Explore Honesdale Nestled in the rolling hills of the Northern Pocono Mountains, Honesdale, PA is both the geographic and economic center of Wayne County. Steeped in history, its downtown and main streets retain the feeling of a bygone era, adding a special charm to modern-day life in a town of about 5,000 people. (www. visithonesdalepa.com and www. visitwaynecounty.com). As the county seat in a county of about 50,000 people, Honesdale is the center of commerce and county government. The 1880s Second Empire architectural style courthouse (and its adjoining modern annex) overlook the town’s picturesque Central Park. Find a park bench to sit and enjoy the gentle sound of the elegant fountain that graces the center of the park. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair to any of the summer concerts in the park (wccac.wordpress.com) including the annual Roots and Rhythm Music and Arts Festival in June (www. honesdalerootsandrhythm.com) that welcomes thousands of concert goers to Central Park and to other music venues scattered throughout town that day. Take a stroll along North Main Street and admire the stately Victorianera homes that hark back to the heyday of Pennsylvania’s booming 19th and early 20th Anthracite coal industry, when black gold mined in PA counties to the West was shipped by canal from Honesdale to New York City. Learn more about the area’s rich history by visiting the Wayne County Historical Society 2
Museum at 810 Main Street (www. waynehistorypa.org), which houses a replica of the first steam locomotive to run on rails in the U.S. Or wander Main Street to browse and shop in locally owned shops, art galleries and antique stores. Bargain hunters will delight in the search for treasures in a handful of thrift and consignment stores. Several sidewalk and street fairs (www.visitwaynecounty.com/ events) draw regional vendors to sell their homemade and artisan wares on special days during the summer and fall months. Honesdale also is home to two summertime farmers’ markets (www.facebook. com/pages/Wayne-County-FarmersMarket/342783086762 and www. thecooperageproject.org) and one indoor winter market, attracting the ever growing numbers of people to purchase locally grown food produced by Wayne County farmers and small food processors and entrepreneurs. Every August, thousands are drawn to Honesdale for the hottest entertainment ticket of the summer— the Wayne County Fair (www. waynecountyfair.com). Country music acts and ever-popular events like the tractor pull and demolition derby celebrate the area’s rural roots and fun-lovin’ sense of country life, or just come to enjoy the amusement rides and food favorites. Whatever your favorite pastimes may be, you’re likely to find a destination or activity to please you as you explore Honesdale.

10 Things to Do in Honesdale Wayne County Fair
This summer marks the 152nd year for the Wayne County Fair. Think about it: this country tradition has been taking place here since 1862. The fair boasts many classic carnival rides and games, offering a chance to win prizes; live entertainment; favorite fair foods (funnel cake, anyone?!); agricultural and home gardener exhibits, farm animals and thrill shows. Some of the events include a tractor pull, horsepulling contest, demolition derby, woodsmen’s competition, harness racing, lawnmower racing and more. The musical entertainment this year is country music artist Craig Campbell with special guest Eric Paslay, as well as other musicians on the small stage. A popular draw to the fair is the 4-H Wayne County Junior Livestock Association showing of animals and livestock sale on Saturday, August 9 at 10 a.m. The fair takes place on the fairgrounds on Route 191 north of town from August 1 to 9 from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. An all-day pass costs $8. Visit www. waynecountyfair.com.
Harvest and Heritage Days, leaf viewing in October
Honesdale’s annual Harvest and Heritage Days festival on Columbus Day weekend fills the town with arts and crafts vendors lining Main Street; live music; food; a chili and wings cook-off contest; scarecrows, pumpkin painting and corn husking contests; a pet parade; hay rides; an antique cars cruise (with more than 80 cars); a Farm + Chef tasting of local food prepared by the region’s chefs, and more. This festival falls during peak leaf-viewing season when autumn colors cover the whole town and surrounding rural countryside.
Irving Cliff
For a panoramic view overlooking the town of Honsedale, visit Irving Cliff, so named after Washington Irving, a visitor to Honesdale who later described the cliff as “a solid ledge of serried and moss-grown slate rock rises almost sheer to the height of nearly 400 feet.” On this site in the 4
1880s, a large hotel was begun. However, less than a month before its grand opening in 1889, the 125-room luxury Irving Cliff Hotel burned to the ground and was never rebuilt. In the present day, the cliff is the site of a 30-foot star, which during the Christmas season shines over the town at night, and during Easter it is replaced with a cross. On the Fourth of July fireworks are shot off from the cliff.
The Cooperage
The Cooperage, home of The Cooperage Project, was built in 1861 by John McKanna, a prominent Honesdale citizen of his day. McKanna was a cooper—a maker of wooden vessels (think barrels, casks, vats, and kegs). These containers were used to ship crystal glassware to destinations across the country. The manufacture of glassware was an important industry in this region during the 19th century. It seems reasonable to assume that the vessels manufactured by The McKanna Cooperage were put to many other purposes as well. The business flourished for about 40 years. After that the property passed through the hands of several owners and has been put to many uses. Today The Cooperage is a performance space, community center and home to a year-round farmers market. The mission of The Cooperage Project is to offer a range of instructive and entertaining activities that will engage, challenge, and enlighten. Check out a concert or an open mic night, Game Night, as well as a wide range of talks, classes and more held at The Cooperage throughout the summer. Visit www.thecooperageproject. org.
