There have been many, many ups and downs In the New Zealand dairy industry in the 60-odd years Tru-Test has been part of it. While no-one doubts what phase we’re in right at the moment, a lean period does bring at least one benefit. It encourages people on the land to look more closely at how they farm – in particular at how they make decisions. Our teams of on-farm specialists are busy at the moment working with people who are doing just that - reviewing and reassessing how they run their farms.

Verne Atmore General Manager New Zealand Tru-Test Group

At the moment their conversations aren’t about how to produce more. They’re about how to produce more effectively. At Tru-Test we’re immensely proud of the role we play in helping dairy farmers invest wisely in areas that allow them to produce more effectively. This is based on achieving greater control and profitability through better information. We’re helping farmers make decisions that are saving them money and freeing up their time. Money and time – are there two more important ingredients in business? We hope you will take some time to look closely at our dairy solutions catalogue. It outlines the various ways Tru-Test can help you save - and make - more of that other important thing. Money.

Young dairy stock health & performance

Young dairy stock health & performance

Improve breeding outcomes and milk production Achieving the 15-month live-weight growth target recommended by DairyNZ will mean young stock are more likely to cycle and get in calf at first mating. They are less likely to be late-calvers and so produce more milk. DairyNZ figures indicate a cow can have 20% more milk production as a first calver if grown out properly. Talk to us about our range of accurate, fast, and rugged weighing and EID products. These products will help you gather the individual animal information you need to monitor sickness, minimise treatment waste, manage animal growth and condition for breeding success.

Young dairy stock health & performance

“Raising good young stock is going to be what grows our big producing dairy animals. At the end of the day that’s what we actually want to be producing.”

Young dairy stock health & performance

TESTIMONIAL

Building tomorrow’s herd Jen Saunders, Operations Manager for five large dairy farms and five run offs, says from a business point of view, they weren’t producing the animals they wanted. “Everything was done by eye so you couldn’t say they were gaining a kilo a day. If you don’t have the results [when] raising your young stock, you have to question why you are doing it. What are you doing right and what are you doing wrong?” “Tru-Test’s static weigh system has changed our business. Outside the dairy shed, with our younger stock is where it all begins. Raising good young stock is going to be what grows our big producing dairy animals. At the end of the day that’s what we actually want to be producing.” “We use the ID5000, have the load bars under our platform and an EID reader, the Kiwiana XRS wand.” “It was a very dramatic change for us. We manage our animals so much better. We knew we now had a light mob and a heavy mob. We can now take care of the animals needing extra

feed and extra attention while still benefiting the bigger mob which are still gaining. It is probably my favourite of all the tools we have on farm.” “We want to make sure we have animals at target weight at mating, so that on calving they are sitting at that right body condition score, we want to make sure we have big sturdy animals with big nice full rumens.” “When weighing animals and following targets you set for yourselves and for your animals you are going to get the highest return. You are able to save so much more by breeding good stock and taking care of good young stock. You know how to manage your feed, how your managers are going to handle the young stock as young heifers. You know when you send your heifers out for mating that they are going to be at a good mating weight. You are not going to be putting the bulls out

with something that shouldn’t be having calves. You are going to have fewer animal health issues, healthier animals, fewer deaths.” “At different times of the year the weigh system can tell you what’s happening with the grass, feed and weather, animal health issues, it will show leaps and bounds and gains, and you can see management. It is not just a number on a screen.”

Herd Management and Performance

Herd Management and Performance

Manage your most important asset – your herd In-shed automation gives you the information you need to make well-informed decisions about how best to manage your herd and increase productivity. Tracking individual, herd, and shed activity enables you to monitor animal condition and health, and successfully manage tasks such as preferential feeding, setting up groups for feeding or drafting and producing a better 6-week in-calf rate. Automation also makes it easier for you to manage multiple sheds from a single location. Tru-Test’s in-shed automation is designed to be installed as a complete system or in modules. Depending on your budget and specific needs, you can choose to install all at once, or build your automation capabilities as you go. Our in-shed automation works with MiHub™ for Dairy Herd Management. It connects with the national dairy database through CRV* and can integrate files from MINDA* and INSIGHT*.

“The online aspect is quite powerful. You open up the dashboard in MiHub and you know how many cows were milked, start, finish, wash time and temperature, you know when staff finished work. It is very structured.

Herd Management and Performance

TESTIMONIAL

Managing performance, driving production “As a farmer I am quite passionate about my costs and doing good production. You’ve got to be productive per hectare and make sure costs are under control. That has really driven me over the last five years.” “We put in a Tru-Test Dairy Automation system straight away. The logic was – I could afford not to herd test. And by not herd testing it would pay for the interest on my drafting gate. I knew I wouldn’t be culling cows in the first five years on protein or fat because you don’t have the numbers”.

“Milking efficiencies are the biggest thing. Everyone knows how everyone else is performing during milking. The time is right up in front of you. It keeps the guys focussed. If I ever see a grade come up I can go back and see any shortcuts, if the plant didn’t get to temperature. It’s having those checks in place.”

Putting in Tru-Test’s Dairy Automation gave Ross individual cow yield data and information on mastitis rankings for each cow using a combination of conductivity and other measures. For Ross, this was enough to make “good calls” and then he got a drafting gate on top.

“If the somatic cells get high I’ll whip through the top 20 conductivity (ranked) cows, draft them in the morning, biff them in the reds and that night the boys strip them. You might find a couple of mastitis cows and the cell count sorts itself out. It is so easy. I don’t have to do that too often because we have good staff. When the guys are milking they are always looking at the screen. If they see a 1.7 or a 1.8 they will strip that cow before they put the cups on.”

