording artists will perform songs off their latest album Elevate. Joining Big Time Rush on the stage is emerging Australian pop phenomenon Cody Simpson. Big Time Rush - Kendall Schmidt, James Maslow, Carlos Pena Jr. and Logan Henderson - were recently nominated for Favorite Music Group at the 2012 Kids’ Choice Awards along with LMFAO, Black Eyed Peas, and Lady Antebellum. This is their second nomination in this category. The highly anticipated follow-up to the group’s Gold-certified debut Big Time Rush, Elevate features tracks including “Music Sounds Better With U (featuring Mann),” “Show Me,” and “All Over Again,” plus brand-new music that will debut on upcoming episodes of the TV series. Big Time Rush (BTR) is an American TV series created by Scott Fellows about the Hollywood misadventures of four hockey players from Minnesota after they are selected to form a boy band. Now in its second season, the show averages 3.6 million total viewers. The launch of the hit series on Nickelodeon drew 6.8 million viewers, making it the most watched live-action series premiere in the network’s history. If Big Time Rush has a leader, Kendall is it! Music and dancing are in his blood. He never imagined he’d end up on the brink of superstardom, but he just might enjoy the ride. And if anyone can keep these guys together, it’s Kendall. James can sing but so far, his biggest hits are with the ladies! He dreams big and has the confidence to match. He may be a little clueless at times, but he always looks good doing it. Major plus: great hair! Carlos gets the laughs, though he also picks the fights. With his hockey helmet in tow, he is always ready to go — whether he’s cracking jokes or sticking up for his friends. His heart in the right place! Logan is the brains behind Big Time Rush. Who else is going to handle all that homework? Logan’s the go-to guy for solving problems — and with all the trouble the guys get into, it’s good to have him around. 40
WITH BRAD PAISLEY FRIDAY, AUGUST 10 AT 7:30PM THE BAND PERRY’S “modern throwback” style combines classic Country with an eclectic infusion of rock, gospel, and soul. As songwriters and musicians, their sound is rounded out by perfect three-part harmonies. The self-titled debut album, The Band Perry, released in October 2010 by Republic Nashville, has been certified Platinum. They are writing and recording their sophomore album, due out later this year. The Band Perry currently is the reigning 2011 ACM New Artist of the Year as well as the CMA New Artist of the Year. They earned the 2011 CMA Award for Single of the Year and Kimberly Perry was honored with the 2011 CMA Song of the Year award. Other honors include the 2011 CMT Music Award for Breakthrough Video of the Year, the Best New Live Act Award sponsored by Nationwide Insurance, as well as TEEN CHOICE, AMA and ACA award nominations. On the heels of celebrating a recent two-week #1 with their Gold-certified single, “All Your Life,” and a Platinum debut album, the RIAA has certified their #1 smash, “If I Die Young,” Quadruple Platinum for sales exceeding 4 million. The breakout hit is the only single from a debut album in the last 18 months to achieve this status and has sold more copies than any other country artist in the same timeframe. Each member of the trio stresses how much family figures into the mix: “Reid, Neil, and I share genes and a musical pedigree,” Kimberly explains. “We read the same classics and cook from the same recipes. With all of our likenesses, though, I believe it’s our distinctions that stir up the magic when we create. When we sit down to write songs together, we pull from our individual perspectives and happenstances to create the most interesting song concoctions.”