Gravity Ice Cream and Bowling
Gravity Ice Cream is the home of the dollar cone. Stop by for some ice cream and food, and then start a game of bowling. The ice cream shop and bowling alley is named after the gravity Railroad. The narrow-gauge railroad carried coal from Carbondale over the Moosic Mountains to the D&H Canal in Honesdale. Construction of the gravity
railroad was completed in 1829. In its final form, the railroad used separate loaded and light tracks. Unpowered trains ran by gravity to the bottom of a grade, where they were attached to a cable and hauled up a short, steep plane by a stationary steam engine. The loaded tracks had planes pointing in the direction of Honesdale; the light tracks had planes pointing in the direction of Carbondale. The gravity railroad operated until 1899, when the canal was abandoned, and was replaced entirely by a new standard gauge line to be used as a conventional steam railroad. Many traces of the tracks remain in the Moosic Mountains. They can still be located on current aerial photographs.
Historical Society and Museum
Be sure to visit The Wayne County Historical Society’s Museum, at 810 Main Street, recognized as a National Historic Landmark. It was originally the
headquarters office for the 108-milelong Delaware & Hudson Canal, which transported coal from Honesdale (mined in Pennsylvania’s anthracite coal region to the west) to the Hudson River at Rondout, NY, where it was carried downstream to New York City. In the museum you will find a replica of the first commercial steam locomotive to run on track in the U.S., enabling Honesdale to call itself the Birthplace of the American Railroading. Special exhibits are always on display. The historical society also maintains a research library, which is a popular resource for people who are tracing their family history, For more information and a list of current exhibits, visit www.waynehistorypa.org.
Prompton State Park
Prompton State Park provides boat launching and picnicking facilities to the 290-acre Prompton Lake, which is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. 26 miles of hiking trails surround the lake. Take a hike, go fishing, biking, boating, hunting and more. Visit www. friendsofprompton.com.
Lake Wanoka Resort
The resort is new and opening this summer. It has cabin rentals and camping sites for visitors (or locals who want to get away for a night or two) as well as a splash pad with daily passes available, an arcade and a general store. It also has two restaurants: the Burger Barn and KC Pepper Bar and Grill. The resort is located at 182 Ski Run Rd. Call 570/2296887 or visit www.lakewanoka.com.

The arts bloom in Wayn Wayne County is home to a vibrant arts community that includes the full range of visual artists, literary artists and musicians. Honesdale is home to a very active, well organized arts alliance, the Wayne County Arts Alliance (WCAA), with its members’ gallery and office in Maude Alley at 1023 Main Street (www.waynecountyartsalliance.org). There are, in addition, other privately owned galleries in Honesdale including The Willow River Gallery & Café (www.willowrivergallery.com) and The Hanson Gallery & Decorium (www.thehansongallery.com) and Missing Pieces at 959 Main Street, a gallery and source for handmade artisan gifts. Another happening on the arts scene is the building of a fiber arts movement due to a large part to The Gentle Arts (www. thegentlearts.com), offering classes and a selection of unique fibers (angora, cashmere, wool, alpaca, and fabulous blends of yarns). The highlight of the summer is the WCAA Artists’ Studio Tour (www. waynecountyartsalliance.org/artists-studio-tour.html) in which local artists throw open their studio doors to welcome the general public to view (and purchase) their works. Meet the featured artists at an opening reception on Saturday, July 5 from 4 to 7 p.m. Artists include painters, potters, photographers, sculptors, jewelers, printmakers, mixed media, batik and folk artists. Now in its 12th year, this is a free, selfguided, three-day event that in 2014 will feature 24 artists at 17 studio locations on Friday, July 11 through Sunday, July 13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Maps and brochures listing all locations and artists are available at tour headquarters, the WCAA office, July 6 through 10, 12 noon to 4 p.m.; July 11 through 13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., or can also can be found on the Arts Alliance’s website. For information, call 570/851-2550. Currently (through June 28) artworks by local high school students from Honesdale HS, Wallenpaupack Area HS, Western Wayne HS and Forest City Regional HS are featured at the WCAA Gallery in a Summer Arts
12
ne County Academy exhibition, supported in part by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. WCAA also supports a number of active arts committees including: The Poetry Committee of the WCAA, which is dedicated to the showcasing and development of craft for regional poets. Follow the WCAA blog for workshops and other scheduled events and open-mic readings. To have a poem published in the Wayne Independent’s column “Poetry Front and Center,” send a poem or two with contact info to: WCAA Poetry Committee, C/O Three Stones Press, P.O. Box 1036, Honesdale, PA, 18431. The Monday Night Movie program is a group of filmmakers and film aficionados who gather to screen foreign, independent and classic films and to discuss the film’s themes, artistic points and film craft afterwards. Currently on hiatus for the summer, Monday Night Movies, which convenes at Cinema 6, will resume screenings in the fall. In addition to WCAA’s poetry group, there is also an independent Writers’ Circle of Wayne County, which meets twice a month at the Honesdale library. Members gather to read and critique each other’s works in progress. The group also holds occasional readings that are open to the public. Many local and regional bands, individuals and smaller groups of musicians (duos, trios and quartets) perform regularly in Honesdale’s premier performance space at The Cooperage Project, 1020 Main St. (thecooperageproject.org). For music outdoors, bring a lawn chair or blanket to Honesdale’s Central Park on summer Monday and Thursday evenings as local and regional music rings out in the Summer Festival of Events series (wccac.wordpress.com), running through the end of July. A vibrant arts scene contributes mightily to a thriving local community. Honesdale happily acknowledges the treasure it has in the abundance of local artists and invites residents and visitors alike to discover the arts in Wayne County.