“For me, it is an easy management tool. The online aspect is quite powerful. You open up the dashboard in MiHub and you know how many cows were milked, start, finish, wash time and temperature, you know when staff finished work. It is very structured.”

- Ross Minson

Milk cooling, quality and tanks

Milk cooling, quality and tanks

Protect your valuable milk Avoid the potentially costly consequences of milk temperatures being too high. Reliable milkcooling systems give you confidence that your milk will be collected and paid for. Whether you’re dealing with tougher milkcooling regulations, increasing milk volumes, power constraints, or water restrictions, our experienced team of on-farm, milk-cooling experts will only recommend products and services you actually need. As standard, we offer Milk Cooling Assessments to compare your plant performance with current and future NZCP1 standards. Milk cooling, quality and tanks

“I set out to have the cooling system that would give me the best outcome for the dollars spent. That’s what I got!”

Milk cooling, quality and tanks

TESTIMONIAL

Looking beyond compliance Too small for increasing herd growth and with small refrigeration units struggling to manage cooling, Stephen and Annette Silcock’s 33-year old rotary cowshed was destined for retirement. In planning their new dairy shed, Stephen and Annette prepared a smooth transition to their own retirement by creating an efficient convenient operation which is pleasant to work in. That includes installing a system to get milk down to temperature quickly, cost-effectively and reliably so there is no panic even when the unexpected happens. And it sometimes does. So Stephen and Annette’s measure of success for refrigeration is based on how much the cooling exceeds the NZCP1 milk cooling standards with margin to spare. “I set out to have the cooling system that would give me the best outcome for the dollars spent. That’s what I got! Our milk is at minimum temperature

at the end of each milking. We will have no issues about being compliant.” Conversations began with Tru-Test as Stephen considered the pros and cons and pricing options of snap chilling “Our thinking was aligned with TruTest from the start. Precooling was essential for compliance.” There are a number of precooling options in the market using water, ice or glycol or a mix of these. The right precooling solution for any dairy set up will vary depending on local conditions, herd size, water access, set up and farm goals. Stephen went with a chilled water system from Tru-Test which is enough to pull his milk down below the regulation and gives him the benefit of low ongoing costs and certainty.

“We had plenty of discussion and looked at many options using water and glycol. The glycol options which we considered ran precooling and vat refrigeration off one system. When you have a breakdown you are in trouble. Vat refrigeration and precooling using water means there are two different systems. Water has an inbuilt back up. This way, if one of the systems goes off for a couple of hours, we can still remain compliant and get the milk into the tanker.” Stephen also put in heat recovery to recycle the warm water created through milk cooling during milking to reduce his ongoing hot water energy costs. It’s a system that’s well-prepared, reliable and efficient.

TESTIMONIAL

Working from strong foundations It was a busy time on the family farm in Korakonui, with the herd size now climbing to 1200 and winter milkers. Merging animal records was going to be an exacting task. “We purchased a neighbouring property, increased the herd size by purchasing two new herds, and built the new shed,” explains Rosalie Campbell. Retagging the new herds and getting all the data right before the newcomers were introduced to the rest of the herd had been the goal. But that hadn’t gone to plan. In fact, it became a “complete mess”. At the same time, the Campbell’s installed Tru-Test’s dairy automation modular system in their new shed, with Inline sensors, Walk Over Weighing, Autodrafting and Feed Control together with its MiHub™ Dairy Herd Management Software. The MiHub system collects data from every cow at every milking to build up a thorough history of each cow. The big herd numbers meant some form of animal tracking was an absolute necessity. Rose stepped in. Having moved from managing wholesale logistics to managing the farm bookwork, computer work and recording, she set about learning the MiHub Dairy

Herd Management Software and fixing the EID & VID records in a systematic fashion. “My brother and I together were working through the computer side, starting off with the ‘no tag’ draft. We tried to get all the EIDs up to date, but the job was just too big. Our Tru-Test rep helped us out with the cows and we were able to update the VIDs straight into the computer. Until we did that we didn’t realise what a massive amount of duplicates we had. It felt like a never-ending battle. “That, with everything else we had to get done on the farm, like trying to keep track of mastitis on the computer side, recording calvings, it was just a bit much.” A timely call from Jon at the Agtrac technical support team put change into motion. “When Jon told me about the Tag Audit we were pretty excited. I thought ‘Oh that’s fantastic!’ Two of the team came down. It was a big job and the bulk of it was done in a day.” All EID & VID records are matching and herd records perfect, other than

a mob of cows that stayed back on another farm. “Once that is done we can sync with CRV Ambreed. We are really excited. That will save me entering everything in twice. That will be cool.” Now data integrity is under control, Rose is putting MiHub under its paces. “I have been RMT testing myself. At this time of year the cows are stressed. We can see the cell count climbing on the docket so I pulled out the top 30 mastitis ratio cows (the sensors use a salt count rather than cell count). We picked up a lot, so the system seems to pretty accurate pulling up for subclinical cows.” With confidence in herd records and accuracy of MiHub, Rose’s next step is to keep track of empties and lates on MiHub, lessening workload in the shed and cutting out the extra manual tagging. Sorting cows will be easier too with automatic three-way drafting direct from her office. Duplicates sorted and in the second season with MiHub, the system is building some really good individual cow history. “Soon we will be looking at mastitis, yield and calving history and using the data for culling”. “It is only really the beginning. There’s so much more to know. So much more we can do.”