FIRST AMERICAN IDOL SOARS TO STARDOM Global superstar KELLY CLARKSON and Grammy nominated THE FRAY are joining forces for a co-headlining summer tour, with special guest Carolina Liar. The tour will include a stop at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts on SUNDAY, AUGUST 19 at 7:00 PM. Kelly Clarkson burst onto the music scene 10 years ago, after appearing on and winning the first season of American Idol. “When I auditioned, my apartment in Los Angeles had recently burned down and I had a box of photographs to my name,” Kelly says. “I figured I’d get to sing and make some money to pay the bills. Nobody thought that show was going to be what it is now.”Since then, Kelly has released 5 studio albums (Thankful, Breakaway, My December, All I Ever Wanted, Stronger), sold over 20 million albums worldwide, 10 million albums in the US and has had 10 singles in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. She is the recipient of 2 Grammy Awards, 4 American Music Awards, 3 MTV Video Music Awards, 2 Academy of Country Music Awards, 1 Country Music Association Award and 12 Billboard Music Awards. Kelly’s most recent effort Stronger debuted at #2 on both the Billboard Top 200 and Digital Albums Chart. The album is certified Gold by the R.I.A.A. and produced the smash singles, “Mr. Know It All” and “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” which marks Kelly’s 9th and 10th Top 10 hit. “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” was #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart for two consecutive weeks (3 weeks total) marking her 3rd #1 on the Hot 100 chart after 2002’s “A Moment Like This” and 2009’s “My Life Would Suck Without You.” Kelly is currently touring the US, mentoring for Team Blake on NBC’s The Voice and will star in ABC’s new reality competition, Duets this summer. Kelly’s third single from the album will be “Dark Side.”

LET’S GET THIS THING STARTED ON AUGUST 26 WITH MULTI-PLANTIUM COUNTRY ROCKER
WITH SPECIAL GUESTS LUKE BRYAN, RACHEL FARLEY AND DEE JAY SILVER For anyone looking to brand JASON ALDEAN as part of a significant musical movement, good luck. There’s a lot about the singer that’s become familiar during his five years as a country hit maker, who has spent more weeks at number one on the charts than any other country artist in the last 12 months. But, none of what he does comes out quite like anyone else: the blues-tinged licks at the end of his phrases… the smoky guitar riffs that have become a signature… and the small-town themes that pervade many of his songs… done with unwavering honesty. With MY KINDA PARTY, the Academy of Country Music’s former Top New Male Vocalist further cements his uniqueness with 15 robust tracks that build on his personal past while covering new territory. The first single fits very quickly into the jacked-up portion of his concert set list, which already boasts “She’s Country,” “Crazy Town” and “Johnny Cash.” But there’s other stylistic landscape to explore, his first full-fledged duet, “Don’t You Wanna Stay” with pop singer Kelly Clarkson; and an almost rap segment in “Dirt Road Anthem” that suggests Aldean has listened to Snoop Dogg in his time. That might come as a shock to non-country observers who think the genre belongs in its own self-imposed hay-bale ‘hood, but Aldean gets around musically. He was the first country artist of any significance to incorporate Guns N’ Roses medleys into his live show and his listening history includes such diverse talents as Aerosmith, the Oak Ridge Boys and even Tupac Shakur. MY KINDA PARTY, is stocked with inviting melodies and intriguing small-town storylines that have become the backbone of his persona. He’s not part of some musical wave. He is his own movement. “That’s what it’s all about,” Aldean shrugs, “knowing what it is that sets you apart from everybody else.” 43
ACROSS THE GREAT DIVIDE PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROBERTA PRICE
THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 2012 THRU MONDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2012 A loving photographic diary of Roberta Price’s seven years as a resident of Libre, a commune in the Huerfano Valley in northern New Mexico/southern Colorado. What had begun as a grant-funded research project to explore and photograph communes in New Mexico and Colorado, became a personal journey. Price joined Libre, a community of artists and writers, and lived there for almost seven years, taking more than 3,000 photos, all of which provide a unique view of commune life through the eyes of a participant. Price’s images of Drop City, New Buffalo, Reality Construction Company, Libre, the Red Rockers and other southwestern communes provide visual evidence of the great divide that separated Price and her generation from the families and conventional communities in which they had grown up. They are an eyewitness report of a youthful energy manifested in the work, art, architecture, and play in some of the rural communities, and the societal energy in the cultural forces swirling up in that period. Ms. Price lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico where she is an intellectual property attorney. She is an award-winning author, speaker, and photographer. Her 2004 book Huerfano: A Memoir of Life in the Counterculture was a Top Ten University Press Book that year. Her second book Across the Great Divide: A Photo Chronicle of the Counterculture won the Forward gold medal in 2010. Ms. Price’s photo collection will become a part of the Yale University Beinecke Library permanent collection, following this exhibition. The Museum at Bethel Woods is a proud co-sponsor of this exhibition tour along with 516 ARTS, Albuquerque.
