The New Aluminum F150 has Finally Arrived! We have endeavored to create a safe and easy mudflap for you to install while maintaining the same great quality you have come to know from our Gatorback line. In the next few pages, we have included the bulletin sent out by the Ford Motor Company regarding the installation of aftermarket accessories. As most of you are aware, this aluminum truck changes the way we all do business! Please review the information and products carefully. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact your representative or our head office. We will be offering some exciting new die stamp designs as well as your Ford Gatorback favorites with aluminum hardware. You will be able to differentiate them from their “Stainless” counterparts by their new blue labels on the boxes, as well as the aluminum hardware itself, will be housed in blue plastic bags. While we have tried to keep everything separate for you, in the end, it is ultimately your responsibility to ensure that you are using the right hardware with the right truck. Remember little tricks like aluminum being a lighter and a more dull silver color and that aluminum is lighter in weight than stainless steel. Most importantly, be aware that steel and aluminum DO NOT mix! Please see below where we have found an example of an aluminum bumper having a reaction with a steel bracket. The aluminum began to disintegrate due to galvanic corrosion caused by the two metals being in contact with one another. So keep your stainless steel stock for your Super Duty’s separate from your aluminum stock for your new F150’s! Example of The Galvanic Corrosion:

Attaching Accessories to Aluminum Panels and Structure Models Affected:

2015 MY and later F-150

Background: The high-strength aluminum alloy in the all-new F-150 does not produce red rust like steel. We have gone to great lengths to develop coatings to inhibit corrosion. However, customers should take note that when installing aftermarket equipment, aluminum can still corrode if the aluminum is attached to dissimilar metals. This type of corrosion is called “galvanic corrosion” and it occurs where there is contact between different metals, like steel or stainless steel fasteners. Protecting against galvanic corrosion When installing aftermarket equipment, it is necessary that the installer pay special attention when drilling or clamping dissimilar metals to the aluminum body. • • • • •

Anytime the factory paint is damaged, it is recommended that the paint be repaired with a suitable coating prior to installing aftermarket equipment (i.e. splash guards, bug shields, tool boxes, etc.) When installing fasteners into the mounting hole the fastener should not have contact or have an interference fit with the sheet metal For zinc coated steel bolts and screws, an aluminum washer should be used For further protection, an isolation layer should be used between the two dissimilar metals When clamping onto the truck, a polypropylene or urethane tape can be used as the isolating layer

Examples In this section we illustrate some best practices to isolate steel from coming in contact with aluminum. Using the previously listed fasteners and coatings in addition to good isolation techniques will help ensure durability, strength and quality of your F150. Note: The following illustrations are not vehicle specific and are intended for reference only. Figure 1 shows a plastic accessory attached to the aluminum sheet metal and the fastener properly isolated from contact with the aluminum sheet metal. Figure 2 shows a steel accessory and steel fastener properly isolated from contact with the aluminum sheet metal. Note: both figures show the fastener using an aluminum washer and having an oversize hole providing an air gap to the aluminum sheet metal.



Choose your front and rear “No Drill” Bracket based on whether your

truck has OEM flares or not. Choose which universal Gatorback rubber flap you would like to use. Each bracket and set of flaps come with all of the aluminum hardware you need for install. Also included is a paper template to assist you in drilling the appropriate holes in the rubber flaps for install.

Choose your front and rear “No Drill” Bracket based on whether your

truck has OEM flares or not. Choose which “Custom” Gatorback mudflap design you would like to use. Each bracket and set of flaps come with all of the aluminum hardware and instructions you will need for install. • The “No Drill” Brackets can be used with both our universal rubber and our custom Gatorback mud flaps.

Use the Economy Bracket to create a straight and secure mounting point.

You will need to drill in to the fender to secure the mudflap further. Please review the Ford bulletin.

REAR BRACKETS - Body Drill The Economy aluminum bracket is a perfect option for those wanting an inexpensive yet proper way to hang their Gatorback mud flaps. This method creates a strong support while making sure the mud flap remains square. You will still need to drill into the fender lip to secure the remaining portion of the mud flap.

Gatorback Mud Flaps have a limited lifetime warranty. This warranty covers the rubber (e.g. tear offs) for the lifetime of the product to the original owner. It does not cover regular wear and tear on brackets, plates or mounting hardware.
